Finally a handheld for people with no deep pockets
both figuratively and literally lol
There’s like a million of them wtf are you talking about
no theres not@@50086gt
This comment goes 2 ways lol
Not sure what youre saying because there have been tons of good handhelds in this price range AND CHEAPER for years.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but in your video you discuss the mini-HDMI out and claim it does 1080; I believe this is slightly incorrect. The HDMI out does 720 out; to get 1080, you need to use the USB-C on the bottom.
This is correct.
Typically ETA
Noob question, does that mean that this device can possibly use dual monitors? One with the mini HDMI and the other with the usb-c to HDMI? Not a deal breaker, I must get this.
I hope Retroid Pocket continues to succeed. I'm also hoping we get a Retroid console with a Snapdragon chip some day.
One of my favorite things about my retroid pocket 2+ is I can dock it and use it like a switch for my older games. I love it. Definitely getting this when I get the money lol
True! Snapdragon chips are very well optimized for gaming!
Latest Dimensity SoC 9300 seems faster or at the same level as latest Snapdragon. SO they can stay with it. But those chips cost in the range of 150-220USD (just SoC). So, they can not be cheap now. In 2-3 years of course will be different story.
MTK chips always have decent benchmarking stats and it gives them the appearance of being as good as an SD chip of equal specs. It's when they put them to real world abuse that we find they're nowhere near Qualcom in quality. MTK is for budget builds..
I think this handheld with a SD 8 gen 3 would be amazing.
@@josephl3602 The chips are fine, they just need to get more support, which only happens when more devices use those chips.
Starting 2024 with a big leap of a handheld performance, LOVE IT!
This is gonna be awkward when you discover the Odin 2 pro….😅
except this ones cheaper xD@@mackdaddypeypey1consider a lite version of it xD
@@mackdaddypeypey1
I think the power it has for 200 dollars is pretty good
@@mobusargentumanema 200$ more? Nah dawg you’re shilling. Relax. It’s 199 vs 299 🤦🏾♂️
@@mackdaddypeypey1 when comparing apples to apples, the RP4 Pro ($199 USD) should be compared with the Odin 2 pro which is $369 USD. And in this case, yes it’s almost a $200 difference.
INCREDIBLE device. Right on the money. Getting one very soon!
The Dimensity 1100 is basically the Dimensity 8020, which is fantastic. I've had phones with both, from Poco & Motorola.
Can you play switch games with it?
@@Carcosahead yes, Switch emulation just isn't as well optimized or programmed yet, so-to-speak, for MediaTek processors, as it is for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors of course, but it's coming along, especially for the Dimensity chipsets. MediaTek Dimensity compatibility is something that the Yuzu developers are actively working on.
@@JustinPennito thanks for your response, I’m confident now to get a RP4Pro
@@Carcosaheadno dawg you cannot emulate switch smoothly on this. You’re gonna want an Odin 2 pro for that. Switch is famous for eating a ton of memory. Most recommend OVER 8 gbs which this doesn’t have.
My 16 bit US variant just shipped. Exciting times for handhelds young lad.
Nice!! Great review on the RP4 Pro. Thanks for testing out MVC2 dude.
Video we've been waiting since the reveal! Amazing review 👏 I would like to point out, the sticks are not like the switch, at least not exactly. They're from the rp flip, much bigger and more range. Can't wait to get mines in hand!
I might be picking one of these up. Looks really cool
Very informative review! Thanks.
Thanks for this and for getting the red version!!! Wanted to see what is actually looks like....
ill tell you boss-man ever since you started having the devices on in the box and taking them out i want to buy everything lol. HAPPY NEW YEAR sorry lil late
I really enjoyed this showcase/first look video. I liked how you used a stock photo of the 16 bit model as a picture frame of sorts for your video capture segment. It wasn't needed, but it was cool and I appreciate the extra attention to detail.
As far as games go I'm a sports and driving game fan, especially rally racing. Games I'd like to see tested:
· "WRC Rally Evolved" - the magnum opus WRC game from Sony and Evolution Studios - is very hard to run. I've never been able to figure out how to get it to run acceptably on my SD845 phone. It's a legendary game and if it could run here at full speed that would be a huge selling point for me.
· "Colin McRae 05" is another very hard to run PS2 game. Even the PSP version is lag city until you disable the sun using block transfer effects in PPSSPP's settings (they've since renamed that option to something I don't remember). If that version is unacceptable to you, 3 and 2004 are fine too.
· "Richard Burns Rally" was absolutely amazing. The PC version still has a modding community. In cockpit view the PS2 version will almost run well on my phone until thermal throttling starts. I haven't played it enough yet to figure out if there's a special settings configuration that will work. It should be child's play here though. Maybe.
· "Madden 12" for the PS2 is the last non-crappy Madden because for the last five years of PS2 Madden, EA basically just rolled with roster updates to "Madden 07". I'm much more of an "NFL 2K5" guy though. That's what is on my phone. 2K5 runs well on it with a slight underclock. The last time I tried Madden it was not ideal. Granted that was quite a few revisions of Aether ago. It might be fine now. I should reinstall it and see; but, I'm almost out of storage, 64GB yo(!) and there's nothing I want to delete yet. If it didn't run well here then that'd tell me there's no point in trying it on my phone.
· "MVP Baseball 2005" is, in a lot of people's opinions, one of the finest baseball sims ever made. The PC version still has a huge modding community. The PS2 version runs on my phone like a slideshow where the clicker is manned by a drunk guy just on the verge of passing out. It's not ideal. If it could run well on this at 1X or better that would be a huge selling point for me.
Excellent video, uncle ETA. Any chance of seeing that teardown video of the AceMagic Tank 03 you promised??? Please.
Shadow of the Colossus! What settings/hacks can you apply to the rp4p to run SotC at max/consistent fps - be it lowering to 0.5x resolution or shader caching, I wanna know, thanks!
Another great video, been waiting on your look on this exiting new handheld.
A few things I would like to see on a follow up video
- Xbox Game Pass streaming and PS5 remote play
- N64 and Saturn emulation
- Some King of Fighters emulation, I really would love some confirmation from at least one reviewer that "pretzel motion" inputs are easy to pull off on this handheld
- What the limits of Yuzu emulation are on this thing
Thanks for the great work over the years ETA PRIME
I just ordered this, cannot wait to get started with it.
@@Days_of_the_Righteous I haven't :( took them like 12 days to even ship the thing. Its actually on its way now though. I'll let you know when it comes.
Arrived today :D
@@GLEclipseGaming how is it?
@@westlee1626 Honestly it's pretty great. I'm still figuring out how it all works but what I've got working has been flawless.
@@westlee1626 Pretty great to be honest. it does everything I'd hoped it would. I got EmulationStation up and running and it looks so sleek. I've only really tested PS2, Gamecube and Dreamcast on it and for the most part it runs great. not gonna bother with Switch though since I have an actual Switch for that lol.
Is there any chance you can throw in a few of the Netflix games on Android based devices? I don't know if it will work on these devices, or if it will recognize the controller, but since Netflix is throwing games like the older GTAs and more modern indie games it would be interesting to see how these devices handle them.
i wouldn’t mind seeing pokémon colosseum or monster hunter 3 ultimate running on that thing appreciate all you guys do for the hobby i’m just getting into it :)
Using an updated ExaGear I can play Fallout 3 in the wasteland on the RP3+ but I’d love to know if you can run more of the game on the RP4Pro?
Do You have to add your own roms isos etc ? Doesnt come with games at all ? Curious.. interesting...do you need to replace or add own sd cards ?
Do we have to set up emulators again or will everything just be transferred via an SD card? I am new to emulators and had the hardest time setting up my Pocket Flip and still haven't figured out how to do PlayStation 2 games.
ETA Prime I love your videos, could you test the Acer swift go 14 with an m.2 to oculink egpu. Please I'm looking into this
Do you plan to test the upcoming Gameforce ACE too?
Looks like a great handheld! How is the remote ps5 play on it ?
Can you try box86 or something similar to run some older x86 games on ARM? Just so we can see how these faster ARM processors handle Steam
great review ..i luv too have this handheld..
Hello, I'm very new to retro handhelds. Was wondering if I am able to download the rom files directly from the handheld system if I wanted to through a web browser via the android OS? I use a tablet rather than a computer so transferring files through an SD card might be a challenge
Why would you cycle change the camera view for playing that Gran Turismo 4 tho? I'm a bit curious. Why?
I was very close to getting this one. The deal breaker was screen size. I really wanted something closer to a switch size so I coughed up the extea cash and orders an Odin 2. Just a bit bigger screen on the retroid and I would have gone with it.
plus this device hurts ur hand after 30 min of playing its like playing on a skinny smart phone the thicker ordin makes it perfect to hold for long hours
@@CHICKENmcNUGGIESMydude yup, I have big hands and I was worried about that too. The price was the main selling point of the RP4 but playing games in 3:4 aspect on that would just be too small for me to enjoy.
Funny, exact opposite for me, if I buy a handheld I want a pocketable device not one I need a bag to carry, so I went with this
@@CHICKENmcNUGGIESMydudesame form factor on switch, if you own one it'll do the same damage...
I ordered retroid pocket 4 pro on dec 27. Actually immediately with the grip and the case, unavoidable purchases- really. But then started worrying about the screen and about the green tint. Odin 2 costs about 400€ in holland, retroid with all aforementioned bits and shipping was about 230$. If the screen really realy proves bad/ small i will sell it and splash more on the odin/ steam deck etc. However i am very hopeful
I love that lite blue DSI. ❤
Docking capabilities? Charging, usb hub, and video at same time?
I still have my RP2, i cant wait for an upgrade and this looks promising :,)
I pre-ordered and am very excited, but do you guys think the screen is too small for DS games? I'm going to stick with it but I'm worried it might be hard to see as I'm getting older lol.
I played Castlevania Order of Ecclesia on my RP3+, which has the same screen as the RP4 Pro. It wasn’t a bad experience as I just had one screen active at a time and used hot keys to swap between the DS’s top and bottom. I can see the challenge if a game requires one to look at both screens at the same time. 4.7 inches is not a good size for that…
Just ordered my first emulator rg35xx H, would i be better off returning that and getting one of these for emulating mostly Pokémon games?
If I buy one do I have to download the games myself or is it preloaded already?
Wow, look at those benchmarks! Glad I didn't waste my money on the RP3+.
Do these games come preloaded or do you have to download emulators and roms? Thanks!
is the emulators installed by default? just need to add games on the sd card?
I got the original pocket 3. Would love to see them make one with 5.5in screen or so. I think that would address readability and ergonomics, I struggle with the distance from bottom of the device to the analog sticks being too short
The official Retroid 3/3+ grip helps a lot with ergonomics, especially using the sticks. I couldn’t use my 3+ without the grip.
Retroid really has struck a niche no other company has right now. they strike an almost perfect balance of pricing, everything you can emulate and everything not emulation-wise (like by having just having a legit phone, you can do everything else).
There are obviously other devices that do specific things significantly better... But none of them have the balance of price. That's the thing. No matter what this little device does wrong, it doesn't sum up to the amount of amazing things it can do for such an incredible low price.
Looks pretty good and amazing review as always, does this support R3/L3 function?
yes
@@toycoma98 good to know, due to most ps and Xbox games use them and I would like to try remote play on it
Hey... For the @RetroidPocket .. Can it also be a good central media device to replace my Nvidia Shield with a dock?
Can you run Kagero Deception? Btw love the red😊
After watching 3 reviews of this device from 3 other YT channels I'm REALLY looking forward to A Linux version of this hardware, A $150 Anbernic or Powkiddy device must be right around the corner!
Great review of the RP 4 Pro... So uhh... Is anyone gonna review the RP 4 "regular non pro" version?
I want one. Don't need it, but may as well get it.
Add to my collection..
Does this have the game store thing we're you can connect to the internet through wifi and download roms directly to the SD card through the built in catalouge like the prior retroid pockets?
Can you test out Haunting Ground or Rule of Rose on PS2? Waiting for my pro to come in! Thank you kindly.
Will the key mapper automatically carry over to any connected Bluetooth controllers while in docked mode?
Finally, the Goldilocks Zone of handheld gaming based on size, price, and performance.
I like how the RP3+ was already really really good and even with heavier stuff it at least tries to defend itself as best as it can.
Then they announce this for literally almost the exact same price (only 30-ish more for the pro which is not a bad deal in the slightest).
Ordered a watermelon red 1,hope it plays all systems good, got one question, can i pre format the micro sd
and copy all games on my 1tb micro sd card?,and does it need fat32 or can i format in exfat?,also hope the system doesn't format the sdcard.
Man, it seems like exactly what i was looking for.
Am really interested in this one.
Have been waiting on a reasonably priced handheld that I can play my old ps2 games on.
Love that it can be connected to a bigger screen.
I know movies aren't the main focus, but can Google TV movies be downloaded to this device?
I live in an area with very poor internet and if I can also download movies so I can watch them off line later, that would be a huge bonus.
If you can do that on an android phone you can do it here.
@suhtangwong I've had problems in the past with an Android TV box that wouldn't let me download movies from Google Play where another one would allow it. Have also tried an Android emulator on my laptop that wouldn't allow it.
Where we are, you need satellite internet to be able to watch anything.
If the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro allows movie downloads from Google, then I'm set as I can download movies while at work.
My phone doesn't have the ability to connect to a TV, unfortunately.
Will this work for switch, ps3 roms & openbor? Does Genshin Impact overheat the handheld?
What is your wifi speeds for steam streaming? I have about 300mbs and run into stutters so don't wanna play things that require fast relfexes, limited to turn based games. 😢
Idk if it helps or it’s not accurate but I play Palworld through the Game Pass app and it’s pretty much very good. Sometimes I even forget I’m playing streaming.
Is this production unit or preproduction one? Do you still see any green tint?
I hope it arrives before the end of this month !
Does it come with games already on it or do we have to download the games to it because I want one
This just replaced the Odin lite with the same chip d900 but the pro version has a better cpu/gou and lighter. Still love my lite
I just ordered the odin light...
i think ill be investing in 1 of these i like my anbernics and miyoo mini but i want a high end handheld this year also have the r36s and anbernic RG351V coming later today.
@etaprime I have been searching for an affordable handheld that can play Smackdown: Here comes the pain for PS2. Any way you can test that out and let me know if it runs?
I'm still curious to see the price for the future Ayaneo android device that was announced. It'll be more around the price of an ayn odin at $299 starting though.
I would be interested to know how well LaunchBox works with this console. I just recently ordered one, and am waiting for it now to arrive =D
This comes with the invoice inside the box? Or they just email them?
Which is stronger, this or the qled pimax portal? My portal can play Genshin at 60 fps pretty well
Seems awesome. Might have to sell my RP3 and upgrade. The USB-C display output is especially nice.
I kind of wish that none of these handhelds had micro HDMI output and only had USB-C. Because if you need an adapter or dongle anyway, it might as well just be USB-C because everyone had one of those lying around. I suppose it might not just be as simple as putting a USB-C port that only supports video out (so no data or charging) though, perhaps that would require a more complex / expensive design internally.
I want to get it, but currently have the RP3+ and if I have the money for it I'll easily get this or save a bit more and get the Odin 2 Pro/Max
But still having fun with my RP3+ which is a good purchase for me back in Dec 2022
can you play special stages from gran turismo 3? Those scenarios are very demanding. Rome too. Cool console and review :D I have the 3+ and it's very good.
Is there a working microphone for ds games and 3ds? (I assume that's what that single hole is)
And also does it crash when using wifi calling apps like the Retroid Pocket 3+ ?
I bought a 3+ for my nephew for Christmas, and setting it up for him. It was his first android/mobile anything, and if the 4 pro could make a wifi call, It would be nice to know, but not a deal breaker.
I was setting up his 3+ with games and essential apps, and some communication apps to send messages to his parents, which is how I found out wifi call apps crash on the 3+
I did not know if this was because it's missing hardware, using a unisoc chip (Maybe Mediatek changes things), or if the Retroid team cut away bloatware to make the device strictly for gaming, or a combination of any. I just noticed that the 3+ did not have a camera, and the "dialer" app was nowhere to be found, which is surprising because in my android modding experience, disabling or removing the default dialer app sends the device into a crash-loop, so I took notice in the 3+ that the OS was stable despite missing a dialer.
Any news on the Miyoo Flip? It's taking forever 😭
The Dpad is my only caveat. Would be nice to have Genesis style DPad.
The ONLY thing I don’t like is the 4.7 inch screen if it was 6 I would buy it immediately
That's why I would choose the Odin2 over this , as good as it is. I need screen real estate of at least 6"
One of the reasons I also got a Odin 2. More power to play switch and the screen. For $100 more from base units I think it is well worth the money.
@@dplalowski I just bought a rog ally. I was also looking at the Odin because of the battery life but emulating ps3 was something I really wanted.
I have tinnitus, so a loud fan like that (at its max) is a no go for me. You think most of the games I can play with the fan on the minimum option?
Finally, I'm been waiting for 4 years for a $200 handheld that can play Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube!
+shipping= 300$ and there’s better options for that
which ones do you recommend to look at? I'm new to these handhelds@@mackdaddypeypey1
Mine didn't cost tax or shipping. $238 flat fee for the device, add on controller grips, and travel case.
@@B1GIRONMIKE for an extra 70$ you could’ve gotten an Odin 2 🫢
Can we connect a bluetooth controller to this to play local multiplayer? Also if another person has this can we play multiplayer on our own screens?
How is the button mapping for Geforce Now and Game Pass for android? Please add for the next video!
I’m so tempted to get this for genshin lol
Have had my pocket 2 for a long time thinking it might be a good time to upgrade
Emulator platforms and games are pre installed?
Does this need some setup? Or plug and play?
cant wait for my Crystal Clear Version to arrive
I don’t understand why reviewers keep comparing it to the Odin 2? They all mention the fact that Odin is more powerful but cost more, as if that is the only difference.
For me the size of the Odin is the real deal breaker. While it does play NS somewhat reasonably, it comes with the price of almost DOUBLE the weight of the RP4 pro. As someone who chose regular IPhone over the pro version because of 45g weight difference, I find it weird that no one mentions that the Odin weight almost half kg, which is not usable in many scenarios like bed time play.
And if you go that route of mentioning the price tag, then why won’t you go directly for the steam deck? The LCD version is only 420€(nice), while the Odin pro(the base version is not available) costs 370€ before shipping. You get more performance and you are already in the realm of un pocketable devices with the Odin, which makes it a bad choice in my eyes.
RP4 is not for everyone, but Odin is just a poor middle ground.
.... A Question .... Can i use my powkiddy rgb30 games sd card with this device ?.
do you think it could play devil may cry the ps2 games?
How, exactly, is the Odin 2 hard to get a hold of?
@ETAPRIME how do the analog sticks being both at the bottom feel?
Feels good, same as rp flip
Just wanted to know about those streaming games can you use it on other consoles ( Playstation, xbox)?
You need the "PS remote play" app for Sony and I forget what it is for MS but there is one for that too.
@@TheRealAlpha2 so that means forget playstation portal, buy this instead. 😁
Can you try Sw Rogue Squadron 1,2, and 3 ?
I really would like to see it run Metal Gear solid if you could. I ordered the RP4pro and just trying to get as much info as possible.
Very cool but already got the Odin2. Although I prefer the dpad location here better for retro gameing plus this is much more portable.
Odin 2 pro is what I have. It’s endgame hardware though. Most aren’t gonna want to pay 400$ for a emulation handheld. Even though it doesn’t get better. I love this damn thing!
What is that rad wall paper you use?
I hope some day we can get something like this but running a Linux distro that's not Android. Having Android as OS makes me consider these like smartphones with physical inputs rather than emulation consoles. Sadly, it doesn't seem there are PS2 and Vita emulators that are up to the task in non-x86 Linux yet.
Agreed--it's impressive price-to-performance, but for me and I'd presume many others, there's a lot of value in the feeling of a unified, neat system that feels like it was designed for purpose. A unified front-end like the Linux distros and EmulationStation setups we've seen from Anbernic et al. is really important to me, and is the reason that when I bought my dad a retro gaming handheld, I went for an Anbernic that's nowhere near as powerful as something that can be had for not much more money; I wanted him to have something that felt like a purpose-built console, not a clunky, piecemeal-designed phone operating system shoehorned into a game controller. The experience is the thing you're paying for as much as the technology powering it, and until there's something for PS2/ GC as streamlined as SteamOS for this money, I'm not really interested!
Can we Use 2 seperate bluetooth controllers when playing Street fighter?
Are the ergonomics better than a switch or switch lite?
Make a comparison video between this and the 2S!!! Is it worth twice the price? We need to know!!!!!!!!!!
wait, the antutu retroid pocket 3+ has version 9 though? cant you just install version 9 on retroid pocket 4 pro as well? I know RP4 pro will still be powerful but it wont show that much numbers in version 9
what about the brightness? Another reviewer mentioned it's less dimmer than the pocket 3 :(
Could this play wii or switch games? Also, is the screen a touch screen?
It can play very few titles but it does work. I'm guessing you're new to portable emulators? Yes touch screen.
Can you please show it running Godgand and Okami on PS2 emulation? Thanks.
