  • Blue Apron is a $2 billion company that's supposed to make cooking easier. For me, though, cooking with Blue Apron was one of the most stressful experiences of my life.
    Produced by Will Wei. Special thanks to Megan Willett.

    So the truth about Blue Apron is that there's nothing wrong with it and this video is useless clickbait?

    • @billyjoethethird8436
      @billyjoethethird8436 6 ปีที่แล้ว +108

      No, it's that if someone doesn't know how to cook then it would take longer than how long they said it would take to finish cooking the food.

      And the guy has no knife skills.. Or common sense hence why it took him an hour .. Ide put my quinoa to cook while I do all my knife work and finish the salmon off in the ends since it only takes like 6 minutes .. To cook on a piping hot pan.

      Jose Rodriguez sounds like you're missing the common sense. If you watch the video, he does it by the directions. It isn't "common sense" to know how to prepare a meal in the kitchen.

      Yeah I'm mad
      I wanted some juicy secrets!
      But really it's just people obviously not reading what they signed up for.. I don't live in America but one look at the company explains that they send you food to cook...
      so I don't see the difference..
      what are they complaining about exactly? That he cant cook? Was he not expecting to have to cook? Or do they just not understand that the time saving part is how he didn't have to go shopping for those ingredients..?

BlueApron is marketed as something to supplement poor cooking knowledge, so if someone who is mediocre at cooking can't make the food properly, how can they claim what they're selling is quality?

      Blue Aprons whole schtick is that it’s for people who can’t make this on their own. Anyone who knows how to cook does not need to buy a damn food subscription box. If their instructions suck, and it takes forever to make, that’s Blue Aprons problem.

      "If their instructions suck, and it takes forever to make"
      i hope you realize the only realistic solution to this is to mail people a box of cereal and a carton of milk, or just send them a stack of lunchables. the instructions were perfectly fine, and this stuff takes time no matter how good you are. these are legit home cooked meals, not instant shit from a box

  • @nanoflower1

      xXt0x1c-sl1m3Xx Work smart, not hard. Cut the long way first, then the short way. Use a nice rocking motion with the pressure on the heel of your knife, not the tip. Use a large cutting board so you have space to work, not that dinky thing in the video. There are online videos on knife technique. And practice helps.

    • @iaminsane8
      @iaminsane8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      ArchangelExile I believe he said the recipe is salmon and "preserved lemons". Preserved lemons normally take a month to make and you would throw away the flesh and use the rind only. What they call preserved lemon is not preserved lemon and will probably be extremely bitter.

    • @namenotavailable_1275
      @namenotavailable_1275 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      venomjuker When you zest the lemons, you're supposed to stop at the white part, but he threw the whole thing on

    • @ArchangelExile
      @ArchangelExile 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, that's what threw me for a loop. Usually, when people use lemon zest, they just use the surface, not the entire peel, lol.

    • @AllSeriousSubjects
      @AllSeriousSubjects 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ArchangelExile yes, the same goes for oranges. An orange's rind is extremely high in vitamin D and essential for healthy gums.

    • @BooRadleyTube
      @BooRadleyTube 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As others have said, lemon zest is the yellow outer part of the lemon, not the whole of the skin. Most recipes calling for lemon zest require you to finely grate the yellow part off, leaving the pith (the white rind) behind.
      The only time you do eat the whole of the skin is with preserved lemons. In that case the salt and water combined with the lemon juice ferments the fruit and softens the skin so it's good to eat.
      This seems like a quick version of a preserved lemon, which doesn't look appealing. It would still be very crunchy and sour after only 25 minutes.

    This was stressful for you because you, it seems, don't cook. I wouldn't rule this out from just the first time. Cooking takes practise. Chopping and slicing takes technique, if you want to be quick at it. Also, cooking time does not include prep time, so that is why it took longer than you were anticipating. It should provide you with both times and a total of them combined, so that's annoying they don't. Lastly, you actually chopped that lemon up with the skin on??!!!!! 😱 oh god...

    • @audreywhalen5141
      @audreywhalen5141 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Perhaps no one noticed this was the "Tech Insider" channel. This is not a "how to" video. It is *supposed* to be a noobish experience. The single-techie-hipster living in a metro-micro apartment (with 2 beers and 1 carton of eggs in his fridge) is not the primary market for these fresh delivery services. It was absolutely enjoyable to see if someone with little to no cooking skill can pick up the instructions and execute the meal as intended. It was also informative (ex. In contrast to Blue Apron, Hello Fresh pre-chops many of its ingredients, which could cut prep time and difficulty immensely; potentially appealing to a wider consumer base). His final plated dish emerging from the kitchen would definitely impress a date.

Second of all, he’s chopping is probably the hardest and most time consuming chopping I have ever seen! The fish looks dry and the fact that he didn’t even wash the cucumber disgusts me. Sorry to say this but I think you need to make a new video when your kitchen skills have grown.

      lise Johanne As a chef too, what worried me was his 'top rock' cuts, where is fingers are on the side of the blade and could have very easily slid down and under the blade, cutting the finger.

    Fun fact: Cook time is separate from prep time. Prep time is chopping everything and getting ready. Cook time starts when you well... Start cooking.

    This is so wasteful and stupid. I don't know what's worse this or Amazon groceries. They accumulate tons of packaging waste, especially with the 10+ dry ice packs used in shipping. Watch cooking tutorials and learn to grocery shop. It's healthier for you and the environment. I wish TH-camrs would stop promoting things without consideration.

      You don't know what you are talking about. Grocers contribute massively to food waste and promote over-consumption and bad diets. All the packing materials in BA or other services are recycled and you only get enough to make a well proportioned meal instead of dumpster bins full of half eaten/used items. A single large delivery truck distributing items is more efficient then all the buyers individually making their way to the store and back.

      I have news for you if you think grocery stores are any better in terms of wastefulness

      agreed. all those things could have been picked up with a brief walk through the grocery store, and probably for a bit less money too.

    They can’t send the food already cut? And pre-measured ingredients? Also, we have microwaveable food if you need it to be able to be made faster.
