At long last I get started on bottom planking. I'm using a relatively unique technique, called Maryland style planking that is an option on hard chined boats like our Diesel Duck. I also share a side project that will turn our messy basement into a functional home office.
This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.

Damn, you are one workin' dude. I hope you get some offers to visit some boats while you and your wife vacation away from nasty Rachacha area weather (I live in Fairport). I enjoy your videos and marvel at your skill level. Whew, I need a nap!

Good progress on both the boat and your new office. Don't forget to frame in for a vent fan in the office. It's always good to have tasks that don't require glue ups when it gets cold. Have a good time in Florida, take care and stay well.

I don't know, I don't think I have ever had just one DIY project going on lol. I mean I need to think about more than
one ongoing project, it helps when I return to a project. Gives time for supply's to arrive before the next work session on
a project. Let's me do research on different things during down time and much more efficient when I return to them. Good to see you again.

I think you forgot to put it nail plates where the wires go through the studs. They will save you from screwing/nailing through a wire when putting up drywall or anything else the screws/nails to those studs.

Nice work sir. My wife and I live just north of Orlando. We go the New Smyrna beach several times a year. It's a nice little town. Cold in Florida right now though. I mean for Florida and windy. Getting close to freezing at night.

Check the Salt and Tar channel as their boat is also a Bueler design with similar bottom planking.

Don’t do it quick. Do it right. There is nothing so galling as looking at your mistakes every day. 🤓 Yes, several projects going on here. I thought I was the only one. 😁

don’t ya hate it when people point out errors? Sorry to be that guy. Easy fix though. Your staples with more than three cables out of the switch box isn’t allowed. You can staple up to two NM cables, but three or more require something like a wire stacker. Easy to fix, and it’s code, and will save your wires from drywall screws. Cheers. (Master electrician, commercial inspector).
