Me too, he's a great teacher. He reminds me of my Daddy. He taught school for about 7 years before he went back to Auburn to get his Masters in engineering. His teaching style was reminiscent of yours.
One of my absolute favorites! With mashed potatoes and a side of granny green beans, that's comfort food at it's finest! Have a wonderful blessed week!
I haven’t had Swiss Steak since long before my mother passed away. Her version had tomatoes in it. Absolutely delicious. Miss it, but not as much as I miss her. ❤
That was Swiss Steak in our family, too. Stewed tomatoes, onions and green bell pepper in the braising liquid. Flour was pounded into the steak pieces, before frying. It was my dad's favorite way to eat round steak.
I am so happy to see your recipe. I'm 70 years old. My mom used to make Swiss steak with gravy when I was a kid. I couldn't find her recipe since she hadn't made it since I was about 10 years old. She used round steak as well. None of this modern hamburger patties I see used in new recipes for Swiss steak. Lol. Round steak was always cheaper and this was always a great way to have round steak tender enough to eat it. I think she had a slightly different technique, as I remember her cooking it all in a big pan on stovetop. But it still simmered for a long time. I can't wait to try this. Brings back memories of my Italian mom, who passed away 3 years ago. I love your explanations and running commentary, as I think its a great way to teach and encourage young cooks.
My mom made her's like your mom did (back in the 70's). She passed away 3 yrs ago as well. Lord do I miss her; I think of all the meals she cooked for our family often and make them here and there. I agree; their videos sure help young cooks with the great instructions!
I’m the same age as you, and I remember my mom making this in a huge Paul Revere pan on top of the stove. I remember what she put in it, but not the quantity. Now I have a recipe written from the author’s, and my memories will come back of her. But I didn’t like having to watch Ted Mack’s amateur hour, or Mitch Miller sing along show. A fair trade off for good food!
Tom & Melissa… I fixed your “oh so tender Swiss steak” for dinner and we just finished eating. Oh my, you weren’t kidding!!! Sooo tender! I fixed mashed potatoes and peas with ours. My husband loved it! Thank you for sharing this and so many other delicious recipes! Thanks also for sharing your love for the Lord and His church. Have a wonderful week! ❤
That looks so delicious. I always use round steaks to make a dish we call 8 hour steak. You simply take 2 round steaks, place them in a 9"x 13" pan. Pour 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup and 1 pkg. of Lipton onion soup mix on them. Cover with foil and place in a 200 degree F. oven for 6 to 8 hours. The soup makes a delicious gravy and I also serve it with mashed and corn. Too funny!
I cook round steaks in my casserole crock-pot like that. I do sear the steaks first, but no flour. Just a quick sear on each side then into the crockpot (it's the shallow 9" x 13" rectangular one). Add the soups, cover and cook on low all day long. It's just Crock-Pot Steak in Mushroom Gravy at our house.
My mom taught me how to make this when I was a teenager. She called it poor man's meal, because it would feed me my brother and her and still have leftovers for her to take to work the next day. She would have the steak tenderizer at the butcher. When it was done we had mashed potatoes and green beans and biscuits to sop up the gravy. I made it for my husband on our first date and he fell in love with it. He said that was when I fixed that he knew I was a keeper.
I just joined you about a month ago. Your style of cooking is just what I’ve been looking for. The way that you present your recipes is so clear and precise. I’m a baby boomer and been cooking for years but I sure enjoy new recipes and simple ingredients. Sharing with us is no easy task. I’m sure TH-cam is a lot of work. So thank you for what you do. ❤
Love Swiss steak! Louisville, Ky here. We had this often growing up but Mom always included stewed tomatoes in ours. I make it myself sometimes, but I like to eat over white rice. Growing up we usually had mashed potatoes with it and probably green beans from Daddy's garden. Mom cooked hers in an electric skillet on low for a couple hours. She loved her electric skillet and used it often.
We have an electric skillet, but we've never made this recipe in it. Sounds like a great option. Thank you very much for watching our channel. It's nice having you at the table with us.
Oh wow! Looks delicious 😋. I'm a single lady, so I love to cook once, freeze, then warm it when ready to eat. Nothing compares to a home cooked meal. Definitely trying this recipe 🙂🦋
My mom always made Swiss steak but it was different a bit. But, it was just as tender and delicious! Dredge and fry it up the same. But she would cut onion, peppers and carrots and would mix beef broth with pan juices from frying meat as well as a big can of diced Italian tomatoes over the meat and cover and bake. The flour from steak would thicken everything perfectly and would have it with rice or mashed potatoes. Now I need to make some Swiss steak! Yummy either way to me!
I have never had Swiss steak that didn't have tomatoes in it. My mother, grandmother, and I have always used the same recipe as your mother and it is wonderful.
Swiss steak is one of our family's favorite dishes!! My Grandparents made it. My Mom made it, and now I carry on the tradition! The children in our family who didn't have the opportunity to know their Great-grandparents or Great, great Grandparents, get to know them thru this dish. I love sharing stories of my Grandparents and my Mom with the younger kids. It allows them a connection with some of the best people in our family. When we need comfort food, I make Swiss steak. We make ours a little different. We use tomato juice as the broth and gravy. My son used to call his plate "Swiss steak with volcano potatoes." LOL. We also serve with corn and a salad with oil and vinegar dressing. Thank you for the video and walk down memory lane. I needed it today.
Oh my gosh! I just fixed this last night. My mom always fixed it with a tomato gravy. I did mine in the instant pot for the first time. It turned out tender and delicious. I love your channel.
Hi Tom…. I could not wait to tell you that I made this Swiss Steak tonight and it was so delicious. I had not even thought about Swiss Steak since I was a kid. I have never made it before myself but I can tell you that I will be making it again. I love watching you and your wife and I have made a lot of your recipes. Keep the oldie but goodies coming. Thank you.
Swiss steak has always been my favorite meal ever! My little Mother would fix it for me on my birthdays. I fixed it tonight for dinner. I do put peppers and tomatoes with my swiss steak. ❤❤
Oh my word …. My mouth is watering big time !! I bet it would also be great with some mushrooms added !! I am definitely going to try this !! Thank You Tom and Melissa for sharing this !!
Made this for supper tonight😋 With mashed potatoes & cold tomato salad... Rave reviews👍 Everyone commented how great the house smelled while it was cooking!😊
It really does smell and taste delicious! We know exactly what you’re describing. Thanks for giving us feedback on this recipe after you’ve tried it. We appreciate it.
Excellent take on a Midwest classic. Mom got this in the oven before Sunday School and was ready when we got home from church. She added sliced tomatoes in the summer when they were fresh, and a sprig of rosemary and a couple bay leaves. Such a great Sunday lunch!!
I got my round steak today to make this! My granddaughter is having surgery, and it will be perfect to take to her and her family to help out. I think the kiddos will love it, too. Her husband is an extremely picky eater, but I don't see any reason whatsoever that he wouldn't like this!
This looks delicious! I have a similar recipe. When I first started working, many people swapped recipes and Swiss steak was one of them. There used to be a steak you could buy called Swiss steak. Haven't seen it in years, but round steak works as well. Just mix an envelope of Lipton dry onion soup mix with a can of Campbells cream of mushroom soup + 1 can water, cut the steak up into serving-size pieces, put all this in the Corelle dish and bake for 2.5 hours at 325 F or until steak is tender. (The mushroom soup, water and dry onion soup mix make a delicious gravy.) Not necessary to fry before baking. It is wonderful! I've made this for the last 50+ years! Of course, serve with mashed potatoes, corn (or vegetable of your choice) and rolls. Try is sometimes. It's wonderful.
@@janetannhamdepalma736 I've used it many times (also used here in the "So-Tender Swiss Steak" recipe). If it's fixed in the oven, as I suggested, it is not tough.
I'm so thankful for the time you take to explain the steps. As tou explained how to test the oil with a pinch of flour, i had a "aha" moment lol when i make chicken piccatta sometimes the breading falls off to the bottom of my oil or butter...now i know why 😁 Tyank you for having a teacher's heart for some of us whi are still learning how to cook 🤗 Love you both and may God bless you always in Jesus name ❤️❤️
I startedaking this 45 years ago when Corelle was popular. It's those dishes that make it so tender. I still use them. They will make any meat cut with a fork.
My grandmother used to cook steak that way; I make it now. We've always just called it "oven steak and gravy". Grandmother used a small, enamelware roaster to make hers in. I make mine in an enameled pan like the one you fried your steaks in. Grandmother served hers with mashed potatoes and either green beans or butterbeans, I like it with mashed potatoes and peas and carrots.
I made this today. I really enjoy your easy to make and tasty recipes. Your Chicken Pot Pie Casserole is also delicious. I appreciate your work. Please keep it up.
🎉🎉🎉I just received my copy of your cookbook! It is gorgeous!! I’m getting ready to fix a glass of iced tea and sit down to enjoy! Thank you so much for producing such a treasure!!! I feel like you’re my family! Hugs and blessings❤️❤️❤️
Steak and gravey was my favorite meal as a kid. And still is my favorite as an adult. Mom always browned off the Steak in an iron skillet. Then made gravey from the dripings. Add the Steak back and simmered on low for several hours. It cut like soft butter. The only thing I do different now. Is I use a slow cooker to simmer it in. I even still pour the gravey over a slice of bread.
I just made this and now it is in the oven as I await for my husband to arrive home. But my goodness…I wish my kitchen looked as good as yours after! I didn’t realize what a mess I could be. 😂 We absolutely love watching your videos and have made several of your recipes! God bless you both!
I can't wait to make that! I have never made Swiss Steak and I am 75. My mother made it but she never let me in the kitchen to learn her recipes. I think she put mushrooms in it but they were probably canned ones, yuk. Do you ever add mushrooms? Was waiting for a recipe like yours. Thanks Tom and Melissa
This is pretty much the same way I fix mine I have put it in the oven but most of the time I fix it on the stove top or crock pot and we just call it round steak n gravy and let it cook in that gravy for a few hours best meal ever.. I make my gravy right after I brown the steak and it just cooks in the gravy and I have added green peppers to mine hubby loves them me not so much... Looks amazing and making me hungry lol...
I’ve never seen gravy made like this! I love it! So much easier than the way I was taught to make gravy! This recipe looks so delicious might have to give it a try for Sunday dinner!
This looks soooo good! It's a fancier version of a recipe my family makes with round steak. I wondered if you guys had that steak trimmed/specially cut? Those were some good looking pieces of meat! Thanks for sharing this yummy looking dinner. Take care! 💖
I love this! My mom made it using cubed steak, so that’s what I’ve used. Now I know how to use the round steak! Meat and gravy is my most favorite food ever!!! Thanks for the recipe….😀 ❤-Brenda
My parents use to make swiss steak. But they used tomato sauce into the gravy. It was delicious! I'm going to try your version of it. It looks very good.
Ok, I'm so getting the stuff I don't have so I can make this tonight..... 😋 Yum, haven't had swiss steak since I was around 10 yrs old, I'm 60, we were real poor growing up and couldn't afford beef, I think Mom made it once. We ate usually fish, deer, chicken, turkey at thanksgiving and Christmas. Military and 5 kids. Mom came from a lg family and her dad was a truck driver and never home. there were 6 kids in her family, she was the oldest, they ate a lot of beans and cornbread. So she didn't get to cook a lot of different things. I'm a self taught cook, and Mom always had me do the baking, only because I was best at it. Thank you for sharing these recipes, I will pass them down to my daughter and granddaughter.❤❤
I sure hope you two enjoyed this meal yesterday. We think it's so good! And how nice of you to make the rice and the mashed potatoes. Everyone was happy that way!
My goodness, i haven't thought of swiss steak in 40 years! Our mom used to make it back in the 70's. It was so good! I'm gonna try this; and thanks for telling us it freezes well. I cook for 1 so it helps to know that freezing will Not ruin it texture wise. I make liver and onions the same way! That's how my grandmother would make it and it was De-Lic-ious!
We are so glad you are going to try it again! We hope you enjoy it like you did all those years ago. Thank you so much for watching our channel! Have a great day!
Wow, I can't wait to try this version of your Swiss steak. We've always made a tomato Swiss steak. My mom made the best. We never used the round steak like you are. We always used minute steak or cubed steak. I can't wait to try your version. It sounds delicious. Just to let you know. I'm already subscribed. I always like, save, and share.
We had swissed steak tonight. very similar. Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, salt and fresh cracked pepper, beef Bouillion, a package of frozen bell peppers and onions, crushed garlic, And at a late stage a can of mushrooms. Oh, and a half cup of cheap red box wine. Turned out very well. I had mine over bread with a side of chilled tomatoes (ours) and cucumbers (store) with oil, fresh basil. vinegar and a bit of salt. Oh, so good.
Just made this steak recipe for our Sunday home group. Everyone really enjoyed this dish! Thank you! My mother would put ketchup, then onion and bell pepper slices and slow cook the steak. She did not make a gravy. This is a nice addition to my recipe box! We really enjoy your program!
Hi, Tom & Melissa! Today, I made your So Tender Swiss Steak! It was so delicious! And it was fork tender. My husband loved it! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
I'm of Viking and Italian DNA. This is more reminiscent of my Swedish Ancestry Meatballs with Brown Gravy. The Minnesota Family Story was upon arrival from Sweden about 1850 they survived in Grass Covered Dugouts. And in their first year during Blizzards they beat grass from the dugout ceiling with rocks into powder. Then mixed it with "mush" to form their meatballs. Whereas my Sicily / Milano Italian family used stewed tomatoes, Lots of Mushrooms from the hills ( often dried ) , Garlic, Basil, and of course plenty of Wine. (Both versions including Onions). Using any meat available.... Chicken, Oxen, Horse, Goat, Beef, Mutton, lord knows "what else "....But I remember Pigeons and Robins being mentioned...etc. I remember my late Mother always preferring the Italian version. And it had to be slow cooked on the woodstove in a Cast Iron Dutch Oven. Equal amounts of White and Zinfandel Wine from the family Sonoma Vineyards from 1880 to prohibition. That is until advent of Crock Pots. Which I think was early 1970s. Just when I believe I have most all my family recipes all into PDF files I just discovered another.... ""Sweet Sardine Spaghetti from Sicily "" - the sweet being Brown Sugar or Honey- whatever was available.
We eat smothered steak a lot. And it's so wonderful. I haven't had a roux gravy like that in so long. My husband has diabetes so, we have to use arrowroot slurry to make gravy thick. My MawMaw used to make good yummy stuff like that all the time. I sure miss it.
It's so nice that something as simple as a recipe can bring to mind sweet people in our lives. We appreciate so much that you are watching our channel.
Looks good, I am definitely trying it. Love the red skillet, where do I buy one please 😊 I have a large casserole just like yours it’s very old like me 73
I just made this yesterday. I did add bell peppers with the onion layers, and I cooked it in the crock pot as we were going to be gone most of the day, so cooked it on low all day. OH MY GOODNESS!!! This was so good. Definitely will be making this again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤❤
Thank you for this recipe , my husband recently found out he is diabetic and as much as I love sugar and sweets and goodies, I can’t bake that way anymore so thank you. This recipe looks delicious.
We do a dish very similar to this using cube steaks. We do make a gravy first from our pan drippings from frying the steaks and pour it over the fried cube steaks and then into the oven at 350 for just over an hour. The cube steaks come out fall apart tender and is perfect with mashed potatoes. It's so good!
It looks great! Thanks for sharing!! I'm going to make this using a few less dishes. Once you remove the steaks, use the styrofoam plates for dredging. Put newspaper under it to help with spill over and clean up. Use your frying pan to make the gravy. All the fond is there, all the flavors! Now serve in the baking dish or frying pan. (Put the frying pan in the fridge while cooking the meat, reducing bacterial growth.). Add the excess flour to make the gravy! No waist easy clean up!
Your channel and the recipes you teach us makes me so happy Thank you 😊 We will definitely give this one a try ... Sending you both my love and strength in your day to day and in the kitchen 🧑🍳👩🍳 You and your wife are both lovely together ❤
I made it but used a trick my mom used to make the gravy look more appealing. Just add a dash of Kitchen Bouquet, which browns gravies and savory dishes. But the flavor and tenderness were outstanding!
Tom's favorite baking dish looks like my Mom's Corningware by Corelle from the '70s. When I looked some up, it's both scarce & expensive. Whatever you do, don't drop it! Lol Thank you for this recipe show...🇺🇸 👍☕
We rarely have beef because my family is full of hunters and I always have venison in my freezer. I often substitute venison for beef in recipes, and that’s what I did with this one. I used steak from a big old buck, which is usually pretty tough, and it was so tender and had a good flavor. This is definitely a keeper!
Thank you so much for letting us know that it worked well with venison. My dad and brother are big into hunting, so we always had venison in our freezer too. The beauty of cooking low and slow is that it does tenderize the meat so much. It's great having you at the table with us. We really appreciate that you are watching.
Looks so delicious. I live alone, so this looks like a lot of food. Maybe I can try to cut it in half. I think freezing all that might be too much. Idk going to try it. Thanks for sharing. I would truly be honored to come sit at your table. My dad, thank God did most of the cooking until he married my step mom. I really enjoy your videos, brings back memories of my dad in the kitchen. God bless you both.

Oh my gosh. I did the very same thing - the gravy over a piece of bread for "dessert" . Such good comfort food memories!
Another great recipe. Thank you Tom and Melissa❤
Can’t wait to try this! If we have left over Swiss steak, I add sour cream to make it into a beef stroganoff. So good! Thank you for this recipe!
I just made this and now it is in the oven as I await for my husband to arrive home. But my goodness…I wish my kitchen looked as good as yours after! I didn’t realize what a mess I could be. 😂 We absolutely love watching your videos and have made several of your recipes! God bless you both!
Your channel is my go to recipe ideas and I have never been disappointed! Thank you!
I don't know why I've never made Swiss Steak. I made yours, and it's out of this world. Thank you both!
I will definitely make this!!! Thank you for sharing ♥️♥️ for you both ♥️♥️
Looked great Tom and Melissa, we can see why it's a favorite. Thanks for sharing with us. Fred.
Thank you, Fred. We hope you get to try this soon. It's delicious!
When I make that dish, I use cube steak, but I'm going to try this next time I make it. I love all your dishes.keep it up. We all love you..
Thank you so much for this recipe! Finally a swiss steak without glorified hamburger meat called steak!
Thank you for this great recipe! I have been looking for Swiss steak without tomatoes. This fits the bill! Yummy 😋
I have looked for years for a tomato gravy that you would put on your meat loaf after plating it. No lumps of tomatoes in it. Thank you!!
Well. , you have done it again. A big time Home Run.!!!! Thank you so much again for sharing this family favorite recipe. 💙💚💛🧡❤
This looks soooo good! It's a fancier version of a recipe my family makes with round steak. I wondered if you guys had that steak trimmed/specially cut? Those were some good looking pieces of meat! Thanks for sharing this yummy looking dinner. Take care! 💖
Alright, now I’m hungry.
lol.
Looks delicious folks. Thank you for another great video.
God bless.
I love this! My mom made it using cubed steak, so that’s what I’ve used. Now I know how to use the round steak! Meat and gravy is my most favorite food ever!!!
Thanks for the recipe….😀
❤-Brenda
You are very welcome, Brenda. This is such a nice meal. We appreciate that you are watching our channel.
I can't wait to try this recipe! Round Steak is going on the grocery list now 😊😋
I love that you use your moms dish every time you make this 😊
Another amazing looking recipe and video! Tom took an extra big bite…Told me everything I need to know, it’s delicious!
My parents use to make swiss steak. But they used tomato sauce into the gravy. It was delicious! I'm going to try your version of it. It looks very good.
God bless you great meal
We are delighted that you are going to be making this meal and passing along our recipes to your family. Thank you very much for being at our table.
@@comesitatmytable9044 I'm making it right now and it smells really good! Only thing, hubby wanted rice and I wanted mashed potatoes, I made both!
I sure hope you two enjoyed this meal yesterday. We think it's so good! And how nice of you to make the rice and the mashed potatoes. Everyone was happy that way!
@@comesitatmytable9044 it will be a recipe I'll be making! It was so good, and tender!
Made this for my roommates and I for Sunday dinner....I made buttered noodles to put it over and it was amazing! Thank you! Love your channel!❤
Oh, I want to make this. I recently tried another Swiss steak recipe I got from another channel, and my husband hated it. This sounds good!
Yummy different way to cook steak😊
I haven't made Swiss steak in decades. You've inspired me to make it again. Thank you :)
I’ve never had Swiss Steak before, so I can’t wait to try this.
It's a nice meal. We appreciate that you are with us at the table.
Thank you! Another wonderful video!
We appreciate that! It's great to have you at the table with us.
Sounds great! Thank you so much for watching our channel. Hope you have a wonderful rest of the evening.
Love the red skillet, where do I buy one please 😊 I have a large casserole just like yours it’s very old like me 73
I got a set of three 54 years ago for a wedding gift. Still look new. Love them.
I got a dish like it for a wedding present over 56 years ago. They still work great & i love mine too,
Me too lol
His pan is Le Creuset
@@elizabethbaldwin8488thank you
This looks delicious! I’m going to try your recipe. I make my Swiss steak with cube steaks, tomato sauce and green peppers, etc.
Thanks 🙏 for such a fantastic recipe.
Love 💕 and Hugs. 💙💙💙
Yep I'm trying this. Made it all the time for a church group I catered to
We appreciate that you are going to try it out. Thanks so much for being at the table with us.
YUM!! Definitely going to try this too!! ❤❤
My family liked it so much that I’m making it for my Dad and Mom for Father’s Day tomorrow!!!
Looks delicious 😋 ❤😊
Thank you. We hope you try it soon!
Another success !!! I made this today and it is delicious !!! Thank You Tom & Melissa 💙❤
You are so welcome. We are delighted that you have made it. It's one of our favorites. It's always so tender and delicious.
My grandmother made Swiss Steak and I remember the Corning Ware dishes as well.
Thank you for this recipe , my husband recently found out he is diabetic and as much as I love sugar and sweets and goodies, I can’t bake that way anymore so thank you. This recipe looks delicious.
I'm so sorry about his diagnosis. It's a tough disease. We really do appreciate that you are at the table with us.
Steak looks delicious. I just love gravy.
A definite must try!❤
It looks great! Thanks for sharing!! I'm going to make this using a few less dishes. Once you remove the steaks, use the styrofoam plates for dredging. Put newspaper under it to help with spill over and clean up. Use your frying pan to make the gravy. All the fond is there, all the flavors! Now serve in the baking dish or frying pan. (Put the frying pan in the fridge while cooking the meat, reducing bacterial growth.). Add the excess flour to make the gravy! No waist easy clean up!
Those sound like some efficient ideas! Thanks for sharing with us. We appreciate that you are watching our channel.
I have used your tender switch steak recipe on well trimmed venison round steak came out excellent
Made this for supper tonight. Absolutely delicious, the smell while it was baking was awesome. Thanks for this recipe.
I had forgotten about this. My mom used to make it, and it's good!!!❤😊
Hey from South Carolina, that swiss steak looks amazing! I'm goin to try this one!❤
Yummy! Here in TN we call that steak & gravy. Swiss steak is made with onions, green peppers & tomato sauce.
Your channel and the recipes you teach us makes me so happy Thank you 😊 We will definitely give this one a try ...
Sending you both my love and strength in your day to day and in the kitchen 🧑🍳👩🍳
You and your wife are both lovely together ❤
I made it but used a trick my mom used to make the gravy look more appealing. Just add a dash of Kitchen Bouquet, which browns gravies and savory dishes. But the flavor and tenderness were outstanding!
Yum!! Looks so delicious! 😊
Haven't had Swiss steak and gravy in years! This looks absolutely delicious!
Tom's favorite baking dish looks like my Mom's Corningware by Corelle from the '70s. When I looked some up, it's both scarce & expensive. Whatever you do, don't drop it! Lol
Thank you for this recipe show...🇺🇸 👍☕
It's definitely been around a while. We use it often. Now that you've told us this, we may be nervous using it next time!
Thank you so much. We do hope you enjoy this recipe. We are grateful for your comment.
Can't wait to try this!! Love your videos!! Thank you so much! Bless you & your family!
You are so welcome! We really enjoy this recipe and we are so happy you’re going to try it. Enjoy!
Tom should have listened to you about starting the oil, just saying. Lol
I’m adding this to my rotation list, thanks again.
