Fun fact, the Albatrosses are missing a frame or two in the US animation. It's another one of the NUMEROUS overlooked, small things that "fix" NES games to run properly as intended. *cough* Star Tropics music *cough*

    • @codahighland

Maybe the frames were drawn and then left out because they thought it was too slow.

I believe the Birdo Ostro thing is more likely an error than a retcon..I base this on the fact that the enemy called Birdo unquestionably looks like an ostrich which is clearly what the name Ostro was based on. An error of this nature isn’t that unlikely since we know they also used the wrong Phanto image.

1:24:10 Actually there is a youtuber named 2CPhoenix that managed to translate the symbols into English letters and dubbed the symbols as "Dolphic". I know this is a compilation of older videos and this was discovered after the original video released, but I wanted to let others know!

As both a refresher and a video I may or may not have put on to fall asleep to, I'm really digging how soon after the Snake Eater video this was uploaded.
Honestly, it's kind of wild to think about how quickly the years pass by. I've always loved Region Break and of course I'll mention Sequence Break whenever I can for the novelty of that show. And more of these compilations will certainly be watched by me, I'll tell you that much.
Getting my binge of Shesez is as natural as breakfast for me, now, just a super solid mood lifter if I'm ever needing to chill.

I remember somewhere back around 2009, when people really started spreading the word about Mario 2 and Doki Doki Panic, a lot of people were saying things like "Mario 2 sucks because it's not even Mario...". It annoyed me because that made no sense, i mean, to say the game itself is no good, just because of that one detail? Wasn't a big deal. Still a fun game, there was no reason we couldn't appreciate it for what it was. I always liked the game either way.

@@nic.taylor3733 That's why I like to see things for myself, make my own decision. I can't even count how many games were considered to just be bad, until many years later, someone took a closer, unbiased look at it, and then after sharing the overlooked details about it... suddenly it's a great game. A hidden gem. It's weird how that works. Even like with movies, sometimes they flop at release, and then 20+ years later everyone loves it. People are too quick to judge sometimes.

A really interesting thing about Mario Bros 2, is when they changed up all the animations, they actually added a glitch by accident. Every single thing that animates like that is missing a single frame. It's most visible with the Albatoss enemies, since the missing frame is the wing going back up: it gives them that really jumpy thing where the wings slowly flap down and then snap back up, instead of having a frame between. You can also see it on the POW block and falling sand really well, since you'll see a distinct "jump" where the letters or the falling dots appear to move farther because of the missed frame.

55:10 = In Japanese, there was no mistake in it. It is a literal translation of how you spell Koopa in Japanese. Japanese name of Koopa spelled in Katakana is クッパ , which if we translate it, the spelling is Kuppa. Japanese wordings and letterings does not follow correct spelling, they follow correct pronunciation.
So if you spell Koopa using the O instead of U in Japanese, it will just be Koppa コッパ . And even if you tried to add another O in it just to correct the spelling, it will still sound Kopa but with longer O sound, コオパ

1:03:05 It looks like there just enough sprites on the screen that the powerup being spawned forced the block sprite to unload, and since the block is responsible for drawing the empty block object afterwards, it ended up leaving the spot blank. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before, so that's pretty neat!

The thing about Clawgrip, they took out the third Mouser battle, because they wanted to break up the repetiton of 3 Mouser battles and keep the bosses feeling fresh. When they tried to find a replacement, they looked for something in the Mario games, but there were so few in the Mario canon at the time, but they figured that the use of the sidestepper made perfect sense. In fact the GBA port has him as a sidestepper before turning into Clawgrip

I dunno if someone answered this already but the reason for the difference in the vegetable in the wart/mamu fight is that, the vgeetable spat from the dream machine in doki doki, is a daikon radish, a coomon staple veggie used in stews and more commonly, on miso soups. From what i underatand, daikon radish doesnt grow in america so the localizer thought that the next best thing is a turnip, a seasonal veggie that we here in the pbilippines also grows for consumption in raw, being paired with salt or fish paste, a very nice and cooling snack for anyone. So its just the matter of availability and knowledge base of its localization.

So Yoshi is a dragon in Japan. It should be noted that he is a "doragon" (a Japanification of the English word "dragon") instead of a "Ryuu" (the normal Japanese word for dragon). European style dragons are called "doragon" while Chinese style dragons are called "ryuu."

With the B'tub ring it was an abbreviation of "bathtub ring", a reference to the ring of scum that forms around a bathtub when draining it due to the soap and oils from bathing products floating on the water surface. This was likely playing off the way that Peach's equipment is based around domestic items, and the abbreviation (in addition to space reasons) also was a loose pun off shorthand spellings of "betrothed" resembling shorthand for "bathed".

I am fairly certain the description for Birdo/Catherine is not saying she likes to be called "Kissy", but "Cathy". The translator may have misread キャシー as キッシー. I know some versions of the English manual say "She'd rather be called Birdetta", which implies more of a different name to acknowledge her gender rather than just a nickname.
Also, that bit is of note because there is a false rumor that the localization was what introduced Birdo being a "guy who thinks he is a girl", when that was present in the original Japanese version as well.

Can we get a boundary break for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? There's so many things that some people can even see because everyone is racing... And Baby Park has a lot of things.

The Birdo/Ostro thing is just an instance of them accidentally mixing the names up in the manual. I think the names are correct in the end credits IIRC?

Actually, the names were mixed up in the end credits as well, and it wouldn't be corrected until the Game Boy Advance remake...

The bird mask in super mario bros 2 kinda looks like falco lombardi, down to the red outlines around the eyes

I think it’s more just in reference to real falcons and small birds of prey, a few of them have an outline around the eyes, some thicker than others, it’s actually the inspiration behind ancient Egyptian’s makeup style, they loved the birds so much and had them as deities, that they used to wear a type of eyeliner in reference to the birds EDIT : Malar Stripes are what they’re called, Cheetahs also have them!

random thought. maybe the japanese sound for dropping the lamp is supposed to be like a train bell? for 'door is open'?
