Segale was Nintendo of America's warehouse manager at the time when the company moved its operations from New York City to Seattle in mid-1981, and demanded back pay. They honored him by renaming Jumpman after him. And the reason why Mario was given a mustache in Donkey Kong, was due to graphical limitations at the time.

@zeonmoo192 The original Mario being Mario's dad is a theory that had been around for a while, and makes sense since Rare has said that Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong and Yoshis Island DS shows Mario and DK being the same age. But unless Pauline and Cranky Kong also got sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom, it still doesn't make sense for the arcade games to be in New York. Since clearly Pauline, Cranky, DK, etc or all on the same planet as the Mushroom Kingdom now. And it's openly stated that New Donk City is where the original Donkey Kong took place now. The ceremony is depicting an event from the city's history, and reenacts the events of Donkey Kong arcade.
It's surprising just how many coincidences had to go right for us to have the Mario we know today and for Nintendo's golden child to have grown their company this much.
Great Job correcting the "Popeye Arcade Misconception." It's kind of wild that it took us this long to find out the real truth...that the Popeye arcade game faced technical problems and not a license one. It also doesn't help that we would get a Popeye game after Donkey Kong, which should mean that they fixed the issue by then. Very cool. As for the Mario series, Nintendo and Miyamoto really should insinuate the original backstory for the Mario Bros a bit more. 2 Italian plumbers from Brooklyn getting sucked into a wacky world like the Mushroom Kingdom sounds way more logical and still fantastical. Fun Fact: According to Don James, a veteran worker at the Nintendo Warehouse who knew Mario Segale, he stated that Segale was quite reclusive. We need more Charles Martinet voicing Mario games…! 😭 He isn’t retired, according to him, and is still doing other acting roles. It’s just a common company practice in Japan to silently move a key figure of power to a limited position instead of firing them, to avoid controversy. That’s what this whole "Mario Ambassador" thing actually means. While such a move might work well in the Japanese cultural context, such practices can be considered against the worker’s rights in other countries and even illegal in some, making it controversial at least. One that doesn’t increase the trust towards Nintendo necessarily.

Wario was concepted as German in Mario Party 1 and 2, when he appeared for first time as a 3d character, as his voicer was a German. But on other games, seems that Charles Martinet took Wario to voice him later, beginning in Mario Party 3 and voicing him on platfirm games, that came later.

this is a strange year. 1985 was the year it was released in the US and on the Famicom in Japan, we in Europe got it in 1987, while in 1986 came a Famicom DIsk System port of the game. why he said 86 instead of 85 or 87 is a mystery for me.

In 1986 there was a Japanese only Mario OVA, Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Peach! where the lines of the "real world" the mushroom kingdom, and the video game itself were kind of blurred. In it Mario & Luigi were shown to run a store in a western town. So at least with that OVA, it seemed to imply they could be from Texas or possibly even Mexico. But that of course was in those early formative years and never caught on.
It's not 100% confirmed that Martinet did the pinball voice, as the voice actor hasn't officially been credited and the performance is quite different from other early Martinet performances. The claim that Martinet was the actor comes from a Reddit post that claimed he said he was when asked about it, but a known issue is Martinet's memory of some of his early work has been mistaken in some other disputes about credit, notably over Thomas Spindler's portrayal of Wario in certain N64 games.

@zeonmoo192 The original Mario being Mario's dad is a theory that had been around for a while, and makes sense since Rare has said that Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong and Yoshis Island DS shows Mario and DK being the same age.
But unless Pauline and Cranky Kong also got sucked into the Mushroom Kingdom, it still doesn't make sense for the arcade games to be in New York. Since clearly Pauline, Cranky, DK, etc or all on the same planet as the Mushroom Kingdom now. And it's openly stated that New Donk City is where the original Donkey Kong took place now. The ceremony is depicting an event from the city's history, and reenacts the events of Donkey Kong arcade.
It's surprising just how many coincidences had to go right for us to have the Mario we know today and for Nintendo's golden child to have grown their company this much.

Great Job correcting the "Popeye Arcade Misconception." It's kind of wild that it took us this long to find out the real truth...that the Popeye arcade game faced technical problems and not a license one. It also doesn't help that we would get a Popeye game after Donkey Kong, which should mean that they fixed the issue by then. Very cool.
As for the Mario series, Nintendo and Miyamoto really should insinuate the original backstory for the Mario Bros a bit more.

We need more Charles Martinet voicing Mario games…! 😭 He isn’t retired, according to him, and is still doing other acting roles. It’s just a common company practice in Japan to silently move a key figure of power to a limited position instead of firing them, to avoid controversy. That’s what this whole "Mario Ambassador" thing actually means. While such a move might work well in the Japanese cultural context, such practices can be considered against the worker’s rights in other countries and even illegal in some, making it controversial at least. One that doesn’t increase the trust towards Nintendo necessarily.

this is a strange year. 1985 was the year it was released in the US and on the Famicom in Japan, we in Europe got it in 1987, while in 1986 came a Famicom DIsk System port of the game. why he said 86 instead of 85 or 87 is a mystery for me.

Reading these comments, its kinda wild to me that so many people don't know that Mario and Luigi are New Yorkers lol, did they only ever run with that bit of trivia here in the states?
In 1986 there was a Japanese only Mario OVA, Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Peach! where the lines of the "real world" the mushroom kingdom, and the video game itself were kind of blurred. In it Mario & Luigi were shown to run a store in a western town. So at least with that OVA, it seemed to imply they could be from Texas or possibly even Mexico. But that of course was in those early formative years and never caught on.

It's not 100% confirmed that Martinet did the pinball voice, as the voice actor hasn't officially been credited and the performance is quite different from other early Martinet performances. The claim that Martinet was the actor comes from a Reddit post that claimed he said he was when asked about it, but a known issue is Martinet's memory of some of his early work has been mistaken in some other disputes about credit, notably over Thomas Spindler's portrayal of Wario in certain N64 games.

Apparently the story about Mario Segale bursting in and demanding payment is a myth. Mario was someone the Nintendo staff had never actually met. He was an enigma. And it seems to have struck their fancy that the protagonist of the game could be Mario.
