I think you were being too fussy but I understand why. You buy cars with the ultimate intention of driving the car as your own for a period while having one eye on selling the car as stock. Porsche advertised the car at a keen price and offered to fund remedial work to satisfy you. You on the other hand have chosen to publicly blacklist the car and make it difficult for Porsche to sell it. They will not forget. Good luck with your search.

Being fussy about an £87k used car I don’t think is worth unreasonable. But this isn’t being fussy - being fussy is worrying about the scratches on both sill cover just beneath where you can see without looking, or the hard use it’s had that you can never delete from TH-cam. Who’s made this car hard to sell? Me or Porsche for painting it 2 different colours and lending it out for hard use as a promotional vehicle for the brand?

They are Porsche, they are over it, also I don’t think this is being fussy, spending the best part of 90k on a car, I would expect the paint to match!

Morning Andrew. I've had a friend look at the PPN report and you are right, it shows a new clutch being done at 3800 miles, 2 new windscreens, 2 new front lips, 2 rear diffusers, seat bolster repair, alloy wheel repair to name a few. It was used at Goodwood, by TopGear and numerous reviewers plus it was used by Emma Raducanu for a spell. No notes on a full front respray but, as you say, the tell tales are obvious enough to be 99% certain. I think maybe a bullet well dodged. I would have also insisted an over rev report especially on a manual car. Lots of nice GT4s out there and I would most definitely stick with the Porsche approved network. It's a shame that the Reading demos get a hard life but I suppose that's what they're there for.

Morning Dan, thanks for the valuable intel. With regards to over revs and front end respray, the pre-sale prep report from Reading stated no over revs which I was surprised about as in this Top Gear video it's bouncing off the rev limiter th-cam.com/video/7Si8DaRQ7io/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Kg5kAUY5C97rV_wz&t=637. I know this isn't a damaging over rev considering money shift potential with a manual, but it's all you can do with a PDK and it still gets recorded. The prep report also stated front end paintwork but as you say you don't need a report to confirm that. I'm still looking but I'm less convinced now by the extra £6k-£10k Porsche Centres charge, after all the warranty can be purchased separately and a good low miler won't need any refurb.

That Porsche is so far out it’s unbelievable !
So many variables in matching colours !
There can be more than one shade !
The paint can be produced by different company companies !

Clear lacquer can also have yellow tint to it !

There is a way round the colour issue… obviously the doors will need doing and the way I do it is too paint half the door and use blending/fade out thinner over the lacquer edge and then polish the edge back…. A bit of meticulous prep and it works all the time.

Every time I deal with West London I am reminded why I have stayed with Swindon for 15 years…. Not all OPCs are the same and in recent years the pressure to sell seems to have changed their sales practices. Avoid all the London OPCs and avoid anyone who uses pressure sales to sell a Porsche. I agreed to buy a GT3 from Chester last year who then sold it from under me and didn’t tell me…. Don’t be put off using an OPC, but demand good service. If you don’t get it, walk away.

Why would anyone deal with a used car seller that lies and cheats. This probably applies to every brand. You need to understand that Porsche is no better than Dacia in terms of what they do to shift metal. There is too much snobbery at Porsche - do ask the salesman if being employed by the Volkswagen Group was his dream at school.

I bought a 1 owner 24k mile 987 Cayman 3.4S but before purchase went over the car with a fine toothcomb. The paintwork was absolutely flawless in every way. This was a £19k 13 year old car.
To spend £87k on a car youred expect it to be perfect or as near as. Every used car will have signs of use and maybe some paintwork done but in this case whoever painted this car needs an eyetest.
Frozen Berry is a very rare colour and made in small batches. The colour would have had to be specially matched by a spectrometer which any good paint factor could have done.
This car needs the whole front end repainting or even possibly the whole car. Unbeliveable that a OPC thought it an acceptable job. Ive been selling cars for 22 years and wouldnt have a Astra for £5k on the forecout with a paint mismatch like this let alone a car 20times the price!
Seeing the car on a track and thrashed to within an inch of its life, needing a new clutch at 8k miles would also be a no no for me.
This car has rightly now been marked as a nail and likely will be extremely hard to sell. Id put its value at no more than £50K as its an auction car in reality.
You really dodged a bullet with this car.👍😮

Many BMWs are registered with the number plates starting with Y. This is because of the BMW Import Centre based just outside of Doncaster. Doesn’t always mean that it’s been trashed on track or has been part of the press fleet but may have been an ex-demo or have been a company car.

Pretty much every Y BMW and MINI will be ex-BMW fleet, both my and my neighbour’s MINIs are. As I mentioned in another comment, there are usually clues on the build sheet of those to anything out of the ordinary - I forget the numbers off the top of my head, however there is one for “management” cars, which are normally those either used by HO or in the case of new models used to demonstrate them to the dealers prior to the launch, or press cars, which have their own code (S900 or something in that region) to identify them.

    • @bigjml
      @bigjml 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I registered cars from Mercedes are as likely to be ex Lease as they are the Press Fleet or exHire Cars as all cars registered to MBFS have a “K”
The way to tell is check the PDi certificate inside the service book as it will have the first keeper details even if the car was registered to MBFS
Cars from BMW with the Y could indeed be Press Fleet or Hire Cars but they could also be ex BMW UK Management cars

I think you've missed something important here. The car is retailing over 10k less than equivalent cars. The car needs a respray which would cost around 8k at a Porsche approved centre. If you don't mind it's been a press car then I'd buy the car, get the respray and fix the niggles under warranty. You're not going to find a car over 10k below retail without caveats. Its 10k under for a reason.

The sad part is this, i personally don't want ever to buy a new or second hand car from a dealer ever 😢 i got similar experiences with new cars and found out horror stories from others in my home country 😢
Before pandemic a guy from Germany 🇩🇪 bought a new 911 that head a lot of issues and Porsche refused to service it under the warranty, the whole car was manufacturing defect ,that happen more often that we think about including expensive cars ( 200.000€ new BMW 7 series years ago where the owner burned 🔥 the car in front of BMW museum in Germany 🇩🇪 because they refused to service it, a new Lamborghini Huracan in China 🇨🇳) but this guy with his Porsche911 made a TH-cam channel because of this and got famous over night exposing Porsche, after 6 months and milions off views Porsche bought the car back 😢

Regarding the paint, I can imagine it would be a bloody nightmare trying to match that colour. I remember going to look at a Pearlescent white Audi S2 back in the day, and the touch-ups to the paint stood out like a sore thumb. It wasn't just white with mica in it, it had a few tones going on. So god knows how hard it is to match the colour of the porker [not that I like it I'm afraid, the colour that is]

Bearing in mind how much money I was prepared to part with I was a little surprised when I heard absolutely nothing after the test drives. In fact they just closed my enquiry file with no action.
I was then contacted 3 or 4 months later asking me if a new salesperson can help as the other person had left and yes they’d done absolutely zero with my ask.

My friend bought the excuses that metallic colours cannot be properly matched - I've owned enough metallic cars over the decades (including currently two metallic Porsches) to know this is absolutely not the case. Used cars are used cars. They aren't going to repaint it or resolve any issues. They just want it sold. Useful to know that even porsche don't care about their own strict quality criteria for approved used cars. A used and abused car is a used car at any price.

You can always have some frozen berries for your pudding to make up for this! On a serious note, I work next to a Porsche dealer and look at their stock most days. Do you think it would be possible to buy a used cayman, keep it for a year and sell it on without losing too much money?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I don't think I can look at frozen berries ever again! If you buy from Porsche as an approved used car you get 2 years warranty, so after 1 year you can pass the balance on to next owner if you sell privately. But you'll still never get back anything like what you paid because Porsche main dealers charge a good chunk more than everyone else for that peace of mind. Only way to beat the system is buy privately at well below dealer retail and be lucky without a warranty. Or car prices go up which is a rare phenomenon and we are unlikely to see a repeat of what we had in 2021/2022 for a long time. Porsches sub £50k generally hold their price well though

2 things meant I was OK with press use a) it's a GT car so should be tough b) apparently they go through a comprehensive refurb process. What I later discovered (and the fact the paint was crap was lucky because I had a good excuse to walk) was that yes the GT cars are tough but they are designed for track use and racing, not drifting with loads of smoke coming off tyres and not repeated launches to measure 0-62 times. Racing car drivers are smooth as it's faster and easier on the hardware. With regards to refurb, yes they spent a good chunk on it cosmetically but it's the bits you can't see that are excessively worn as you say and while there is a warrantyt you can bet they will fail out of warranty or be deemed wear and tear items. Never again

I had a very similar experience with Porsche Edinburgh last week, albeit on a Cayman S. Similar to you the price and spec caught my eye, looking at the spec I did think track car but not Porsche GB owned. I was firstly told by the sales manager that "it had never been near a track", following getting the figures I was happy with I asked for this in writing as like yourself I had to travel some distance to see the car. I was then told the first owner was Porsche GB and it had been a press car, and used at the Silverstone Porsche experience centre. Needless to say I was not happy and I walked away from the car, I actually noticed today it has now been sold. I wonder if they have been honest with the person who did buy it. It is a shady practice none the less but if you know you know. Nobody should be buying a car without any checks or due diligence whatsoever.
Plus at that 40-80k range cars of prominent marquis like Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc aren’t going to be immaculate especially if it’s retail was over 100k+ new so expect it’s going to need money putting into it.
For example a GT4 retails at around £102k but you are looking at a 77k one it’s right at the lowest price point for a GT4. Look at the market let’s be real if it was £90k and it was mismatched paint and a dodgy gearbox I’d complain, nobody here is looking at this subjectively and with a pinch of salt.
The buyer got hurt it wasn’t a bargain and if it was 77k and a perfect car it would be long sold by weeks end of being on sale.
I’d have shrewdly negotiated a really lowball offer sorted the clutch and lived with the paintwork for a while until I could sort it or wrap it.

Being an ex press car absolutely should put you off. You'd be utterly incensed if you witnessed anyone treating your own car as press cars get treated. Moreover, unless Porsche swapped out the engine and gearbox, the checks and maintenance are irrelevant. How are they going to check for premature engine wear due to being ragged from cold by an idiot? They're not. Like I said, unless it's got a fresh engine and gearbox, then it's got an engine and gearbox that has been mistreated by a load of talentless idiots (not all the 'media' are like that, but plenty are). There are loads of other components that will be more knackered than usual and won't have been changed out and will be more likely to give problems in future. Anyone who has seen how press cars are treated would not buy one. And if you're surprised it went straight back up for sale, afraid you are rather naive. Standards at OPCs are not particularly high. Someone will happily buy that car and only realise their mistake when they come to sell it. The dealer knows all of this and couldn't give the slightest shit.
