      Given that an iPhone has a better battery life playing AAA games with more pixels in its screen, the battery life on this thing is atrocious. What we need is for AMD to make an ARM-based chip and work with Valve to create a hardware-based translation layer for the Steam Deck 2. Then, it would not only give them amazing battery life, but an edge over every other handheld that couldn't have a bespoke hardware and software-based translation layer in their handhelds running Windows. Maybe I'm just on some serious copium, but I really do believe this is in their best interest to do this.

    Amazing device for the money.
    Imagine thinking in 2015 that in a few years we would be playing (outside the most demanding ones) current gen titles in a portable form factor with a top of the line screen.

    I am great fan of the Steam Deck because it's designed to be a handheld gaming console first, and this is reflected by both Valve's and the community's excellent support for this device. Yes, it would be nice to have a more powerful APU, but I would rather a stable platform for 2 to 4 years where game developers optimise for this platform rather than chasing every new technological development, and then suffering from buyer's remorse immediately the next gaming handheld is released with the latest and greatest APU. Since owning a Steam Deck, I have not been tempted by any of the latest Windows Gaming handhelds because Valve's design philosophy, Steam OS and support model works for me. I might buy an OLED Steam Deck though because the new display is a game changer, I would like more storage, and the other improvements are worthwhile.

    Ive ordered the OLED and i think ill be dropping my rog ally for it to be honest, having used the ally for almost 6 months now almost exclusively (got LCD deck too) ive come to realize the ally just isnt that refined. It always comes down to the little things as stupid as they may be but they make the user experience a tier up on deck. The deck offers so much better community integration, custom control schemes, custom software features etc The OS just feels integrated on deck while on the ally the software feels tacked on as an overlay which is essentially what it is - but with that comes little hiccups that rock the experience like just tapping the bumpers to switch screens in armory crate causes freezes and a second or two before changing, it feels pretty bad. Even down to the minor things like having a battery life estimate, it seems like such a simple and obvious quality of life feature that encourages you to tweak settings to gain minutes, its a game in itself lol. The sleep mode on deck is just something else too, sooo many little things that make a big difference.
    Ultimately i chose the ally to play games over the last few months because the gaming experience was better, better screen, better sound, better performance but with the OLED deck they just fixed almost everything that was wrong with it and it speaks volumes about what valve is about. Im really just not that bothered about losing performance either, AAA games that run poor on deck still run poor on ally just a little less poor, so what ive come to realize is indie games are the one for handhelds and performance on all the handhelds in indies is excellent.

    • @hanspecans

      The deck is a PERFECT backlog killer. AAA games from just a few years ago run perfectly. And thousands of games from consoles run perfect in emulation. I haven’t used my consoles (besides the switch) since I got the deck. I end up playing a ton of PS2 games and a lot of games I missed or want to play again from the 2005-2017 era.

      @jinx20001 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hunterhunter-ch4ps couldn't say for sure because im waiting on the OLED to arrive but the only downside i can see to the deck is power... if you plan to play AAA games then the power of the ally will be needed to be honest, but AAA games will be a struggle either way, as far as im concerned the 7840u/z1 extreme is just not good enough for AAA games and when playing indie games the deck is in a league of its own because it performs better at lower wattage so performance is good, battery life improved, heat reduced... on top of it now having an OLED display, improved speakers, bigger battery, excellent slick UI... the list goes on and on, i just dont see how the Ally can be a better device overall unless you absolutely need that power.
      i gave the ally a fair crack of the whip, im playing it right this second in fact, but its unrefined, its just a handheld windows pc that comes with fairly sloppy software (although that does improve usually with every update.)

      @@hunterhunter-ch4ps It depends, and it will be different for everyone. The Ally uses Windows which means you can play any game no matter what, it has better performance, better resolution (1080p) and a higher refresh rate (120hz) with variable refresh rate, but there are pros and cons to the ROG Ally. Same as there are pros and cons to this new OLED model, the biggest complaint people will have with the new OLED model is that the performance is still the same as the LCD model which can be off putting for a lot of people. If you care about performance and playing the latest triple a games, then I would suggest the ROG Ally, but if you aren't as bothered then the Steam Deck OLED.
      If you give it another week or two, I am sure there will be plenty of videos coming out that will do direct head to head of various handheld devices to help make you make a decision!

      Why would you buy a handheld console for something like that? It’s pretty much just a gaming device I wouldn’t rely on it for workflow, I guess you would just be doing light stuff but anime doesn’t even get produced in 4k. I mean it’s your money I guess. Might as well just get a cheaper laptop and plug it into a 4k monitor should be fine and that would’ve been a bit cheaper than a steam deck. And uh you bought an oled deck with the intention of basically not using it in handheld? So you would have your oled charging anyway and also wouldn’t need the better battery, you could’ve saved money and just bought a original deck model for cheap reused.

      Here's the thing, the Steam Deck had its entire operating system built for handheld gaming. The other guys may be more powerful, but they're shoehorning windows into it. So from my understanding, you'll have a better experience with the Steam Deck OLED. Just remember that it runs Linux, so some games won't be playable because their anti-cheat hasn't been updated to support the Steam Deck.

      TDP is not directly translatable between different chips. 15W TDP OLED Steam Deck pulls less power than 15W TDP LCD Steam Deck as seen in this video.
