All these years I never understood the fear the criminals felt when they see Batman until I saw this film, the sense of paranoia they portrayed is amazingly realistic.
i completely agree. i remember in the dark knight it was a similar intro scene where the signal was scaring the criminals in the sky but it was much more lightly played out where as this one had a whole dark menacing theme to it
Dude looks like a 15 year old boy who got bullied bad then decided to put on a batman suit . It was realistic in a way that looks like he became batman because he read Batman comics . I guess emos relate to that trash but whatever . Opinion opinion opinions. "Get out of my phucking room Alfred you're not my real dad".... *Kurt Cobain music plays* *Bruce goes back to cutting himself*
This is how it was portrayed to you in the old Dark Knight comics. A lot of us wanted this type of portrayal. It's almost akin to Konrad Kurze's (the night haunter) hold over the fear-gripped planet of Nostramo in Warhammer 40k. Very cool vibe.
I get the sense that Warner Bro picked up something from the movie IT. The violins in the music makes it so eerie, reminds me of the violin in the IT movie trailer, also the theme of fear highlighted in the movie. The same fear the kids had for the clown in IT, why not give that energy but instead its Batman that brings in the fear. I love this movie, it really gave a realistic feel of a man losing himself in becoming another scary entity you don't want to ever encounter.
The criminals being afraid that Batman is hiding in the shadows is literally the same fear that children have when they think there’s a monster in their closet. Incredibly done.
you have no idea what you're talking about. you're just throwing a pretentious film school dropout's word salad around. i bet you never watched a hitchcock movie in your life.
The robber backing away from the dark alley in fear of the *possibility* that Batman is there, is everything that I wanted from a Live Action Batman film. This movie was an absolute masterclass of filmmaking.
He admits that as city is big and he can't be everywhere. You can see despite a fear criminal still able to rob a store but as he is still in fear of exploring dark spots of city.
They introduced Batman without even showing him... they didnt want us to know WHO batman is... we all know that... they wanted us to know WHAT batman is... pure genius
"What Batman is"? hahaha, this is not Batman, this is a weirdo dressed as Batman. Look how he makes enough noise to walk around revealing his position, betraying the ninja side of the character and on top of that he lets the criminals flee in his face. that's not batman
I enjoyed the movie overall -- but i found the amount of monologuing to be very blunt... it reminded me of the original bwaaadewunner diwectors cut. not to mention the choice of music... i mean, you can say stuff without literally having to say it.
The way they convey that Batman uses the darkness to instill fear on criminals is amazing. And like Gordon said in the nolan trilogy, he likes to leave the batsignal on to remind them that he is there,
one IF not the best opening to a superhero movie ive seen, the monologe the way gotham looks and feels as if the city itself is a charecter the way the superstitious and cowardly lot shiver when they look at the shadows its perfect.

When Bruce Wayne says " Fear is a tool. When that light hits the sky, it's not just a call, it's a warning" while the theme in the background is just utter perfection. A cinematic masterpiece.

If Warner Brothers give their directors creative freedom like this and not care about connected universes prematurely then they will continue to make masterpieces left and right. This is art.
" Fear...is a tool. They think I'm hiding in the shadows. But *I am the shadows.* " What a great line to express that this Batman was going to be different, more intelligent.
You fight like a younger man, with nothing held back admirable but mistaken, you thinks darkness is your ally? But you merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it, l was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding. The shadows betray you because they belong to me 😎

The more I watch this opening, the more I see Batman displaying the same characteristics of a serial killer. The stalking of his targets, the nocturnal life, the weaponization of fear. I love how the audience is taking a journey with him in his early days of learning to become Batman. And at the conclusion of the film, he realizes he can't continue to use "vengence" any more if he wants to save the city.
Bro how could he be a serial killer, batman rule about not killing is settled since the start of batman. He mainly focused on beating criminals but now batman is gonna be prob focus on saving people and be real super hero
@@ghosthegoated His actions shares a lot of characteristics with a Serial Killer, and he knows it. He doesn't kill exactly because it would make him an equal of his targets.
He will still fight as much as possible. But he will be more open with the people. Make it so that not EVERYONE fears him and that he can actually help them more.
"But when that light hits the sky, it's not just a call. It's a warning." When I heard that line I knew that this movie was made by people who truly understand the Batman, and that I was about to experience something extraordinary.
I love the idea that James Gordan keeps the Signal on for most the Nights, even when he doesn't need Batman, just to remind criminals that there's someone watching. Like The Batman is more of Fear itself, rather than a person with an identity. That's my favorite thing that this movie interpreted with the Batman story.
Love how the movie puts us in the pov of the criminals. It genuinely feels like he could be lurking in any of the shadows at any given moment. Probably one of the coolest entrance scenes in all of cinematic history.
@@trotskyboi8830 It was BORING. A snooze fest. It's slow, uninteresting, and has no business having a nearly 3 hours runtime. And I'm a huge Batman fan.
7:09 - 7:11 when the bells ring is beautiful - this is actually a tribute to the lore of batman - as in the comics batman was watching Zorro in the theatre before his parents were killed. Zorro was always summoned by the ringing of the bells. The fact that this bell rings in the score as batman says ‘we have a signal now, for when Im needed, but when that light hits the sky its not just a call its a warning’ is a perfect metaphor. Perfect writing and understanding of the batman lore
@@sdcard7129 in that way, that ritualistic aspect, adds to another comment someone made on here, toward the top, saying that his stalking, vetting, is similar to how serial killers operate; obvs Batman doesn't kill, and only targets criminals, but the weaponisation of fear and paranoia this creates is amazing
This was the most OG way for Batman to be introduced, I truly don’t think anything could ever top this intro. No pearls, no flashbacks, just Gotham, and the fear the Batman brings with him. Absolutely brilliant sequence
The flashbacks have been done to death. We really didn't need another movie where they show the Waynes dying again. And they understood that, and through that omission, the movie was substantially improved.
Also i love how in the movie Bruce actually questions his own origins and parents, it's much more gray than simply doing it for them. Thomas commited a mistake, but he didn't want a situation like Falcone taking the money of the donation or the heavy corruption in Gotham.
it's the art of cinematics, after looking at the lights he is shown in an angle from above, like he is now below, and slowly looks at the dark, with hesitation because he's too scared to even look
It is the body language, the lighting and the slow movements. You could have had the camera at the back and had him slowly turn and face towards the darkness and he still would look scared but Matt Reeves chose the high angle shot probably so that the focus stays on the face for longer.
I love that Batman has the capability to silence his footsteps, but he announces himself with his footsteps and appears broodingly. That following the opening monologue gave me chills. One of the best theater experiences I've had. Robert really has aced the Batman role.
I love how most scenes feature Batman walking around, either with a purpose, slowly to think, or forcefully like this to make a point. It adds a layer of realism and humanity to the character, which is one thing that the Nolan Batman and his constant disappearing-whenever-we-needed-a-new-scene act lacked.
When he needs to be a silence predator he doesnt make noise, but in this scene, he wants to be listened to make fear to them. Like, "i'm here...face me"
7:46 That’s when I knew…this is one of the greatest opening scenes in a comic book movie. The criminals looking into the dark in fear of the Batman. Just masterful! 👏🏾👏🏾
I love how self-conscious the movie is about how strange the idea of someone dressed like a bat actually is, the cops and thugs even recognize and make fun of it and Matt Reeves repurposed the absurdity of someone dressed up as a bat to be used as something to be afraid of too, Batman appearance isn't as scary when he is on the lights so the thugs and cops aren't scared of Batman appearance itself but still... the idea of what a tormented soul or using the cops words, a freak, lies under that mask is scary by itself, couple this with how Batman portrays itself, he doesn't make facial expressions, doesn't flinch, doesn't cower and doesn't back down by an inch when in a fight and while in a crime scene he doesn't even look at cops around him, like he's sure he can take everyone in that room together if he has to. Those elements combined with his afinnity with the shadows make him a pretty scary symbol.
This comment is exactly why I could take this character seriously for once, I even watched the Lego Batman Movie the day before and realised just how cringey Batman actually is as a concept. But this monologue makes sense of it. Of course it's still kind of silly but Matt Reaves done the best he could.
@@mansolo165 it is silly, the way you felt about the lego movies is the same way o felt about the justice league batman because he isn't near as stoic as his comics or even the cartoon counterpart. The movie went for the unknowing factor to make the idea of batman be scary more believable, it isn't perfect by any means but it's a fresh approach to batman's character and lines up better to how a real life person would probably react.
I always find hard to take Batman seriously . Between the stupid outfit, the name, the fan boys and the absurd feats that are forced even for comic book standarts he just feels very goofy to me. But I liked him on this movie very much as he does not look silly and its actually portrait as a person not a know at all that is never wrong.

I will never forget the experience of watching this at the cinema, it's a masterpiece, when I saw this at the cinema I suddenly have goosebumps and at that point, I know that this is the best interpretation of Batman itself
How? Catwoman easily manipulates him with her womanly charms, which just goes against his entire character... Batman just let her control him, that's some modern bs right there Not only did they ruin him, they ruined Catwoman! She would NEVER play the victim, Catwoman is supposed to actually be an "Independent" female, instead, she's just some poorly written trash excuse of a character Batman beyond had more symbolism in its INTRO, there is nothing in this new batman that connects or has true meaning in life, it only connects to soft brained indoctrinated collectivists. Edit: You will never connect to anything awe-inspiring if you somehow convinced yourself this trash has any of batmans moral traits, they have completely disgraced his character and I bet they'll kill him off and replace him with a minority. (Not saying minorities are bad, but that replacing our loved icons with a minority just to seem moral or have a false sense of morality, then it's extremely infuriating, man should have a set of symbols to connect to, and they're discarding that just to appease the soft brained audience )
Mans set of symbols are hardwired in the Psyche, so don't try and act like man created it to oppress anyone. It's the collective unconsciousness, so don't try and argue with that.
Watched this on theaters was a complete mind-blowing experience, but I cannot stop of rewatching that part where Reeves focused in the fear that Batman causes to the thugs. The photography, Giaccino's score, the atmosphere, all the pieces combined created a masterpiece entrance.
@@shanet5604 The movie was hit on box office (earned 3 times or more what it costs), critically aclaimed and with good reception from the majority of people. I would pay for watch your face when the movie itself starts to earn some awards (like sound design and photography, for sure)
I love this one, how the Batman horrified them so much that when the light shines they just stare at the darkness thinking he’s going to come. It’s genius the Batman is so feared just seeing his light makes them wet themselves
That's what sets him apart from Bales version say. This isn't a Batman that strikes silently from out of nowhere... You hear him coming, you know he's going to hurt you and you can't stop him. Isn't that a frightening thought?
I remember in the theater thinking this was gonna be a descent Batman film. It turned out to be a masterpiece that respected Batman as an iconic symbol and characters. This opening scene had me going through an ecstacy of fearful and satisfying emotions, that’s when I knew Matt Reeves gets why Batman is such a beloved character in comic books. This film was everything I a long time fan of Batman wanted, a psychological mystery-thriller that goes into depth with Batman’s motivation, trauma, and grit. This is THE BATMAN.
Matt Reeves helmed this movie with such finesse. Him, and the entire development team with him truly understands this character, and my mind was blown. This entire movie, and specifically this scene felt like it was ripped right out of a comic. I grew up with, and collected Batman comic books. This film amazes me.
I feel like it's the first Batman film to actually go a long way into portraying Batman as a detective first and foremost. It's also one that got Gotham absolutely perfect without straying into the realm of ridiculous.
One thing fun about this, everyone knows the Batman can't possibly be literally in every shadowy place, he can't literally be everywhere at once, but he could still be in any one of those shadowy places. And the uncertainty element makes it all the more terrifying for them.

I love how Matt Reeves takes its time to build up every scene, it gives a dramatic feeling, such an elegant filmmaking. No shaky camera, steady shots. Impecable. Such a noir scene, the music, the strings, the cinematography. This movie is a filmmaking class.
@@スハカサ The sentence you are referring to is not 'You can literally take this movie'. It is 'You can literally take this movie and print it as a comic book'. The word "take" is defined by Oxford languages as 'to remove someone or something from a particular place', or 'carry or bring with one; convey' (senses 2, 3). In this case the particular place is the hard drive of a computer or camera. 'Convey' certainly covers this situation as well. The word 'literally' simply means 'in a literal or exact manner'. Most definitions of said word also include an informal sense with their formal one. This is because the purpose of language is to convey information, much like digital information might be conveyed from hard drive to physical copy. The purpose of spoken or written language is not to maintain itself or achieve some arbitrary standard of correctness. So yes, one can literally take a movie and print it out. After all, a movie can only be said to literally exist as digital (or, very rarely, analogue) information. Simply export the footage and print it out, select key frames, and arrange as needed. To conclude, I would advise you to stop acting pedantic. On some level you must understand that such a minor grammatical error (and one that has so little to do with the core idea expressed in the comment you are supposedly replying to) is irrelevant and not worth being critical over. There is enough foolishness and negativity in the world already.
I like how instead of focusing on one villain they built a world with plenty villains and characters. It's realistic but also colorful and reminds me of the comics where Batman could take a turn and meet some old villain at any time. In the next one I hope they show even more gangster characters and focus more on crime
7:46 I don’t know why but this shot alone is both amazing and terrifying. The lighting is shown on the mask giving us that creepy smile but underneath that you can tell that the guy was terrified especially when he started to look into the dark street.
Good look, it’s also interesting how the mask itself has a smiley face design but it’s distorted enough to also look like someone’s face curling in fear

Pattinson's portrayal of Batman, and especially Bruce, touched my heart. Everyone's work in this film touched me, in fact. Every person outdid themselves, it's abundantly clear that this film was written and produced by people who truly understand who Batman is. This is the closest that we'll ever get to having a live action of the Batman Animated Series, and that means so much to me.
EXACTLY MY POINT!. I can actually picture Battinson fighting Ra´s Al ghul in the Demon Quest or Clayface in Feat of Clay. For the 2nd one i would like some 30-40 min of Batman improving himself by traveling the world for 2 years. Meeting Zatara, Lady Shiva, Bronze Tiger or WildCat. Just to return to Gotham and see that nothing changed.
Exactly. I feel like people who work in this movie understand Batman, so they know how to make their own spin on him without losing the essences of what make Batman the Batman.
I love how Batman feels more human in this movie. He's not doing unrealistic crazy acrobatics while fighting, everything felt really real in this movie if that makes sense 😂. The riddler was also so damn good.
I love how sloppy the first Riddler kill is. He doesn’t hit him with a clean one hit kill like we usually see. It’s also way more chaotic and clumsy than any kill we’ve seen from any Batman villain. Such as the way he underestimates his own strength and falls on top of the mayor after the first hit as if he’s surprised it only took one hit for him to fall. And then how he accidentally flings the weapon across the room. And of course Paul Danos performance ties it all together from the sounds he makes after each impact. Also his mannerisms such as his breathing after attacking him as if he’s trying to calm himself down from the rush of shock over what he just did. Such an incredible performance and one of the best CBM villains I’ve seen in a long time.
I’m pretty sure he threw the weapon on purpose. It’s the clue to his whole plan, the carpet tucker that would of allowed Batman to stop it in time had he pieced it together. I could be wrong tho need to watch it again.
@@HeavyC89 whether it flew across the room and left blood on the floor wouldn't matter. They found the carpet Tucker no matter what. Batman piecing together what was under Riddler's carpet had nothing to do with whether or not Riddler accidentally tosses the murder weapon.

One of the best versions and up there with Keaton's portrayal, for sure. It's like Pattinson was made for this role. So glad Affleck passed on making this movie.
The opening monologue is the best opening to any movie I've seen. It really sets up how Gotham is and what the feel of the movie would be going forward. Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson have done a great job
I love how he's not beating up the bad guys for justice or peace or honor or any other noble endeavor; he's beating them up because he's pissed off and needs someone to take it out on. He keeps reclaiming vengeance for his parents murder every night instead of seeking actual justice, and the whole movie is about him realizing that he's come a lot closer to being like the Riddler in his quest for violence against the corrupt, and the process of him accepting a higher calling as Batman to actually do good for the city and protect it in a more substantial way than just going out at night and beating up street thugs.
He’s beating them up for all those reasons. Obviously it’s personal to him and it was more about his frustration in the beginning but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t about justice as well, of course it was. Yes he needed to learn how to channel his rage better and be a healthier and productive Batman and Bruce Wayne but I think this idea that he was ever close to being like the riddler is ridiculous and mad corny.
I don't think its likable that much at all to be honest. It's kind of superficial how the goons are portrayed as thoughtless idiots to be trounced with limited glimpses of their underlying humanity. Batman attacks the symptoms of societal dysfunction without taking time to reflect on or remediate the causes. Just portrayed as an angry, entitled, over-priviledged white guy in this without taking the time to explore the psychology driving the behaviors.
@@Jackholiday1025The riddler thought they were friends, the story is literally him using riddler to uncover corruption in gotham they are two sides of the same coin
this opening does a wonderful job of creating contrasts: riddler is an unknown terror, his location revealed to the audience whilst his presence is unacknowledged within the film, creating this sense of helplessness and anticipation that builds until he suddenly screams and murders the mayor. Batman, by contrast, is known to both the audience and the characters within the film, yet his location is kept hidden, so you really do feel the paranoia of the characters - this film is I think the first time batman has ever felt genuinely scary on screen, he has a presence that is unmatched, and the film still does this whilst managing to make him compelling as a character and even having an arc

Exactly. It's not that he wants to try... it's that he HAS TO. Batman is his coping mechanism to try to make something good come out of his parents death. To him, if he doesn't try to fix Gotham, it means his patents died for nothing.
I'll always remember the chills I felt instantly upon hearing the music and the red logos. I had lost my grandmother a two days before and went to the funeral the day after I watched The Batman. It's always gonna have a special place in my heart.
I love that Pattinson just speaks. A gloomy, light tone sure. But not forced out, just muttering in the dark. Perfect concept of Batman. "Hidden in the chaos is the element" - love it.
Perfect. The cinematography. The music. The overall look of Gotham on Halloween night, drenched in rain with a little narration that establishes the noir vibe. Just perfect. 👌💯
All these years I never understood the fear the criminals felt when they see Batman until I saw this film, the sense of paranoia they portrayed is amazingly realistic.
i completely agree. i remember in the dark knight it was a similar intro scene where the signal was scaring the criminals in the sky but it was much more lightly played out where as this one had a whole dark menacing theme to it
Batman Begins also shows it well
Dude looks like a 15 year old boy who got bullied bad then decided to put on a batman suit .
It was realistic in a way that looks like he became batman because he read Batman comics .
I guess emos relate to that trash but whatever . Opinion opinion opinions.
"Get out of my phucking room Alfred you're not my real dad"....
*Kurt Cobain music plays*
*Bruce goes back to cutting himself*
arkham games show it too with the goon banter. them being in terror talking amongst one another. lets you FEEL like you're the knight
This is how it was portrayed to you in the old Dark Knight comics. A lot of us wanted this type of portrayal. It's almost akin to Konrad Kurze's (the night haunter) hold over the fear-gripped planet of Nostramo in Warhammer 40k. Very cool vibe.
This scene will never not be addicting. The Batman introduction is just pure perfection.
It’s amazing.

Same. It's almost like you feel a sense of dread
It’s because that part of the soundtrack sounds so sinister. Like a serial killer approaching a victim
Even with his face fully obscured, you can feel the blood draining from it as he looks at that signal

Perfect explanation to how satisfied I was with this intro.
He admits that as city is big and he can't be everywhere. You can see despite a fear criminal still able to rob a store but as he is still in fear of exploring dark spots of city.

There's a reason there are a lot of parallels between Batman and the Riddler.

Micheal Giachhino. Take a bow
I never thought about it and you're right. This whole movie is a great homage to early Batman.
Lmaooo pearls
Also i love how in the movie Bruce actually questions his own origins and parents, it's much more gray than simply doing it for them. Thomas commited a mistake, but he didn't want a situation like Falcone taking the money of the donation or the heavy corruption in Gotham.
I love The Dark Knight trilogy and MCU but Battinson is way better

7:46 I love how even with a mask on, and a mask that's even smiling, you can tell how scared this dude is
yeah, his physical gestures say it all.
Good actor!
it's the art of cinematics, after looking at the lights he is shown in an angle from above, like he is now below, and slowly looks at the dark, with hesitation because he's too scared to even look
It is the body language, the lighting and the slow movements. You could have had the camera at the back and had him slowly turn and face towards the darkness and he still would look scared but Matt Reeves chose the high angle shot probably so that the focus stays on the face for longer.
Facts bro!
@@andrewomahony9260 Yeah, This is one of my favorite things about Rob's batman. The methodical, imposing walk.
Not only silence his footsteps, but to make impossible silent getaways too (like when he Ghosted Gordon in the old Manor room).
When he needs to be a silence predator he doesnt make noise, but in this scene, he wants to be listened to make fear to them. Like, "i'm here...face me"
how does he silence his footsteps when he's wearing a metal boots. or is it because of the boots hes wearing?
Matt Reeves perfectly captured how Gotham is supposed to feel and look like. It’s the best Gotham portrayed on the big screen since Tim Burton’s IMO.

It feels like the average big city in 2022
7:46 That’s when I knew…this is one of the greatest opening scenes in a comic book movie.
Nah honestly at night, even Batman's appearance is straight up terrifying
I always find hard to take Batman seriously . Between the stupid outfit, the name, the fan boys and the absurd feats that are forced even for comic book standarts he just feels very goofy to me. Edit: You will never connect to anything awe-inspiring if you somehow convinced yourself this trash has any of batmans moral traits, they have completely disgraced his character and I bet they'll kill him off and replace him with a minority. You can literally take this movie and print it as a comic book. It's exactly like watching a comic book come to life.
how to take 'literally' take this movie huh?

I swear he captures Batman the best way possible. The voice, his not-so-bulky physique, that desperation and feeling of loneliness in his eyes. Best Batman imo.

Shadow(Narrating):"8:18&8:33"
Yeah- I feel they captured what a young Batman would be like perfectly.
I think a bulky Bruce is when he’s in his mid-thirties as the Dark Knight and has started heavy training and gear. But this is him trying out, getting used to his dark side and getting into the thrill of the hunt.
@@117Industriesthat's a usual misconception that Batman is bulky. He's lean, he has to be nimble. He's a ninja, not a brawler as portrayed by Affleck. The physique Bale had in Begins was perfect for him. Rob is in acceptable shape, too. Anything more bulky as seen in BvS is unrealistic.
@@Abhi-wh3ik Because you don’t have 2 hours a day to spare for training and can’t keep on top of the tren and anabol cycles when you spend 14 or more hours a night beating up bad guys, 2 or so in the bat cave, 1 hour eating, 1 hour doing business admin, and roughly ~6 hours sleeping.
It’s a little detail but I love that they actually acknowledge that Batman can’t be everywhere at once. No other film has done that as far as I know, he can’t stop everyone.
I love the scale of this Gotham. Every other Gotham previously was made to feel small compared to it
Something the Nolan movies were missing. Sure Batman gets bested by the Joker and Bane, but we don't see the fatal flaws of Batman being one man in a huge city such as that. In the beginning of Dark Knight we see one guy walk away from a drug deal, and it just doesn't hit the same as this opening.

The scene where Bruce is in the hospital talking to Alfred about his father is probably the best Alfred/Bruce moment on screen
He’s taking his anger out. And like you said, it’s his first kill. Watch the end of the movie again.
I’m pretty sure he threw the weapon on purpose. It’s the clue to his whole plan, the carpet tucker that would of allowed Batman to stop it in time had he pieced it together. I could be wrong tho need to watch it again.
@@HeavyC89 that’s a really good point, yeah I for sure need to watch again
@@HeavyC89 whether it flew across the room and left blood on the floor wouldn't matter. They found the carpet Tucker no matter what. Batman piecing together what was under Riddler's carpet had nothing to do with whether or not Riddler accidentally tosses the murder weapon.

whos rewatching this masterpiece on thursday, october 31st?
Hence by the end of the movie, where he's literally leading the people of Gotham through the darkness, it also shows the humanity that Batman has.
Love a hero with a bit of actual emotion, if only Superman could display this level of real aggression
this opening does a wonderful job of creating contrasts: riddler is an unknown terror, his location revealed to the audience whilst his presence is unacknowledged within the film, creating this sense of helplessness and anticipation that builds until he suddenly screams and murders the mayor.
I think Ben Affleck's Batman did a better job of being really scary. And virtually every film adaptation of Batman this century has had an arc for the character, it's no longer unusual or unexpected.
@@arthursouza7 definitely your opinion but I will have to disagree Ben was a decent batman but we rearly so him put fear into anyone they made him to goofy
George Clooneys Batman was the scariest. He brought such a intensity to the role.
