  • About this collection
Discover the roots of British working class traditions, remember some real working class heroes, and see how lives and attitudes have changed over the years by watching and listening to BBC programmes.
Programmes chosen from over 60 years of broadcasting reveal the changing ways in which the working class have been depicted by the media.
This collection was created in partnership with BBC Two's 'White' season, which explored the current challenges facing the white working class.

How working-class celebrities like Twiggy became fashionable?
    Synopsis
This edition of 'Man Alive' is a veritable roll-call of 1960s working-class stars. Here they reveal their thoughts and feelings upon meeting royalty, how accents are now less of a hindrance in establishing credentials, and the ways in which being famous is changing their lives. We also meet Twiggy's very proud and equally down-to-earth mum!
    Did you know?
Alan Aldridge, who appears in the programme, created the film poster for Andy Warhol's movie 'Chelsea Girls', for which there was briefly a warrant for his arrest. Justin de Villeneuve, born Nigel Jonathan Davies, enjoyed a "very luxurious war" as an evacuee at the home of JB Priestley, who dined with the children in his care every Sunday night. "There was silver at meal times. It gave me a taste for better things."

In NZ, this came on about 9pm on a weeknight, I was usually in bed by then, still in primary school - considered an adult show. Allowed to watch it later on as a teenager. The iconic theme tune it always guaranteed an interesting look at life in Britain at the time - your kitchen-sink doco when the BBC was good. Other shows that were popular were 'Whicker's World', 'World in Action'. Good memories; good programmes.

What a fascinating and intriguing insight this video is into working-class celebrities, especially the section regarding Twiggy and her then-boyfriend Justin de Villeneuve - who when in public always came across as being very Middle-Class, but was in fact from a poor working-class background and had practiced hard to attain the illusion of grandeur. Absolutely riveting stuff - thanks very much for seeking out the film footage out and sharing - absolutely priceless - little wonder we all Love Twiggy!!

Anybody who works for a living is working class . Just because one wears a suit and works in an office .and one wears tee shirt and jeans and works in construction doesn't mean one is better than the other . They are both working class I hate snobby or people who think they are better than everybody else. Who do they think they are mrs bucket (whoops I mean buquay)

"Class" is a misnomer. People are born into circumstances that best reflect their karma and consciousness.
