The boys in the trench would need SCUBA gear if you tried that down here where I live. Water table is only 7 feet deep here. And out where my parents live I think its only 3-4 feet deep.
I dont know how you continued on with that trench with the drop off right behind you, I would have painted myself in a corner and been screwed. I was hoping that part was in the video lol great work brother.

The fact that you said watch for a color change in the soil is important. We just dug 400' of soil to put 4 4" sch40 pipie for cable. What is not normal is seeing a black coal slag coal layer left from steam engines then sand above that then 3/4" stone on top of that. We did see some wood on top of we think concrete electrical duct (750 DC). We didn't dig to find out we were low enough. Thanks for your info. We put tape above most times when we direct bury cables. But now we use pvc for safety and pulling.

About 19-20 feet deep. This was the east side of the job the west had much larger rock.
I'm a labor working transmission pipeline....hand dug a lot of bell holes.....them slopes look to vertical...can still cave in an hurt someone

Had a support ho pulling the spoils away. he did not always get enough.
