- Using scarf joints to make short lumber into long curving structural beams, we complete the remainder of our forward deck beams in one episode, Amazing. All straight forward woodworking that turns over 150 board feet of rough, cypress lumber from recycled and salvaged commercial pickle barrels, with the use of our stationary machinery, router and lots of sanding.
This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.

You sure gave us a lesson in pickle barrels,,,,
That timber will most probably be the highlight of the boat . And so it should be , the tannins and colours go from very light through a brown orange to a dark charcoal . They will look magnificent, no doubt about it, sure was worth the extra effort to achieve those results .

I love a good jig, but yours was sketchy at best.
And why isn’t you’re out feed table the same height as you’re saw? Just makes that last few inches that much harder.

I know it seems like a long time between episodes, but if you consider the amount of setup and editing he must have to do for each of these episodes, that alone is a fulltime job. He puts in so many different camera angles and specialty shots like the panning time lapses, and they all add time to the editing, and take away from the boat building. The reason his videos are so compelling to watch is the amount of effort he puts into the filming, and editing. Next time you watch one of them, try to count how many times he cuts from one camera to another.

Scott, beams look great. It appears you screwed the laminations every foot or so and I just wondered why? The glue joints are typically stronger than the wood grain itself and I would have thought the screw holes would make the beams more prone to splitting along the grain between the holes, although I guess the laminations would work against that.

An interesting way to do the scarf joint Scott. Watching Acorn to Arabella and Tally Ho, they both made a jig that required a router to prepare the scarf.
The way Scott did it only works for boards up to 2 1/2" - 3" wide. Acorn to Arabella and Tally Ho were scarfing boards 6" - 12" wide!

A best practice pointer. When sanding with a flat palm/fingers, best to have fingers perpendicular to the grain. Parrallel to grain can leave slightest of depressions in wood that may show up later
2:46 - An acquaintance decked his boat with teak from scrapped WWII battle ships. Each plank was drilled, co-bored and fastened on the centerline, but both 'sides' (after cutting the center parts out) gave him cheap teak deck planking.
7:55 - Hell of a lot quicker than Acorn's router jig.

Scott, those beams with that beading just put Henry Red into the 'classic yacht finish' category. They don't do that much anymore on any boats of wood, glass or metal. Very nice work and as you said you'll be able to sit in the forward cabin and admire them a lot. Take care, stay cool and forge on.
I love your videos and I have been following since day one. I have one question and it's not about the boat. I noticed that it appears all of your wood shop tools are Grizzly. Are you happy with the Grizzly equipment? I almost forgot, I use wax paper on my table surfaces to keep glue cleanup a breeze.

The edge routing on the beams looks nice. There’s still a sharp 90 degree corner on the bottom though, right? If (when) someone whacks their head, I would think a simple round over would be the least likely to break the skin.
Also, the pre-finish looks great and will help to stabilize the wood during construction. If there’s going to be a significant delay before their final join to deck and hull, have you sealed the top and ends? If not, those surfaces are free to absorb atmospheric moisture while the sides and bottom are not. This could lead to warping.

Scott, why is the height of your out-feed table so much lower than the height of your table saw? It looks like you’re working real hard to keep the work down on the table saw and it could be throwing off the accuracy of your cut.
I used to have one the same height. It’s a constant battle to keep them level. I found it easier to have the out feed lower. It’s not perfect, but it’s much better than having a board raise up while ripping it.
Please, don’t blow the sawdust away! use a vacuumcleaner, beter for your longs and keeps your workspace clean 😉

TB pva glue is not rated for structural use so how can it be a considered a structural beam?

I truly enjoyed this edition. Educational and fun at the same time. When watching the table saw cutting early into the video I began to wonder what your monthly electrical bill is. Is the shop on a separate meter from the home? I know it's actually none of my business but I'm curious if you track the electric bill and factor it into the overall build cost.
I do envy the fun you have thinking through the project.
