Bruce began the trilogy, honouring his parents by becoming Batman. He ends the trilogy honouring Alfred, by putting aside his guilt and living a happy life. I love that these movies gave Alfred a win.
Gordons face during the statue unveiling says it all. He's pissed because the city always rejected Batman and now only after he's gone are they accepting that he did good for them.
Giving Bruce Wayne a happy ending as opposed to having him killed off, to me, feels like Chris Nolan is thanking his fans for sticking with him throughout the entire trilogy.
[Christopher Nolan pitching the idea for a new triology to the studio] How about guys if we make Batman movie... which is actually about Batman? Studio execs: Genius!!!
I love the subtle ways that Bruce showed people he was still alive, Leading Robin to the cave(ok that wasn’t so subtle), the nod to Alfred in Venice, but my favorite was repairing the Bat signal. I really like how Gordon notices it out of the corner of his eye, runs his hand over it and looks around hoping to see the Batman once more.
Not only that but how it symbolically showed that Blake would continue the Title of Batman onward after Bruce. Even the bats flew by Blake in the cave similar to how they did with Bruce as he held the lantern in Batman Begins.
I love that Selena also smiled at the end. Bruce probably kept tabs on Alfred and knew that eventually, once Lucius, Jim and Robin had realized that he wasn't dead, word would get to Alfred it would prompt him to resume his quest from decades earlier, going back to that cafe in Venice. Bruce undoubtedly told Selena about this. She didnt even have to turn to see Alfred. She saw Bruce's reaction, and she just knew. I love that tiny detail. I'd like to think that in time, Bruce and Alfred would have resumed contact with each other. But the whole point of the silent meeting in Venice was so that they wouldn't have to...that Alfred would know he was happy and would never have to return to Gotham.
Exactly. Alfred would be just fine knowing that his burden of failing Thomas and Martha was not needed and he didn't fail at all and Bruce being alive gives him SO much peace.
Me too. Warms my heart every time. Batman is a symbol and will always be. Ras was never truly immortal, but batman is. He will always live in our hearts. And bruce wayne was there, happy. The night is darkest before the dawn. I love this triology
I would like to ask you something. My brother and I have a discussion about this scene, specifically in the part where Bruce funeral is happening. Who do you think Alfred is talking to? Bruce or his parents? I say he is talking to Bruce’s father, but I need someone else’s opinion.😂
I would say the top two superheroes ever created are Batman and Spider-Man. What they stand for, the responsibility they feel they have, what they are willing to give. It's a shame they are owned by separate studios. It would be amazing to have them work together or get to know one another without either ever finding out who the other was.
An astonishing conclusion to the series!!! Love the moment where Alfred and Bruce look at each other from across the tables in the cafe. They don't speak a word yet Alfred is proud to see that Bruce has finally found peace. I also love how Gotham is left in Blake's hands. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES may not reach the levels of the first two films, but it was the perfect ending to Nolan's masterpiece, THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY!
"You know how to fight six men, soon we can teach you to engage six hundred" He engaged the whole city, and he acted. He was their hero. He showed them batman is more than just a vigilante with some training. Batman is a symbol. A will to act, for the good. For the better. Batman is the only truly immortal
This is a thing about batman. He's not strong like superman, fast like flash, can't swim like Aquaman, still is one of the most iconic heroes. So is the irony of one of the best superheroes of dc.
To Be Honest; In my opinion The Dark Knight Rises wasn't really perfect as it's Two predecessors, but regardless of what others think, I say it was Good enough to Conclude the Trilogy that Christopher Nolan Vowed to make in his Own Vision of a Story about Batman in a Reality-based Setting. TDKR had its Pros & Cons.
I really appreciate Gary Oldman’s reaction to the fixed bat signal. His expression of happiness and surprise say “He’s alive!” so loudly in his performance as he looks at the building tops to find him. 4:03
Although he probably expects Bruce will come back as Batman, the truth is that Bruce no longer needs to be Batman, he deserves to have his own quiet life now. Maybe he would send a formal letter to Gordon, thanking him for everything and also telling him to not spread the word about him being alive. Who knows.
Nolan was always a dark, more gritty, realist storyteller. But all the while still having that spark of hope. The fire of the human spirit that refuses to be extinguished. Batman is the embodiment of that ideal and one of the most formidable characters in the DCU; as a MORTAL MAN. This was a good homage and “fairytale ending” so Bruce can finally relax and let a new generation take up the mantle.
What I love about Nolan’s rendition of the Batman is his play on the classic characters. When I saw this in theater and finding out that Blake is Robin my jaw dropped. And seeing him having Batman and Catwomen as end game is great. Like it does not get any better than that.
When Morgan Freeman makes that little twitich in his face in response to the ID on the software patch being "Bruce Wayne" makes the hairs on my arm prick up. Goosebumps.
Honestly the best part of this is the shared look of love and thankfulness that is shared between Bruce and Alfred. There is so much translated and said with just a look and a nod. Alfreds' relief and elated happiness that Bruce has finally found peace, and the love and appreciation that Bruce has for Alfred to make his dream come true after everything that Alfred has done for him... just perfect.
I have to agree. The scene he realized the bat symbol is back (he broke it at the end of the dark knight) is one of the most satisfying scenes in all Batman movies.
I seriously cannot understand why people think that they should not of shown Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle sitting there. and saying "Alfred's reaction was enough." BULLSHIT. it was very subtle and when I saw that in theaters I was like"What is Alfred looking at? is he looking at Bruce Wayne? I wanna know for sure!" and then they show Bruce and Selina and I'm like, "YES, that seals it, Batman did indeed not die and now he's with Catwoman. Thank you so much for clearing that up."
It's what some directors do, sometimes to leave intrigue and make the audience keep talking about it. It's like Inception (Nolan's other movie) at the ending...you wonder if the top will keep spinning or will it fall to reveal if it was a dream or reality. We will never know and it's left to the audience to decide...
Jay Nicks I think if the studio left it up for Nolan, Nolan would've just left it with Alfred reacting. However, the studio expected the audience to be pissed (similar to your reaction), so to reduce the likelihood of public uproar, they told Nolan to reveal who Alfred was looking at. Sometimes leaving the audience with a sense of wonderment is the goal. It keeps people talking.
i literally re-watch the scene with Alfred over and over and just cryyyyyyyyyy, its so sweet and perfectly shot, its one of my forever favourite feel good moments in a movie
Its honestly such a good twist of fate. We all know what would be a realistic batman ending. In the end , we rooted for batman but no one rooted better than Alfred and his arc to trying to get bruce to have a life was something of a tragedy. So this finishes Alfred's arc and while seeing bruce alive would make him happier. NOTHING would make him truly happy than bruce actually having a life outside the tragedy. Thats why its the end.
One can only imagine the immense guilt Alfred felt thinking he had failed to save Thomas and Martha's son, the man who was practically his own son, Then the incredible joy he must have felt to find out he was actually alive, living a happy life, even going out of his way to give Alfred the dream he told Bruce he wanted earlier in the film.
this ending made me cry in front of my friends in theaters. the one time i ever cried in front of anyone...especially when Alfred started crying too...
Love this whole scene, gets me every time! Love the whole trilogy. Very powerful and emotional. Love the eulogy by Gordon, so moving. Nolan’s Batman is the best!!!
Except Batman did die. Bruce Wayne live, and allowed his alter-ego to pass on into a previous chapter of Gotham's history. Now it's Blake's turn to continue Wayne's mission.
He didn't quit. He passed it on to someone else and lived his life. There's only so much self sacrifice that you can give to anyone. That's not cowardice. That's truth.
It was not only the story telling, imagine the Alfred batman eye contact moments. If a Mexican music's play their it won't be that intense. Music is the thing that gives the ending story the height and feel. Hans Zimmer just elevated the whole theme and gives them a feel.
I just realized the final scene, where John Blake steps onto the platform...where it RISES HIM UP....Nolan's symbolism: Bruce Wayne hopes John Blake will rise up to take his mantle... mind blown
Genuinely cannot pick a favorite of the three each movie is just as good as the last and they all build so well, this ending definitely gives chills though🎉
My favourite part of the ending was Alfred discovering Bruce got his happy ending with Selina. He just nods, to say "I'm happy for, sir. Goodbye" and gets up and leaves. Loved this trilogy so much.
If someone wonders if Alfred actually saw Bruce or an hallucination, notice that, in movies, when there is a ghost or an hallucination in front of someone, and someone or something passes in the middle of the person and the hallucination, the hallucination disappears. But in the scene where Alfred looks at Bruce, some people pass in the middle of them (in front of the camera) and the image of Bruce doesn't disappear; therefore, he isn't an hallucination, but he's actually there; he's alive.
Exactly, our mind stops processing the hallucination when there are distractions and such. And the movie already gave enough clues to the audience to figure Bruce is alive.
WB: You really started something here, Superheroes in the Real World, Hope for the fans Nolan: But WB: Marvel is beating us, and now we got three mediocre DC movies. Nolan: We will, we can bring DC back. WB: what about escalation? Nolan: Escalation? WB: We make Man of Steel, Marvel make Winter Soldiers, We make Batman v Superman, they made Civil War Nolan: And? WB: You are the one of the few directors that made quality DC films. WB: Take this guy, Directed by Zack Synder, has a taste for the theatrical like you, leaves a calling card. Nolan: I'll look into it. WB:We never said thank you. Nolan: And you never have to. Nolan jumps off rooftop.
Alfred thinking he failed Bruce and his parents is the most heartbreaking part of all of this. Bruce's sadness turns to rage, but Alfred's sadness never stops being pure, raw grief as he watches his boy put himself at risk daily
I just realized this last night where Batman’s statue is, is where two faces was and we know how there was two sides to his death which keeps the trend with this current “death” Batman died but Wayne lives
Alfred's scene is the most touching and extreme sadness.. You can tell that man loved them all as their own. It is extremely sad... One of the most touching scenes of all time
I will always love this trilogy and everything Nolan put into it... I'm not a comic fan or into the story lines but Dark Knight trilogy is so sooooo Good
Bruce Wayne ,chose a life few could have followed.. To stand for those that had no voice, for those that lived in fear, he believed that people should have justice and it should never be out of reach of anyone. In that scene he was right "a Hero can be anyone even a man putting his coat on a little boy letting him know the word had not ended" Out of all the super heroes that have every been bought to life Batman has remained the very best of them.. Just an imperfect man trying to fix a broken world.
watch it again and the ending is superb.... intellectual without going over the top.. the subtleties like the bat signal being fixed, the entrance to the cave, etc
"Nobody is ever gonna know who saved the entire city." "They know. It was the Batman." Not a specific person, but a symbol. It could be anyone of them, anyone of us, anyone of you. And knowing that, people know that they can keep fighting for the future. That no matter how hard things will become, there'll always be someone who will stand up against injustices and crime. Sure, he couldn't have done all that without his money. But he also couldn't have done that without his friends, the people who helped him in this long war. You don't need to be the main character of a story to do good; you don't need to be under the spotlight to make things right. The mask wasn't just to protect the people he cared about. It was to help everyone realize the strength they got inside.
Amazing story by Christopher Nolan! The most realistic, dark, and emotional story of Batman in modern cinema! Adding elements of humanity and realism to a fictional universe made The Dark Knight Trilogy the greatest superhero film series of all time. Amazing job by Christian Bale! He is not the Batman we wanted, he is the Batman WE DESERVED!! No one else can match his balanced and realistic portrayal of this character!
IT"S SUCH A GOOD ENDING. Part of me wishes for another movie, but the chance of it ruining a perfect trilogy out of greed would probably be way to high. It's just that no other superhero franchise has ever gotten close to matching this. It's amazing
One of the best endings to a movie/trilogy ever. Nolan is truly a master of story-telling.
ow. that one hurt. -.-
.. What about Valkyrie's end?
I agree....with this string of movies, especially. The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, The Prestige. Amazing movies, all of them.
Except in second movie Batman's sacrifice was unnecessary and Joker's experiment makes no sense.
Very true. The happy twist ending made it the best of the three movies.
Bruce began the trilogy, honouring his parents by becoming Batman.
He ends the trilogy honouring Alfred, by putting aside his guilt and living a happy life.
I love that these movies gave Alfred a win.
One of the best comments I've read about this

Quiet as it’s kept, Uncle Alfred might be the best written DC character.

WB: You really started something here, Superheroes in the Real World, Hope for the fans
Nolan: But
WB: Marvel is beating us, and now we got three mediocre DC movies.
Nolan: We will, we can bring DC back.
WB: what about escalation?
Nolan: Escalation?
WB: We make Man of Steel, Marvel make Winter Soldiers, We make Batman v Superman, they made Civil War
Nolan: And?
WB: You are the one of the few directors that made quality DC films.
WB: Take this guy, Directed by Zack Synder, has a taste for the theatrical like you, leaves a calling card.
Nolan: I'll look into it.
WB:We never said thank you.
Nolan: And you never have to.
Nolan jumps off rooftop.

TheEasterling666 That was epic
TheDarkness666 I didn't realise it till ... Take this guy ... Nolan jumps off rooftop ... Epic XD
This is the best final and best movie I have ever seen. I love batman. The best triology we'll ever see
Possibly the most perfect end to a film ever. Nolan is a genius.
I love the ending just awesome and emotional.
0:50 Michael Kane showing why he won an Oscar. Just a brilliant performance and if you don't shed a tear at it, you have no soul
1:29 the desks make a joker face
U knew 9 years ago 👌
Alfred thinking he failed Bruce and his parents is the most heartbreaking part of all of this. Bruce's sadness turns to rage, but Alfred's sadness never stops being pure, raw grief as he watches his boy put himself at risk daily
I just realized this last night where Batman’s statue is, is where two faces was and we know how there was two sides to his death which keeps the trend with this current “death” Batman died but Wayne lives
Alfred's scene is the most touching and extreme sadness.. You can tell that man loved them all as their own. It is extremely sad... One of the most touching scenes of all time
Always get goosebumps rewatching this.
I like this because its the only movie to date where Batman and Catwoman end up in a relationship.
God I love him so much and never want to let him go., We have to in this best way.
In that scene he was right
"a Hero can be anyone even a man putting his coat on a little boy letting him know the word had not ended"
Out of all the super heroes that have every been bought to life
Batman has remained the very best of them..
Just an imperfect man trying to fix a broken world.
I love the end when alfred sees wayne..he got that cheeky smile, inside he relized he didnt fail bruces parents after all
One best film everything trilogy the dark knight, thank you nolan
watch it again and the ending is superb.... intellectual without going over the top.. the subtleties like the bat signal being fixed, the entrance to the cave, etc
should have included the end credits, give it that complete nolan touch
"Nobody is ever gonna know who saved the entire city."
"They know. It was the Batman."
Not a specific person, but a symbol.
Get the chills Everytime
Amazing story by Christopher Nolan! The most realistic, dark, and emotional story of Batman in modern cinema! Adding elements of humanity and realism to a fictional universe made The Dark Knight Trilogy the greatest superhero film series of all time. Amazing job by Christian Bale! He is not the Batman we wanted, he is the Batman WE DESERVED!! No one else can match his balanced and realistic portrayal of this character!
Having seen countless movies, hands down this has to be the ultimate Batman trilogy, no debate on that
IT"S SUCH A GOOD ENDING. Part of me wishes for another movie, but the chance of it ruining a perfect trilogy out of greed would probably be way to high. It's just that no other superhero franchise has ever gotten close to matching this. It's amazing
Still the best trilogy for me
