With that much clogging I would imagine you are going to need a radiator and a water pump before long as well. Both are easy to change. Ask me how I know?!

    That sensor you removed from the block drain, is a "knock" sensor for ignition timing. It is recommended to install a new one, and it does require a torque spec. New sealant on the threads and/or not torqueing will compromise its sensitivity.

    • @NoNonsenseKnowHow
      @NoNonsenseKnowHow  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Oh okay. Thanks for that info! I'll go ahead and probably order one because the plastic is broken on it too

    • @kevin9c1
      @kevin9c1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@NoNonsenseKnowHow The ECM does a knock test which involves checking to make sure that knock sensor responds. If it doesn't it will throw a code and pull a ton of advance. So yes recommend a new AC Delco and install exactly the factory way.

    • @deanmeyers1690
      @deanmeyers1690 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Back in the OBD-I days, that sensor was added to "feel" the low frequency vibration associated with "spark knock". There is,, inaudible, and audible spark knock. Audible spark knock, as you know will burn a hole in the piston,, but inaudible spark knock will pound the upper half of the rod bearing out.
      That's (in a way,) kind of a bonus we got from OBD-I . The computer as forementioned in another comment, will throw as much advance at the timing as it can until it "feels" inaudible spark knock. So with OBD-I your engine will run a-bit cooler and make a-bit more power with premium fuel over low-test fuel. On OBD-II it doesn't matter because it controls more parameters than Its predecessor.

    • @kevin9c1
      @kevin9c1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@deanmeyers1690 What I described happens very briefly the first time you engage Performance Enrichment mode on an ignition cycle. This ECM and in general OBD-I cars do NOT try to run timing on the ragged edge using only knock detection to keep things under control. The intent of the calibration (with a properly functioning engine and the correct octane) will NOT need to retard any timing. It's there for protection. Also, it will pull timing more aggressively so if you are riding the knock sensor all the time, you are not getting optimal performance and should reduce base timing (in a GM TBI particularly). Or there is something wrong like carbon build up.

    • @deanmeyers1690
      @deanmeyers1690 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry Bud; I didn't intend to start a confusing discussion over the sensor,, just merely explaining what's a proper repair and that it does more than plug a water leak. Enjoy the holiday weekend.

    I think that ambulance would make a great mechanic's rig. Organize it right and you could still have room for a cot.

    Ran straight water in my 94’ for awhile since it had a leak I was putting off fixing. Needless to say, lots of rust ensued. Ran some CLR thru it, and drained it. Looked like a rust milkshake going down the driveway, down the block. Put a aftermarket diesel coolant filter in-line on the heater hose and ran that for a few months. Cleaned all that sediment out like a champ.

    Waiting for new shop!!
    Curious if there are any setbacks needed, plans, permit$....etc, etc.
    We went through a burocratic permit nightmare recently.

    Absolutely love the old Burbans, brings back alot of memories, you did a great job on flushing and cleaning everything out. I'm big on maintenance and I would have done the exact same thing and start fresh. That truck is an absolute dimond and if I were you I would be keeping that one only cause when are you ever going to find another one that clean and free of rust like that.. Just my opinion, this one has me thinking of going to the bank tuesday and sending you some cash cause I'm in love and already have ideas of what I would do with it.. clean truck, you did the right thing with changing all fluids.. great video, much respect chris, happy memorial day and thank you for all you do brother!!

    Suburbans are great. I had an 86 I bought new for $19K. My kids loved it. Three row seating, rear AC. It would pass everything except a gas station. This one is a gem and hope you keep it and fix everything!, Well done!!

    Hey Chris, thanks for another awesome video brother. I was wondering, when you were checking the ignition timing did you disconnect the single wire connector near the distributer itself? You, Jen and Gus have a nice Memorial Day weekend, you guys stay safe. Thank you to all of our military service men and women. God bless you all.

    Fun fact, coolant/antifreeze stops the buildup of all that rust and raises/lowers the boiling point/freezing point.

    I have two 88 Chevy customized vans. Never had trouble with them other than routine service. I have a 91 S10 Blazer 4 dr.. Best little run around vehicle ever.
