    Iceborne Fatalis is still one of the greatest fights in a video game I’ve ever seen. Despite the 30 minute timer sucking, the natural difficulty of the fight was absolutely perfect and forced you to use all your tools. Dark souls may have me pumping my fist at beating a boss, but Fatalis had me screaming my lungs out when I got my first kill.

    • @joshmay2944

      Same here friend. I fought him every day like 6-8 hours a day for a week before finally getting him down with IG, by targeting his head with diving wyvern. After that first victory I went on to beat him probably a dozen more times with much less of a struggle. Mastering that fight, which is what was required for victory, is one of my absolute most gratifying experiences in gaming. Nameless King is pretty high up there as well but Fatalis is in a league of his own.

    The pin in IB is also a nod to lure stating that Fatails melts hunters, armor and all, onto his chest to strength it. It’s also noted he stands on two legs to mock hunters. That’s also probably why he stands as a part of his pin. In short, he’s the Hunter Hunter who becomes strong by wearing the materials of the opponents he defeats.

      I dont think he wears it be strong, i think its more of a mockery and kinda serves to show him as the antithesis to hunters. Where hunters respect all life and only take life when absolutely neccessary, and even after doing so make sure to use every piece of it to improve themselves so they can better serve the balance of nature via carefully crafted weapons and armor. Fatalis on the other hand, despises the very concept of life and thus especially hates the hunters who seek to keep it's balance stable, mocking their way of keeping balance, crudely applying materials willy nilly to his own body, armors that dont hold a candle to his own hide, an unnecessary destruction of resources and descration of his fallen foes. Fatalis doesnt become strong by wearing his opponents, hes not a hunter of hunters, that title is too specific for him. Hes an enemy to the very balance of nature itself, the only thing in which it seeks to gain from 'armoring' itself being to mock those that would seek to preserve that balance

      You know, it perfectly aligns with hunters themselves. In MH, hunters are, like, one of the smallest animals in the whole world *period,* even with their weapons they're just a tiny balls of whatever for almost any other creature, but hunters are technically on top of the food chain, consistently defeating the opponents magnitudes larger than themselves. One hunter is capable of defeating an Elder dragon, which in their world equals to killing a natural disaster. In MH universe, size *does NOT* matter. Knowing this, Fatalis becomes actually viable as the strongest force in the world, probably being able to explode colossal Dalamadurs in pieces with ease and tearing island-sized Zorahs apart or something.
      That's also why Fatalis is an actual full-blown villian of the franchise. He does one thing that all good villians do: he, while being malicious, reflects our heroes.

    I feel like without the 30 minute timer, a significant portion of the fight feeling actually difficult and tense would be completely lost.
    The monsters of MH usually only feel "hard" when you have to actively fight them the entire time, if you want to play safe, you absolutely can most of the time and this makes it VERY hard for a monster to down you unless they have some serious bullshit moves. There needs to be a time constraint to make you actually fight the damn thing instead of looking at it without any consequence. Fatalis, like Alatreon before him felt like a much more satisfying "dance" than most regular hunts simply because you HAVE to actively engage both of these monsters and learn their behaviour and patterns, actually becoming efficient at dealing enough damage/part break to take them down proper without letting you run around aimlessly while not getting punished for it.
    When me and my then squad took him down for the first time it came down to 28:39 or something, incredibly tight, but honestly it was the greatest feeling and I feel like the fight would have felt infinitely less satisfying without the time limit being there.

    • @demonminer8093
      @demonminer8093 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      that is an interesting, and even valid, take on the time limit. To expand it, if you bloated the health values of any monster so that they just flat out took 50 minutes to kill, instead of the current 15-30 minutes they usually take, it would become incredibly painstaking. The panic of nearly running out would still be present, but it would feel worse because you just spent nearly an hour on a single hunt, and lost it. And then when you win, you're just tired of fighting it.

    • @echoq7594
      @echoq7594 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@demonminer8093 Well yeah, usually nothing takes more than 30 minutes to kill even if you fuck around a little bit doing nothing. Most single monster hunts are over under the 15min mark, some of the harder ones might take nearly 30 minutes the first time, but usually they last a comfortable 20-25, less with time.
      Having to fight a monster for 50 minutes straight would sure be a nightmare though. I think the decision to limit the timer to 30 was definately the better choice in this case and lets be honest, most people just lost to carting instead of the time limit anyway in this fight haha.

    • @vitriolicAmaranth
      @vitriolicAmaranth ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The timer (including the completion time for speedrunning at the end of quests) is actually an ingenious bit of low-effort difficulty management. The fact that there is not only a (very lenient, most of the time) time limit, but that you are being timed and having your time recorded, puts on the pressure to perform, but the fact that you actually have a pretty long time to do the hunt means that if you're struggling you can swallow your pride and go slowly.

    • @echoq7594
      @echoq7594 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The thing I like about Fatalis the most is the lore behind it.
    Some of my favorite lore involving Fatty is the giant great sword in Poke village. This giant sword implies that at some point in history, a Fatalis was slain before. Theres also the fact that this sword regenerates after mining from it, which could mean that the sword and scales and stones off of it are all still alive.
    This also leads into the theories that the gear we make from Fatalis parts are also alive which can explain why they so strong. (In Iceborne at least, in the older games the fatty family's gear was a mixed bag depending on which version of fatty and the game.)
    I really believe that half of what makes Fatalis really stand out is the lore. I think world did a poor job explaining the things what Really makes him special, such as the fact that Fatalis only shows up when humanity starts to have to much of a grip over nature, and it specifically targeting humanity could hint toward it being sentient. Without the lore, hes just a dragon that likes to breath a lot of fire, I prefer Alatreon over fatty any way.

    That got me thinking. I WAS having fun. Only a game like Monster Hunter could give you a challenge like that and have it still feel fair, and not just that, make it something I want to play more of.
    I want to see 4U's G-rank crimson fatty back again, too. His heat waves and the sun flares made him really visually impressive. I hope later Monster Hunter games give Fatalis the respect he deserves and not just throw in fatty back as content padding.

    tell me whatever you want but I love old Fatalis.
    it's slow and easy to predict, but that's the point.
    you have to be perfect.
    it's attacks are all easy to avoid, but if you mess up you're dead.
    I won't deny it's really that hard, but it's Monster Hunter 's combat to the max.
    learing patterns and punish them, the "dance" between you and the Monsters and Fatalis forced you to follow it.

      I understand that with White and normal fatalis, they have a unique and amazing arena to use with.
      But man, the crimson one? Is the worst, has the normal fatalis theme and same pattern attacks (also, he cannot move is head to launch strategic fireballs) only has a blast effect in the claw, launch metros and canalyze to launch more meteoros. The worst thing, the map, he resides in Ingel Island where you fight some EX deviants, Alatreon, Akantor and some challenging hunts, losing a lot of fun or challenging of fighting him

      @@beerhoz4533 which is EXACTLY why they gave crimson a new variant in 4U. They gave him a new theme, a new design, new attacks involving heatwaves and lava waves. Regular crimson in comparison just sucks as you've pointed out. Idk why they didn't bring this variant to GU and only use his regular boring version
      4U crimson Fatalis variant and 4U White Fatalis are my favorite. Iceborne fatalis I don't count cause it's just in a league of its own

    Actually, crimson has also an armor mode in MHFU. It activates when he goes in rage mode and dissipates once he calms down, while White Fatalis activates his armor mode at 50% HP and keeps it on until he drops below 25%. Also, for both the armor mode covers their entire body. All their hitzones become 10%, even their head. The best strategies were to bring bombs, cluster shots, gunlance shelling or dragon element on their head (bow) since the first three did fixed damages ignoring the hitzone values and the dragon hitzone on the head remained unchanged even when in armor mode.

    25:15: Actually there is a way, though it will only 100% work for one person, the rest are just going to have to hug the spot and hope for the best. The moment he charges the 360 you can attach yourself and avoid all damage along with weakening the chest. Clutch Claw the OPPOSITE arm of his fire attack (if he's charging towards his right arm, go for the left) and stay there until his attack is done. Make sure you have plenty of stamina to hold on at least up to 3 seconds. Once you get the hang of it, that attack is the easiest to dodge in his kit. Hope this helps, good luck!

    Remember the first solo fight against a Fatalis is because he's the final boss of funny egg subplot because one of the egg we delivered hatched.
    Also to explain the difference between the two crimson fatalis, maybe the first is not completely adult because he hatched not long ago but there's also a fan theory that the G-rank one is the fatalis from the first game.

  • @InfernoScythe

    So for the first MonHun game the highest sharpness was only green and all meele weapons would just bounce off of him, fighting him meele was suicide. So in order to take him down you would need a heavy bowgun that can use cluster shot lvl 2 (2 was the highest lvl). Back then you could only have a set amount, 10 or 20 I think but you could hold 99 of the combined parts. Wyvern claw and something else and you could buy both parts at the endgame shop.
    So the idea is to have four players use heavy bowgun and Rathalos armor for attack up to blow him the hell up with cluster shots till you repel/kill him. It was really the fastest way to kill him under 15 minutes.
    Cluster also back then shot different as it was just a bullet that would split into smaller clusters once it hit on impact. No mortar like stance so it was a pretty OP ammo backthen.

    In-Universe the reason why G-Rank Crismon Fatalis exists is because you canonically don't kill Black Fatalis. You repel him and send him to the volcano. That's why one horn is "Overgrown". It's not overgrown, it's what Fatalis' horn would look like if he kept growing. He's burning hot and glowing because he's extremely enraged at another hunter coming at him.

    while I get that you only go for the main series titles, especially with something like fatalis I kinda wish you wouldve spoken about zenith white fatalis from frontier and fatalis from monster hunter stories too. The zenith white fatty is one of the hardest monsters to ever exist in the franchine, even for frontier standards, and in stories he was one of the unexpected secret dlc bosses that had huge aoe one shots and was pretty challenging if you go unprepared, especially with his ultimate attack when he is close to death

  • @nahfhey2766
    @nahfhey2766 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fatalis was possible to to finish in a single run in the First MH game. You had to have 4 players with heavy bowguns (perferably the fatalis heavy bowgun) and you had everyone bring Clust lv2 and the matierals to craft clust lvl2 and the combo books to get 100% craft rate. You could bring 99 of both materials (small bone husk and wyvern claw, both of which were able to be purchased from the merchant).

    My problem with iceborne fatalis is not that he has a massive health pool, or that he hits hard, but its not tight enough.
    His hitboxes are decent but because of how tight the fight is, the occasional hit/death due to bad hitboxes stings WAYY MORE than it normally does, and the fact he sometimes just attacks in a way as to not give you any chance to do anything, and you die a bullshit death, that really sours the whole 'only the best players' thing, because at this point it stops being about skill and instead its about luck....
    Edit: 19:40 Also moments like that, simply being attached to him will pin you for no reason, even though i wasnt under him
