Honestly idk, if I were to get a steam deck, which I doubt I will, I would wait for the steam deck 2 and either buy that one or get the old model at a decreased price depending on how good the steam deck 2 is
I think the star of the show is the fact that it has HDR at all. HDR has been the bane of Linux's existence for some time now, and the fact that Valve got this working as flawlessly as they have is a testament to the serious work they and the community have put into the Linux gaming ecosystem! As for the battery life improvement, they were actually pretty spot on when they said a 50% improvement. It's a combination of many things, not the least of which being the move to 6 nanometer. The whole unit is more efficient and LTT even tested it, and they got about a 45% Improvement over the old one. So Valve's claim is accurate.
The fact that the Oled is cheaper than the LCD 512 GB model that I was already saving up for and has the same storage space is a pretty big deal to me, they can't keep getting away with this.
Too bad they didnt have a cheaper 64gb oled model for $450 instead. Then i could have gotten a 1tb ssd for $70 with the savings.. im going to swap the ssd eventually anyway, 512gb is too small.
13:10 it's an important distinction that the Steam Deck "anti-glare" is not a coating but is etched glass. It looks dramatically better than anti glare coatings (like many monitros have) which will diffuse fine lines and text. I've had the 512 for over a year and love the etched glass too.
Honestly I don’t. I take better colors over not seeing myself in the reflection. Not that it really matters on the LCD model, but it might make a huge difference on the OLED model
@@zekiz774 well, you will not only see yourself, you will see all your surroundings on the screen at normal light. You will only have an advantage in colour and black in a complete dark room.
It all depends on use case. If you can control the lighting in the area or angle the display away from glare, glossy is simply better. But in a well lit area with a device that would be a mirror if it were glossy, anti glare is better. It all depends.
@@willuigi64 lol that's not even true. you can't control the lighting ANYWHERE in a way to reduce glare with a glossy screen except turn off all the lights. y'all been just drinking the Dave2D water without really thinking or having used a similar device. ALLLLL these content creators are saying how beautiful the screen is on the etched version. are they dumb? no.
the fact that we can see difference in screens already just by watching this video shows how much of improvement OLED is, now its getting more interesting to get a steamdeck
I have a 256gb steam deck that i bought a year ago and i recently upgraded it to a 2tb ssd and this oled model REALLY makes me want to upgrade to it and maybe gift my old one to a cousin or friend
One thing to consider is that Valve is still selling the older LCD models with a big discount for a limited time. You can get the 64GB model for $350, which is still a good deal, or a refurbished one for $280, whici is absolutely crazy for what you get (if you can get one, of course). Just add a 512GB SSD, a 512GB SD card and you can get a 1TB-ish Steam Deck for around $350, it's still an extremely good deal, even if you just want to use emulators on it.
Yeah I went for the discounted 512gb myself! Worst case scenario I can sell it later for an OLED. Best case scenario, this stays my gaming machine until Steam D2 or their VR thing.
The extremely wide battery life range makes a lot of sense, as that is the difference between playing a demanding recent AAA game and a not so demaning indie game. And 2 to 3, 8 to 12 hours are both a 50% improvement. PC Gamer tested it in their review and their findings agreed with Valve's battery life improvement: the battery life of the LCD one compared to the OLED one (with HDR off), running Diablo 4 went from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours, and running Vampire Survivors that went from 5 hours to 8 hours and 20 minutes. That's a 67% and 60% improvement, respectively, so that checks out for these games! With HDR off for VS, by the way, with it on the OLED only lasted about 6 hours, but it didn't impact battery life for Diablo 4 (HDR on did negatively impact battery life in other AAA games)
One thing I like about the etched glass versus the glossy finish as well is that whenever I’m playing with a device that has a glossy finish I can sometimes catch a very detailed version of my face looking back at me, and with the etched glass it’s more like I’m looking at an outline of a person, not saying I’m afraid of my own reflection, but sometimes seeing a face reflected back at you can be startling when you’re just trying to focus on playing games.
@@TacoTrainer the worse part for me is loading up Snapchat and not being prepared to see my “resting face” pointed back at me in full color and detail, and usually at an unflattering angle. Lol It’s a real wake up call sometimes, because I feel like a lot of us have a tendency to subconsciously pick the best angle when looking at a standard mirror, since we’ve done it so many times. When looking at a phone, unless we know the camera is about to load up we’re usually just back arched, chin against chest, all muscles in the face relaxed and eyes wide open, Phone usually beneath us pointing upwards, worst lighting possible, non-groomed, and potentially no make up if you’re a lady. lol I’d say the only mirrors that actually catch us by surprised are the ones you see in like dingy bathrooms at gas stations in the middle of the night that use those fluorescent bright bulbs that just reveal all of your faults and blemishes. Lol
That was the funniest intro to a sponsor segment I've ever seen, people in this coffee shop think I'm crazy now with how much I'm silently laughing lmao
I’m a big fan of this upgrade-it’s substantial, tantalizing, even, to a current LCD owner like me, but it doesn’t feel like my old Deck is suddenly irrelevant like some upgrades have a tendency to induce. Probably just going to hold on to my trusty device until the APUs get the “big enough bump” that Valve is waiting for.
The reason the SSD swap works is that Valve is keeping the software for the two units exactly the same. It just has some if statements to change some behaviors based on what device is being used.
I bet the next iteration will have space for a second full size SSD, it raises cost to production but it would sell out as youtube tech channels show decks with more than 10TB of storage, people will clamor to replace their old deck.
@@anderssorenson9998 there's already a lot of freed space in the new mainboard, but I don't see a deck 2.0 wasting that space somehow on the first iteration...
@@YounesLayachiagreed- I would imagine SD2 being slightly smaller somehow, maybe thinner and with different ergonomics. Anyway, I'm personally itching for a Steam Controller 2... they show the old controller all over the place but they don't sell it, and my single old steam controller is finally beginning to show its age
It's nice to hear someone provide a positive opinion on the whole etched glass thing. I'm sure it does make a difference (ultimately it's inevitible, physics and all), but I can't help but feel like I'd prefer the reduced glare in bright/outdoor situations more than the fact I'm not getting 100% clarity (I'm not exactly pixel peeping when playing steam deck, I do enough of that on my PC lmao)
The steam deck cant even play 50% of games because it doesnt run windows. The legion go and asus allie both run every single game. Yet people buy this pile of steaming garbage bc "oled" meanwhile 90% of those people cant even tell the difference. And we wonder why corporations run western countries instead of the citizens. Stupidly pathetic.
The antiglare coating reduces glare quite well I fully agree that it's technically better. I just grew up with a gameboy color and gameboy advance, so I grew up with a specific type of glare when gaming outside. If I grew up with antiglare coating I would prefer that.
Upgrading doesn't make sense for me. Everything that the stock Steam Deck can't handle I just run on the PC/OLED TV just fine...but boy I'd love to have one of these!
I got my wife a 512 GB OLED after she tried my launch model. I really like the upgrades and if I didn't have one already I would probably get one. But I'm still extremely happy with my current one. She thought I would take the new one and pass down mine, but I think the new features will benefit her more than me.
You have become the world's number one authority on OLED burn in testing, Bob. Everyone, every channel, every news outlet mentions you. We're all counting on you to test the Deck!
Rocking the older 512GB LCD model for about 4 months so far, and I'm plenty happy with it, but I am happy that Valve offers the same capacity with new OLED for $100 less now and otherwise doubles the stock storage for the same price point as what mine was sold for. If I was to suggest one to a person interested in the Steam Deck now; it'd be the 512GB or 1TB OLED models for the extra niceties those two have over the 256GB LCD version.
See i feel this somewhat too but at the same time, at least they didnt screw us by making the new one too good or ours worthless. The price stayed almost the same and made it easier for those who dont have one to get one. The og steam deck is still just as good
I just got a second hand steam deck, 1TB SSD 1TB SD card and a jsaux mod case. I am frickin in love with it and I don't know how, but it was only €380 so I got a frigging steal
The RE Remake games don't have great implementation of HDR IIRC, which may be part of the reason the difference isn't very apparent. Also the HDR calibration menu in many games are not very accurate, so while the calibration settings look good on the example image in the menu, once in game it can end up looking very flat or washed out. Very common for the peak brightness setting to not match up with what gets displayed at all for instance. When a game does HDR well it's absolutely amazing. When it's implemented poorly it can often look better to just disable it.
@@brianharelick4962Ori's HDR deviates heavily from the SDR counterpart (which is very likely the intended color grade), it's just too saturated. So no, Ori is also pretty bad
I hope you don’t feel obligated to test out burn in for any handheld device with an OLED screen. Anyways, thanks for the review. If I had the money I’d certainly consider this.
I opted for buying the $400 256gb model the other day because I tend to not play super intensive or high end games anyways. I really appreciated them dropping prices and cant wait for it to get here (take bets on how long I hold out before buying a new SSD for it).
Whatever suits you best. When I was browsing the available options there is a lot to choose from. New models (2 variants), older ones as well as cheaper refurbished. I went with 512GB OLED one, I’m waiting for it, based on options on YT as well as my friends experiences I strongly believe I will like the device, what I’m hoping for is that I will love it :)
The improved battery life is also due to the more efficient OLED panel. This is also why OLED TVs and monitors can be more energy efficient than even smaller LCD displays. Some more research would have been appreciated for this and the comments about HDR.
Sort of love and hate how Steam Deck is the only PC handheld actually trying to compete in efficiency. The other manufacturers seem to forget that their handhelds aren't laptops, and should be trying to stay off the wall charger. There's plenty of handhelds out now, but Steam Deck is essentially in its own tier.
Dude, i remember when it first came out and your review was pretty lukewarm about the Steam Deck. It's nice to see you've come around and appreciate the ease of use and consumer oriented attitude that Valve continues to bake into this thing. I have an LCD steam deck and I immediately decided that the upgrade would be worth it. I didn't like the slippery texture on the original deck and bought caps immediately. I sent my deck in to be repaired after my son dropped it and the left bumper stopped working and now after the repair it doesn't feel the same, so hearing that they feel more clicky and responsive from you and other users is a big plus for me. The improvements to the polling rate of the screen and trackpads will make input easier, where I felt this was definitely somewhere Valve compromised on the original Deck. And the slightly larger screen, which fills out the bezel's more nicely, where the LCD model, i felt, had too much bezel, is also important to me. LET ALONE, that it is now OLED w/ 90 hrz. It's a matter of saving the money to buy it for me.
I like the device but buying makes no sense for me for many reasons. First Valve basically only serves the US and few others so for most of us in the world is buying threw ebay which adds a scalper premium on the price. Second I have very few games on Steam itself. Most of my games are on GOG because I love getting DRM free games and support DRM free. Sure with games like on GOG that you can do as want with without needing the GOG launcher etc it means you can find workarounds to make them play on Steam Deck but I don't know if I want to go threw the hassle. One of the other Windows handhelds probably makes more sense for my case. Third. I already own a Switch with plenty of games so is not like I don't have a device when I need some handheld gaming.
I bought the steam deck because they introduced the refurbished program, quickly fell in love with it and now fomo made me buy the new oled. I'm already selling my lcd deck after 2 months of owning it. This may sound stupid (it is), but i really do use the deck a ton and the oled model addresses most of my grievances with the old one
Whatever suits you best. Someone will get your LCD one and hopefully will be happy, you will get the new OLED one and you already know what to expect. For me I was looking for a laptop but the ones I like (high TGP) started from 2.5k EUR, so I decided to buy Steam Deck OLED 512GB plus dock. Sure there will be additional costs mouse+keyboard and micro sd card. Steam Deck can work as Linux PC (low power one), but doing basic things should not be a problem. And maybe finally I will have more motivation to play some older and newer games from the backlog.
I had the anti glare coated LCD version. The biggest issue with it is that the moment you put a screen protector on it you lose it. So unless you use the deck without a screen protector It doesn't add anything.
I recently got the steam deck as a birthday present and honestly, while everything in the new model seems great, I've been great with what I have. I've been able to go on trips without any issues and it's great for daily gaming. (From someone that doesn't have a PC.) I don't think it's worth an upgrade but it's probably worth it if you didn't buy a deck yet. But I always enjoy hearing your input on these devices~
My Ambernic RG350M just died, and after a new battery didn't fix it I said screw it and pulled the trigger on the 1TB OLED. I thought the concept was cool since the first launch, but this refresh is icing on the cake. I just got it 2 days ago, and so far it's great. I love the fact that it is built to be repaired/upgraded/tinkered with, and the software is so open too! I try to support products with those goals in mind.
The main reason I prefer the non-etched glass is that once in a while I catch a glimpse of how disheveled I look after playing my steam deck too long, and it’s a good reminder to go shower.
Steamdeck needs retail support. It's only available at first world countries. For example, Lenovo Legion and Asus Rog Ally available in my country thru official distributors but not Steamdeck.
Legion Go is million times more powerful than the Steam Deck but it is available everywhere unlike the Steam Deck. Valve is the worst and most pathetic company in the world
This release has convinced me to go with a Steam deck over picking up one of the Windows units. However, I’m working on getting other things paid off at the moment and this will have to wait.
i'll say right now, the upgrade to OLED actually pushed me towards finally getting the LCD version. for $375 after shipping I don't mind the slightly lower specs, and since SSDs are much more available, the manual upgrade to 1TB still made more sense to me. i don't like burn-in on anything and while i'm aware it takes a while to happen, i want to rest easy knowing i simply won't need to worry about it. now is the time to grab the cheaper originals, before they're completely gone and shoot up on the aftermarket in price, if you don't mind the screen not being as pretty :)
Fully agree on this decision, got the launch 64gb version and battery life may not be great but I ain’t worried since I got a reliable power bank no problem! it’s that OLED ‘burn in’ that’s keeping me from upgrading, cause over time it will show some bad signs.
I got an OG 512 LCD Deck in early 2022 and it's awesome. I play it more than my PS5. Just nabbed the 1TB OLED. No regrets. Can't wait to have it in my greasy mitts. The old one will get chucked over to a nephew or something.
I got the 512 LCD back when they first came out, jumped at the chance to upgrade to the LTD edition 1 TB and it was worth every penny. On top of all the things you covered I just think it feels better in the hands than the previous model did. There's something about the way that the buttons/bumpers/trackpads respond to your input that's hard to describe but just feels so much more satisfying.
As cool as the OLED Steam Deck is, I am still very much happy with my Steam Deck. If I do look for an upgrade down the road I'll probably still keep my Steam Deck while getting the next gen Steam Deck, whenever that may be.
Best coffee advert ever! 😄 I am planning on upgrading to the OLED and giving my LCD as a xmas present. So many things have improved that make me feel it is worth it.
I’m not upgrading, sticking with my original SD model. I do think this is cool, but it would be expensive to keep up with every hardware revision they put out, and I don’t expect this to be the last one. I’ll get the next one. But I’m happy for those who waited, you’re definitely getting a cooler unit here.
I've been using my OG Steam Deck extensively since I got it at release. My only "problem" has been the screen, I wanted it to be bigger and better. So I got the OLED at release and could not be more pleased. The screen is not just bigger but way way better. If you are using your Deck a lot, I strongly suggest an upgrade. It is worth it.
The OG deck is great, but, the upgrades honestly put the new OLED one in a league of its own. Sure, there are still some faster options out there, but nothing that is as complete and polished of an experience. Plus, when games outpace the OLED performance, it will always be an absolutely fantastic game streamer.
Plus, we can be sure that valve will support the deck for a long time. We can’t trust other companies like Lenovo/asus to provide the same level of support
The reason matte or antiglare coatings suck imo, is that they spread out light of reflections to make it less sharp. so that blooming/spreading of the reflected light is also happening to the colours of the display on the other direction too, causing everything on screen to have a sort of hazy bloom albeit on a smaller scale but across the entire display. I think the only reason that this is being considered a "new" problem for oled (PC monitor/steamdeck) screens is that previously oleds were only on all glossy displays ie. phones, tablets and tvs so when they have a matte layer added it is noticably worse, these screens are not used in the same way to traditional PC monitors in an office environment where blurring the screen doesn't really matter as they are not used for the same sort of rich entertainment content. If you think about other products that "looks cool" but have glossy screens they are usually all the higher end looking ones, e.g. macbook screens, mac screens, large 4k TVs, all smartphones, tablets. I think that once you get the glossy edition it will become "clear" to you and hopefully to all the manufacturers too that glossy should always be an option and imo the default for gaming/entertainment displays no matter if it is oled, mini led, micro led, lcd, plasma, crt, dot matrix etc.
I owned the anti-glare screen on my previous Steam deck. However, my problem wasn't the colors but that the fingerprints were so damn hard to wipe off so I installed a screen protector with fingerprint resistance. Of course the anti-glare was gone but so was my fingerprint problem.
I bought a $15 box of 200 lens wipes when I got the deck and it's taken care of that (and I still have over a third of them after almost two years). The prints may be more noticeable than my Switch OLED but I haven't spent time checking the differences since the fingerprints on both devices annoy me.
i reason why i didnt bought the anti-glare version, 1st it was way more expensive 2nd a anti-glare screen protector is 10 bucks and i applied it, it does attract fingerprints pretty easy true, but im fine with it, not gonna touch the screen anyway
If you want to see image retention on a LED Steam Deck try playing the original Contra for a little while and then exit the game. I think it mostly happens on the segments you're shooting forward. Or go and look at that F-Zero battle royale having the same effect on original Switches. It's not necessarily dangerous and will go away but it probably will upset you the first time it happens
I'm telling you the Gospel Truth when I say: Left For Dead 2's entire "Item List"(you know, guns, pistols, melee, grenades first aid ect) Would Regulary! Retain the ENTIRE BAR and have me looking at the M16-Sillouette for like 15 minutes before it went away. This was such an issue to me I went out of my way to find a HUD changer that would color in the Silhouette so that the White would be lessened.
I believe someone did a test to see if there claims about the battery was true or not. They concluded based on all the power efficiency upgrades and the addition to the 50wh battery that it was around the claim percentage boost. Now if only I could resell my steam deck back to valve to get some sort of credit and buy the new one. That way they could also just refurbish my old one.
I am going to try to get the limited edition one and then give my original Streamdeck to my daughter who has been wanting one. Thanks for the great video.
They said they might do more limited editions if this works out, definitely very good looking with the translucent shells and orange accents (orange for Linux or AMD ? 🤓)
this has made me actually interested in picking one up finally. I love the handheld formfactor, and I'd actually get thru my games if i had one. not to mention, it's probably more powerful than my laptop, which is a bonus
I have an original steam deck that completely stopped working like 3 weeks ago and I was going to buy the Lenovo Legion Go to replace it and then this was announced! So I just bought the 512 GB version because I love how easy the steam deck is compared to a normal windows handheld and I don't want the etched glass version.
For anyone wondering about the image retention on the LCD: It gets it in like 30 seconds but you can just turn it off or do something else its not really that noticable
“My grandfather told me that if you have a good cup of coffee in the morning, you won’t need the touch of a woman. I was three”, absolutely sent me 😂 kudos for always having the best ads.
I already love my original 256gb, and won't be upgrading. Also, a lot of people don't like the anti-glare screen because it really interferes with screen protectors, which I always use. Best to keep it safe and look for shade if it's too bright.
What that could've made the lineup more appealing all around: -256gb LCD Deck: $350 -512gb OLED Deck: $499 -1tb OLED Deck: $549 -2tb OLED Deck: $649 -Limited Edition 2tb OLED Deck: $679 The OLED by itself is a massive cost and value boost, but the storage is still pissing me off. It's not a special NVMe, and a 2tb NVMe costs $80-100 for something worth your while on Amazon or Newegg. The value and price would be there that I think most people with the money would opt for Valve to do it vs having to do it themselves. Not me, I'd get the 512gb and harvest the SSD to put into something else. 😂 But that's part of why I love your channel, because you appeal to the DIY nerd crowd. ✌😁 (Side-note, I really hope that they take the hint from the Limited Edition and all the atomic purple shell swaps to just make color variants for the future. Maybe something like the Dualsense Edge where you can just click a notch and replace the sticks too. Maybe make the face plate swappable without having to unscrew the back.)
i’ve been rocking an outdated gaming laptop for about 6 years at this point and i’ve had my eye on the deck for a while. after seeing how much better it ran Bg3 than my laptop i was absolutely sold. i couldn’t justify spending 2k on a brand new pc because all of the AAA games i’m playing i just get on my ps5. The deck seems like an awesome upgrade/lateral move to let me finally tackle my insanely large backlog
I consider the high priced ones to be competing with gaming laptops, so there is no bad deals when looking at any deck option. Its just a matter of what you can afford.
Right up until yesterday I was all set to buy this when it launched today after I got rid of my deck a few months ago. Then last night I pivoted and bought an rog ally as it was available at £100 off meaning it was only £120 more than the launch price of the new deck. I’ve been playing with the ally for a while today and I’m glad I made this decision as it’s fantastic (enjoying it so much I’m gonna install a 4tb 2280 ssd) The screen is much better than the base steam deck but I don’t even need to see the oled deck in person to know that visually it’s going to be gorgeous and any first time deck owners are in for a treat. I’m glad the handheld pc space is evolving and there is a lot more choice for gamers (esp now the old deck is so cheap, that’s an absolute steal) I just hope we can move past this “console fanboy” nonsense that’s now made its way into this space. The way I see it is the steam deck is 100% the best option for traditionally console players jumping on. But if you are a pc gamer already then something like the rog or Lenovo go might be your better option because having access to things like gamepass on pc can save you so much money on the cost of buying games that the difference in price between the windows handhelds and the deck is easily offset.
Im considering getting the curren 256GB model for my gf since she doesn't care much for a framerate higher than 60fps, and if we need to upgrade the storage we can just get a microsd. Mind you, she's a Nintendo gal and has never owned a pc that was better than a school laptop. We're also on a little bit of a tighter budget and her steam library has yet to grow to a point where she'd need a bigger storage.
@@FunnyLittleGnome66if she’s into Nintendo games then she’d probably end up playing games smaller in size, right? So the 256 should be fine, especially if you end up grabbing a microSD. You totally should tho, free multiplayer and Steam sales may even end up saving you guys money lol.
I love my Steam Deck. I wasn’t sure how much I’d use it but knowing how much I used my Switch in handheld mode, I took a chance on it. My biggest gripe was the LCD screen because the Switch OLED is awesome. While I don’t *need* the limited edition Steam Deck OLED, I have the means to buy one so I did just that. I know how much I use it and the OLED panel alone is enough for me. For other people who own a steam deck already, if you don’t have the cash to burn, don’t do it. If you’re just now getting a steam deck, then absolutely get the OLED version.
I’m looking to get into the PC market. Do you think this would be worthwhile still or try to go with standard PC first? I’m interested in this because I use my switch the most since it’s a hybrid, so I could get the steam deck plus dock. Also, if you don’t mind answering these two questions: 1) Can you continue games with your Steam saves between the steam deck and a separate PC pretty easily? 2) Are you able to access Game Pass or at least XCloud on steam deck? Is it easy to do and good to play? 3) is it relatively easy to get some emulators runnings (game boy advance, Wii, GameCube, ds,…)
@@rusty8311 If you want to get into PC gaming then the Steam Deck isn't what I will suggest because it is quite different and much more limited. If you use handheld a lot it might be a good device for you from a personal use aspect but not a good device to actually experience what a PC can offer. Nothing can replace the traditional tower in that department and Steam Deck is even more limited than other things. My suggestion is get a tower PC and look for a Steam Deck down the line because without a tower you are always working with your hands tied behind your back. Just notice that this TH-camrs etc showing all this devices and playing with them almost always need to connect them to a traditional PC to import some files or do one or the other to get the most out of them etc. That is because a tower PC is the real multi-tool that expands your abilities.
I have been planning on getting my wife a Steam Deck for Christmas since early this year. I was waiting to see if they'd offer a deal for Black Friday. And I guess they sort of did, since they have lowered the price of the old model until they're sold. However it's tough to resist the OLED model so I did get my order in today. Hopefully it ships before Christmas. The checkout process was tough to get through so I may have to wait a bit.
The store is still saying 3-5 business days estimated delivery as of this evening, so you should be good. They even have the limited edition still available. I am really holding back since I should just stick to my 512gb model. But the LE model is tempting...
Why you, guys, calling it a fucking “Red Accent”? It’s freaking Orange! ORANGE, Guys! How do you call an “Orange Box” from Valve? “Red Box”? Da fuck, bro?
I think grabbing a refurbished lcd is the gaming bargain of the decade! If I can get an OG deck for £250, that’s a £229 saving in the uk. Even when I add a larger ssd and a micro sd I’m getting a damn good deal 🤘🏻
No they aren't talking about the huge big changes besides the screen because they know what they said about "not making a new Steam Deck for years". This is literally a Steam Deck 2 and they are not calling it that. First time in 15 years I've seen Valve do some trickery with its costumers and it's just sad. You can't even trade in the old Steam Deck or better yet those who bought during the summer sale or the yearly Steam Deck sale or those who bought through the refurbished/gamestop program. All of those customers all had in mind that they can buy a Steam Deck and not worry about another for at least 2-3 years. Valve did there people dirty and I actually feel it too because I own a Steam Deck and was told there wasn't going to be one for awhile. It's the same story we all have
Lmao this clearly isn’t a “new” Steam Deck - or a “Steam Deck 2”, if you will - so they weren’t lying… this is literally just a “Pro”-version at best. Would you call the Nintendo Switch OLED version a “Switch 2”? Nah, don’t think so either. They’re both essentially comparable to PS4, when Sony made a PS4 Pro (or whatever it was called specifically) deep into the PS4-cycle. A “revision” of an earlier, same model, at most. This isn’t an entirely new device; a “sequel”. Lol “trickery with customers” my ass 🥴
18:02 you didn't mention once the most important aspect of the new deck OLED screen : it can show far richer colours. (Check the packaging materials : the new colours are central to the marketing). HDR isn't only about peak brightness and contrast... The deck LCD caps at some 70% sRGB space, while deck OLED goes "120%" ie beyond sRGB and into P3 space with some 96%. The deck LCD's colours were so muted the settings default to boosting the colours to reach sRGB. The deck OLED's colours on the other hand are saturated enough to support sRGB by default as a minimum and the slider can only go up from there. And while 90 Hz is a bigger number, it's a double edged sword, with frame times suffering if they don't match the refresh rate. Thankfully, the deck can adjust the refresh rate per-game, and the inherent advantage of OLED is faster pixel response time compared to the blurry LCD movement. Valve aren't advertising 90 Hz because it's just a side effect of the new screen, there's not much performance or battery to really go beyond 60 FPS in most games.
I feel like I will upgrade it eventually but I’ll probably wait till around my birthday in August. Whenever a new device comes out there’s always gonna be some minor fixes for problems so that’s just in time to fix those. I’m just hoping that once I get the new SteamDeck I can sell my 1tb Modified steamdeck for about $300
I can answer that question about image retention, LCD screen image retention would happen first provided you are displaying something that will cause it. It only takes a couple of hours for my laptop. It goes away pretty fast too, though.
To all of you american friends from Greece.. PLEASE.. Don't drink the iced espresso like this!! Mix the coffee with two piece of ice, into a shaker with a mixer for 8 seconds THEN pour it on the glass! It is called Freddo espresso, thank me later ( two doses of coffee needed)
Ok so I never watch the in video ads on my favourite TH-cam channels but I always make an exception for these in video ads because they always crack me up! So damn funny and witty and sharp! Oh and the tech reviews are great too lol ;)
It's so disappointing the clear version is only available in US and Canada, seriously. I do not trust myself to change the shell and the limited edition version looks so good too.
Yes. The games are probably not optimized for the panel yet. Like using srgb hdr vs pq hdr. Digital foundry claims that it is basically like having an lg oled in a handheld, so it is good.
I would love to upgrade to the new model, but money is tight, I bought my Steam Deck on the aftermarket to begin with so I could get the maxed out model at the minimal price. Also, my Deck works just fine, I don't have any issue with it. When it stops working, or if it breaks I would definitely buy the newer model. They literally improved on everything I could ask for.
Glad to see pretty much every reviewer saying the etched glass version looks amazing, which is what you'd expect despite the enraged Reddit crowd. I don't know how people watched Dave2d's video and didn't look at the conditions or angles he was shooting with, but confirmation bias really is a thing. As always, get your data from multiple sources and not just the ones agreeing with what you already want to believe. And with that said I'm sure almost everyone who gets a glossy screen will also have a great time.
I was dumb and got the 1TB Steam Deck, but thanks to you I realized I got the wrong one and since upgraded to the Limited Edition one. Very Happy now, thanks Bob!
Honestly, this upgrade made me go from "okay having a steam deck could be cool" to "I will now buy a Steam Deck at some point soon-ish"
Just bought mine, super exited to have my steam account in my hands so I can play SF5
How soon ish? Stock is rapidly depleting

I trust Valve. I don't trust Linus for reviews, that has been clear ever since Gamer Nexus exposed Linus.
Credit where its due: the kde team and a lot of devs worked hard on HDR. Not just Valve.

@@zekiz774same, also the majority of my playing is home, or in the car waiting lol
@@zekiz774 well, you will not only see yourself, you will see all your surroundings on the screen at normal light. You will only have an advantage in colour and black in a complete dark room.

One thing to consider is that Valve is still selling the older LCD models with a big discount for a limited time. You can get the 64GB model for $350, which is still a good deal, or a refurbished one for $280, whici is absolutely crazy for what you get (if you can get one, of course). Just add a 512GB SSD, a 512GB SD card and you can get a 1TB-ish Steam Deck for around $350, it's still an extremely good deal, even if you just want to use emulators on it.
if you got the base 64gb model on the september or summer sale, you essentially purchased the 350 dollar deck today.

Lol
It’s a real wake up call sometimes, because I feel like a lot of us have a tendency to subconsciously pick the best angle when looking at a standard mirror, since we’ve done it so many times.
When looking at a phone, unless we know the camera is about to load up we’re usually just back arched, chin against chest, all muscles in the face relaxed and eyes wide open, Phone usually beneath us pointing upwards, worst lighting possible, non-groomed, and potentially no make up if you’re a lady. lol
I’d say the only mirrors that actually catch us by surprised are the ones you see in like dingy bathrooms at gas stations in the middle of the night that use those fluorescent bright bulbs that just reveal all of your faults and blemishes. Lol

I felt this way at first too. If it bothers me enough, I'll just pop an antiglare screen protector.

Surprised no one else mentioned this. RE4 has weak HDR. He should have tested Ori and the Will of the Wisps, or Forza Horizon, or even Doom Eternal.
There's plenty of handhelds out now, but Steam Deck is essentially in its own tier.
well the other manufacturers can't strike deals for custom hardware.... they have to run laptops chips or variants of those chips

I'm happy they improved the Steam Deck. But I think I'll still stick with my launch Deck and look forward to the next one in a couple of years.
When the darkness stares back at you.😅
Steamdeck needs retail support.

@@markgonzalez8828 Paid off the debt and just got my Deck. Loving it!
i'll say right now, the upgrade to OLED actually pushed me towards finally getting the LCD version. for $375 after shipping I don't mind the slightly lower specs, and since SSDs are much more available, the manual upgrade to 1TB still made more sense to me. i don't like burn-in on anything and while i'm aware it takes a while to happen, i want to rest easy knowing i simply won't need to worry about it. now is the time to grab the cheaper originals, before they're completely gone and shoot up on the aftermarket in price, if you don't mind the screen not being as pretty :)
There's something about the way that the buttons/bumpers/trackpads respond to your input that's hard to describe but just feels so much more satisfying.
the ad read at 2:22 has me in tears right now.
As cool as the OLED Steam Deck is, I am still very much happy with my Steam Deck.
If I do look for an upgrade down the road I'll probably still keep my Steam Deck while getting the next gen Steam Deck, whenever that may be.
They fixed almost everything the way they could, without bringing v2 out. I did order today and can't wait!
Best coffee advert ever! 😄
I am planning on upgrading to the OLED and giving my LCD as a xmas present. So many things have improved that make me feel it is worth it.
For identifying you could’ve just used the color of the joysticks, grey = lcd, black or orange = OLED
OLED > OLCD. How to turn a OLED into a LCD.
Did glossy protector make it better?
i reason why i didnt bought the anti-glare version, 1st it was way more expensive 2nd a anti-glare screen protector is 10 bucks and i applied it, it does attract fingerprints pretty easy true, but im fine with it, not gonna touch the screen anyway

NGL i used to be scared of burn in, your 2 years switch burnin test kind of cured that and didn't even think about it until ya brong it up
The 64gb refurbished deck was such a steal for a few seconds. $280!! $50-80 for a 1tb ssd and ya would have 1tb. or $359 for refurbished 512gb model
What that could've made the lineup more appealing all around:
-256gb LCD Deck: $350
-512gb OLED Deck: $499
-1tb OLED Deck: $549
-2tb OLED Deck: $649
-Limited Edition 2tb OLED Deck: $679
The OLED by itself is a massive cost and value boost, but the storage is still pissing me off. 😂
But that's part of why I love your channel, because you appeal to the DIY nerd crowd. ✌😁
(Side-note, I really hope that they take the hint from the Limited Edition and all the atomic purple shell swaps to just make color variants for the future.
I consider the high priced ones to be competing with gaming laptops, so there is no bad deals when looking at any deck option. Its just a matter of what you can afford.
I was already planning on getting a steam deck during the next steam sale, and now I want this upgraded version!
Right up until yesterday I was all set to buy this when it launched today after I got rid of my deck a few months ago.
Then last night I pivoted and bought an rog ally as it was available at £100 off meaning it was only £120 more than the launch price of the new deck.
I’ve been playing with the ally for a while today and I’m glad I made this decision as it’s fantastic (enjoying it so much I’m gonna install a 4tb 2280 ssd)
The screen is much better than the base steam deck but I don’t even need to see the oled deck in person to know that visually it’s going to be gorgeous and any first time deck owners are in for a treat.
Yes don't get me wrong I love the deck but I want gamepass
Im considering getting the curren 256GB model for my gf since she doesn't care much for a framerate higher than 60fps, and if we need to upgrade the storage we can just get a microsd.
Mind you, she's a Nintendo gal and has never owned a pc that was better than a school laptop.
We're also on a little bit of a tighter budget and her steam library has yet to grow to a point where she'd need a bigger storage.
The SSD is stupid easy to upgrade. Bob covered it in the video he showed him swapping the shell :)
@@Dracossaint I am aware, you're simply unaware how technically clumsy my gf XD
@@FunnyLittleGnome66if she’s into Nintendo games then she’d probably end up playing games smaller in size, right? So the 256 should be fine, especially if you end up grabbing a microSD.
You totally should tho, free multiplayer and Steam sales may even end up saving you guys money lol.
@@CaptainEffort If anything she can take from my library to check out games when I'm playing a non-steam game lol
Also, if you don’t mind answering these two questions:
1) Can you continue games with your Steam saves between the steam deck and a separate PC pretty easily?
Bruh,……the beginning line for the coffee promotion had me in stitches 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Why you, guys, calling it a fucking “Red Accent”? It’s freaking Orange! ORANGE, Guys! How do you call an “Orange Box” from Valve? “Red Box”? Da fuck, bro?
Just ordered 1T Steamdeck Oled 🎉😆💯% excited ! 🙃 Been waiting 🙌 On doing a lot of research for my first handheld . I went with customers reviews
I was able to grab a limited edition one soooo exited
18:02 you didn't mention once the most important aspect of the new deck OLED screen : it can show far richer colours.
(Check the packaging materials : the new colours are central to the marketing).
HDR isn't only about peak brightness and contrast...
The deck LCD caps at some 70% sRGB space,
while deck OLED goes "120%" ie beyond sRGB and into P3 space with some 96%.
I’m just hoping that once I get the new SteamDeck I can sell my 1tb Modified steamdeck for about $300
yes, that is my plan, sell the LCD 512GB model for around £300, it's still worth something
Going for the 512 for my birthday this year, the more I learn about the Steam Deck the more I love it over other handhelds.
Ordered the PlayStation portable and the steamdeck oled and I won’t be disappointed
Ok so I never watch the in video ads on my favourite TH-cam channels but I always make an exception for these in video ads because they always crack me up! So damn funny and witty and sharp!
Oh and the tech reviews are great too lol ;)
I fully want to upgrade to this newer one for that OLED. I play in handheld quite a bit.
I don’t have a steam deck yet, but by the time I can afford one another new model will be out again 🥲. Thank you for the review!💙
It's so disappointing the clear version is only available in US and Canada, seriously.
I do not trust myself to change the shell and the limited edition version looks so good too.
Lol i keep microfiber cloths on my desk constantly too 😅
Ordered mine on launch day. It arrives Saturday! I can’t effing wait!! It’s my first handheld pc !
Bob “let’s burn all OLEDS” Wulff
17:03 Wifi 6e is big for those that stream games locally from your beefier gaming rig
nice screen tho i'd wait for the deck2
Selling my current deck and ordered the limited edition
I ordered the limited edition deck as well. So excited.
Sold my 512GB LCD for $300 and just copped the Limited Edition, Can't wait!!
If I could get the smoky version I'd get it INSTANTLY
This guy makes the ads in a way that makes me not only want to watch them but SHARE THEM.
Hi Wulff, try HDR out on your TV and find out that it's actually really affective! Thanks for all your videos
Yes. The games are probably not optimized for the panel yet. Like using srgb hdr vs pq hdr. Digital foundry claims that it is basically like having an lg oled in a handheld, so it is good.
I've been binging Steam Deck OLED videos lately because I've got one on order as of this past Friday.
I'm extremely excited to get this thing.
It took me 41 minutes to order mine from launch at 1pm est.
At the top of the hour. Gl everyone
25 minutes for me.
@@eternalbeing3339hell yeah, I'm happy for ya! Here's hoping it doesn't take quarters this time to ship 😂
Will adding a screen protector better or worsen conditions?
I was dumb and got the 1TB Steam Deck, but thanks to you I realized I got the wrong one and since upgraded to the Limited Edition one. Very Happy now, thanks Bob!
