That clip at the end with your son feeling that muscle is awesome. He's now hooked for life!
Air-cooled muscle lol
That’s is the best, imagine being 10 years old and not even realizing stuff like this does not happen every day. It brings back so many memories. My first car at 15 years old was a super beetle with a factory sunroof,me being 15 of course put 35 inch mudders on the factory rims and my dad helped 😂😂😂 but seriously we used his bus to break the beads, I got it for 300 bucks running and driving with no rust and sold it 2 years later because I wanted a truck WHAT A MISTAKE I MADE. Anyway good times, thanks for the memories.
I rescued a '71 and '73 type 3 fastbacks a few years ago. I was working the scale at a salvage yard, and bought both of them for salvage. They were both full of various VW parts as well. I took all of the parts home and redistributed them to people who needed them for their projects. I hid both of the vehicles in a corner of the yard until I could get titles for both of them. Once I was able to do that, I was able to move both of them to our sale lot. I managed to get the '71 running, and actually sold both of them to a VW nut who was planning to restore both of them. Hopefully they are back on the road today. I managed to save two old VWs as well as a couple hundred original parts.
I have a 71 it decent condition do you want to buy ?
I love the squareback. Way back in 1972, I was 5 and we stayed at a local farm in Bavaria, Germany as my father was working for a company in Germany. The German family took us all on an outing, we visited the 19th century castle Neuschwanstein and the Bodensee. Mr. Fiek owned a royal blue Squareback and I remember at the end of the day lying in the back (apparently above the engine) as we moved through the dark forest of Germany heading home. I remember distinctly the headlights lighting up the road. This car holds a special place in my heart and I will never forget it, or them.
I just found a 1969 up about 5 hours north of me for $5000 running I just sent them a message to negotiate price and we’ll see. It’s going straight into my 40’ high cube shipping container 😂 gotta hide it from the wife for a few months.
So sweet to see your little boy in his booster seat enjoying the power!
You're the King of getting old hubs to roll. 🛠
haha! I couldn't believe the front discs were stuck! I didn't even tap them prior to putting the rims on as i figured they would just break free ....nope lol
"It's hip to be Square" What a find.
haha!! ..." I'm takin' what they're givin' 'cause I'm PUSHIN' for a livin'
Love the square back we had one when I was a kid. We were stationed over in Germany. Early 80s 👍👍👍
I like the square back , looks like the one my dad bought when we lived near Atlanta in 1974 -was an automatic with air. He drove it two days and took it back to the used lot- he didn't like it. Jenns face when you said ( I'm going to go get another one ) lol priceless
Jay, between I pity the fool, the Swedish Chef's bork bork bork , your wife's reaction to getting the second square-back and Josh's look on his face each time you took off you made my Saturday Night. Thanks so much my friend and take care. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee 😁
Squarebacks look great with a roof rack! Sweet color
Hey Jason, Steve Muller here…I’m glad Tim hooked up with you…he’s been trying to get me to buy that for years…I told him, “I know a guy” 😀😀
Hi Steve! Thank you for hooking me up with Tim and the SQ.
Thanks Steve!
Cool car and congratulations to your very nice family.
Thank you , much appreciated Dennis
That blue was the best colour for the fastback, the white and orange ones weren’t so good, so you have a good project there. The last clip with Josh in the fast bug is priceless !, reminds me of happy memories when I built a kit car and gave rides to nephews. The smiles on their young faces a captured happy memory..things to cherish..❤
Square back looks like a great score, loads of potential for sure!
Those flash back clips were awesome, brings back many memories.
My Dad had a 1971 Squareback when I was a kid. That car brings back many memories.
I love the square backs. They are so cool. It would be a blast to have and putt around in.
😁👍
Lots of potential on that square back. The vid clips at the end are priceless.
One of my favourite cars. I had a Type 4 LE estate with early fuel injection. It pulled like a train even with a blown 2nd gear. Super comfy and quiet to drive. 🤗🤗🤗🤗
nice
I just dragged home a thing today and was having the same issues with my winch cutting in and out. I had a frozen front drum. Jens look on her face was priceless!! Also with Josh! So funny! You got it, going on!
Square back is cool can't wait to see will it run... That last part with u and your son is priceless so cool.
Squareback doesn't look too bad. Not much in the way of metal available for these cars, though. Unfortunate someone threw away the original fuel injection. These cars ran soooo nice on the original system. Many were converted to carbs due to a lack of knowledge about how the injection worked. Enjoyed the clips at the end, especially the one where Josh struggles to keep his eyeballs in place during those impressive acceleration runs!
I'd have to disagree on the fuel injection system - with my quote a couple of comments below :(
The EFI cars ran perfectly when everything was in good order, but they were more prone to self-immolation than a Buddhist monk.
@@pcno2832 ... 9 times out of 10 the problems were bad grounds or vac leaks. Then of course, the obvious fuel leaking issues because few understood the increased pressure over a carbed engine. Once you had that under your belt the rest was fairly easy.
Thats awesome, now you got me thinking square! I got the Vanagon westfalia, bought it new in 1980, still drive it most days 42 yrs later! Kids grew up camping in it, now i take the grandkids for rides in there car seats! Got the bug, 72, now its either a ghia or square back, kinda love them both! Thanks for all your awesome videos, now that I subscribed, im gonna go through the list, but have always watched your rescues , but im sure theres a few nuggets i missed!
FINALLY, over to the dark side. As the owner of a 70 Notch all I can say is SAVE THAT CAR. Well done.
haha, is type 3 land the dark side? Will do , thank you Dale
Thats a good looking little wagon! Your boys face on the pulls is priceless, I'm sure I pulled some faces like that when my Dad had a new, which was often! 😄
My favorite part wash watching Josh’s face while riding in the Hi-pro VW 😎👍👍
😁👍
Looks like one of the more solid cars I've seen you dig out.
I agree Johnny
Really nice looking start you have there, Jason!
It was a fun day hanging out with you Tim. Thank you for passing the Squareback on to me, I appreciate it.
@@5150mxVW it was my pleasure. Looking forward to seeing you do a Will IT Run with this one!
I love these, and the notch back
👍
Hell yeah Rad Dude!! My first exposure to VWs when I was a kid was my grandmas 71 type 3 fastback! It was blown up in her driveway, we would play in it as kids!! Marina blau also!!!
Good vidio Jason. I like the square back. And yes it will Run!Your son looked like he in the. Back seat cute
Great video mate
You too have a great weekend
thank you MR M !
Had a '69 Squareback. Probably the most perfect car in terms of dependability, ease of repair, fuel economy, simplicity, and utility. Looked cool too.
This is my dream VW. I am so jealous you found one in such good condition.
Great to see a Type 3 join the herd. They are great cars. Looks like a1600 dual carb. A 65 square back was my first car and I’ve had 5 or 6 since. Looks well worth getting running and driving. Love your work man.
It looks really cool with the chrome wheels and white walls with the patina
I learned to drive a stick on one of these in driver's ed, 1971. I was the only one in class that could drive a manual, so I didn't have to share drive time with anyone. My 1st car was the family 1970 Beetle. I'm jealous how you find all these cars. Yes I want to buy it too.
My Dad bought a 72 Squareback in 1975 to replace my Mom's 65 Pontiac Bonneville. For some reason the garage grew bigger. Thought the 73's color was "Neptune Blue." Had the newer big plastic center steering wheel, if that happened in 72. You've got a very solid car! Squarebacks were notorious for rusted out front fenders at the top corners, near the leading edge of the doors, just below the windshield. I didn't see any of that in your video. And I agree with other comments: nice 80's references with the T and the Swedish Chef!
Just reread. Pretty sure it was all 72. Missed the one "73" before sending
I had a 1973 Type III Squareback. It was the best aircooled I owned. Had 3 Beetles, 1 Karman Ghia and the squarback.
I really love the square backs there’s not a lot of them still around. You can find VW Beatles everywhere but not these. Really love the video as always!
thank you for all the great comments Marty, I appreciate it
Awesome squareback and great throw back clips! More squareback please.
thank you! I just washed it, man it looks sweeet
Love it. Looks like a keeper. You’re wife is a good woman!
thank you, yes she really is :)
takes me back had won from 78 to 87 hope you get this going
I love Square Backs! I had a red one, same year, when I was in College. I named it Erma, not sure why, just looked like the right name, lol. The blue color on yours is much better looking, I hope it cleans up well!
Love the old squareback wagon! good find man!
thank you !
My first car was a 71 fastback that color. Wasn't all that reliable, but it taught me how to work on VWs.
My first car was a 69 Squareback of the same color. Wish i still had it. Good luck with the car, had a blast in mine. I got pulled over in the snow going the speed limit of 30. 😅
She looks very solid!
thank you , we will get a good look soon on the lift but it is a very solid car for New England
When I was a scout our scout leader had a square back. If we were going anywhere,it was the car we jumped onto. Cool car
Great video glad you posted keep them coming thanks
Congrats...these variant VW is the grandfather of the VW passat.
Rabbit, all the late type 3 parts are marked with Rabbit codes.
@@HookedOnOn1c yes, but only in the us or export models for diverse countrys....in germany the rabbit was produced since 1974 and its a full different product, (watercooled engines) only parts like lamps and switches are same numbers (vdo tachometers hella headlights etc.)
Omg 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣nice work on the slowm0 [[[priceless]]] more jen reactions in slowm0 😂😂
😁
😎
Hey you were supposed to drop that off for Heather here!! 😁
oh man, I sent a 911 ! ...I mean 411😆
@@5150mxVW That’ll work! 😂😂 Honestly nice type 3 there! And great video as usual!
Squarebacks are cool. My dad used to own one when I was a kid, I don't remember it but there's pictures of me in it.
Pretty cool man!Thanks for sharing.
thank you DS
Nice
I had one 30 years ago. Rebuilt the engine and put carbs on it. Would love a notch back!!
Awesome Video there!!!!
Morning all from Siesta Key Florida
good Morning, sounds cold were you are ;
Awesome! TH-cam needs more type 3 content...
I bought a 1968 fastback new and a 19 70 fastback new. On the 68 I hit a deer on the way home from the dealer with only 12 miles on it. New hood and left front fender. Back to the dealer body shop and the foreman said “ People usually come in for their first oil change before they need body work” I did have a 1967 square back that I got free with a blown engine , well I had a 1600 bug engine that I put in just to see if it would work . I put in a rear support and it did poke up thru the floor but went fine. I sold it as is to a friends brother who was going to college at the time and it turned out to be very reliable, cheap transportation 👍🎩
Nice square back ! Great for moving 4x12 cabs back in the day….
This type is on my wish list. So much so, I would swap my Porsche Boxster for one! Cool videos, keep em coming 🤟🏻🤟🏻😀👍🏻
👍👌👏 You definitely have become much better and much more experienced over time. In one of the throwback clips 3 strong men were needed to push one car around. Meanwhile you're able to do this by yourself! 😁😜😘😇
Best regards, luck and health.
HAHA ! that was a fun day
Nice find. Yeah, she’s speaking to you and wants to be resurrected, you can just tell. I was never a fan of those eyelids, but they actually look really good on that car. I think I’m inspired enough to put them on my 64 squareback. ISP is the main place for parts, their pan halfs are ok, but I had to do a little metal massaging to make them work. CIP1 has some stuff as well. Fuel pump looks the same as a type1 but is different, rebuild kit won’t work regardless of what they tell you. The diaphragm is t3 only. Good luck with it.
There is a company in cambridgeshire UK called "type 3 detectives" that might be able to shed some light on what is available for these cars internationally. They were and are a rare sight in the UK. Is the engine more or less the same unit that was used in the T4 that vw-porsche used in the 914? CT is doing a 914, so he will know something about that.
Dont know about ethanol content of fuel in the USA, but we have E10 now and its causing trouble. Renewing all the fuel lines in my 67 T1 with Cohline polyamide instead of steel (even the kunifer nickel copper is not good with ethanol and other options are an expensive pita to use) and new flexihose - all in Cohline which is capable of taking up to E100 - futureproof :-)
the engine is NOT the same as the T4 / 914. Internally, it's the same as a T1 with minor differences in the engine case for mounting and the external dip stick. Obviously, the sheet metal is all different.
That's a cool looking car. I don't think I've ever seen one before
Nice Squerback 👍
Nice score!
thank you
Love a square back…. Ship it over… I’ll have it 😁👍🏻🇬🇧
new car //outstanding
Think you've completed the pre 80's air cooled VW range. Well done!
Great find btw. Had one growing up.
He needs a few more cars to complete the pre 80's vintage cars.
thank you, did you? Nice👍
i think there are a few that didn't make the list 76
@@5150mxVW The family legend is that I used to throw my diapers out the window when on the motorway....what can you do...
@@cidercik 🤣🤣😆😆😂😂
We had on of those the fuel injection type. I bought it brand new in Sacramento, ca. The clutch didn't last to long. It also over heated a piston had to replace it. They the dealer said it ran lean and over heated the piston. We took it to the mountains we were skiers snow. It was snowing real good but the car would crank but not start. A guy pulled the fuel pump ground wire and it started right up. We got rid of it soon after. So I will be looking forward to see what you do with it..
Oh boy that would be a great project.
love that body type , was what my Mother drove while in college in D.C. same blue color . Laughing at the ending and WHEN will you and mustie team up ? miss seeing you's videos with vs nut . Throwback clips are the best
Looks Great! The only Type 3 I ever owned was my shortest ever purchase! Third day of my Fuel Injected Fastback it burst into flames and burnt out! In the middle of a busy city and bought the whole place to a standstill, it was strange and so sad watching it burn, Injector Let go big time ! Nice to see it's Twin Carb ! New fuel and I bet it will fire up straight away !
Very nice score ❤
The seller, would have an interesting life story also ? LOL Muppets reference . Many, too young, to pick up on it ... Kind Regards Alex
Afternoon mate
Jason, double check the fuel pump! This year type 3 would have originally been fuel injected. Sometimes people put carbs back in them, but never replace its higher pressure fuel pump.
Finally. Squareback safe my favs
I’d buy it ,love my 73 squareback !!
Thats one happy kid :)
Love the square I have a 72 Marina blue rhd that has chrome steels in all round, best driving vw I have 🙂
I had the fast back version to this car and somehow with bad decisions lost the car. Brings back memories
I love it man , even tho I’m more of a beetle guy , I do like em all . Even that red dodge . Lol . Red ghia ! Wow ! Nice ! Interested in what the square back hit you $$. I’ve had a thought of owning one . Thanks for sharing man , I can see the close resemblance in our yards even tho I’m in Alabama.
Nice ,good weekend
than you JcF
Wow that one made me happy
LOL
First time i got high was in the back of a squareback.
good times =)
Gorgeous.
Thank you
You are lucky to have such a lovely wife.
9:15 I wonder if someone added those pop-open rear windows, or maybe they were an option for '71. They were standard until '70 when VW added the rear extraction vents on the C-pillars (2:59), which didn't seem as effective. Either way, you've got both on this car.
I don’t know much about the type 3s but I did get an extra set of standard rear glass with the car . So that might explain that 👍
ISP and Bill and Steve’s are pretty much the only sources for Type 3 parts in the US. And the only new sheet metal available are floor pans, and rockers.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one Jay...I've got a thing for Squarebacks Jason (see what I did there, lol) and that one looks to be totally restorable.
If you get bored with it and decide you wanna let it go, let me know :)
Body and paint is in good shape. Would make for a nice patina car.
I had a '65 euro spec, green, push to start or park on a hill, 6 volt. $200 in 1974. I thought I could fix it but couldn't. Left it at a junkyard with a note, "please take this car. The signed title is in the glovebox." I still regret it to this day.
A type 3 fastback, 411,412, type 4 cars, type 2 double cab, air/water-cooled Vanagon's, are the only models you haven't brought home yet. Once you get those home, you can start on the gray market cars. 😁
this car has beautiful eyes
👍
VWcoco has a very cool Squareback over on his channel.
Nice!!!!! My b day today the 19th !!!! Space ace Ron⚡️⚡️⚡️ 1971
Happy Birthday Ronnie! I LOVE the thumbnail, Kiss was my 1st concert in 77 or 78, awesome show
@@5150mxVW thank ya! I’m a longtime watcher of your videos ! That’s awesome you saw kiss! I’m from Tennessee ! I’m going to see ace in feb. Of 23 ! He’s appearing just 25 minutes away here in my local area !
@@ronnieparker4311 I just looked up what year NY Groove was...1978 , man that was a long time ago 😆, I used to rock out to that one....I'd try and draw the solo album cover all the time. Enjoy the show !
Same model and color as in the 1985 movie "Witness" with Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis. Cool
