    Note: The black LCD Deck and the Gundam Deck are both on Steam OS 3.5 in this video.
    Friendly reminder that this existing doesn't invalidate a purchase that you've made on an original SD, or other current-gen Windows handheld.

      While it was just an evolved PSP the few extra barriers the Vita felt like the birth of the modern handheld. It was just very well balanced spec-wise and so smartly designed, especially for the price.
      If I could change any part of gaming history, I think I'd retroactively make the DS and 3DS more basic/sensible like the PSP. I love so much software on those devices but I didn't enjoy Nintendo's gimmick heavy focus of that era.

    I liked your bit at the end where you reassured a lot of people that this device will be relevant even in the near future and that they shouldn't be in a FOMO-state. You can always stream to this device and it will still stay relevant that way.

    • @Whatsup_Abroad
      @Whatsup_Abroad ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What does relevant mean? People use this phrase but I’m certain they don’t know what it means. This is a toy. It plays hundreds of thousands of games. It will do that 50 years from now too.

    • @PantsaBear
      @PantsaBear ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Whatsup_AbroadYou're taking what they said way too literally
      The portable gaming handheld market has been in this flux the past 2 years where "can't miss" features have been added every couple months, but they're not perfect so they get "outclassed" by another device with a few different features or slightly better performance. The whole appeal is to get the newest best performing thing
      This Steam Deck OLED doesn't really try to feed that cycle of FOMO. Its a Steam Deck that has every single convenience feature one could want, now has a full sized OLED display that none of these devices 2x-3x the price have, and isn't trying to have the best performance in the market to compromise its other components. In 5 years, there will be no device "better" than this in any way except for performance (and maybe VRR, but I digress). This will still play games at an exceptionally high level of visual splender because of the screen. It will have an extremely long life of popular relevance because of that
      I can also anecdotally say the same for myself and the Switch OLED. There is rumor that the new Switch, will be much more powerful, but ditch the OLED screen. For that reason, even if its backwards compatibile, I dont see myself selling my Switch OLED to upgrade right away like I did moving on from my launch Switch or Wii U. Ill either upgrade after a couple years of Switch 2 or Ill own Switch OLED and Switch 2 simultaneously.

    • @jeffmenace91
      @jeffmenace91 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Whatsup_AbroadIt just simply means it will be talked about and praised for years to come but yeah that last bit probably doesn't make sense to use the word relevant. I wouldn't call this a toy because it's more of a machine that plays hundreds of thousands of games.

    • @Phoenix_1991
      @Phoenix_1991 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Whatsup_Abroad it's not a toy, it's being used as one maybe. But I had the previous one and used the steam os desktop mode to replace my PC on which you can do lots of things beside gaming. So as the other commenter said, it's a machine that can do entertainment. As for the relevant part. It won't suddenly become obsolete in a year or two so I think the word relevant is appropriate. I feel this 3 year refresh is an important statement on how committed they are to the platform, we know what Valve time is like, and even for this, i think most was not expecting some sort of "OLED deck" with the crazy amount of refinements it has in just basically 2 years?, many would be happy with just an oled screen.
    I still believe that 2026 is the ideal time for when a new APU and 32GB ram combo would appear, and i feel the goal is to get as much as possible out of 20w ideally, not to say you cant force it to draw more power, just seems to be the ideal scenario for this system.
    Im here for the battery, I dont over use my deck i often keep it at 15w, to me knowing i can push it if i wish, this will give me longer playtime, AND better performance with how refined they made... everything.

    I remember thephawks saying that the reason the deck can perform so well at low TDPs compared to other habdhelds is because the TDP using doesn't truly stay locked. It fluctuates up and down as needed. Maybe the OLED is so efficient that it doesn't have to do that anymore. With would explain the lower performance on lower TDPs and less power draw

    But it IS a performance upgrade because things like screen quality can be quantified and performance can be measured. Better color reproduction, better contrast ratio, brighter, etc. Those are all measurements that show visual performance. Also the battery performance is much higher.
    FPS isn't the only measurement of performance. If that's all someone cares about they can keep their old Deck, but for people who understand overall performance, this is absolutely a big jump and well worth it.

  • @TheSixthSLoT
    @TheSixthSLoT ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I want to like this, simply because I love OLED so much, but I owned a Steam Deck before, and my biggest mark against it was the incompatibility with games outside of Steams ecosystem. I have a sizable GOG library, and on my OG Steam Deck, next to none of them ever ran (yes I tried them using Heroic). At first, I thought it might have been the games themselves being broken, but when I tested out a few identical games that I owned on both Steam and GOG, the Steam versions just up and ran while the GOG versions did not. As someone who owns several hundreds of GOG games, this was a major turn off to me.
    I think the Steam Deck is cool for two types of people
    1) Anyone who buys over 90% of their games on Steam, which should be a large number of people.
    2) Anyone coming from console that wants an easy transition into the PC world. The Steam Deck consolized the experience.
    If you're like me, and you have diverse tastes in which launchers you buy your games from, this is not it. Before I spent my hard earned money, I went inquiring online about the Decks compatibility with other launchers, and so many people from the Steam Deck community lied, saying that it's stupidly easy to run games from third party launchers. It's not. It wasn't until the release of the ROG Ally that people started being more vocal about finally having a PC handheld that can run everything, thus validating my poor experience with the Steam Deck in that regard. The Steam Deck community led me astray simply because it's full of so many toxic fanboys who will say anything to anyone in order to justify *TO THEMSELVES* that they made the best purchasing choice. Don't buy into it. The Steam Deck isn't a bad device, especially with all it's newer upgrades, but if you own tons of games on other launchers, don't count out your other options, and further, don't be fooled by the Steam Deck community. When you ask for information online, make sure you're asking a consumer, *NOT* a fanboy.

    • @YourPalHDee
      @YourPalHDee ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Mine runs all Uplay games totally fine, but I really don't think you should've got the deck expecting it to run stuff outside of Steam consistently well. They never promised anything like that.
      You basing your opinion presumably off of insecure dipshits on Reddit, is really your problem and not Valve's. Best of luck with whatever alternative you find.

    • @TheSixthSLoT
      @TheSixthSLoT ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@YourPalHDee Being that Valve never openly stated that the Steam Deck has poor compatibility with third party launchers, no one will inherently know that information on their own. I see that as a lack of transparency on Valves behalf. When the company themselves don’t provide that kind of information, all the consumer can really do is ask around online. I don’t see that being on the consumer. I see that as a failure on Valves behalf.
      Thanks btw, but I do have something already. After my OG Deck sold on eBay, I bought the ROG Ally. It’s not OLED, but 108% sRGB color accuracy is pretty damn nice regardless, and best of all, it runs everything no matter what launcher I use. It even runs the anti cheat games that the Deck struggled with, even though they are native to Steam’s store.

      Well it is possible to play games from other launchers, but it is not necessarily always easy and plenty can go wrong. But it is wasted potential to buy a Steam Deck if you intend to play games from mostly other stores, because then you are missing out on a lot of Steam specific features (like shader caches etc..). But if other stores is really so important, you could install Windows on it and it becomes just like any generic handheld.

      I only tried around 12 games from my GOG library from heroic launcher and most of them work without much effort, a few require checking on protondb to fully function (FMVs etc) but that's it.

    I use vibrantDeck mod to fix the screen color pop on the original steam deck. I would probably upgrade if I think I need it.

    They should sell the bigger OLED display for current deck users to replace. Don’t care about the battery, internals, case etc. don’t want to invest 600$ for a hardware upgrade that might not even fix the current bugs

      The new OLED display is not backwards compatible with LCD steam decks. It takes up less space which allowed some of the major improvements.

    The free case and accessories alone make this handheld the best of any as all the others don’t come with a case

    It would be great to cover the data transfer from an original Steam Deck to the Oled one. I personally have spent a lot of time configuring emulators and the emulated games. So i would like a completely lossless process. Thanks in advance

    People keep calling a damn OLED screen a massive upgrade. Yes it's brighter, 7% faster and more battery life. The chip is the same damn chip.

    • @RedstoneBros
      @RedstoneBros ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i think that if you have eyes that can see, OLED is a massive upgrade from LCD. especially in this case, because the steam deck's screen is particularly awful.

    • @danteneal5561
      @danteneal5561 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well technically it's a smaller version of that chip at 6nm which improves battery life and has better low tdp than the other apu's rn, this is just a refresh

    • @TakiUdon

      I am not referring to the screen as the reason why this is a massive upgrade.

    Don't know if anybody has mentioned this in the comments yet and I know I'm late but the Phawx did a great video on the TDP thing, it has to do with how tdp is handled differently on the models and kind of a misleading measurement for effeciency at times.
