  • My name is Xanthe Wyse.
Beginning of this video was what I was doing anyway, which is improvised dance movement to music on a loop (Take On Me - Aha). It helped to regulate mood so I felt less exhausted than I did earlier. Mood is basically energy and bipolar is a mood disorder. Improvised activities to music play a huge role in mood regulation for me.
I became aware I was speaking faster than usual in this video, which clinicians call 'pressure of speech'. When mild like here, can be indication of elevated mood (hypomania), as also went off on tangents at times too. Given that I am also feeling restless and exhausted, I am probably experiencing a mood episode currently, mixed features. It can seem similar to ADHD when I am like this, although ADHD has been ruled out of me, as I lack the childhood criteria.
My main diagnoses are bipolar affective disorder (type 1, which has full mania) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD, avoidance and shutdown presentation). Meds and therapy have helped manage these.
Also noted by a psychiatrist to have clinicially significant autism spectrum features, meeting criteria for PDD-NOS under DMS-IV but not ASD under DSM-V (New Zealand uses both).
Main historical diagnosis was major depressive disorder, MDD, which was changed to a bipolar disorder diagnosis (bipolar has episodes of elevated, depressed and mixed moods). Mixed features is some symptoms of depression and hypomania or mania at the same time.
In this video, I say what burnout can feel like (I always feel burnt out in mixed mood episodes or after coming down from highs). Mood is extremes of energy. With bipolar, I have challenges with energy regulation.
Burnout isn't depression but shares some features. Burnout is more like feeling extreme mental and physical fatigue yet I can like in this video, still be restless. Anyone can experience burnout after times of prolonged stress, whereas clinically significant mood episodes are experienced by those with mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, cyclothymia.
Some of the main ways I get through burnout is to try get balance:
try get enough sleep (meds and exercise help)
drink plenty of water (flush out toxins) and try eat something half-decent each day (I eat more chocolate when under more stress)
have hibernation time (I tend to curl up in my bed for a while, peace and quiet)
movement to music - helps with pain a lot (as I get fibromyalgia flareups with mixed episodes and when burnt out and when depressed). I try go for a walk most days (music helps) as some fresh air helps me breath better and the exerciseat my page helps my mental and physical fitness. Exercise is always at my pace, pushing myself a little each time. Music helps distract from pain and fatigue and I may feel euphoric.
