  • I love the BMW 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine. It's mated to an all-wheel drive system in the 2023 BMW M340i, but is it enough to lure new buyers with its revised price tag? Paul Maric finds out!

    I bought the LCI version of M340i in mid November 2022. The build quality is exceptionally good. The B58 is a gem and handling is superb. Its build quality is so much better than the C300 I've also got. It's quite comfortable but I would rather take my Range Rover for a long trip. The only issue I have with this car is the lack of Comfort Access due to semi conductor chip shortage last year and this option cannot be retrofit unfortunately. Other than that, I'm very happy with it.

    So interesting that you mention it...I'm wrapping up my 3 year lease with my model 3 performance and while the tech is cool, performance is awesome and auto pilot is amazing for not having to fool with traffic... there is no emotion in it. I just placed and order for a new m340i with the optional m sport exhaust and carbon interior trim and can't wait to get it. I came really close to going for a 2019 M3 DCT competition but despite not being too much more expensive, I really wanted the tech, adaptive cruise and AWD that the m340 has.
    Also, I would be getting a newer car and the M340i has essentially the same 0-60 time as the F80 M3 DCT.
    That said, (if buying brand new) the M3P is significantly cheaper both in monthly payments and obviously no fuel cost so that should also be worth considering and I've been enjoying free charging at my office for a couple years.

    I own the new LCI. The new idrive 8 is absolutely gorgeous. It’s so well designed and works so well. The ‘Hey BMW’ personal assistant is almost flawless. The amount of personalisation is simply incredible. I love the Harmon Kardon system, it is magical to say the least. The exhaust notes and the way it drives sets a new benchmark to an already proven recipe from BMW. The way the M340i puts down its power is so smooth and precise. I had traded in my rear wheel drive G80 M3 competition and would rate the new LCI M340i as much better car overall. Don’t get me wrong is M3 is also a great car but very impractical unless you are driving it on a racetrack. The M340i is the best of both worlds. Comfortable and quick. Plus I have launched in in under 3.8secs matching Matt Watson from Carwow after breaking in the engine after 2000kms. Otherwise a great review Paul.

Perhaps a little more real world city driving impressions, however since this is a performance car the test was pertinent. All done in an it's not about me it's about the car manner. Well done and thanks.

    This is a nice review! I drive this model in the USA and it’s interesting to see the differences in the interior. I wanted to mention the breaks he points out in the review. They are extremely “grabby”. BUT, as they break in and you get to learn how to depress them they become easier to modulate comfortably. The breaks are great because they stop effectively but the pedal distance needed is very little. I have owned several Toyota Prius and the brakes remind me of the similar feeling at just the beginning of breaking. I’ve driven mine about 3,000 miles and can break comfortably for my passengers. Otherwise it’s just fine.

    Great review Paul, just a suggestion - when you measure the 80-120 kph time, maybe don’t do it in one go from 0 to 100 as that isn’t indicative of the time it’ll take the car to shift down and get a move on if you were actually at 80 and wanting to overtake. A solution could be to use the cruise control set at 80 and then jam the throttle to get a more realistic figure. Great stuff otherwise, cheers.

    • @anmolgandhi
      @anmolgandhi ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@fakejake8965 My view is that overtaking tests should be done in the car’s comfiest settings given that is how it would be driven predominantly and its also the ‘worst-case’ scenario with reference to how fast the car can accelerate. Going from 0-120 in one go means that the car is in the right gear all the time, which isn’t representative of how it would be if you were cruising at 80. More realistically, you jam the throttle at 80 and the car downshifts (which can have its own lag) and then you get a move on.

    • @RtB68

      @@anmolgandhi It's a solid point.

    • @anmolgandhi
      @anmolgandhi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@layne4376 I agree that it is a different measure, I just think that going from 80-120 when going directly from 0 is not representative of what would happen in the real world. The different modes do indeed affect the transmission lag, and knowing how long it will take you to actually get from 80-120 when you need to overtake someone on a highway is more useful (atleast from my POV) versus knowing how fast you can go from 80-120 in the most ideal conditions, which are hardly found in our daily driving.

    I want to add to my experience with this car regarding suspension without adaptive suspension. I’ve read in Car & Driver magazine that the adaptive suspension was not noticeable in comparison without. (It’s a $500 USD difference if optioned).
    The ride is stiff. There is no floating over bumps or more forgiving surfaces. On roads with potholes and rough surfaces it is quite loud in the cabin. You will feel every imperfection. However, on smooth pavement it’s whisper quiet and smooth. Different road surfaces are very annoying to me insofar as noise and handling and experience in a luxury vehicle. I haven’t driven enough cars to give a similarity, but it’s not floating over imperfections.

      That said, the stiff ride is my only disappointment. The car is excellent in all other aspects. Very fun to drive. Beautiful and we'll built.

      I have spent plenty of time driving the M340i XDrive with and without adaptive suspension and on different size wheels with and without runflat tires. I am shocked they don’t bring in more cars with the adaptive suspension and/or equip the cars with smaller tires and/or non-runflat tires. The usual setup I see on dealer lots is no adaptive suspension and 19” runflat tires. That’s a horrible ride. To rectify that without spending a fortune I recommend switching to Michelin PS4S or Michelin PS4 AS depending on whether you want a Summer or All-Season tire. It will massively calm down the ride. It will also improve grip but will sacrifice some gas mileage.

    Great review Paul... I love these things. Why BMW don't give us the M340i wagon and a wagon with the diesel B57 is just madness especially as the UK get them .. I'd by one in a heartbeat.. From watching plenty of reviews and dyno tests of the mighty B58 and seeing the 0 to 100 times the cars run including the X5's powered by them it's pretty obvious that BMW haven't been honest ( fine with me 😄) with the power output of the engine. Most seem to make the 285 at the wheels indicting well over 300 flywheel kw..

      @@tim9241 Just ordered a Mazda 6 Anniversary turbo wagon as it's one of the few sensible but quick wagons on the market. Honestly, if they're already making the quick BMW wagons for the UK, it's not a big deal bringing a few here especially considering we get the slower wagon already. Would be a non-issue financially and from an import standpoint.

    I've had my m340i for 1 month. For me, this is the perfect daily driver with an ideal balance between comfort and performance. Idrive 8, the large screens and a really usable voice recognition system adds to the experience. I went for the skyscraper grey and think it looks classy rather than advertising its performance. Because of the component shortages, there is no comfort access. I've only just got used to locking the doors as my previous car had this. Amazing nothing was taken when i consistently left it unlocked. The dash customisation is limited and the Harmon Kardon sound system is better than standard but nothing to write home about. The matrix led headlights react well but the light coverage is patchy and uneven compared to the matrix leds on my previous car. None of these negatives are show stoppers and i absolutely love this car. I was initially going to get the 330i but when I added up the options compared to what comes standard on the 340 the difference isnt substantial and then the engine is just lovely.

      i got the 23 m3 comp xdrive in pure frozen grey ii (which is matte skyscraper grey) and was lucky to get comfort access. i use it all the time b/c most of my scrubs dont have pants pockets so i just use my phone to drive and leave the keys at home. i wished it had the option for the bowers & wilkinson stereo as i wouldve easily ticked that box.
