Woodturning - Best FOG Wood Ever!

  • In this week’s woodturning video, Harry and I and the local community experienced a pretty crazy thunderstorm a few weeks back that had some very high winds.
Later that day after the storms had passed Harry suggested we head out as good Samaritans and help cut up downed trees. I knew immediately Harry just wanted to go get some fresh snacks.
As we drove around the neighborhood, we picked up some oak, magnolia, a large chunk of pine, and other various unknown woods. I decided to drive through a newer subdivision thinking they might have some interesting ornamental trees. As I was passing by houses I spotted a brush pile ahead…..the wood had a very bright wood color. I stopped and stepped out of the truck and Harry leaped into the pile. At that moment the clouds parted and a beam of light fell upon this piece of wood. The quilting was gorgeous! I raced back home with as much of this unknown wood as I could and got to work.
As I began to turn this wood, the amazing ribbons I could get led me to believe that this was Bradford Pear. A wood I’ve never turned but have heard it is fantastic to work with. As Harry would say, that is the dam truth. This has now become one of my favorite woods!
We hope you enjoy the video!

Sometimes FOG makes the best bowls. This one is beautiful.

LOL... whenever you go to slo-mo, I expect the bowl is about to blow up! Thankfully it didn't; it survived and came out beautiful!

I was just about to say the same thing! Whenever a woodturning video switches to slow motion, I've been conditioned to expect a catch / breakthrough / something flying off the lathe!

Bradford pear turns so nicely doesn’t it! You surprised me keeping the broken edge, but I like it. Like the round bottom too. Great job!

Bradford pear wood is darker than this and the bark is different.

Nice bowl, Robert. Were you trying to psych us out with the slo-mo? Enjoy that Bradford Pear wood while you can. A lot of states are banning new plantings (Ohio incuded).

Very nice! Excellent treatment. Love the figure! The bark has some great woodpecker/sapsucker holes, much like some mystery FOG wood that I recently found at the county park.
