  • Daventry Motorfest is an event where all cars are welcome except electric vehicles!!
    In this video I concentrated on the classic & modern cars who are currently concerned about depreciating prices of these types of vehicles .

    Having been in the classic car trade for over 40 years both restoring and selling, I have seen the market place go up and down. The market I would say, has been on a gentle downturn for the last few years. In 2015 to 2017 the market place was on fire and again during lockdown. Since lockdown a multitude of auctions have set up on line selling classics, this in turn opened up buying at auction to a whole new audience. This drove prices ever higher, for auction sales at least ! Hence the auctions have been bucking the downward trend price wise, until I would say early summer 2023. Now even the auctions are not selling at such high prices, other than the odd exception and sales percentages are not as high. Pre-war cars are difficult to sell due to demographics, fifties cars and some sixties cars are also getting harder to sell. Most classics are falling back in price and are taking far longer to sell. I have had a few fast Fords through the door, a corner of the market that has been healthy and even interest in them has fallen away from where it was just 18 months ago. It's high time prices became more affordable for all and within reach of the real enthusiasts.

      Well said, in fact I’ve also noticed classic car sales at auctions attract higher prices due to the fact they are filtered and choosing the best examples to sell

      I always look to the Classic Car Market to predict the economy. It looks loke the economy is in trouble.

      A photo in autotrader etc can be deceptive always wise to look at the car first in person Ageed

      My daily driving car is only 30 years old. All my bikes are over 40.

      Again it’s down to the age of the buyer, if there is a eight year old kid thirteen years ago who loved the look of a SLK or perhaps his Mum, Dad or mates parents had one and fast forward to him or her having a job and a few quid to buy a car the thirteen year old SLK could be there own dream car, and fair play to them. My dream car is a 1989 Ford Orion Ghia i, as my much missed late dad had one.

      @@MX-Mug My dad had an Orion. It was the only car he bought new. I wish I could get hold of it now but I don't have the reg number. It was probably scrapped a long time ago.

    He would like to own a TR7 - that says it all , why is it all about value and price - Very many people travel the country going to football matches and all their money lost without any return ! if you get your money back when selling a classice car then your hobby has cost you very little !

    As one of the organisers of this event, I would like to thank you for sharing this video. I am sure you will have noticed that it was more than just a classic car show, rather a celebration of all motor vehicles. The youngest car on display was 4 yrs old and then we had 2 at 109 yrs, with vehicles from a scooter to the helicopter. My Mercedes, at tha back, is only 21 yes old, I love her and, like most of the enthusiasts there, do not want to sell her or make a profit. Once again, thank you for the video and I look forward to seeing you at the next show.

      I've been driving (with a clean licence) for 61 years. I've raced for most of that time too. I was brought up with classic, vintage and veteran cars and my dailty driver is a "modern classic", a 2006 Lexus GS300 SE-L. I've owned this car for 3 years and it's current worth is around 3 times its purchase price! I buy and sell a few modern classics and, to be fair, I've found that, so long as I'm selective, prices are on the rise; particularly with American cars, trucks and dayvans. Certainly, the vintage and veteran markets are very healthy, with a lot of people turning to cars over 40 years old, to take advantage of VED and MoT exemption and cheap classic insurance.
      A few makes are still very affordable; both to buy and to run. Rover P4, P5b and P6 spring to mind; I recently bought a Rover 110 P4, for under £5,000! It's in show condition and is a delight to drive.
      Austin and Morris are still good value; yet Rileys, Wolesleys and MGs are way out in front.
      It's a funny old : shows as often as I can.

    Ageing enthusiasts selling up and younger people not particularly interested in cars prior to the 70s. is also part of the problem along with many people don't have to skills to repair or service their old cars. The same is happening with motorbikes and even buses.

      I was discussing this same matter 20 years ago tbh with my now late father and uncle - we could all see the writing on the wall even back then , the question is will motor vehicles kind of turn into oil paintings , even if they are aren’t roadworthy or government legislation stops them from being used in anger - what then? Prices will either collapse or soar!

      I should add that cars could be converted to electric ( perish the thought) en masse IF that is the difference between them being parked up in a garage or being driven/ ridden .

    As you say, cars are lasting longer. A 'modern classic' today is older than a 'modern classic' of yesteryear. Today, cars are simply 'old for longer'. In the 1970s, a 5 year old car was hanging in there, a 10 year old was a survivor and a 15 year old car was a winner.

      I'm very thankfully well shot of my Ecoboom. It's not a classic car in any regard - it's a liability!!
      After 4 Fiestas and 3 Mondeos and a Transit, that's me done with Ford. When I rang customer services asking what support I could expect if my (then owned) Fiesta's engine went boom, I was advised to buy a warranty against that happening otherwise I was on my own!!
      This is despite it's parent company ,Ford America, admitting there is a problem and undertaking free reactivation work. Ford Europe has so far not accepted responsibility for the issue and will not stand by their product.
      Disgraceful behaviour, so it's goodbye Ford!

      I wouldn't be so sure, the Tesla Roadsters (built on Lotus Elise chassis) are already getting a bit of a cult status !
      Maintenance of these *may* be such a problem since the details have been released into the public domain.
      Certainly the current lot will never be classics tho' !!!

    My mate sold his TR6 a few years ago. He completely rebuilt it. But he's glad he got his money back. He paid £2500 for it in 1992. It was a Californian import.

    I bought two TR7s in a deal, a hard top and a soft top. My girlfriend and I decided to drive them from London to my lock up in Brighton. The hard top broke down on the A3 in New Malden, so we got a rope and towed it with the convertible. The convertible broke down on the A24, just past Dorking. So there we were, with two broken down TR7s attached by a bit of rope. I had to get the train to Brighton, get my W123 estate out and tow them down to Brighton one at a time. It was a long night and the last time I will ever buy a TR7.

    My 1973 Rolls Royce 2 Door Saloon Coach Built Mulliner Park Ward is 50 years old, its rare, costs me a fortune to run, that alone sorts the men out from the little boys.

    I worked for a British Leyland dealers in late 1970s and the sales staff told me that the hardest car to sell was the TR7.
    It had incredibly heavy steering , terrible rear visibility and was prone to vapour lock, then retailing at at just under £7,000 wasn't cheap

      I once worked for a BL dealer and in the summer of 1982 we sold what was thought to be the last available unused UK model TR7 drophead. It was a dreadful beige colour and had been pre-registered and in stock elsewhere for over a year. I went to collect it and I was most disappointed, it was truly awful to drive, scuttle shake being the thing that I remember most about it. Not a proper sports car by a very long way, the TR6 was the last open car worthy of the Triumph name. (The 4A was my favourite)

    Problem with the SLK170 in the UK is that it has never lived down it's "ladies who lunch" or posh wives image, along with rust. We live in France and have a SLK320, they are much better thought of here and also rust is not the problem it is in the UK (no salted roads). On the most popular sales media here, the cheapest 320 is 7000 euro and the dearest 16,000,
    The UK is a very cheap place to buy used cars, though the corrosion aspect would put me off completely.

      Probably explains why our prices are cheaper than elsewhere it’s because of Rust a lot of Classic cars are imported from Arizona into the U.K.

      Running costs are also high. People don't want to chuck thousands into a car that's not worth very much and probably never will be. Also German cars are a limited market because of the stigma (especially BMWs and Audis.) Thirdly they all look the same. German manufacturers have this fixation with designing the same car over and over again. It's boring.

    Depends on which classic cars you have.
    Good luck getting anything with a ford RS badge on it cheap. Hot hatches from the 80’s are doing well.
    Those mercs are to new, unless you’ve got the software are a pain in the arse. SL 500 AMG is going up.

      Same with things like 1970s Toyota Celica, Datsun 260z, Alfa Spider etc. Desirable cars to many of us but prices are now beyond our wallets.

      Was just here to say the same. I know it depends on the definition of cheap but most RS's can still be bought for under £30k. Escort and 3 door Cosworth / RS500 are higher and the latter now either 6 figures or close. It's what someone is willing to pay at the end of the day but you can see the appeal of the stuff that still commands more money. The MK1 Focus RS is certainly a modern classic and good ones of these are £25k ish. A 2003 SL would have been 3 times the cost when new but now maybe half the price but just not as desirable.

      @@jonnyc5254 That's a matter of choice I would rather have a Mercedes 2003 SL over a Ford MK1 Focus RS. The bottom line is we all like what we like and thats what makes us so passionate about our choice of cars, and of course our budget.😁

    In the US, it is an entirely different market with antiques and classics selling for
    unreal prices. However, I expect the US market to tank by this fall. Most car shows
    in the US now have close to 50% trucks and station wagons that still offer
    daily utility beyond the classic sports car or muscle car.

    Nice show with lots of variety. 👍🙂 Values can be a moving target. EG that (lovely)Jag XJ you mentioned isn't going to be particularly pricey or more widely sought after. On the other hand the Nissan Skyline R34 I see parked beside it? Well they've gone nuts in values over the last two years and continue to climb. GTR versions are 6 figures and very rare variants hitting 7. That example is a four door, but I'd reckon you'd be hard pressed to get it for less than 30k. In general 90's Japanese(particularly JDM only models) performance type cars have _very_ strong values at the moment. That's currently one of the "hot" periods for the 30-50 age group, driven by basic nostalgia, popular culture, films and video games(the latter a biggie) .

      This is very true, the R34 sedan you mention is mine. Would you believe i managed to purchase it back in 2020 just before the prices shot up for a mere £9k !! The car was for sale in Japan at £4.5k and it cost £4k to import it, then a bit more to get it ready for UK roads. £30k would be a life changing amount of money however its really not worth that, not that I'll ever part with it!! £18-20k would be a closer figure, given the rare GTR bodykit, wheels and the Midnight Purple repaint.

    Same thing happening in the classic motorcycle market, probably because we're experiencing a generational shift, as the internal combustion generation is being replaced by the digital generation.

    Depends what you have. Tax free cars are doing well. I have a collection, which I own because I love to drive them. Most have increased in value. I try to avoid cars with a load of ECUs in them. More repairable

      I also avoid cars now with electronics as the parts are not continuing. 40 years and older are the ones.

    I love classic cars and love to watch Bangers and Cash BUT --- people paying huge cash for old Fords could get bitten very badly if they are not careful. But a 13 YO Merc is not my definition of a classic car -- I do get the value proposition though. As Derek does say regularly on Bangers and Cash - when people get old and die that identify with a specific time period of cars the price plummets. At the moment people buying fast Fords of the 80's are my age - early 60's. But in a decade the enthusiasm may have waned..

    I am seeing cars from the 60's and 70's go down in price, but the hotrods of my era are going up in price. I'm a mustang guy, and the foxbody 5.0 LX coupes are gaining in price. My age group 45-55 are getting more and more disposable income as the kids move out of the house. We are starting to look at the cars that were cool when we were teenagers. That would be 5.0 Mustangs, Irocs, ZR1s, GX's from the mid 80's to early 90s. Keeping an eye on future classics is a good idea right now. The HP war that started in 2003 with the Terminator Cobra brought about some cool cars that are becoming more affordable. Shelby GTs, 07-09 GT500s, and 03-04 Cobras are not selling for the crazy prices that they were 2-3 years ago. I think some of that is due to the current crop of factory poney cars are 480+ HP.

      Unfortunately the MG Club should draw a distinction between UK models of old and the Chinese who just picked up the name. Maybe it should be called Classic mg club or something. If it were me I would call it Genuine MG but that might be putting a rather too fine a point on it in this woke dont offend anybody- even dictatorships- age.

    Certain Classic cars upto 1995, specially limited edition models are in demand and prices are going up ie ford bmw merc etc etc

    Great upload, pleased to see a well attended show... only the title is somewhat harsh (somewhat misleading). At the moment DVLA is doing a survey on what constitutes a classic or 'historical relevant' car, only very little is published in the main/public media!!! Biggest problem lies NOT in the (classic) car industry (the overall Historic Vehicle Industry is generating 15% (!!!!) of GDP to the UK), but more due to a next generation that is 'lazy & short sighted & disinterested' in anything (industrial) heritage. Ask any youth in the UK, on any street, what they want out of life: retired millionaire at the age of 30! Dystopic as my petrol hobby might become, my remaining 15 years, I will remain making my surrounding roads unsafe in my originals '34 MG PB, '82 Por 930, Velocette MSS & Venoms... all exempt and very hard worked for... and sometimes a nuisance and sometimes much faster than all modern 'ugly' milk floats in todays traffic...

      In the late eighties I had a HQ LS Monaro (with a 400 chev and 4 speed , so not original), I sold it in 1988 for $8400 , I knew in more recent times that their value had increased a lot , but I didn't know until a few months ago just how much , they all seem to have asking prices of $150,000 to $200,000 , it's crazy.

Actually, when it comes to Monaros, these days I prefer the older model like you had , I remember in 1981 a workmate bought a '69 Monaro 253 ci and auto for $4,500, it was a lot of money then , but in contrast another workmate paid $9,999 for a 318 1970 Dodge Challenger, huge money. 🙂

    This type of thing appeals mostly to people aged 50-60+. There are a lot of people who have stopped collecting and given up the hobby due to old age. Most younger people below 40 simply aren’t interested. In my opinion this is a slowly dying industry / topic (classic cars) asides from the very high end ones

    Sorry. But not sorry. Alot of these owners who think their cars are 'classics' need to give their heads a wobble. It's quite simple. The DVLA gives a vehicle classic status at 40. Anything younger than that is just an old cherished or second car.

      40 is just an arbitrary figure arrived at to qualify a car for VED free status. Before Lousy Labour got in in '98 it had been 25yrs old.

      I still go by the 'old' system and consider a car over 25-30yrs to be classic. If its still running by this point its certainly cared for and loved by someone which is all that matters. In America I believe any car over 25 is considered a Historic Vehicle and can also be imported to the states if it's not domestic. Porsche consider any car in their line up over 20yrs old to be a classic car.

    I find it hard to believe that the older classics with no computers in them are going down in value as the majority of them can be serviced by their owners. Lately Utube has been telling of mechanics leaving the motor trade mainly because of the complexity, cost of tools, and now dangers associated with cars using electric motors.
    Tha same seems to be America, where some of the oldies fetch enormous amounts of $s, whatever condition they're in.! As an old motor enthusiast, if I had my time again, I too would only be interested in pre-computer cars. Many of which look quite modern anyway.!

      Younger people have no feelings for them, just old metal. I was born in 65, it's easy to grasp why older cars mean nothing to people, untill they get to drive them. Preferably open ones on a sunny day with a nice landscape.

    I prefer the 60s and 70s bread and butter cars. Something you can fix up on the driveway, needing no specialist tools. That 13 year old Merc will be full of sensors everywhere. How can anyone young coming into the hobby work on anything like that, in the same manner? Many modern cars just aren't going to reach 40 years. Just too expensive to keep going.

    I manage to keep my classic bricknose on the road despite inching up on 35 years old. Just got the brakes fixed. Yippee - now the pedal doesnt go all the way to the floor half as often as it used to.

    Any and all 1970-80 cars, trucks and 1940's tractors on the farm are expected to work daily...there's no classic rest for them. They pull their daily weight or get crushed.

    I have had a couple of classics, a 1957 100e Anglia in 1991 and into the club scene and later a 1971 Stag in 2002 again into the club scene. Later in life i got well into the MG Zed scene. Had an MGF, ZR and three ZS 180s, two of which i still own. My 2002 car i have owned from 2006 and was my daily family car. Retired in 2012 and SORN as i couldn't part with it, replaced it with a more modern car. Later recomissioned and put onto the show/ club scene. I would call these and others with the 15 to 25 age group ' enthusiasts cars' as opposed to classics. Moving the free road tax from 25 to 40 years hasn't helped prices. ZS 180 now £415 per year which is a piss take when many only do two or three thousand a year to shows/ Sunday afternoon drives etc. I think there is a Goverment agender to get these 'ungreen' cars to the scrapman.

    I think the decline in values will closely align with interest, real investment potential and restoration cost. Many costly cars eg Rolls are too expensive for amateur restorations and way too expensive to pay professionals. Anything from a Shadow on will lose value massively. An MG is a cheap simple very pretty convertible. It will always have value. An Aston after DB6 will devalue massively IMO because of the terrible alloy steel construction. Modern exotics generally will crash in value because the labour costs and the scarcity of mechanics and parts make long term ownership non-viable. The one significant positive is people love classic cars and interest in anything pre 1985 will continue because these cars generally are fixable and they are reflected in popular culture. The 1950s was the beginning not only of rock and roll but really flamboyant affordable design. The 1960s 70s and 80s are equally popular era. And the level of interest world wide in car shows has not diminished.

    10 years ago you couldn't get a decent mga or tr3 for less than 25k. Now they can be found less than 20k. T series MGs same story. Bought a morgan 4/4 (18k) in 2019 because TDs were too pricy. The 4/4 has just about kept its value but you can now get a lovely TD for 15k. Even TCs are sub 20k. Demographics.

    It all depends on the age of the person that is buying a car and what they can relate to, I relate to 70’s and 80’s cars so I would spend a lot on a 80’s Ford, but I can’t relate to a E type or similar, so to me there worth nothing. And as time goes on the people that can still identify with a E type will sadly be dead, and there will be very few buyers.

      I agree, it's cyclical, hence why men (it's mainly men) who loved cars from the 50's and created the demand for them, driving up prices, have sadly passed away, meaning demand fell and prices follow.
      Sixties cars next, then Seventies.
      80's and even 90's cars are in demand now but in time we will all become old boys and pass away.
      It's the way of things, they become popular because as you age you often become more wealthy and able to afford the cars you lusted for in your teenage years. More buyers = inflated prices. Then the customers die off, demand slackens and prices fall.
      I'm looking for my second Minor - wouldn't touch an 80's job!! I reckon that at 65 now, I may just be about the last wave of those seeking Sixties/ mid-Seventies stuff, prices for these is falling everywhere. But it's still not any real compensation for being owld 😂

      Over 40 years old is termed “historic” free VED. The term classic is ambiguous..I mainly have “historic” exception being Alfa Brera which is at present a cheap car, some might say a modern classic.

      In the states its 25 years, and you can insure a classic , depending on the state, as a historical vehicle, for as little as 100 dollars a year.

    MGTF’s and SLK’s are used cars, not classics. They are still in the depreciation cycle. A friend of mine had a TR7 new - it was the most dreadful ownership of her life😂

      Mgf now is over 30 years old it’s the fact that they kept producing these cars for many years after that they are still regarded as not classic .
      Its amazing that the cars that were quite frankly rubbish in their day are now collectible

    People buy these and then realize what it costs to repair even the simplest things. Here in the USA, shops charge $200 to $300 per hour for labor. And then many parts are unobtanium. After owning over 50 classic cars I now only buy new cars with warranties. Unfortunately few fun cars are available. Seems everything is either an SUV or not available with a manual. Sigh…

    “The classic car market has crashed”. Perhaps a little extreme? Like any market, there are fluctuations due to fashion/supply and demand. Would I want to be sat on a car with limited appeal and an aging clientele? Of course not, however, there are plenty of cars, out there, doing the exact opposite. And not just the blue oval stuff.

    Unfortunately manufacturers are discontinuing service for their petrol cars, that's how they take them off the road and clear the market for their EV lineup. Jaguar, Mercedes, BMW no longer fix their petrol models in America, so with any serious problem, that car is off the road.

    I think we are going though a generational change. The generation that got a bike at 16 and car at 17 and fixed it themselves are dyng out. The younger generation coming though now don't have core mechanical skills and they are used to cars that are easy to drive. Like it or not a lot of classics are pretty awful to drive. Its very interesting to see which cars are breaking the generation barrier and which are not and I think its a very suprising picture. Jaguars - E-Types and XKx are not. 30 years ago I drove and XK and went to a lot of rallies, now there are far more XKs at rallies than back then and no one looks at them. They look at 50's American pick ups with patina, VW campers and Citroen H vans. Cars that many thought would hold up like the MB R107 SL now look like an old man's car. I drove 1980 380 SL for some years and it was greatly admired by men in their 60s, never anyone under 50. I now drive a 1970 Land Rover, and very surprisingly (even to me) Series Land Rovers have broken the generation barrier, young people and families come and look at and talk about it. We were at a rally recently beside a Ferrari, convertible Bentley, E-Type and and base model Chevette with faded paint and its original stickers. We got the 2nd most attention, well behind the Chevette which had a steady stream of admirers all day, There must have been 20 XKs, 30 E-Types, dozens of Bentleys but there was one Chevette and people identified with it. The sight of people leaning on the £120,000 Bentley to get a better look at the Chevette was a joy.

    in what world is a slk mercedes or an mgf (or any other car from the 2000s') a classic? People should stop calling cars classic just because they reach the age of 25 years . they are just older cars with airbags and not to be compared with for example a carburetted 60's or 70's car that was not designed by computers.

    This is not different to the past. Cars that people cherished at 15 years are cheap, always have been, but they are NOT Classic cars. When cars have been looked after, sometimes restored and are 40 years old, the values are higher. A 13 year old car is not a classic, it is just old by modern standards.
    Look at the price of old Aston Martins, and think the market has crashed ? I dont think so. I traded in a Jaguar XJ6 X300 ten years ago and now those prices are soaring in comparison to then. Rare cars are high price. The market fluctuates but has not changed. There are bargains if you can do the work when you have found one.

      You’re right about certain types of cars are more valuable than others bucking the general trend of lower prices across the board. It’s all subjective and as long as you’re happy with your choices that’s what matters

    I think classic cars are doomed long term, the direction is electric and old scrap ICE cars won't be permitted.

    old mercs never hold their value, because everyone wants a new one ....in Australia that slk is worth no more than $5000 au....classic car/ motorcycle prices go through cycles..... it depends on the demographics...cars / bikes from the 50s 60s have topped out... now aussie made Holdens and Fords from the Very late 60s 70s are commanding high prices

    SLK and especially MGF are not classic cars ! you can,t base the current state of the classic car market on those cars........sorry , Lots of classics are climbing even in the terrible state the World is in ie ( Wars and Cost of living ) if theyre climbing in these bad times thats good for values
