FYI to people saying no shoring! Shoring system includes Sloping (depending on soil type, 1.5 to 1 type C, 1 to 1 Type B, or .75 to 1 Type A, Trench Boxes or Shield, Timber Shoring, Hydraulic Shoring, etc. Anything 20 feet deep or more must be approved by registered professional Engineer in that state. They say they had letter, but I don't see how they could classify it as type A soil....Most soil is type C and B.
Done it for 12 hours a day, on night shift to boot. 8km long tailings dam for a mine in the middle of nowhere, had to stay in the machine for the entire shift, piss off the tracks and hope you don't have to take a dump. 8 hours a day is more than enough, 6 even better, spending too much time in the seat really makes you hate doing it. I love all the armchair quarterbacks in the comment section though, as if nobody but them has ever dealt with slopes and Worksafe/OSHA compliance.

The pipe along the trench, it looks like you are well pointing? but the ground seems very dry and stable. So if that isn't a well-point, what is the white pipe?
They are well points every 40 feet and 40 feet deep. They ran for 3 weeks before we started to dig. the water table was at 8 feet before the wells were installed.
After hooking up a bucket to a different bucket you should go through the motions and open and then swing it closed too many have fallen off and have killed people. Just a thought
also, if it is not locked, when unlocked, the first pin has a saftey mechanisim that latches, and will not unlatch unless the coupler is locked then unlocked again, so if you grab a bucket and "dont lock it" on accident, to take it off, you have to then lock it, then unlock it, because the safety mechanisim that is in place especially for when "people" forget to hit the switch or whatever the case may be

I remember digging with that same bucket..or one just like it..my brother and I had a argument over the finished slope ratio..he said 3/4 to 1 or 1 to 1..i said no way..we measured..I was right!1 closer to 1/2 to 1 to 3/4 to 1..teicherts trapezoidal buckets are 3/4 to 1. still,in this day and age,you still have to get a engineer to sign off on the jobsite to do 3/4 to 1. you do a nice job of moving over just a scootch and not letting all your bucket teeth line up. thus you still have a beautiful ditch but not cutting it as steep as the bucket would if you did
Had the same argument with my Forman. Told them you want me to dig it right get me the right bucket. Just falls on def ears. Just do the best I can with what I have.

Nice machine but sixty plus hours a week make for a "Can you paint this thing blue or green" as it would get very tiresome. I can see putting some paint on the buckets so you can see where you left it at when changing/LOL. nice work keeping the "duff" off the trench people

It was bought from an auction. And I am not the only operator that runs it., we may have some less than caring operators. The pins were not that bad the last time I ran the rig.
I ran a 385 back in 05 and I still think it is the best rig I have ever run. It was set up with a medium stick that had a total of 53 feet of reach. was gigging storm drain, sets were 30 foot long.
Hey my superintendent said that he’s never ran a machine that big and that it would be cheaper to cut 10 feet or 15 feet with scrapers and then dig it with a smaller machine. I told him I was pretty sure that your company owns that machine and doesn’t have to rent it, therefore it is cheaper to dig that deep with an 870 than to bring two or 3+ guys in on scrapers. Do you have anything to add to that?
Yes, the company owns the 870G. We also have a dirt division. They did considered to use scrapers. A cost analyses was done and the chose to have it dug with the excavator. We would have had to rent the scrapers to move the dirt. Also if we had gone to a smaller rig and set it down 10' it would not have had the reach to toss the dirt past the dewatering line. Also at the time we started this project, wheeled rigs were sinking in the ground so all rigs needed to have tracks. There was one road that allowed a loader to bring Rock to a rock box that the excavator would dig out of. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I have only used it on 2 projects. it is hard to find projects that require rigs that big. I have a crew I stick with been with the same company 10+ years now. I am very well taken care of.

Besides doing 5 yrs locating utilities i was a CNC machinist for 20yrs and standing on my feet for 10-12 hrs a day. I think i would have rather got into heavy equipment operating.

Matt Cooper i liked the job, just too many tickets and not enough time in the day to get to them all, especally when we had up to 4 utility companies to locate for on every ticket, Gas, electric, phone, CATV, sometimes i had 2 electric companies on the locate, had to read all the blueprints and then get out of the truck, do some paint & flag, stand around and scratch my ass thinking that doesn’t look right and then back in the truck to look at prints again 😂🤣. Then have 50 tickets every day and naturally it was the locators fault because you didn’t get them all done and you worked from the butt crack of dawn to dusk 6-7 days a week and you still got your ass chewed. Oh and dont forget about overnight emergencies you have to run on and then get 3-4 hours rest and then start another long day after a long night.
@@TheLeverMonkey we had to tie in to existing storm drain one time that started out 38ft in the ground and some of the last few ft we had 2ft of fill over it. The beginning part we cut out with the pan so the hoes weren't digging in but 8-10ft. The camera doesn't do much justice on the size of that machine. I run a 450 Deere and it felt like it was a camper swinging back and forth.
Yea at 180,000 lbs. It is a bit different feel. We have a few labor forman that think size means nothing and any operator can just jump on it. If they only understood what damage a unexperienced operator can do to a rig like that.

How is anyone legally allowed to work down there in a v trench that's steeper than Mt Everest? I'd be cutting a 4.9 bottom bench then 3.2 steps all the way to the top in my country before anyone gets in.
They are made by Hitachi or in a joint venture I don’t know if they are exactly the same only know that Deere uses there own engines in smaller ones. The big ones like you see here have a Isuzu engines.

Hi Sean, yes i know but in Ireland I always see lots of New Holland and MF. UK I don’t exactly but I think it is almost the same and Caseih Fendt. I come from Holland here almost same story 1 NH 2 JD 3 Fendt 4 Caseih 5 MF. Sometimes you see a old JD wheel loader but that’s it. Case wheel loaders and excavators i see them very often but that will be the same in Ireland I think.

@@Jacob-64 I would agree that the engineer would not go in the trench. But it is a typical trench for this area it is a high B/A type. And I do ignore the office if I feel it is not safe for the guys to go in. And yes I would and have been in my own trenches and felt perfectly safe.
No way banks are not sloped no ground or soil without trenchboxes would pass osha indiana like most states is type c soil somebody making dollars for this death trap trench boxes triple stacked backfilled up 10 ft behind pipe layer plates in front an. Different type soils from California to Illinois. A engineer has signed off as operator has said cal osha was on site. I would be willing to bet cal osha is a lot harder to deal with then other states considering no one likes to put there signature on anything. Remember cal osha makes most of it money on fines. Looking at material there is no slough off or cracking and looks stable. The only thing would be another ladder for pipe laying crew. Just my thoughts

What you lack to notice is that there is a dewatering pipe on the right. I have to throw the dirt over it if a clod falls on the dewatering pipe it breaks and floods the ditch. So to prevent it a less than full bucket is required.

Very unsafe trench to have guys performing work in with no shielding or shoring to protect them. You guys better read up on trench safety , but SAFE at all. I do underground utilities myself an there’s no way in hell I would be down in that trench with no Trench box or shoring, people DIE from trenches collapsing all the time.

Had to go with less than full bucketloads due to the dewatering pipeline that can break if you look at it wrong. My Forman dropped the laser receiver on it and broke it.

We had to dry the dirt that came out of the ditch to be able to make compaction. I was getting about 500-600 feet a day.

The wells were in for a month at this point in the dig. and water was 2 feet below the ditch.

On your well points do you have a submersible pump in each well point or how does this set up work very interested and smooth operation .
There was a 1hp pump in each well point. The water was pumped to a trench that took the water 1/2 mile away.

So the pumps were set about 20’ deeper than the trench to lower the water table. That way we did not have to deal with the water in the trench.

It was the beginning of a subdivision. All the future subdivisions will gravity feed to this pipe line.

How is anyone legally allowed to work down there in a v trench that's steeper than Mt Everest? I'd be cutting a 4.9 bottom bench then 3.2 steps all the way to the top in my country before anyone gets in.
Just different rules that we fallow. 100% legal here. We have a engineering letter allowing us to dig like that.

What kind of reputation have john Deere excavators ? Never driven one .you do not see them in the UK.
They are made by Hitachi or in a joint venture I don’t know if they are exactly the same only know that Deere uses there own engines in smaller ones.
The big ones like you see here have a Isuzu engines.

Hi Sean, yes i know but in Ireland I always see lots of New Holland and MF. UK I don’t exactly but I think it is almost the same and Caseih Fendt.
I come from Holland here almost same story 1 NH 2 JD 3 Fendt 4 Caseih 5 MF.
Sometimes you see a old JD wheel loader but that’s it. Case wheel loaders and excavators i see them very often but that will be the same in Ireland I think.

never get away with this in Chicago or Illinois with no trench boxes. Ladder to get out of the hole?. Sand can sheer off the sides and that guy on the bottom would be buried. OSHA would run them out of town on rail.

@@Jacob-64 I would agree that the engineer would not go in the trench. But it is a typical trench for this area it is a high B/A type. And I do ignore the office if I feel it is not safe for the guys to go in. And yes I would and have been in my own trenches and felt perfectly safe.

Different type soils from California to Illinois. A engineer has signed off as operator has said cal osha was on site. I would be willing to bet cal osha is a lot harder to deal with then other states considering no one likes to put there signature on anything. Remember cal osha makes most of it money on fines. Looking at material there is no slough off or cracking and looks stable. The only thing would be another ladder for pipe laying crew. Just my thoughts

What you lack to notice is that there is a dewatering pipe on the right. I have to throw the dirt over it if a clod falls on the dewatering pipe it breaks and floods the ditch. So to prevent it a less than full bucket is required.

Very unsafe trench to have guys performing work in with no shielding or shoring to protect them. You guys better read up on trench safety , but SAFE at all. I do underground utilities myself an there’s no way in hell I would be down in that trench with no Trench box or shoring, people DIE from trenches collapsing all the time.

Would be left behind with those half scoops lol shorter sets and full buckets
Had to go with less than full bucketloads due to the dewatering pipeline that can break if you look at it wrong. My Forman dropped the laser receiver on it and broke it.
