Woodturning - Sutured Oak Hollow Form
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 18 ธ.ค. 2021
- In this week’s project I’ll take a log of Red Oak and turn it into a hollow form. I left the pith in this piece with the expectation that it would crack as it dried. With my experience Red Oak has a tendency to crack while drying. Once the piece had finished moving, I then went and added some hammered copper wire to add an interesting effect to this piece.
I hope you guys enjoy it as much as Harry and I!
Thank you all for watching!

That was Cool! I would never have thought of making copper staples to hold the crack shut! Well done!
Thanks Stephanie! I was surprised how easy the stapling process went actually. I expected a much more tedious task.
You are a patient man...and clever...looks great
Thanks Charles. It actually wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be once I saw all the holes. Took maybe a couple of hours.
Awesome on the stapled look! Great over all
Glad you liked it!!
Neat idea on using staples. Now you have a Frankenstein bowl or vase on your collection 😉 Nicely done 👍👍
Nice, Robert! That'll work.
Thanks Billy, I was pretty pleased with how it turned out!
Hey Hodge. Nicely done. Interesting making the copper staples. Really enjoyed it. Looks like Harry is taking drawing lessons for Mark TGWT. Thanks for sharing.
Haha! Yeah, Harry needs to work on his drawing skills!
I love the idea of using a camera on your hollowing system!! Now I have to go find a cheep camera and monitor.
It's such a game changer, it almost feels like I'm cheating!
It’s very cool. Thank you for sharing
Thanks Patrick!
Very cool. I enjoyed this one.
Great! Glad you liked it. I think I see a few more pieces like this in the future seeing that I've got a bunch of roughed out oak bowls with cracks!
Great job Robert I like that with the staples
Thanks Terry! I was pleased with how it turned out!
Wow; stunning.
Thanks Andrew!
Neat trick Robert.
Thanks Jack!
Merry Christmas Robert , Family and Harry
Thanks Douglas, Merry Christmas to you as well!
I like the tool u use for the reach around you know to reach around the curve to finish hollowing the sack 🤣🤣
Haha, yeah the reach around is one of my favorite parts!
Really great piece Robert 👏👏👏
Thanks for sharing, interesting Piece. I like what you did with the staples. Full View and Like 👍 Merry Christmas 🎄
Thanks Allen! I was pretty pleased at how it ended up looking in the end! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Awesome work Hodge, that looks great.
Beautiful piece 😊👍
Great job,👍👍👍
Thanks Gao!
How creative!
Nice work Robert (and Father Christmas Harry) the "stitching looks great. Safe days, John
Thanks John! Stay safe as well!
Awesome Piece, Hodge 👍
Awesome work man
Thanks so much Gav!
Beautiful hollow form Robert. I definitely like the copper sutures. Nice work. Probably not my business, but I think Harry needs to get out more. He was really struggling with the ball sack bit. Lol. Take Care.
Thanks Rob! Glad you liked it!
Looks good.
Bien joué Robert c’est jolie bravo 👍👏🇨🇭
Very cool
Excellent. Like your hammered copper staples. They look great and add so much character. Well done!
Thanks Doug! I'm pretty happy with it as well!

Welcome to my channel! Thanks so much for subscribing!
Amazing work Hodge, from top to bottom! The homemade staples are such a brilliant idea! Well done, my friend!
Thanks Seth!
Yup, good way to fix it!
Thanks Valerie! I was pleased with the outcome!
Cool video once again. Great way to handle cracks in oak.
Thanks Mike! I enjoyed the process!
The main thing is that it turned out beautifully! I mended such a crack with a hemp rope. Next time I'll use your method.
Nice Ivan, I considered using some string of some kind but my hand is too big to fit down in the piece to thread the string through
I like the way you incorporated the copper staples in, really unique. By the way, what’s the name of the first tune in this video? It doesn’t match any of the songs in the description.
Thanks! The first song I got from audiohero.com and it was titled "Next Time For Sure". It didn't mention who it was by.
That looks great, Robert (or should I say Dr. Hodge?). Really neat. Was that Harry's friend on your headstock at 7:15? Merry Christmas.
Bill
Frankenstein cool
Thanks Joseph! I might have to try doing it on an ebonized piece of oak to see how it looks!
Güzel 👍👏
hey robert i had to get a new tablet so i subscribed again just to let u know my friend. chris
Ouch.
I feel your pain!
Great looking piece Robert. Question, what is the overall dimensions an how long did it take to hollow out using the boring bar setup?
Thanks Brent! I'd say the piece is about 8in diameter and 8in tall. Probably took about an hour but that's a guess.
Frankenbowl
That's my thought exactly after seeing it finished!
I do NOT have your patience.
Haha, it actually didn't take as long as I expected! Couple of hours I'd say.
I got some fresh black oak (red oak family) and, while it's beautiful and turns great, it smells awful.
I find my garage smelling like a bbq pit after turning the Oak I usually get. Not necessarily a bad thing!
