Diesel Duck wooden boat, building the raised sheer and good old fashioned woodworking. SDP #63

  • First layer of planking on the port side, aft portion of the boat complete, including the raised sheer line. I also do some old fashion woodworking to fabricate the front support base for our epoxy, fiberglass diesel tanks.
    This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
    The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
    His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
    George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
    Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.

    Nice work Scott. If the frame out of plumb and the deck beams needing to be adjusted are your biggest issues then you have done a marvelous job for an amateur boat builder. The oak with the brown preservative looks like the fumed finish on Craftsman era oak furniture. The project is looking really good and the videography is getting better with every episode. Take care, stay well and Happy Holidays.

    I admire guys & ladies that can work in the cold with snow flurries or where you can see your breath inside the shop. I live in a very moderate temperature zone and I turn on the heater in my shop when its 60 F or lower.

    I love the boat. And watching it be built. I am worried the amount of screws getting impulse driven will undermine its strength. Why not drive a dowel coated in epoxy? Cheaper, wouldn't compress and fracture the wood on entry and won't rust in the future. My 2 cents and will continue watching as i love what people can create in the back yard. Not being an ass i hope. Merry Christmas to all

  • @paulbriggs3072

    West System recommends against putting epoxy over larger dimensioned oak as it expands 50% more than mahogany and opens joints and checks regardless if epoxy is attempting to restrain it, thus letting water in. Read Epoxyworks article called using 'Epoxy With Oak'. P.S. That is a lot of edge setting I see with that oak planking...

    Lots of hard work 👍
    ? ? ? Are/will you be adding large anti-roll bilge keels, or paravanes ?
    In Hawai'i @ Kewalo Boat Harbour, I saw the same vessel outfitted with paravanes .

  • @miketabback2635

    I really do enjoy your videos and I give you credit for your perseverance but you better rase the out- feed table on your table saw or you may not finish the boat with the same amount of parts as you started with. Other then that nice job and enjoy the process.

    Hi Scott, a few questions: First, what brand is your tape measure? Second, will you be fairing the planks before the ply goes on? And third, will you be coating the planks with epoxy? Tar? Something else? Keep up the good work!

    • @SixPointsWoodWorks
      @SixPointsWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a Lufkin tape and Milwaukee. The planks will be faired only as much as required to get the plywood to lay flat against it.

  • @stephanemiliani8875

    I saw a similar vessel in Hawai'i @Kewalo Boat Harbor with paravanes. Are you thinking of this to help stop the roll, or large bilge keels?

    • @SixPointsWoodWorks
      @SixPointsWoodWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      we will have a small sailing rig to slow the roll and will also act as an emergency get home rig. I may use paravanes if we really getting into open water cruising.
