I pulled home one in similar condition recently here in NC during hurricane Ophelia. Fun. Was using a tow bar and lost a wheel 100 miles from home. More fun. Never been more wet. Lol. Good news is I had a couple inches of water in it which means the pans are there. 😂
I drove a 1973 thing , my daily driver for 15 years. I bought it in 1972 used. After 8 years I replaced both side panels due to rust , had about 120000 miles at this time. About 7 years later rust got it again (Vermont winters) by now it had almost 200000 miles and the engine had never been out of the car, still had original clutch and all cables. I also had the hard top for winter. Only car I ever had with a wind chill factor . Above 50mph the side curtains would flap open and I would have to pull over and let the gas heater catch up the Thing had a special heavier front I beam a factory skid plate on the engine and I believe thing specific sodium filled exaust valves.👍😁🎩
Jason is on a rescue. 3 stripe track pants - check. Winch battery unbelievably charged for once - check. Mousage - check. And as my kids said when they were young "Happy to you cake".
What a score. A thing, a Foghat tape and what looks like a quasi Hurst shift handle. The perfect platform for the Carl Spackler school of auto detailing. HB.
Happy Birthday, enjoy watching all the difficulties we go through bringing back these ol machines! Something fun to watch while putting together a parts list to try and fix a few dubs!
That Thing is pretty cool, and I'm sure you'll get it running before the snow flies. While you're at it, why not rescue the Scout? Just for a change of pace, lol! Happy birthday, hope you get all you wish for!👍
I had a Thing in the early 90's. Cruising around town with the doors off and top down was way too much fun. Got stopped one time, but the cop mostly wanted to check out the car. We had seat belts and eye protection, so it was OK. The windshield wipers even work with the windshield folded. The state law at the time required working wipers, but only eye protection if no windshield.
@@5150mxVW I'm just a goofball dude who has been obsessed with VWs since I was a little kid! Got my first in 92, I've got a decent little collection! I've got about 14, from an oval to a sterling kit car! I would have more but the county Sends me letters!! Haha dude if you ever come to ohio hit me up! And if my band ever comes up NE doing road gigs I will definitely hit you up! You kick ass man!! You are the only person I follow on YT!! Keep up the Rad work!! EVH Rules!!!!! Hahaha
Dear 5150mxVW. Happy birthday! 🎂 👍👌👏 Congratulations 🎉 for purchasing this vehicle. I totally like the VW 181 (nicknamed "Kübel" in Germany). Like you I'm glad that you own one without these big ugly air scoops and fortunately you have the auxiliary heater. I really hope and almost pray that you remove those big ugly elephant foot rear lights. Hope you go with the original European design and use rear lights from the VW bus. It needs quite a bit work to modify the rear body panel. But it looks so much better/cleaner. Of course I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next video. Thanks a lot for making explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular.
Back in the woods! Yay! 🎉 But, Jason! I’ve been holding my breath while waiting to hear whether the ’58 has semaphores or not, and, darn it, just like my mother warned me, my face is turning blue! Haaaaaalp meeeee! 😂😂😂😂😂
Happy birthday 🎉, it never gets old watching you investigate these cars and develop the "vision " 👍👍👍. Have a beer tonight , have one for me while I'm working lol.
I have a soft spot for Things. We road tripped one with the doors off and windshield down in the early 90's. Spending 10 or so hours on the road is pretty fun for the first 20 minutes. The rest is just because we were young and dumb. I can't believe our asses survived long enough to get old.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JASON! I remember those things. Mainly because I slammed into one with the wife's nova years ago. Replacing the exhaust was very simple. Thankfully, that was the only damage. Nice find once again. Keep the rescues coming man.
Musty 2? Love your channel, Things are fun especially on the beach all my very best mate Simon from the UK 👍 Never seen a 4 door Thing good luck can't wait to see if Finnished 👍🇬🇧
Happy Birthday, J! Funny story: my brothers father in law had his Thing stolen, then found, undamaged . Thief left a note: " Dont leave your keys in the car!" Lol!
Happy Birthday my friend!! Things are rare to find especially sitting like that. Jenn’s side has the hole in the floor 🤦🏼♂️😂 That thing is honestly not as bad as I thought it would be. It’s solid! I bought a Kodak tripod, it’s been durable and great! Hazards work!!!
I'd get it running & driving then worry about the floorpan, it's not a classic vw if it doesn't need a floor pan, haha. Those are so hard to find, good luck.
Well that looks fairly solid overall. The engine is free so that is a bonus and you gave the brakes. She will be done for next summer maybe spring? Happy Birthday Jason. 🎂👍👍
Happy Birthday love your videos. Only problem with your videos is bring back memories of all the vws I passed up in the 80s when they were still in excellent condition and less than $500. 😢
Happy Birthday J!! The VW Thing… they were a strange vehicle to say the least lol. Can’t wait to see it running. Thanks for finding these little gems and hopefully returning them to the road. You’re a good man J, even though you supposedly scammed the Dubs. 🤣
thank you Glen, it is on the lift , first start vid next! haha, yeah the 5150 plate was my idea lol...I don't know jack about buses and i guess neither does he as he saw it 3x lol
Get to the Blower! Nice find! Well Happy Birthday to you then!
Nice to let your Thing Hang Out in New England !!!; )
thank you for the birthday gift Richard, don't tell Jen, she'll make me buy the 1st round :)
i served in Germany in the early 70s, and this was their answer to the jeep.
Now you have a thing LOL. I love these vehicles you don't see them very often at all anymore.
Happy birthday there 🎉🎉🎉
Baseball? That explains the mullet. Ha! No slow motion leaf blower shots? Kudos Jay! Thanks for the coffee entertainment.
Happy Birthday Jason!!! Ive never seen a "VW Thing" in real life.
Based off the German WW2 military Kubelwagon
You had me at Foghat!

Eat lots of cake!
Great job rescuing those VWs, dude, finding homes for them and/or repairing them. Keep it up! And, of course, happy birthday!
Happy Birthday Jay! Nice present you got yourself there!
The Hard top is neat! 👀 From 🏴
Every time one of your videos comes up, I wonder what the heck you have found and dragged home now. I am never disappointed. 😊
I love it … let us see you get it started please… Happy Birthday Brother !!!!!

Happy Birthday Jay. My 65 had one of those gas heaters in it. It scared me, because it wouldn't light all the time. I took it out.
Cool! I’ve always loved those things!😬
Happy Birthday, You got a nice looking Type 181 there.
