- This week we go check out a barn find. Its a 1969 VW Fastback Type3. Will this be the next VW restoration? We look at this car thoroughly. We look at the front axle beam, the VW heater channels, and floor pans.

Dustin Hoffman early in career did a Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback commercial ... Was humorous in way he was taken back that car had two trunks, well these days/daze more accurately termed - frunk & trunk ... Nice find - enjoy ! Slainte' ! Cheers !

That poppy red is the best color of 69! One very thorough application of "color back" will amaze you!
I really liked the faded color, I was going to leave it that way. I was very excited until I got underneath it.

Yes he would Dave, I even spoke with him about it. I had a few questions for him about parts.
I was brought up under the sound of vw exhaust. What i dream of today is an EV kit behind a classic vw, especially type 3 and 4. Imagine seeing a fastback T3 vw EV, behind you , in your BMW just before its gone.

I thought that was quite strange? Why someone would put brand new calipers and brake hoses on a beam that’s falling off of a car.

@@SladesVWBeetle Yeb, with International German Transit license number, the big white oval plate in far far away land. I remember once I took it to a mechanic for oil change. After few minutes the mechanics assistant came to me and the shop owner with a surprise look and voice " There is no engine!!". Shop owner with embarrassment replied " stupid it is in the back". a moment later he came back again and said "There is no engine in the back either!!" While I was laughing went with him and showed him the cover to the engine was under the carpet with two handle that he needed to turn before opening it.
I don't blame you for passing on this one. I'm afraid it's going to take two T3s to make one whole one.
Yes it’s going to take quite a bit of work for somebody. Although I do believe he has parting it out now

I have a first year fastback that was bought new by my dad , 69 is a good year 12v disc brakes and irs and the early front, luckily mine is virtually rust free

Hard to find anymore but even more difficult is the notchback. There is one restored in my home town.
That is very cool Dan, that is the only one I’ve seen around here in many years.
@@SladesVWBeetle My understanding is the notchback was never imported to the states, but some were brought over by servicemen.
Thanks for sharing. My first car was a 69 fastback automatic red. It was my great grandmother’s car and I restored it in theme late 90’s. It got rear ended but wish I still had it or had the means to have held on to it. Cheers!

@@SladesVWBeetle You got it. I have a 63 bug my dad restored in the late 90’s as well. I have a full air ride kit I will be installing late summer/winter. Half the fun though is in the hunt for the vw. ✌️

I asking because I don’t know, but could you put type III pans on a beetle tunnel, would that fit? If not, what are the other problems?

That’s a cool car. Def keep the OG paint just buff it out. Pretty straight. Yes rare car. Automatic too! That’s crazy. Do a pan off. Jaaa like it’s so easy. Could be a show stopper.
Honestly it bother me, it was hard to let go. I went back and checked it out again and pull the gas tank and did a short video on it.
Nice car. Shame about the rot in the front. The body looked very good !
That’s what I thought, the body amazed me. I was quite surprised when I looked underneath.
Yeah a tad to far gone but will be a good project for someone slade. Good luck with finding another project

69 auto pretty rare find. I’m restoring a 69 auto squareback for my wife now. I can’t believe they attempted to put new front brakes on it while the front beam is that bad. Crazy
Right? I noticed that too. Brand new calipers and hoses, and did not make sense to me at all. Good luck on the square back for your wife that is so awesome.
I love you two's energy! Those memes gives these videos so much character. Fastbacks are sexy the motors are a beast to put on the tins but otherwise pretty sleek machines. I didn't know about the automatics this thing comes with a lot of bells and whistles the rot is a little scary 😳 and the suspension gives me the heebie jeebies.

That would make a great parts car for someone. The west coast has nice rust free, type 3 available.
I think that is what I’m going to have to resort to for the next project on the 68 is done. West Coast!

The car does have a lot of potential to the ambitious buyer! Its too bad that beam is toast, but good used ones exist. This car is very well worth saving!

Yes Gordon, I think the best thing was to walk away. I went back to take a look again and did another short video I still have to put up that’s how bad I wanted it.

Absolutely, I wish I could help. But the body work underneath was the bad part.
I had a 69 fastback that was my daily driver for 3 years and still miss it. This one if it was a type 1 the rust repairs would not be an issue since there are so many replacement panels available. However, the type 3 is limited on its restoration parts. I currently have a 71 super with about the same amount of rust repair that I am half way through and purchased the car without minding those repairs. I would have passed on this one as well.
Thank you James, unfortunately I did pass it by. It just is not quite as easy to get the repair panels as you stated. One nice thing about a type one because you can get the repair panels which makes it much easier
I just wanted to share pics of my 69 automatic Fasty but I can’t post pics in comments. Her name is Gertrude and she’s the best car on Earth. It’s been my dream car since age 15, 30 years later I finally got ‘er. Not ever going to be “show quality” and maybe never a daily driver but she’s perfect to me.

Great to see you two having fun! The car has lots of potential. I would worry more about the auto trans than the beam. The rest of the rot is the usual cut and weld. Is there a used beam on Samba?
I did find a couple used ones on the samba. I did another shorter video on it I have to edit and put it up. I pulled the gas tank quickly to check, after I went back the second time. It looked like it was all rotted out pretty bad, like the beam became rotted to the frame head.
That looks a lot like my old 66 FB

I hope a T3 person comes along and picks up this car. Fastbacks are my least favorite T3, but they're all pretty great, anyway. I've seen many examples of people putting back together much further gone cars than this. There just aren't that many of them left. More and more are becoming parts cars all the time.
I was really sad but I could not keep that car. I’m sure it could have been fixed. I left out filming the back, it was rotted out something horrible underneath. I was really upset, I wanted this car so badly.
Check with CT, he may have a extra beam for one of these?
I did find some beams, just the rest of it was really bad.
bummer especially since it takes so much time for restoring these classics. you have to do one at a time then pick the next one and how much time and money you want to put into it. I'm just restoring old outboards and the cost is allot less than a VW that's for sure
its a nice barn find, but this one needs a ton off work and will reveal a lot worse off rust.
to bad for you that it is so rusty bud others will pop up. its always better to think twice and buy once.

My Dad ha a gloss blk. dual carb 1600 ts . I thought it was early 70 but not sure. Went like hell. Great score that 69, lots of potential .Whats with finding all this automatic vw stuff? Cheers from B.C.
Parts cars take up the same space as a runner I wish my rear bumper was worth re chroming I have the same car with a factory sunroof and white interior
I really wish I could’ve held onto this one, I just have too much going on.
Was the frame head rotten as well? ISP West sells used beams for a reasonable price.
