I’m 15 right now, and yeah people tell me I’m “talented,” but I feel like the better way to put it is “wow, I can see how much time and effort you’ve put into this drawing,” because you’re not judging the drawing by its inherent “worth” but rather by how much the artist worked on it, which should be the real measure of value. The best drawing I’ve ever done is one that I feel no emotional attachment to, because I did it in two hours. Compare that to the 12 hour drawing I did, and I’m much happier when you compliment the 12 hour one because that’s the one I’m proud of.

I think it's difficult for people who aren't artists to understand how their words read to us who are. If I had a nickel for each time a classmate said I was "a good drawer" back in school just because I could draw decently, I'd be able to buy a gaming console.

Thinking of young and more talented artists hurts because they have achieved that people praise them for their knowledge, which they have way more time to expand as they age, and they seem to have a better learning curve to have learned everything so fast. It's awful when you were at the same age, people just didn't praise your art as much or at all. I've been there as well. But since I can get praises from others, which feels amazing, I can focus more on how much I myself have progressed because back then not many people did it. I can also look at how much I can still progress and learn, to make more people like my art.

This literally happened to me, as a kid people would say I was so good at art for my age or my family would specifically bring up my age when talking about my art. And as I got older I started seeing people younger than me who had much more skill than me and it really disheartened me. I went from being the best of my age group to being less than the people younger than me and it really hurt my confidence until I didn't want to do art anymore. Thankfully I pushed through it and now am really happy with my art journey.

  • @Harin9unu

When i found out an 16 year old artist (im 19yo) i got really frustrated cuz they really are better than me, but not only because of their talent, i figured out that they simply have this art style that is more detailed and appealing and also are way more disposition and motivation to do art than me which makes intern thoughts like "im not working hard enough?" pop out and intesify a pre existing burnout. I had to canalize this frustration and transform it as will strenght to draw more. The truth is it will always hurt if u let your ego be affected by it, remember: what makes you do art? if the reason is simply "being better at it than other people" of course you're going to suffer the reality of the existence of other many talented artists right onto your face. But probably that's not your reason, so do not stop and focus to achieve your real goal.

i feel that. i was “really good for a 12 year old” because my proportions and such were pretty decent, but i grew up to be “not good enough for a 21 year old”, and got into this vicious cycle of not drawing and not improving. now i am trying to focus more on the joy of creating and telling stories i want to, and expecting improvement as more of a byproduct. of course, art & animation study is still important, and i will be doing that. it is only fun when you don’t suck haha

I started drawing about 13-14 and I was absolute shit. Especially being a big fandom where like half of us were young teens and seeing so many people who drew like they started as a baby really hurt my self-esteem and I quit for a bit too. Even now almost 18 I still got a lot to improve on but I'm so much better because I stuck with it.

oof, yeah that one hit close to home. My art was like the main thing people associated me with so when that disappeared my identity and confidence crumbled too. I also think focusing on age is an easy way to not have to actually look at a person. Not to mention that it discredits kids and pressures the elder.

As a younger artist, it is genuinely so important to remember that you aren't the best at everything and dont have to be. Not only are there artists who are older than you and "better" but younger artists as well.
Just because you think you arent as good as someone else also doesnt mean you suck at something. Everyone is good at their own things, and that also applies to art.
You kay be good at character design but bad at backgrounds (like me) or vice versa. Maybe you can only draw animals but struggle to draw people.
There is also no scale to what is considered good for an age group, dont let it get you down. If people tell you otherwise, then that shows something about their character, not your skills.
Everyone starts somewhere and your skills will grow and change as you develop them. Practice makes progress, not perfect.
Love your content, keep it up!

    • @re-blitz
      @re-blitz 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

There is no such thing as drawing talent!!!! Drawing is not a skill we as humans have evolved to perfect, therefore a child cannot be born with a skill it’s dna has not recognized as even remotely helpful.
Any younger person you see that’s good at drawing has probably had access to tons of resources and large support from those around them. And even IF “drawing talent” existed, that doesn’t mean you can’t draw yourself!

    • @cysyx
      @cysyx 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +13

@re-blitz Ever heard of people being "good with their hands" or having a "good eye"? I agree that you can learn any skill there is, including drawing. However, there are people who simply learn some things faster than others. That's what people often refer to when they say someone is talented. To be talented is to have a natural aptitude for something. Denying that their's no such thing, meaning that everyone start the sprint at the same line, is simply false.

When I tried to go back to it I realized I fell out of practice and now with my new partiner trying to be supportive I see so many people half my age doing so much better it's a struggle to even try.

It's crazy how some people think if you are older, like 20-30 y/o if you draw bad/average you are something to laugh at. It's like, some people have art like a hobby and can't draw everyday. Maybe they draw 1 time in the month or less, but it's still their hobby. Or maybe they just started, not everyone draws when they are kids or teens. I never judge by the age, everyone can enjoy art at their pace.

I remember in middle school there was this 1 girl that had really good anatomy sketches whereas I just winged it with my noodle arms and rectangular torsos. I only got into art a year prior in 5th grade when one of my friends showed me how to draw triangular looking anime eyes. I had my chicken scratch sketching phase up until about highschool. I dibbled and dabbled in different art styles in my freshmen year art class, then after my sophomore year I decided to learn anatomy. It was at that point where I finally got to where that girl was in middle school, and even then it took me another year to actually understand most of it.

i think the feeling of lacking skill is enhanced by the fact that as artists, we surround ourselves with other artists more than non-artists do - just because there's a 13 year old better than you doesn't mean that your skills aren't likely better than 90% of the general population as is; they do make you special, and they're always worth improving, whether at age 13 or 31

This is happening to me currently. When i was a kid, I honestly had a very big ego when it came to art. People would go mad telling me how talented i was. I was the BEST!! I WAS A PRODIGY.
Then one day i realised that i didnt know any of the fundamentals. I didnt even know what art fundamentals were. The amount of things i didnt know (that i thought were just part of my "natural talent") was overwhelming. That on top of seeing people younger than me getting the same treatment i did just made me feel more upset.
Over time i started drawing less because it felt like if i wasnt good enough to impress people, there was no point. I used to just draw because it was fun but now i judge myself so harshly because im not as creative as i used to be. I still draw but i have to tell myself beforehand that im doing it for fun. Otherwise i worry so much about the outcome that i never start

  • @DMAN99

One thing I've noticed over the years is that a lot of young and talented artists tend to plateau and stagnate quicker. If you don't have that natural art evolution, with or without talent, it can lead to you losing all steam in your growth. Even if you're good, you can't rely on innate talent, you have to also grind just like everyone else.
I think especially nowadays a lot of young artists are exposed to an huge amount of amazing artwork more frequently which leads to them absorbing it via observation much quicker than previous generations. However, a lot of these young artists will more than likely stop drawing once they reach a certain point.

  • @RecklessDime2
    @RecklessDime2 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

It doesn't add up to compare artists after a certain threshold because in the grand scheme of things, the level it's pretty similar, obviating certain traits that are unique for them or even flaws, but again, it doesn't actually compute, more when you consider that even the flaws of an artist is that makes them unique in the first place, because you know that it's human. It's, well, particularly striking in a field that is so damn subjective like this one. You could demean yourself but who the hell doesn't tell you that someone else is going through the same thing and is worshipping you?. That's the thing, it doesn't matter.
It's like a quote that someone else said, the begining may differ but the end of the curve or what could look like it in the usual standards are ultimately identical for everyone, regardless of age.

  • @blytheist

I actually relate to being the "gifted artist" at a young age. Everyone loved my art, asked me to draw stuff for them, etc basically all my life but it caused me to have extremely unrealistic expectations for myself. When I turned 15 I experienced autistic burnout and intense perfectionism to the point where I couldn't finish a drawing at all. I'm 18 now and I haven't finished a single art piece in 3 years despite trying. I still love art but I just don't have the motivation anymore.

  • @soueieven2120

I threw my passion for drawing out of the window after leaving the art school. Sure, this place gave me good friends, some knowledge and experience, but it sucked away my ability to feel joy of creating something. The worst thing? I don't even want it back. I feel like there will always be someone "talented" anyway.
What I want to say is that comparison can make you grow, but it's more likely to drown you. Don't listen to "talented" or "not talented", if you want to do something - do it. And stay determined. Don't let others limit you to their words.

Something to also take into account is that not everyone has the same situations. Not everyone has the same amount of time, not everyone has the same amount of support, not everyone has the same amount of resources, etc. Using age as the singular factor as to whether or not someone should be good at a skill makes skill level a binary and not a spectrum (imo, at least)

As a kid i was talented at almost any creative thing I persued, espeically musical but I also had it with drawing and clay work. It is odd how being showered with compliments and people telling you how bright the future is actually ends up being damaging, because once those comments stop you really notice it. It creates a need for validation.
I know people arent going to like this part, but a similar thing happens with appearance. I was not just talented, I was also "so pretty". Most people develop EDs through bullying, for me I got hit by the lack of validation and it really made me need praise to feel of value.

Honestly it's no one's fault that younger artists can often be on par with artists who are older. The reason younger artists are so good today is because they are lucky enough to have the materials to do so. 10 years ago you couldn't learn how to draw without paying or being mentored. Nowadays, there's enough content on the internet to fully educate yourself on art. It's not just because they work harder, they have a significant advantage due to the time they were born. Chances are, if we keep going this way, there could be 11 year olds on par with 30 year olds. This isn't a threat though, as employers and commissioners don't go for "how good your art is", it matters how much experience you have.

The thing is when you put some effort on something, you acquire the skill to measure others in that field. You can immediately notice the person who will be at the same level as you when he/she is older. They are very few if you are good and that makes you very very valuable. Be friend with them, teach them, and hire them.
If you find everyone around is/will be above your level, ewwww, you better quit... or learn again.

Is it stupid from a business perspective? Maybe. But even if I am Aries, I don't feel the need to be rival to everyone around me. I want a healthy enviornment

I used to be that "talented for x age" kid and I'm not really sure when that stopped or when I stopped caring about it.
Maybe it was when I started drawing for fun and when I actually began to enjoy the process instead just the praise/attention part. I still enjoy getting priase for my art and skills ofc, who doesn't, but it's definitely not my sole driving motivator anymore nor was it when I first started to draw.
So in a sense, I draw like a child, except with more skill and experience.

Im 12 and yeah, I dare to say that I am better than most people my age or older than me. I can draw almost any artstyle perfectly or atleast good. But I know that in like 15 years that will be normal for most artists, and chances aren't that big I will ascend to godly level art or something.

Realest, I used to be the best artist in elementary school but for some reason I lost my passion no matter how much I try to get it back, now I'm in my 20' and can't draw and have no absolutely no talents

The same happened to me with chess, i played at the french championship when I was really young and some people told me I was so talented and good for my age. Now I'm bored of this game, I'm just above average and can't help but say no to everybody who wants to play against not me but the prodigy I could've been if I kept progressing as when I was a child.

I try to correct people who use the word "talented" when talking about my drawing. To me, it devalues the time and effort I've put into honing this skill. A talent is something you're "gifted" with, but a skill is something you put effort into. Are there people who have an innate disposition for drawing? For sure! But the vast majority of artists practice their asses off, and to have it called a talent just feels insulting.

Hello, i am not sure how to word this but i am starting, I do game design and I feel held back by artists, always so stuck up, I have never meet a single nice artist 😢 so it really made me go ew when I thought about learning to art.
I wanna get into digital art, for my games, i got a Wacom but after finally saving moneys I wanna get a display tablet. I saw your tablet and Software video but that didn't really help me answer the question and buying one to then find out it isn't what I hoped for, really isn't an option.
Not asking for alot of your time, just for 5 mins to help me choose a thing, i really liked how u described the iPad with the gen 2 pen and the paper screen, but if u were me, what do you think is the "dude get this one, and u ONLY need to upgrade cause you want to be fancy"
I am using paper and stuff but i have spent so much on just sketchbooks and have no a horrible time putting my paper art into digital format.
Also, I'm going to use your channel as my guide so, pleased to meet you sensei!

Oml I quited drawing so many times 😅 the anger, the frustration I felt because I didn't know how to improve. I still don't know, but I am drawing and I'm happy (kinda 🤭)

And then there's people like me, who's so lacking in self-esteem from years of being praise starved that almost *any* compliment towards my work is like crack.
If I don't get any after a while I get discouraged and stop for a brief period, but then I come back with a vengeance out of sheer spite 😭

Art regression happens regradless whatever age youre at
And also people rate different artstyles as suprior than another like realism to cartoons yknow so I jus wont trust non artist people who think am not talented cuz I draw cartoons or semi realism
    Its the effort that counts

I get seeing those younger than you that are better could be depressing, but maybe I'm weird for just going "holy shit, I wanna work to get that good" or "wow that looks cool". Like I get motivated by seeing good art work, not demotivated.

like there is so much shit that can make you evolve slower. Growing up poor, disability, care work, just simple things like the time it takes you to get to work/school. Or the school you go to. How much homework you have etc. Its not in your control when you become a better artist. It is in your control IF you become a better artist though. If you practice, you'll likely improve. Take it at your own speed and don't let anyone stop you.
(I wanted to draw today but I am getting a migraine omw home right now so I know I won't be drawing. And thats okay :) )

I just gauge it off of how long the person has been drawing
Like I just found someone who’s only been drawing since 2020 and he’s already just as good as me
    And I’ve been drawing since 2012 😭

  • @BeeBN

Age isn't exactly a good indicator of talent, if you took a 30 year old man who has never drawn and he gets good within a month he had talent but just never had an opportunity to express it until now, a better measurement of talent is how fast the person improves, not the age of the person, art is not a sport so age is not a very good indication of the maximum skill output of a person here
