This scene never fails to make me tear up. The music, Gordon's speech, Batman's sacrifice, Harvey dead, knowing that this was Heath's final finished film...😭
Not exactly Heaths last film. I would say The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus to be his last.
@@Mathemoto the last one finished...and for which he won the Oscar
And the dialogues as well
I like your name
@Abhinav Menon Gordon says that the joker won, because he corrupted Harvey, the white knight, and that everything he was doing to clean the city of corruption and criminality would be in vain, since the joker only wanted to demonstrate that the kindest man it would be corrupted, and to break batman and gordon, it broke batman's soul and gordon's honesty.
The dialogue where he says "People like to have their faith rewarded" and the camera pans to Fox smiling because Bruce honored his request of destroying that Sonar after its use. Its awesome
And at the same time it pans out to Alfred burning Rachel's letter because Bruce bet it all on that, to have a chance of stop being batman and lead his life in peace with Rachel, only to find out that Rachel chose Harvey, thus Alfred burning the letter and rewarding Bruce for his faith even though it's a lie. It's brilliant writing.
true its really awesome❤️❤️
Dork Knight is still a good movie after a decade.
@@matchesmalone6792 It's a true masterpiece of cinema. Every single shot has meaning, and no shot is wasted.
It really bugs me when people misquote a scene on a TH-cam video. He obviously says “People deserve to have their faith rewarded”.
The ending of this movie always makes me wonder how many times, in real life, somebody has been thrown under the bus, or voluntarily crawled under it themselves, for the greater good. We're lucky enough to know that this is a fictional movie and that Batman is eventually redeemed, but I'm sure there have been hundreds of situations just like this throughout history that we will never really know the truth about; we'll never know who all of the real heroes were.
I call it pandering to blissful ignorance.
It cultivates a superiority mentality, elevated guardian of the People.
@@Dowlphin tf?
Its not so far off. This is a movie. Some achievements by some great humans have been on record. For example; Desmond Doss on Hacksaw Ridge or Leo Major in the town of Zwolle. Humayun Khan in Iraq on 2016. Actual, real life heroes.
thank sir
@JG the Faded Jedi Maybe, maybe not, maybe that and more.
I dislike champion worship. Wielding great power for the common good is a very dangerous thing. Instead of acting in the shadows to save the ignorant rabble from doom, we should promote mass enlightenment. It might be less exciting for storytelling, but that balance nourishes the heart and calms the mind.
And this movie, after all, also features the Joker explaining to Batman how he is the rabble's useful freak. But Batman then twisting that into an unsung-savior sacrifice theme is even worse. And saying that right now he needs to be the rabble's scapegoat is more of that bullshit. No, the ignorant rabble does not deserve any enemy image but themselves; a mirror shown.
*Corruption is a grassroots movement!*
i just realized Bruce falls from high heights three time this movie. First to stop Scarecrow, then to save Rachel and finally to save Gordon's son. No wonder he's crippled when TDKR begins
He was crippled because he was retired for 8 years and as bane says in tdkr "peace has cost you your strength, victory has defeated you"
@Ruturaj Shiralkarit shouldn't take more then eight years for a bullet wound to recover
@Ruturaj Shiralkar he retired because he took the fall for harvey Dent's murder so he could salvage harvey's reputation
@Ruturaj Shiralkar the bullet wound fully healed
No idiots he was crippled because of jumping off helicopters skiing
“He’s a hero Gotham deserves but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll hunt him, because he can take it.”
Give me chills everytime
And right at that moment zimmers drum hit literal chills
“Because he’s not our hero, he’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a Dark Knight.”
To this day I still remember seeing this opening night. As Gordon’s narration goes on with the shot of Batman’s cape flying through the air while riding the Batpod. Only to suddenly cut to the title with Zimmer’s glorious track playing in the background. Now that’s how you end a masterpiece.

Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne/Batman had the best character development out of all the incarnations. Also the Batman franchise was dead before he put on the cowl so he literally saved it with Nolan and brought it back to life. Bale deserves more respect!

Too bad this has 69 likes or I woulda liked it
@@stephenolder4552 TDKR isn't that bad it just looks bad bc it follows after this masterpiece . I actually love the ending of TDKR the most in the entire the trilogy
@@fishyfish6510 its the weakest out of the trilogy regardless. The villains motives were weak. Why did Bane and Talia wanna destroy gotham? Gotham was a lot better than it was in Batman Begins. It was relatively peaceful in TDKR. There must be 1000s of cities more corrupt than Gotham in that point of the story. So what was there motive? To hurt Bruce cause he killed/let die Ra's? I dont know. I cant remember a really strong motive.
From a simple action movie point of view, it seemed Batman went from ninja style fighting to more of a brawler? Maybe cause of his injured body, but regardless, not as enjoyable to watch. But im no martial arts expert.
Other issues i could list, but regardless, its been awhile since ive seen it so my memory could be alittle off
Gotta love the symbolism of Batman driving into the light when Gordon calls him The Dark Knight. Nolan took a film that could’ve been great, and turned it into a masterpiece
the dark knight ride into a blinding light
Gary Oldman's performance in this trilogy and especially this film is so overlooked. To me he was really the glue that held it all together and it's a damn shame that his portrayal of Gordon doesn't get nearly as much praise or attention as Ledger's Joker or Hardy's Bane. He was the most human and believable of all the characters and truly brought Gordon to life in a way that was never done before on screen. To me, Gary Oldman will always be the definitive Gordon.
Gary Oldman will always be the perfect example of what I think it's called a "character actor", the one that isn't in the red carpet, in the spotlight, the one who doesn't sell tickets, but one the greatest actors of all time.
@@sotsubreivaj I dunno if I'd say he doesn't sell tickets, especially considering that in the last decade or so he's been widely recognized as one of (if not _the)_ greatest actors of all time and was really one of the only reasons most people saw Darkest Hour (for which he finally earned his long overdue Oscar), but I definitely agree with your overall point. Even when he's the main star of a film he never makes things about himself, but rather he lets his performance do the talking and has always shied away from the spotlight or falling into the whole paparazzi scene. In that sense he's always been the ideal actor in my eyes.
With that being said, after seeing The Batman this year, I have to admit that Jeffrey Wright has done a great job at filling the massive shoes Oldman wore with his portrayal of Gordon and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what he does with the character next. I thought it'd be impossible, but thankfully they found an actor worthy of the task.
Unpopular opinion: the character dynamic between Dent and Gordon in this movie is even more compelling than Batman and the joker
The thing about this movie in particular but also the whole trilogy is that they got the best supporting actors for every role. Like just look at Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. And I mean he was not as prominent in TDK but Cillian Murphy is an amazing actor too.
This is one of the best movies of all time and a big part of the credit goes to Heath Ledger and his astonishing performance but it wouldn't come close to the masterpiece it is without all these incredible minor characters.
Honestly it's insane to me that the new Batman somehow managed to get close to this one. I'll be honest the new Gordon is good and all but not one of them comes even close to the supporting actors Nolan had for his trilogy. Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis are great actors in their own right but to me at least Oldman and Caine are just of a different caliber. Hard to compare anyone to some of the greatest of all time.

"Because sometimes truth isn't good enough." Quoted, as Alfred burns Rachel's letter. This movie was a masterpiece.
When i first saw this movie as a kid, i was asking the same question in my head as Gordon’s son asks him. After a decade, on the cusp of my eighteenth birthday, i finally understood why Batman was thrown under the bus -for the greater good. It’s amazing how the director and screenwriters can capture the exact thoughts of both a small kid and a mature adult in the same scene. It’s also a life lesson to be learnt. Sometimes good people don’t get what they deserve but in the end the sacrifice or martyr proves that fundamental principles like nobility, honor and sheer willpower always defeat evil.
Same here, I watched this film as a child back in theaters and I was confused as to why the police were chasing batman when he saved Gordan's son, now as an adult, I understand why.
Factual, I had the same reaction growing up. I was confused by the ending at first but the more I processed it the more I thought “wow, this is fucking incredible”
@@LegoReader12345hello I'm 20-years-old and I still don't quite understand why Batman was thrown under the bus for the Greater Good even if I did, I Disagree, Batmans Decision of Hiding Harvey's Crimes and replacing Harvey for himself responsible was basically the Aftermath of Jokers Success, even though for the Greater Good that Batman was thrown under the bus, What Good would It do? how is this a life lesson? I don't see the Greater Good in this, but out of Skepticism, not out of Refusal... I'm just saying I never knew what It's like to get (for example, Myself) Thrown Under the bus, just to hide the Truth about someone else's selfish act, and claim myself responsible for that. I Think it's in my Point of View It May have saved Gotham and Tore Down Joker's Anarchist Movements, But It also Just absolutely Hurts & Breaks your soul & ego to the Point where your Head wants to Not let this happen, but your Heart says otherwise, As If the Audience felt the Backstabbing Emotions of seeing Batman doing this act just like Gordon, and His Son, I feel as if Two Sides of My self-saying this Decision Is:
Light Side: This Had To happen because it was the only way to Undo the Damage of Jokers Crimes, and that Harvey Died a Hero, Not the Hero Gotham Deserves but the Hero They Needed.
Dark Side: This Decision is Wrong, Batman Claiming that he committed the Crimes That Harvey Dent really committed is going to be regretful, this Lie of Harvey Dent being a Hero will one day eventually fall apart, and Gotham will have no other Hero to save them than Batman. because Batman is the REAL HERO!!!!
I also watched this movie numerous times as a child, I especially liked the action scenes but never really understood anything since English isn't my first language. Christian Bale's Batman, was the best Batman I've ever seen, At the time DC was badly famous with the hero, because of some ridiculous films like Geoge Cloney's, Christian Bale's Batman was not only successful at the box office how he raised the hero and brought Batman back to fame again.
this scene always makes me full of tears...the music ,gordan's monologue...the visuals...batman riding....epic scene!!!🤧
This scene I think perfectly encapsulates why Nolan was the best director to ever direct batman. He really understood the core of what makes the character special better than anyone else. Sure he made some mistakes along the way, like blowing up the league of shadows and stuff, but for the most part he translated batman's core ideas to the screen. The first was the no killing, which Burton and Snyder both ignored, but also the fact that batman is more than a man. He is a symbol. This scene perfectly demonstrates that. If he was just a guy fighting crime, he would have tried to do everything he could to not connect it to him. But he knew that someone had to take the blame. Harvey couldn't, the city looked up to him too much. Gotham still needed a police commissioner (that wasn't corrupt) so batman knew it was him. He, unlike Gordon or dent, didn't have a face. He was a symbol. Previously, that symbol was a nightmare of criminals and a beacon of hope to the innocent of Gotham, because that was what they needed. But priorities changed, and now that name had to be ridiculed and hated so that dents legacy could be intact, free to inspire Gotham in a way the batman never could. As the movie said, dent was the white knight, the one that had to remain pure for Gotham, but batman was the one that was whatever Gotham needed him to be. A dark knight. In the next movie, he once again must inspire and protect Gotham when Harveys legacy is tarnished and can't do that anymore. Nolan understood this better than anyone, which is why I believe he is the greatest director of batman, and why I think this movie is the greatest of all time. I hope Matt reeves can reach this level of understanding of the batman.
I think Nolan also understands the notion that one can’t be the hero AND have the glory. In that sense, Bruce’s virtue is truer because he doesn’t stand to gain a public relations benefit for his work as Batman. He willingly tarnishes the symbol to secure Gotham’s future.
*he’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector, a dark knight*

No set up for a sequel or an expanded universe, a complete arc for all the characters in the film. Why can't films just be like this anymore ? I'm kinda getting tired of all the setup and building to something. Sometimes, the best part of a story is the end.
All wrapped up in one movie, even slightly over crammed in places, but who cares, this has never been topped
Same here. I just wanted good Batman movies and my god did this trilogy deliver. When your story is being held back by a convoluted universe it turns to shit quite often.
There are perks to both.
Part of the problem is so many of these movies are made with sequels in mind now. When Batman Begins and TDK were made there was no guarantee of a sequel. Now they greenlight sequels before the first one is even finished filming and the studios mandate that the ending hints at what's to come. Here's hoping that the new Batman film can pull off what TDK trilogy did, or at least end with a "maybe?" like Batman Begins did. No mid or after-credits scene to ruin the vibe. Just tell the story that you want told and get out. Save whatever else you have in mind for the next one.
@@starwarsroo2448 I really hope the new Batman movie doesn’t do this , it has so much potential.
1:50 When Hans Zimmer enters i always get goosebumps
I have watched over 1000 movies but nothing top this feeling it's unexplainable Christopher Nolan made something which the superhero movie fans really deserve.
Perfectly describes Batman- "what ever Gotham needs him to be" THATS WHAT BATMAN IS
The music is absolutely beautiful
Sir Christian Bale is not the best Batman
he is "The Batman"
Actually, "The Batman" is Robert Pattinson. Bale is "The Dark Knight".
Joking :D
kshitij Helode I don’t know why the voice tho, like sure he’s good but Michael Keaton didn’t need to hide his voice
TheAbsolute ford he has a very strong accent, I don’t know if it would fit as Batman

The Batman was a good animated show so underrated...
The fact that this movie showed a villain and a hero winning at the same time
The Joker didn’t win. At best, it was a draw. But the people on the boats didn’t kill each other - that was the moment he could no longer win.
@@UnleashthePhury joker won in TDKR, when bane revealed that 2face was the real killer and all the criminals convicted under DENT act was a lie.
The kind of climax where every important aspect as such dialogues, screenplay, performances, cinematpgraphy, bgm, direction, escalates this epic movie to a legendary level.
May not be the greatest movie of all time for many, but it certainly has been the greatest cinematic experience for sure.
Hans theme makes the ending perfect, cannot speak more about this movie, Heath's acting, Christopher Nolan's directing, this movie is truly a masterpiece. Only regret was not to see it in theater.
His wife and son were threatened at gun point, but Gordon runs away from them
and straight down to make sure Batman is still alive. What an absolute King
Because that's what a real man would do
Hahaha, that's a good point.
I guess at least a hug of comfort would be good before he went to check
Gary Oldman and Christian Bale perfectly portrayed the Batman - Gordon relationship in the entire trilogy ❤
Yeah, but they weren’t in any immediate danger, Batman just fell off a building.
Wanted to ensure Batman’s safety after he just saved his family. I’m sure he told them he’s going down to check on him. Probably told his son to go to his mom and that he’ll be right back but has to make sure Batman was alright.
"Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded"
That's deep.
Chills every single time I see the ending of this movie. Hans Zimmer’s genius music and the acting in this movie is something to be admired for centuries.
Universal _Wisdom I heard someone say James Horner is better than Zimmer I was like what?!! Have you seen the Dark Knight in all its’ majesty bro?
Myeong Cho
Haven’t even heard of James Horner lol. Hans Zimmer’s magic was in the Dark Knight series, Kung-Fu Panda (which BOGGLED my mind), Pirates of the Caribbean, and some others I’m sure I’m missing.
@@universal_wisdom3416 James Horner was the guy who made the Titanic score ( which is really good, to its credit) but it's the only thing people know him for
Hey you illegal chocolate seller you sell the chocolate which has sweat of a boy
Man seeing Batman ride the Batpod with the cape flowing and the epic score was fire. 🔥🔥🔥
Wow. 14 years since this came out. Nothing will ever compare to seeing this on the big screen for the first time. I was a Batman fan growing up. I read comics my parents deemed appropriate, I watched the animated series, collected the toys, saw all the movies. Seeing Batman realized like this, starting with Batman Begins. No words can describe the feeling my 13 year old self had watching this at the midnight release.
To anyone thinking batman's sacrifice was pointless(I see a lot of people raving that this ending is stupid): Batman knew that if he didn’t let the blame on himselves than the good side of Harvey Dent would have been overshadowed by his villainous side and most importantly all the criminals Harvey had put jail would have exacaped because the criminal's would have got the testimony of Harvey being a criminal himself. Another important thing that the joker couldn't be put to blame for those murders because Joker was in jail while Harvey murdered those poeple. Whereas batman could aptly take the blame as he couldn't be affected by the police much and also Joker's point of Harvey be coming the villain could have been proved wrong to public. But the irony here is that in reality Joker actually proved the point, this film is the most symbolic, poetic, realistic superhero movie I have seen.
The background score at 3:38 🔥🔥
I've watched this clip more than a hundred times and it still gives me goosebumps.
This was such a good movie
Greatest movie 😍
Nearly a masterpiece
@@Aurantius_ yeah dude I still dk about that plot hole where batman saves rachel when Joker drops her but he doesn't go back
@connextro Marvel fans like a fucking big cock
"I am whatever Gotham needs me to be"
~ a true hero
THANK YOU so much for not cutting out the beginning of the outro song. The whole ending sequence, fantastic as it is, simply isn't complete without that hardcore burst at the beginning of the credits!
I remember I almost cried the first time I saw this, I was left speechless. Even now, all these years later, I have a tear in my eye and goosebumps every time I see this ending...
Batman franchise: "We never said thank you."
Christopher Nolan: "And you'll never have to."
"Because truth is not enough, sometimes people deserve more, sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded"
These lines mean so much. Bruce was referring to city folks, but we know, the narrative was referring to Bruce and Fox. Bruce did not deserve the truth about Rachel, her leaving him. He deserved so much more.
Similarly, Fox had put his faith in Bruce to always do the right thing. He deserved to have it rewarded rather than be disappointed by seeing his idea being used for something so unethical.
The way the scene was shot, this became quite obvious to the viewers, but hats off to the director to come up with such a brilliant narrative and scene switching. Master piece Indeed!
Remember watching this for the first time and my mind being absolutely blown at how good it was and now it’s equally as blown at how good it stayed and holds the bar
1:35 Notice Gordon's reaction. He knows what Bruce is going to say before he even says it. It shows how well they understand each other.
That booming sound when batman says "i killed those people" still gives me goosebumps.
Will it ever be possible to watch this scene without getting chills?
Never. It'll always give chills.
Nope
@connextro No, I don't think it will.

1:57 - I am whatever Gotham needs me to be ❤️ 😢
Nothing less than a knight…shining. 😎
Man I remember seeing this in opening night, theatre was packed and everyone was just captivated for 2+ hours. I doubt anyone walked out of the theater disappointed. That feels like a lifetime ago now.
Hanz zimmer is hands down the most amazing man for making music in films the drums at the end is spine chilling
When the axe hit the light, it breaks the glass only , not the symbol. Batman is a symbol.
In Batman begins, in the aircraft Bruce tells Alfred: " As a man I can be ignored, destroyed. But as a symbol I can be incorruptible, everlasting "🔥🔥🔥
Damn you Nolan ❤️
This was Chris at his best and I mean it....the BEST.
Nolan or Bale?
brigadier-tc Yes.
@@brigadier-tc8565 both

My Top 3 Batman Movies:
1. The Dark Knight
2. Batman Begins
3. The Batman
W
I would put The Batman in 3rd place tho. Batman Begins is a better origin movie for Batman than the 2022 one.
Rises better than rob batman
People underate TDKR...sadly, it is as best as the other two
‘Because he can take it.’ Gordon and Batman relationship is so damn good
I love how Jim reaction of course it to radio call help and Batman immediately stops him and takes the radio, even when he’s hurt he won’t allow for assistance because he’s the Batman. It’s little details that make this movie and this ending best in history.
The dialogue is outstanding,
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
It always amazes me that we went from Batman & Robin to this in a little over 10 years… Nolan really saved the Batman franchise.
Even after watching this scene thousands of times the way fluttering cape of batman cuts to darkness along with Zimmer's music gives me goosebumps. What a masterpiece ❤️
"You Either Die A Hero
Or Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become A Villain"
Greatest Quote I Have Ever Heard
I don’t think there’s a film that truly captured the imagination of the world the way this one did.
I remember seeing people lined up outside and around the theatre to see this the night after I had and being genuinely excited for them. I was like the cop in the third one - “you are in for a show tonight”.
It’s not just Ledger. It’s everything.
All the actors, the cinematography, the music, the set pieces, the stunts, the dialogue, the editing, the direction - very rarely do all these elements reach their absolute zenith in the same movie.
This one does. They knew what they were doing was special.
After watching the Batman 2022, i verify that this movie still the best batman movie EVER !!!
