  • This time Ben digs into his 'surprisingly solid' 1971 Volkswagen Squareback! Just how solid is it? Depends which coast you're on......

'71 is one of the very best years for the Type 3s, and you've found all the usual rust areas. Good luck with the repairs.

Grew up in the midwest and watched road salt slowly consume more than a couple vehicles in the 70s and 80s. I'm always impressed by folks who can look past the damage and envision the finished product. Looking forward to following along with the restoration!

My drivers ed class had one of these way back in 1971, and I always got to drive it alone, didn't have to share because no one else could drive a stick. My Dad had 1970 beetle that I was already learning on. It later became my first car.

I like the intro…I subscribed several months ago when I saw your episode where you were picking up pieces of VW parts out of the road that fell off the bus I think. I knew then this would be a great channel

My 73 was similar but once rust is cut out ,it doesn’t look to bad ,it just looks like a typical Vw . Good work and good luck 👍

Ben, EXCELLENT! Your methodical method reminds me of back when I assisted with surgeries of the exploratory and diagnostic type. Removing decayed tissue until healthy is reached. I can't call it an autopsy or forensics because I am confident that life will be restored!! What a rescue. And please consider a mask at times, along with the eye protection. Actually, the googles look kinda hot...like a space captain. Space, get it? Sorry.

All the bad memories. As I recall, the Squareback was built around something called torsion bars. The ones on my Squareback somehow went bad, and I was told I had no choice but to junk the car. While I didn't know it at the time, that was the best news where that car was concerned than I could have imagined. Just think if they were fixable, what a nightmare all the other things on that car would have turned out to be. The cardboard heating tubes! The windshield washers powered by the spare tire (so you end up with neither windshield washers NOR a spare tire!) I could go on, but what a piece of junk.

There's a place in Southern California that has some body parts for type 3's and square backs try going on line to find him. That may save you some time. Always more rust than one think. Repair one section at a time. And keep the Fath.

Y'all got your work cut out for you there, no doubt! I've got a rot box Dakota w/the bed off 1/4 plating the frame rails. I've already vac'ed and swept 30 lbs of rust from chipping hammering the layers of rust from it's box frame. I had to cut off the leaf spring mounts and the drivers side shock mount to plate behind them and make new ones. I just got to paint all my work thus far because of the rain and no garage. Love the videos, will be watching this closely to see what you do with this one! BTW,how's the new bus engine doing? You need to let your fans know...

@@wickedwerks I saw that, and his rescue video of it as well. His recent ‘out of the wild’ car rescues have been some rare car, but in absolute horrible condition; cars I wouldn’t touch even with the ability and cash! Honestly, the Type 3 is no worse than a mid south car (Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina) car in restorable condition. Don’t worry about making it perfect, just clean up the rust and try your best to stop it from growing, get it running well, paint it up (if you wish) and drive and enjoy it! Perfection is overrated compared to fun!

That car reminds me of the VW Fastback I bought sight unseen for $300 when it was about 10 years old. Plenty of rust and the air from the heater smelled like [something]. It was fun to drive, though.
