  • More Maryland style bottom planking and one little trick of the trade for this type of planking.
    This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
    The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
    His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
    George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
    Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.
    Our goal is to be next!

    when I first saw the design of this boat I thought the chine would be too weak of a design but now that I see it come together looks as though it going go be fine! Looks like it will be nice and strong by the time its all fitted together.

    I'm impressed by your high quality work. It's too bad you don't have some help on things like the planking. And I marvel at all that clear grain lumber. It must cost a fortune.

    Could you taper back maybe every other board a certain amount to keep it in line? Awsome video, would love to spend a week just watching and learning in person!

      He could, but it's less work just to slap up a bunch of planks and make an adjustment when the differences gets big enough. And even more so if it ends up getting sheathed in plywood.

    The boat is looking good. Personally, I prefer sailboats but I subscribed to your channel because it's a George Buehler design. You'll be making the great loop in no time. I don't know but I've been told that green antifreeze is essentially the same thing as wood preservative.

    That bottom looks fantastic Scott. Good to see you back. Too bad you couldn't find a pickle vat with the right curve and length of stave to use for the bottom planking to save time. Are you going to sheet the bottom with plywood and glass like the topsides? Thank you for the update. Best wishes for a great week ahead.

    After watching today's edition I've got one question. Why in the name of little Green apples did you build your boathouse so far from your shop? My heavens you've put miles an hours just walking back and forth.

    This form of hull planking is termed “Deadrise” it is neither Maryland nor Virginia, it’s been used in the Chesapeake Bay for centuries by most DelMarVa watermen….

    I am surprised a prominent builder/designer like George Buhler cam up with this costly, time consuming construction method. Nice wood working by Scott.

    i really enjoy this channel but like the channels, life on the hulls or acorn to arabella it will never be finished. hes been planking the bottom for 5 months now and less than half way through.

    • @dnomyarnostaw
      @dnomyarnostaw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Huh? Arabella has finished the planking.

    • @errolseager1292
      @errolseager1292 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are going to be proven wrong, some projects progress faster because there is additional help and near full time work on them, this project is a one man operation and done in his spare time, sometimes the build isn't about getting to the water as fast as possible, it is more about actually crafting the vessel, if you wanted a fast build you would buy a ready built vessel

    • @dnomyarnostaw
      @dnomyarnostaw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@errolseager1292 True. And if you wanted a fast self built vessel, you wouldn't do endless video recording and editing, and fundraising. Totally different process.

    • @jonny-b4954
      @jonny-b4954 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acorn of Arabella not being finished? Say what? They're plowing through and have been non-stop for like 3 years. And are progressing every week...? I'm still not convinced in this ship's design but will likely be proved wrong.

    • @MegaBait1616
      @MegaBait1616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think in years they will be finished as the YT Money comes in..... This channel is plugging along but those sailboats seem to now put the best of the best into their boats... They have Now made Shows of E-Begging and will drag out building the blow boats for years to come for Money...... be well.
