How old was he here? Couldn’t be older than maybe 19 or 20. WHAT an incredible band, and the video and audio quality is amazing for something from 1972! This kind of stuff is why I spend so much time in the TH-cam rabbit hole!😂🤣😂
What is scary, is that this is almost 50 years ago. And yet if we were to listen to exactly the same music we would not be saying we were listening to "old" style jazz. Yet if people back then were listening to jazz from 50 years before, they would say it was old.
@@silva777 I love Chick's Rhodes playing. It isn't really a piano, it's more like a celeste except better. Celestes sound clunky and never caught on. If it weren't for the Nutcracker they would have died out. The Rhodes has been back in production since 2007.
Well in 1950 the innovations of Charlie Parker were still new. But in 1920 Jazz itself was still new! The real truth is that jazz evolved so fast that the musicians themselves couldn't keep up. However some basic tonal and rhythmic parameters of sophistication reach kinda the popular ambiguity limit so going any further taxes the regular lay audience. So what's interesting is all the different mariad ways these limits of ambiguity/sophistication are expressed in jazz. From Jarrett or Kenny Wheeler or David Holland to Phronesis or Chris Dave etc etc etc
All four of this musicians are Jazz Gods. Tony Williams, who Miles had play with him when he was 17 years old. Chick Corea, arguably the best Electric Pianist of all time, Stanley Clarke ( I won't even start with Stanley) and Stan Getz,
Getz "Live at the Cafe Au Go Go" with Gary Burton --freshout of Juliard & Austraud Gilberto debuting in the US, was my introduction to Brazilian Jazz. Get z will always comfort my soul with his incomperable sound.
The quartet had Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes, but after some bad live performance Getz blamed it on Haynes saying his timing was off and kicked him out of the band. According to Swallow that was bullsh*t and anyone that knows Roy Haynes knows his time is impeccable. It was Getz who was having drug problems and messed up the performance. Swallow wouldn't stand for it and basically quit in defense of Roy. Chick was sort of stuck since the European tour was booked and it showcased his music and as I recall he was the arranger for the quartet. Swallow talks about this in an interview that's on YT. But Stanley and Tony sound great! They all do. It's a super-group!
Mr. Corea's best. This is a real treat. All top musicians come together for this great live show; I really enjoy a lot of the 1970's jazz shows by various artists for some reason.
Excelent video ..getz one of the greatest sax players on american jazz scene..armando "chick" corea looks like a high school kid...for me the most versatile piano player on jazz...tony williams awesome...stanley clarke a wizard on bass...
Well, Herbie Hancock is actually the most versatile pianist in jazz and I think his discography has proven that 10 fold; I could never "dance" to Chick's music, however great it was. Both are great musicians, though.
Just "rediscovered" Stan Getz and been searching for live performances on TH-cam...wow, what a great performance by him, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Tony Williams. I had a Rhodes Suitcase 73 like that...it has a great classic Rhodes sound. And Stan Getz - love his playing and style!
But it works great and Stan keeps up sounding more modern but keeping his signature sound. It's ok to mix people from different "eras" I like to see how they adjust.

This set of walnut finish Gretsch drums was Tony's normal set-up for a long time. Called the "Progressive Jazz" kit in the Gretsch catalog. Tony only needed 4 drums. After the demise of his Lifetime group, he went for a bigger sound and got the Yellow Nitron Gretsch kit, w/ 24" bass drum, 3 floor toms and twin rack toms. Rock sizes to be sure.
Disagree. One of the features of TW's drumming was that he did not feel the need to set down a backbeat, which particularly with a 3/4 time piece such as this is an advantage as the soloists can improvise within the time signature and TW can respond accordingly. Brilliant drumming in my view.
Are you kiddin me? Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Tony Williams with Stan Getz? Get outta here. Titans.
This is exactly what I felt when I saw the video
I’ve heard better lol
That's A LOT of greats on that stage and BOY did Chick & Stanley do the damn thing!!! Just Beautiful!❤
Stanley's solo was incredible on this one.

Hopefully, today a real piano would be used instead of an electric piano. Do they even make these toys anymore?

Stan Getz with 1/2 Return to Forever and 1/4 Lifetime
Lifetime was at its best as a trio. And I'd say more like 90% Lifetime.
