Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam, is a place I'm extremely excited to visit today! In my opinion, this city is home to what is undoubtedly the VIBE of all vibes when it comes to street food.
I first visited HCM City in 2009, and although I had pretty much no idea what was going on (maybe I still don't), I know that it was nowhere near as fast, as hectic, or as HUNGRY, as Ho Chi Minh City is today in 2022.
Something you'll notice instantly is that this is a city that lives on motorbikes! Its almost unreal, it is mind-blowing to witness the traffic here (try and drive here for yourself?), and so can you imagine what it takes to deliver over a MILLION takeout orders every single day? Well, then you can also imagine how popular some modern delivery apps like GRAB or SHOPEE are...
So, on our first day, walking down the street from our hotel it was without a second thought that we suddenly found ourselves in line for our first Banh Mi Vietnamese mini-baguette. Fighting with a few dozen delivery-app drivers (I couldn't be more happy with the situation, felt just like old times), I thought it would be a good chance to simply greet you in the tastiest way possible.
This is our first trip together to Vietnam, Li and I are very excited starting our first week here, and we are SO happy and grateful that you are choosing to spend time with us.

Hey Joel. Another nice video, I love Bahn Mi. I went to Ho Chi Minh City in early November this year. My first night, I went out in search of some noodles and found a street-side stall selling bun bo hue, so I ordered a bowl. I asked the lady how much (neither of us could speak the other's language) and she showed me a 50,000 dong bill so I went to give her a 100,000 dong bill. She refused and again pointed to the 50,000 dong bill. Felling very confused, we went backwards and forwards like this a few times before I realised that I was not holding 100,000 dong, but a 10,000 dong bill instead..... She was a very nice and patient lady.
Growing up as a young kid in the late 60’s and early 70’s watching the evening news coverage of the Vietnam war , you would never know this is the same place , so happy the people bounced back and the city is thriving.

Yummmm!!! I was in Hanoi, Nha Trang, Bangkok, and all over Philippines last month. It was my first time in Vietnam, and I LOVED it!!! The nicest people, loved the chaos, the charming buildings & scenery, coffee, and the fooooood!!! Haha

Big fan of Vietnamese food. French influenced and not as spicy as Thai food. Try the iced drip coffee with condensed milk. Super strong and the condensed milk adds an interesting smoothness.

My favorite is the pork ham, headcheese with liver pate, mayonnaise, soy sauce, pickled dicons, carrot, cucumber slices and jalapeno slices.🤤😋🤙🏽 The fresh baked bread are what makes the banh mis crispy and delicious. It looks like you had the pork ham and headcheese banh mi Joel. $2 for the banh mi is a great deal.

It’s good but locals don’t like it because it’s too much meat. I was in Vietnam last week and tried one for 62k vnd at Banh Mi Huynh Hoa. They are just banking it each and everyday because it’s a tourist attraction. The banh mi is too big. U can feed 3 people with that. I usually would buy the 20k vnd version which is just as good and won’t make you too full afterwards 😂

I wish Thailand did bread... that is something I do truly miss out eating... I have tried and tried to convince farang here to just smile and say hello to shop owners it does wonders to break any ice and let them know you are approachable. These guys are grumbling and fussing about these folks not speaking English, well guess what cupcake? You are not in an English speaking country. While listening to their mumbling I push past with a Sa-wat-dee-krup and a huge grin or laughter and point to the foods I want and ask Tal-rai-mi looking I usually have twice the food of my Thai counterparts and the staff usually find one person that speaks a little English to say hey and where are you from. Next time I am there they yell out 'Hey Jim!' But I am an extreme extrovert. :) The sandwich looked amazing, I am jealous.. lol but I never found a spot on my palate that loved that stringed pork... Peace be unto you my brother enjoy every second!
Jim sir, I absolutely agree, the only thing I missed in my two pilgrimages in Thailand was bread... and yes, smiling and being open and respectful... I learned a bit of Thai before actually going, and I learned how to "wai", it means the world to them, and I got so many words of gratefulness and smiles, it was just great... thank you 🙏👍

Thanks Joel, my mouth is salivating now. The last time I had a Vietnamese sandwich was when I went to Chinatown (NYC) and bought from a street vendor. Almost the same ingredients as you just described. Certainly a French influence in that sandwich (French Indochina).

First time watching you and I love the quality and editing in this video. Banh Mi's crucial ingredient is the pate since each brand has their own recipe. The meat is mostly cold cuts of beef and pork. Yours is the premium/luxury version of Banh Mi but people can grab any normal version which costs around 15~20k and their experience will just be as good. Can't wait for more of your videos.

Those sandwiches are indeed super!. But I disagree that you mentioned that Vietnam has more street food energy in the entire world. You should know better that Thailand is THE capital of street food. Vietnam will be close that's for sure, but cannot compete with Thailand.
That’s a great message Dino, wow :) I don’t know how much of a discussion we could get into in just a TH-cam comment section but, I live in Thailand (you can see I have over 200 videos on “Thai street food”) not only have I been hunting down the best Thai street food for fun for over 13 years, I’ve even been doing it as a job! I still don’t think this has me deserving an “expert” title for anything, but just letting you know that I truly mean what I say, it’s a BIG statement (you’re right!) - I do think that the actual experience here is more intense, more all-encompassing of the senses, more in your face, than anywhere in the world.
