  • For those shoppers who aren’t looking to spend a lot of money on some hand turned items at the craft fair, it’s always good to have some lower priced items that might grab their attention.
In today’s video I’ll turn a few pen blanks into pocket boxes which is a quick and easy beginners project for woodturners. It’s a low-priced item that sells well at craft markets.
If all of you woodturners are like me, you’ve probably stock piled hundreds of pen blanks. This is a good way to use some of them if you’re tired of making pens and finials.
I begin by securing the blank in the chuck and marking out the top, bottom and where I plan to cut the piece in two. It’s then drilled with forstner bits, and a tenon shaped to fit the lid. You can design any exterior shape.

My compliments on knowing how to use lathe tools. It seems that every video on TH-cam shows someone using a bowl gouge for everything. When you brought out that skew chisel, you made us old turners proud!

Haha, thanks! My first turning was a pen with my local club and they steered me in the direction of traditional tools over carbides. I'm definitely not a skew master but I took a class with Alan Lacer years ago.

Thanks Paully! It's pretty simple but at times you can end up with the two pieces being a bit off center from one another so making one that is meant to be completely flush can be difficult.

Hi Judith, I'm glad you like them. I usually sell them for about $20 a piece so for 3 I'd give a bit of a discount and do $50 plus whatever shipping is. If you'd like to talk more you can email me at hodgepodgeww@gmail.com
I can then get more specifics if you want and you can pick which woods you'd like or let me know how long it needs to be to fit these needles.

The piece sure looks good. What would be the price?
My experience with selling things is that the environment determines what you can ask for something.
Also: It will never be worth your time in real money, unless the environment is right.
