- June 13, 2016 by SURAYA MOHAMED • Sometimes big-name artists need special attention. But in this case, it wasn't because they've been jazz pioneers and innovators since the 1960s and are considered to be founding fathers of jazz fusion, not to mention two of the most important jazz figures performing today. It's not because they've collectively recorded more than 100 albums and won 29 Grammy Awards. The agitation was because both of their instruments couldn't fit behind Bob Boilen's Tiny Desk.
There were logistical hurdles to overcome before the jazz giants' arrival. We had to move the desk to make a bigger "stage." Piano movers hauled the 900-pound Yamaha C7 grand piano from our first-floor performance studio up the freight elevator to the fourth-floor Tiny Desk area. But weeks of meticulous measuring and planning paid off when the rented vibes were delivered and just fit alongside the piano.
Gary Burton and Chick Corea were in town for the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters Concert. The NEA Jazz Masters fellowship is the highest honor our nation bestows on jazz artists. Each year, the program honors a select few living legends who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of jazz. Burton was a newly appointed 2016 recipient, while Corea received the honor in 2006.
These friends first played together 44 years ago, when they recorded their very first album, Crystal Silence. In his autobiography, Gary Burton tells the story:
We set aside three days for the recording. Except for ... one tune in Munich, Chick and I hadn't worked together before Berlin, so we figured we would need a fair amount of time to choose songs and finalize arrangements. But to our amazement, it all went incredibly fast. We would spend maybe twenty minutes creating an arrangement, and then record. We did every song in just one take, except that we required a second spin through "Senor Mouse."
The record was finished in just a few hours, and the two realized they had a unique musical chemistry with the ability to anticipate each other's improvisational ideas. That album went on to become a classic: flawless yet fresh and forever new.
A few thousand concerts later, the jazz masters showed up at NPR HQ to perform a concert at our newly expanded Tiny Desk. On this day, it had been almost two years since Chick Corea and Gary Burton had played together - the longest break they'd ever had. But once again, their remarkable ability to connect was demonstrated in two songs they play together all the time.

Maynard Ferguson, Keith Emerson, McCoy Tyner, and Chick Corea have made me realize I need to see the legends live when I can and NOT wait for it. These loses are the greatest for me. All my musical influences from elementary and middle school jazz band are going.

What we don't realize is that fifty years down the road, people are going to be listening to these last performances much in the way we listen to Miles or Parker's from 50+ years back. NPR has greatly contributed to the preservation of this man's work by having him perform here. The best part is that the audio is just simply superb.
Plenty of people realize this. Taking the God perspective is an easy way to get upvotes but in the end it's arrogant.
Why last performances? Music lovers like to listen to an artist's BEST performances regardless of where in their career they're from. 50 years from now, if we still have a viable civilization, yes, i too believe these artists will still be admired. However, it's anybody's guess what situation will prevail in 200 years or more when it comes to people's tastes. I remember listening to an interview on NPR with a guy who has studied this phenomenon of celebrities and artists everybody knew about in their time, who had sunk in a temporary anonymity after their demise or have forever remained unknown. After all, Shakespeare's greatness was newly discovered about a hundred years after his death. When he died in 1750, J.S. Bach and most of his music were all but forgotten. It was only in 1829 that Mendelssohn reintroduced Bach's genius to the world.

Raised with a touch of jazz (Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey) ... discovered FUSION because of John McLaughlin and that brought me shortly thereafter to Chick Corea (Return To Forever). Now own MUCH of Chick Corea catalog including his very first solo recording from more than 50 years ago. Can't believe he's gone. He was so vibrant and active up until very recently. His skills never abated right up to almost his 80th.

He's so humble to say that, because we always are worried about the level of our music to be on the highest standard, so we struggle a lot trying to do that, but he was not worried about that, he simply did. Perhaps the more you try, the worst it becomes, so if you take it easy and relax, letting the music flow, this would be the best way. 🎉🎉❤❤❤

Back in the early 70s, a new club opened up down the street from my apartment in East Lansing. My friend and I decided to check it out. We came in and there was almost no one in the place yet, so we took a table right in front of the where the band's instruments were set up. More people came in and took their tables. Four musicians came out; a bass player, a drummer/percussionist, a guitarist, and a piano player. We didn't know who these people were and had never heard of 'fusion jazz' before. They were Chick Corea and Return to Forever (without Flora Purim). It was one of the most magical musical experiences of my life. We were completely blown away. I've been a fan ever since.
And last time I saw Chick play was in Ann Arbor
@@DawsonMusicEducation I saw Chick and Gary Burton at U of M, shortly after I moved to Michigan in 1976. Saw him previously several times in NYC with Return to Forever, and in Ann Arbor he and Burton did 45 of solo piano, 45 minutes of solo vibraphone, and then came back after intermission and played the entire Crystal Silence album! Magnificent! Chick will be missed, but most definitely not forgotten!

Kevin- I was there !!! Bar called the Stables if I recall - we were so blown away we came a couple nights in a row - got to experience some greats at the Stables and other spots in East Lansing during that time - but “ Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy” was fresh , new and VERY ELECTRIC- Chick, Stanley; Lenny White and Bill Connors - very relatable in that bar - perhaps 100-150 people there - motivated me to learn about Miles and his “tree” - all the bands that came from Miles - Weather Report, Mahavishnu, Return to Forever, Herbie’s Sextet and Headhunters.
As much as I revered Zawinul and his world music, Chick seemed very approachable- like he could just be your buddy. Firstly, thanks to NPR for sharing all these small desk visits. Chick and Gary Burton , two contemporaries seemed to get to the very essence of Chick’s brilliance and his Spanish roots- Return to Forevers first ECM album including “crystal silence” heard here was a fundamental disc in forming my love, appreciation and fervor for Chick and his music - I am still stunned that he is gone , a year later - not sad - just deprived of what he could share with us going forward. Thanks for posting this session.

maybe because its not marketable to base appetites and more accessible aesthetics like generalizable physical beauty are. We are not informed by tradition of soul in America. We are a nation of laws and financial success and then its all a void for businesses to step in and influence you if you are without your soul. Or rather in America we are free also in the sense that you as an individual have to discover culture for yourself, its not going to be on TV and the front pages of social media but if thats where youre expecting to find it you havent even begun to discover your soul so what difference does it make

In America, at least, most people follow the ways of the American Dream, which says that the US gives people certain freedoms which allow citizens to work hard to rise up in the ranks. Retired people in some of Americans' eyes are not worthy of respect because they aren't trying to work super hard. Ironically, they are the ones that have achieved financial stability, one of the aspirations of americans.
Burton's vibes must be made of gold. No one sounds like him. And as for varying the distance between the mallets as he's playing..... that's plain spooky. CC is always an inspiration to the soul. Together, they make the World a better place. Sad that CC died but he will never be forgotten. He's a reference point for pianists. Always will be. Both legends. One offs. Aren't the rest of us lucky to be here to see them...

but beside that i agree Garry Burton is one uniquely skilled individual, and by far the best jazz/fusion vibraphonist to this day

My pops took my brother and i, and our best friend dylan to one of their shows at some fancy concert hall in SoCal back in 2010 i think it was. We all ate a great deal of mushrooms on the way in. Although pops didnt partake, it was his idea. We had seats behind the stage. So everyone had a great view of us, and had no idea what they were in for nor did we. About 2 songs in, the fungus had started to take its affect. And we all at once realized why pops insisted we share this trip. Not only because it was a profound personal experience he had when he was our age, but that he got to watch us as we had the same epiphanies and gargantuan emotional rollercoaster of a trip he shared with his brothers. It was perfect, we cried, we danced and partied like we were at a dead show. We discusted most of the crowd, until after the last song, Chick turned around and pointed and gave us a very deliberate and obvious gesture of gratitude towards our attitude throughout their performance. I looked at pops for a sober party comfermatiom of what we had just witnessed, and he was crying. And Chick gave pops the same gesture of gratitude. It was the perfect trip and the perfect night, all to the tune of the perfect performance.
A week later i took my dad to his first Phish show....
Thanks for the awesome story. Experiences like that honor the legacy of musicians like Chick. May he rest in peace.

This has been a heartbreaking time span in every way, but for me, the passing of Chick, after the devastating news a few months ago, about Keith and his two strokes which have left him paralyzed on his left side, was just heartbreaking! These two giants of piano have been my inspiration-following Bill Evans’s initial impact on me (Bill made me a pianist because of two pieces-“Blue In Green” and “Flamenco Sketches”. These musical masterpieces turned me from vibes to piano) I spent 3 hours one-on-one with Bill-the most important time in music for me-but I also talked with Chick the two times I saw him live. Chick was such a marvelous, charming human being as well as a Master artist. It was an honor to have seen and talked to him! RIP, Chick! You will be sorely missed!😞
How about a mention of the great Milford Graves who also died just a few days after Chick. Equally innovative and important. 2021 has already been a hard year.

Countless important people die every year - we can't know about all of them, and we can't hold them all in equal regard. We know what we know and we don't choose who made the biggest impact.
The world is a darker place without Chick Corea, one of--if not the--greatest jazz pianist/composers who ever lived.

holy cow. almost nobody else that plays with Chick can really hang on his level of quickness and invention, not to mention rhythmic sophistication and crispness of time. Gary can, and it is a pleasure to hear. These guys are in their '70s if I'm not mistaken. incredible. timeless mastery.

both have perfect pitch and most importantly lived every note they played! Both were around when Jazz was real Jazz and before transcribe 7, cellphones ,internet! Today's schooled Clones have helped destroy the essence of Jazz by copying while missing the vital Blues/swing from their own perspectives mainly to make money and look cute while feigning intelligence!
And yet Gary Burton retired because he didn't feel as fresh anymore. What does that mean for the rest of us! Lol

The vibraphone and piano complement each other so well. Then add in the fact that Chick and Mr. Burton complemented each other so well. It’s just perfection.

The real magic is how they play two instruments in the same range and with similar timbre and somehow never play over each other or step on each other's toes. It's really, really hard to do.
the piano and the vibraphone do not have the same timbre, and although the range of the vibraphone is a subset of the range of the piano they largely avoid being in the same range.

It is! Though, they probably took roles too. Some will play the 1, 5 some the 3, 7, 9 etc.

How is this comment so high? The vibraphone and piano do not have similar timbre, do not have similar range, and playing instruments together that do have the same range and timbre in a way that is harmonious and complementary while not "stepping on each other toes" is not really, really hard to do. Musicians encounter many obstacles and this is not a particularly difficult one.
They seem like they're in their 20s while they're playing, really astounding.
These gentlemen had some special chemistry going on - one of Chick's best partnerships!

Good mics are important, but not everything. A laptop-made mix/recording from a good engineer will outperform a mix from a mediocre engineer with the latest n' greatest equipment!
I'm no sound engineer but if I had a Neumann mic vs a good sound engineer using a laptop mic, I'm sure as shit my recording would be better.

@@raphtx Not probably the inventor, literally the inventor - the way he holds the mallets is known as the Burton grip, and it's now very widely used by vibes players
As a pianist who can play a vibe decently, it’s all about knowing what keys you want to play as well as getting comfortable with your grip. It’s easy to play fast with two mallets, but hiking four is harder since there’s more to think about, both in regards to actual sticking and how to hold them in your hands.

I just wrote this as part of one of my college application essays. Funny how I was listening to this very music when writing it.
"As a musician, there’s perhaps no greater skill to develop than listening. When every member is an active part of the performance, listening and melding together into one sound-producing entity, the experience is 1000 times better. This skill translates well to conversation, and, frankly, working with people in any setting."
Anyway, I've always had trouble with becoming paralyzed and accomplishing anything, so right now I'm not trying to edit until I've finished writing. You seem like a cool person. I hope you do well in life.
What can I say about these two, 'MAGNIFICENT ARTISTS'. Growing up in the projects of the South Bronx, I had Chick and Gary recordings playing under my bed covers because my mom and dad were devout Southern Baptists and stated that there was to be no jazz or r&b to be played on Sundays!! When I was teaching in Yonkers, My fourth grade students would often listen to Chick and Gary, Miles, Coltrane, Nancy Wilson, Luther and Shirley Horn at 8:30 in the morning as they arrived to school. I would love to see Chick and Gary in New York soon. Two magnificent gifts to the world!!
What a loss. His music is in a class to it's own;. his creativity, connectivity, musical spirit and putting together musicians, skills, and promoting on going evolution through sounds is amazing to behold. So many thanks yous.

Irrespective of whether the music itself is your cup of tea, the sheer virtuosity and Chic and Gary's utter oneness with respective instruments is surely a joy to behold. I had the pleasure of seeing Chick Corea and Gary Burton 3 times when they came to Seattle's Opera house back in the 80's & 90's. Each time was something special. I will never forget it. Rest in peace Mr. Corea.

What do mean by dissonant, just because it’s dissonant doesn’t mean it’s not advanced, like monk, John Coltrane, etc, all use dissonance.

@@raidone7413 well unfortunately jazz musicians are (sometimes) attracted to types of music based on what boxes are being checked, rather than just feeling it. some people do genuinely enjoy giant steps and that's ok. I really dislike the fact that it's a rite of passage for jazz musicians though because it gives them a warped impression of what jazz is supposed to be.

Steve Gadd was being interviewed by Rick Beato and spoke spoke about playing with Chick in New York in the early days. They all played together and were encouraged and influenced by all of their diversity. I’ve played many years and have gotten much satisfaction (most of the time). But Only a very few of musicians deep as deep as Chick Corea, Max Roach, Alvin Jones, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Steve Gadd. Music Was their life’s. And even though I’ve never or will never achieve anything close to the collective genius, I can enjoy the music they devoted their lives to create. It inspires me at work to focus and think.
This is the video that absolutely made me fall in love with Chick’s music! He has been one of my favorite artists since then.

Crystal Silence was the first Chick Corea album I ever bought back in 1977. Hard to believe it was the first tune he ever did with Gary Burton. I’ve listened hundreds of times and it still enthralls me. Hard to think of two absolute masters who belonged together more. Makes my heart ache to think Chick is gone.
Wow. Just beautiful. Still can't believe that Chick's gone. He certainly lived a full life and left us some of the greatest music ever.

I'm always amazed when two players of orchestral instruments can play with such grace and interest, and not step on each other's toes. Gary Burton invented the technique he, and now virtually any vibraphonist, uses. Thanks for this.
How impeccably in tune with each other these two are! It's mesmerizing, honestly. So thankful to have had endlessly resourceful musicians like Chick (and Burton) around in my own lifetime.
R.I.P. one of the greatest of all time. I really felt the loss when i heard the news. A vibrant man and musician.
I am not even a jazz fan, but this is my second time watching this. I love music. It is obvious that I am watching masters of their craft.

In my mind, it's being able to renew a timeless piece like Crystal Silence each and every time you play it that really makes Jazz, Jazz. That constant renewal is the greatness of this duo and their individuality within music. So glad to be able to watch the masters in action again. Thank you for this recording.

My main regret is not seeing a Chick Corea live performance. I discovered him in the early 90s as a teenager. Didn't get serious about listening till 2009 . Man , I missed out .

I love this so much. Chick looks like it's as easy as if he were sitting down to have a cup of coffee. Effortless. And what a beautiful composition.
The magnitude of their musical talent is mind blowing and gives me a kind of vertigo. Hard to describe, just amazing stuff.
I saw Chick Corea play in Leeds in 1971 or 1972 - and still vividly remember the impact of his amazing performance. A truly great musician.
In 1974 I got to see The Paul Winter Consort open for Chick Corea and Return to Forever. Opened up a world I have happily lived in since.

My job, finances, health and depression caused me pain and sleepless nights.
Then I found Jazz.
.....And it all went away!
Damn, I wish I could sit inside one of their heads as they do this. Short of having heard them perform these pieces hundreds of times there's no other way I could tell just how they are interacting in the moment.
Improvised music doesn't mean that every note is unique to that performance, much of what they play is predicated on how they've done it before. But there are always moments when one performer tries something new and the other(s) come along for the ride. I love it when you see a performer's head go up in surprise, the perpetrator's answering grin, and suddenly the music spirals up and away powered by surprise and joy.
Sadly, these guys are so good, and so experienced that my ignorant self can't spot those moments here. Ah well, good thing that the music all by itself is so beautiful.
I actually heard a radio interview with Chick recently and he was asked "What goes on in your head when you are performing?" And he immediately said "Absolutely nothing." His mind is empty, his attention is focused out there with the other performers, with the audience, and his fingers just go - and that's how the magic is created.
Chick really thrives in a duet. He has a long term relationship with Gary Burton and recent years he has collaborated with Bela Fleck. Top notch super high level music pure excellence !
RIP Chick. I started listening to Chick in the mid 70's when I was 10 years old. Many albums, cassettes and Cd's later... Yes, I've been a Chick Corea fan for a long time. You have touched many and allowed many peaceful/joyous moments as a result of your brilliance. Thanks for your untouchable contributions especially in the form of jazz instrumentals. You will be sorely missed!

I actually felt the glorious opposite, I felt like I'd spent an hour of gluttonous musical enjoyment and was a bit anxious about how I should really get back to work after having lost so much time. Discovering I was only 5 minutes in was a God send as I needn't feel guilty listening to the whole performance :)
