Planking the bottom of our Diesel Duck 41, Maryland style planking! SDP Ep. 74

  • Bottom planking, Maryland style, getting the bottom closed in. I know it's been a while, my focus was needed elsewhere, but we'll never quit building our dream boat!
    This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
    The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
    His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
    George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
    Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.
    Our goal is to be next!

    Love Beuhler's designs. That boat is exactly what I would want to build and do the loop in. I've built some rowboats, dories, and got a good start on Stambaugh's Red Wing before the big C did a number on me. Congratulations on the whole beautiful effort.

    Just found your write up earlier. I have always wanted to build a sailboat but have been looking at trawlers and tugs lately. Enjoy the journey. I will be following your progress.
    On a side note, please don't lean over the table saw blade or reach over it. I am a contractor and do risky things but try to come out of this with all of your digits and limbs in tact.

    those launches are pretty spectacular. was passing through that area (Titusville?) on an extended bicycling tour back the spring of '96 and watched the launch space shuttle Atlantis. it was at night, between 3:00 and 4:00 A.M. and even from route 1 on the coast it was bright and very loud.

    This style of bottom planking just seems so wrong to me. I know it's been done for years this way. Salt and Tar did theirs like this but to my way of thinking, if you, God forbid run her across the rocks length wise planks would just slid along where as this looks like more chances of the rock digging in and tearing off a plank with disastrous results. Long planks have more fasteners in them so they'd be harder to rip off. Just my thoughts though. Looking good Scott. Hope all in your family are well now.

  • @skaraborgcraft
    @skaraborgcraft 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that bottom going to be sheathed in ply and glass also? Just wondering as you didnt mention anything about caulking seams and you was cranking the planks tight with clamps.

    Love this build, i get excited everytime you upload a video. My only criticism is you should have turned off the saw before taking the plank off the sled, you may be skilled and not worry about yourself in that situation but you are by virtue of posting on here encouraging less skilled people with not so good habits

    not sure wearing gloves while using a table saw is safe

  • @MrBryantdavis

    I worked in a cabinet shop putting myself through college. When using the table saw, my boss required me to not raise the saw blade up any more than absolutely necessary to minimize the damage done in the event of an accident. We had a guy who worked there who cut off his pinky and ring finger with a table saw. I like your videos, but you scare me working around a running table saw blade.
