It is so good to watch this again 9 months later - especially Chris's comments about wanting a Troopy with and Auto box and either a V6 or the Prado engine - and then Ronny expressing his reservations, and now he has that exact vehicle and loves it! 😃
We had a 120 prado for 8 years and did numerous trips in it, and well we never went full blown rock crawling or mud driving but we did heaps of beach and bush tracks and never got bogged once.
I’ve had my 2010 prado for 10 years now and love it taken me everywhere done some long trips with the old girl and it’s been the best bet you dont have a fishing draw 😂😂😂
120 series petrol V6 Prado here.. I love this car. It hasnt been without its issues (mostly inherited from the last owner) but at 460,000kms its never left me stranded and still drives great.
I have a petrol 2010 Kakadu and covered 170,000k of which maybe 20,000k of towing a caravan. It has not given any issues whatsoever. Have done a small amount of off road but it is mostly bitumen. By far the best car l have ever owned. Fuel consumption 12 litres per 100, but with the van it is around 20.
I had a Prado 120 before my current 76 series. No traction control or lockers on the Prado and it was more capable than my 76. Only reason I got rid of the 120 was due to the engine being under powered but I believe the 150 has sorted that out.
I owned a 150 series before my 200 series. I upgraded for the engine. The Prado was just as capable off-road with exactly the same tyres and suspension set up. The 200’s real advantage besides power is that it feel even more solidly built and runs bigger tyres giving a little more overall clearance. Anyone who thinks the Prado is a pretend 4WD has never been off-road with one.
TLC 150 with 2 inch lift and you can go where ever you want. Currently most capable and universal vehicle. Hope Toyota will not ruin it for green agenda 🤯

Great review..150 series here…had since new, now at 225k have not had 1 issue, except discovered last night the the spring for the bonnet latch has broken…done plenty of 4wd’ing, towing, camping etc. amazing.
I just bought a new 150 GX so this was great to see, I am even happier with my decision now. The GX is such a good blank canvas, I'll be getting it ready for our travels - a big lap in 2 years time.

@@stevezodiac575 I went with the Kakadu. I won’t be doing suspension, bull bar, roof rack, awning, drawers. Keeping it light weight. A great daily driver. Getting 8.9litres/100km after 20,000kms.
@@oggyoggy1299 Indeed the Kakadu is a great daily driver, and a lovely vehicle - I hope you also take advantage of the KDSS off-road. Interesting to note, the payload of the Kakadu is 110kg less than that of the GX. So if touring, or especially towing, one has to keep a watch on the weights.
G'day Ronny, good video and thanks for the update on the build, just one comment about the Prado being a a wagon on a Hilux chassis. This is not true, the closest vehicle to the Prado is the FJ cruiser. The Hilux is close to the Fortuna. Cheers and thanks for the video.
The biggest problem with Prados is the lack of space. That kitchen really looks like it helps make the best use of the smaller back area. In the space that sits, we just have a fridge, although it is 100 litres but I think it would be worth going back to 60 just to have that functionality.
Kind of need to agree in parts about the troopy with a 6 cylinder motor. It would appeal to me much more than the current 8. I have driven the 8 remotely for years but when it comes down to it fuel economy is important and the power difference is negligible if any. Probably still stick with a manual though but that’s me.
Prado 120/GX470 owner here. Pretty reliable with aftermarket 2.5" shocks/rear coil spring conversion since 120,000 mi. I had my front wheel bearings wearing out at 200,000 mi (321,869km), many gas cap seal replacements, and outer tie rods replaced at 200,000mi. The famous cracked dash was replaced under the Lexus warranty back in 2017. Other than that, it's been a solid family vehicle and a overland tourer. The 2UZ V8 has plenty of power. Only downside is the fuel economy but still manageable at 16mpg with 32" all terrain tires and roof rack.
running 235/80 R17 on my 2018 Prado. Workes very well even the car is very heavy with 3240kg. The 6. Gear is being used very well on highway so you can go with low rpm.

doesnt the VX have electric fold in mirrors? hahahaha! My older 2010 VX has KDSS.... that's a BIG sale item for me. I really like crawl control too, saves buying front and rear lockers for me.
Just found this channel while looking for Prado information as I am considering one of these. A very informative video. One of my greatest concerns with Toyota is the "Diesel particulate filter" and associated bits as I know of someone caught up in the class action. But unless I missed it, it was not mentioned in this video. Going to watch the rest of the series, as I like the idea taking one of the second row of seats out.
Great content. Gotta ask, with your thoughts on VX v GXL, is there not room for discussion for the VX v GX even given your particular requirements? Personally find the difference between GX, GXL and VX (even Kakadu) are primarily aesthetic with exception to the diff. Happy to be proven wrong though.
I think the same as you…I didn’t need the 3rd row seats which is why I bought a GX. $7k less than a GXL and $17k less than a VX. For less than $3k I can put a locker in, that can be used in low or high range and independent of the TC
Good detailed video. What is the current weight of the vehicle ? Do you even know ? Considering all the accessories, water and equipment etc that you carry on this vehicle there is no way it is even close to GVM, so no insurance.
It might be under GVM. I've got a 2014 GXL 150 kitted out with bullbar, snorkel, RTT, 100L of water, fridge, drawer system etc etc and it weighs in at 2910Kg full of fuel, full of food/beer, full of water with 2 people on board. So it is possible. VX will be a bit heaver with all that 'tat' on board though.
@@spudboy1328 I would quite happily be proven wrong but the facts and figures just don't stack up. VX Prado 2385kg unladen, GVM 2990kg so 605kg plus the weight of the removed third row and single rear seat to work with. Fuel, water and tank, roof rack & 270 awning, suspension upgrade, rear tow hitch, bull bar & side steps, winch, spotlights, communication equipment, additional battery and electrical system including inverter, kitchen/fridge slide (without fridge, cooker or utensils is 70kg as per the manufacturer) plus additional draw, coffee machine, fold down rear door shelf, storage box in place of removed single rear seat. Then add a full fridge, additional food, cooker and utensils, cutlery, etc clothing, swag, cameras, accessories and charging equipment, tools and spares, driver and other things I've probably missed. I have a HZJ105 which has a higher payload to work with and while I have plenty of accessories, I don't have half the stuff on this vehicle. I prefer to camp with just the basics, that's just me. Even so, with a full vehicle ( fuel & and what I usually take camping ) myself (74kg) and the wife (52kg) I'm only 70 - 50kg under GVM as per the free VicRoads scales north bound on the Hume Hwy just past Broadford, which I check my vehicle on each time just for peace of mind.
@20:50 "lots of people would love an auto (in a Troopy)" "or put this engine in" Ronny: "I'm not sure how that engine would go in a Troopy" so Ronny; what do you think now?
Blows my mind that these get such bad mileage... Ive got a KZN165R with a full ARB Bar, winch, steel roof rack, rear steel bar, arb canopy, complete drawer system, dual battery system, solar panel,40L fridge, 2 spares full of gear on 31s and 120L of diesel in a long range steel tank and i get mid 10s on the HWY and mid 11s around town.....and the 1KZ has over 280,000kms on it.
If you like having 6th gear anything above 31.5inch you can say goodbye to it. In manual I have no clue as you have to order them from Toyota. You can just buy one from a dealership without placing an order
If i was setting up any land cruiser off roading australia or the world 15-16 inch rims max once you start getting into the 17 inch and above you are typically chopping shit just to fit the tires you need because the only thing available are radials (on road {tarmac or maintained gravel/clay based roads.}) For me whilst I do like the prado as a platform with caviat as long as as long as you don't grace 5'8"-5'9" you are fine to sit behind the wheel get towards 6'-6'2" you get into the region of needing a 60,70, 8- series chassis
I don't think you can fit anything smaller than a 17" or 18" rim on the Prado, otherwise you hit the brake calliper, and a lot of modern 4WDs have that same problem.
@@KarlEller there are ways and means of doing things, when you are wanting footprint on beach and telly tracks you have modify to suit.. otherwise you're cutting into chassis to fit tires not designed to go under those wheel arches 16 inch might be passable to a certain size otherwise you are between 14-15 inch rims for air down pretty much at 17 inch and up are tarmac ONLY... AS YOU DON'T HAVE THE WALL CLEARANCE FOR OFF ROAD USE..
@@jasonhowe1697 wrong. Been running a 33 inch muddies on my 17 inch rims on my Prado for years. Very basic modification of removing front mud flaps only. No rubbing and bottoming out whatsoever. You will not clear brakes with anything less than a 17 inch rim on a 150 series prado. Lots of people running the same set up as me.
We had a 2009 diesel VX and now a 2015 VX petrol which has the advantage of KDSS and 6 speed auto. The petrol is a much better driving experience but on both cars the cruise control is bloody terrible, changes down 2 gears and revs its box off to maintain 110kph on what feels like the slightest hill.
Have a look at my Prado review video
I think the same as you…I didn’t need the 3rd row seats which is why I bought a GX. $7k less than a GXL and $17k less than a VX. For less than $3k I can put a locker in, that can be used in low or high range and independent of the TC
@@Ronny_Dahl if you don't mind where and how much for the kitchen??
Can you tell more about the kitchen? Ho makes those? Where to buy.
Also interested to know where I can get one from and if they make them for the 76
Just watched your video. Wondering where is the Swiss army kitchen made from
Please advise
Great review!
What make are the seat covers please?
You’ll love the 2024 troopy then
2.8 and 6 speed auto
Still the best kitchen in the game
Great content brother 👍👏
@20:50 "lots of people would love an auto (in a Troopy)"
"or put this engine in"
Ronny: "I'm not sure how that engine would go in a Troopy"
so Ronny; what do you think now?
Who is the manufacturer of the rear kitchen/drawers please ?
Man, I want that kitchen for my FJ.
But reverse
Great episode 👍🤟
2024 and the 2.8L 70 series is now a reality
Who makes those wool seat covers?
awesome vid. what seat covers are these ?
THANK YOU FOR OTHER GREAT VIDEO AS TRUE GREAT WATCHING ALL TIMES
Blows my mind that these get such bad mileage...
Ive got a KZN165R with a full ARB Bar, winch, steel roof rack, rear steel bar, arb canopy, complete drawer system, dual battery system, solar panel,40L fridge, 2 spares full of gear on 31s and 120L of diesel in a long range steel tank and i get mid 10s on the HWY and mid 11s around town.....and the 1KZ has over 280,000kms on it.
What brand are those seat covers?
There is just no reason not to buy a Prada unless you really have to want a 200/300 series. Great cars!
Don't accidently buy a Prada when shopping for Prado. I learnt the hard way.
Yea no v8😂
😅😅😅@@TDubya811
21min mark. 12 Months later and Ronnie has a 2.8 70 series.
Fantastic review, honest and real world and it shows, keep up the great work. Is your TV show on in QLD?
I didn't think you could get a GVM upgrade on 150 prado ?
What model swag are they?
why 33s will ruin the car? and do you feel the difference of the 6th gear on a manual transmission?
If you like having 6th gear anything above 31.5inch you can say goodbye to it. In manual I have no clue as you have to order them from Toyota. You can just buy one from a dealership without placing an order
What model year prado is it?
what is the brand name of sheepskin seat and centre arm rest covers. I would like to get some
Yeah I also want one of these
engine 2700cc ?
Who makes the skins for the body?
Rhinohide
If i was setting up any land cruiser off roading australia or the world 15-16 inch rims max once you start getting into the 17 inch and above you are typically chopping shit just to fit the tires you need because the only thing available are radials (on road {tarmac or maintained gravel/clay based roads.})
For me whilst I do like the prado as a platform with caviat as long as as long as you don't grace 5'8"-5'9" you are fine to sit behind the wheel get towards 6'-6'2" you get into the region of needing a 60,70, 8- series chassis
I don't think you can fit anything smaller than a 17" or 18" rim on the Prado, otherwise you hit the brake calliper, and a lot of modern 4WDs have that same problem.
@@KarlEller there are ways and means of doing things, when you are wanting footprint on beach and telly tracks you have modify to suit..
otherwise you're cutting into chassis to fit tires not designed to go under those wheel arches 16 inch might be passable to a certain size otherwise you are between 14-15 inch rims for air down
pretty much at 17 inch and up are tarmac ONLY...
Has anyone found a fix for that?
How much does it weigh on a trip ?
Once you don't daily a Prado I'd think a 76 would be much better.
nice
My tuned amarok was getting under 10L/100km with a big rooftop, fully loaded, towing a jet ski, 315 wide tyres, bars, lift
Go 34" tyres. But change the gearing to get the same rev range & correct the speedometer. & get reduction gears in the transfer case to make it crawl over all the rocky terrain
🤑🤑🤑
What has happened to Torbs
Swags on the Roof....................I'm surprised nobody uses their RearBar as a SwagHolder or Carried them on top of the SpareTyre(s).........
There's an idea
