Just found out about this band about 6 months ago, still obsessed. I havnt been able to turn any of my friends on to them yet, but I dont mind having them to myself either.
I worked at the F Club in Leeds in 1980 and Andrew was behind the dj desk looking fantastic. A club full of punks and a guy who looked like a vampire playing cool music, great times I will never forget. I was at the Sisters first gig and instantly loved this band and went on to become a goth myself in the 80s/90s. Leeds... What a great city that I miss tremendously ❤️
I was at Leeds Uni 78-81 and spent more time watching bands and in various bars than I care to remember. S O M were a terrific band amongst many great acts that appeared then.
Sisters of Mercy are masters of repetition. Each song goes in circles, putting the listener into a trance-like state, with each circle adding a new layer as the song progresses. Their slow paced stuff are also great, with Never Land being a prime example.
Justin, I'm psyched you're covering The Sisters of Mercy in this video. I absolutely love the goth scene of the 80s. The Cure, Siouxsie and the banshees, Bauhaus. Fantastic music!
Lyrically, Eldritch was in a class of his own in the late 80's - a real poet. And whilst there's so so many great songs to choose from, I have to think "Some Kind of Stranger" was the best wordsmithing he ever did.
Lyrically every song was a masterpiece, Eldritch was all killer, no filler. His ego wouldn't have allowed him to release anything he felt did not meet his ridiculously high standards. Everything he did he saw as a reflection of himself and omg, did he love himself. My favourites are songs like Lights and 9 while 9, so much humour in them as well as been unbelievably cool.
I love Sisters of Mercy and I became a huge fan of Wayne Hussey's band The Mission. Such a great time for Rock and Roll back in the 80's and 90's! Thanks for reminding me how much I dug this music Justin!!
Was very much into Sisters of Mercy back in the day, still am if I am honest. There are only a few bands that can transport you back and this is one of them, along with Bauhaus and Siouxsie
@@GroinFaceGroin one of the best albums ever in the genre, so many layers and the way each song journey's into the next makes the whole album epic in all proportions
I have been obsessed by this band since I walked into a record shop decades ago and they were playing over the sound system. Absolutely love Sisters of Mercy!!
Do a search for The March Violets who borrowed the SoM drum machine for Crow Baby and Snake Dance. Leeds was a pretty cool city in those early 80s days and I would also recommend The Rose of Avalanche with LA Rain and SoM rare early recording of Anaconda. Happy new year.
Sisters Of Mercy are incredible . Their soundscape is like a dark, rising wave of ultimate joy. They hammer bleakness into your head until you love it . Cheers Justin x
I saw Sisters of Mercy live in 1991 or so. They had so much stage smoke I never could actually tell if they had a live drummer or just a drum machine😂 Also I showed up in a t-shirt and jeans as I really had no idea what they were about at the time, I got a whole bunch of weird looks from what I assume was a gathering of vampires.😅
Andrew looks completely fried these days...people think its dry ice...its a form of engine coolant glycol i think with other chemical coctails..says.not to be used in confined spaces on the bottle usually...or in Sisters case the drum... One of my fav bands not to be listened to for eco sense however..
If it helps, I went full soul boy (blue flares, white Stan Smiths, pale blue Kangol cap) to a Sisters gig in Leeds around 2004. I did wear a Sisters t-shirt as a concession. Rock on, friend. 😂

@Raymond Weiss I thought it was a shame too that he was stricken by the cruel gift from nature that is male baldity. Seeing him with a shiny white slaphead really ruined the dream....what a draaaaag it is getting old
Had a relapse into SoM at the start of the pandemic. And as a bassist this bassline as simple as it is is hypnotic. Love it. Reminds me the work of Petter Hook on the intro of Shadowplay or Blue Monday.
I was first introduced to them at Uni in 86 along with the Mission, March Violets and Ghost Dance. I still listen to them regularly now that I'm 55. Their early 12inch singles are incredible. Especially Alice and Body and soul. Goes down very well with a joss stick burning and downing a few pints of snakebite.
It's high time you covered Sisters of Mercy. I first heard them in "The World's End" (the final installment of the Cornetto Trilogy) and I've been obsessed ever since. I'm impressed you covered such a cool ass band!!! Love it!!!!
Great band. Love the tracks More, Walk Away and Dominion among others. Fields of the Nephilim is another great Goth band, gunslinger Goth in look. I highly recommend their tracks Moonchild and Psychonaut. Having studied at the Uni in Newcastle upon Tyne during my junior year abroad in the mid to late 80s, the Goth scene was just starting to get going. I definitely returned to the US having adopted the look.
It is strange how some music is just so addictive - some how it just works for the listener. It connects with something inside of you. SoM does that for me. As do the Fields of the Nephilim and Bauhaus - all different but all can be labelled Goth.
Loved this song! Was lucky enough to live in an area that had many bars that played the fantastic alternative music you could dance to like SoM, Depeche Mode, The Cure etc… It seems there was more variety in nightlife then in the 80’s and 90’s. Great times!
The 80's and MTV were my introduction to great varieties of music. You could see Van Halen to Devo to Sisters of Mercy. Thanks for bringing back this track from SOM. In case you care, your current hair style is my #1 choice. Cheers! 👍
I love them. Each single and album is a different experience with this band. 'When you don't see me' is a song I can almost hear you guys doing a cover, maybe changing the key up. 'You could be the one' too, fun stuff. 'Nine while Nine' in your voice would sound great in any size stage. Thanks for bringing them to the attention of new generations. Their sound was groundbreaking. It revolutionized alternative music.
Eldritch is something of a computer whiz, he programmed all the sequences and did quite a bit of the production. The brutal drum sound is a Yamaha RX5 sampled by a AKAI S900 and then put through a Yamaha SPX90 reverb preset and then Drawmer gate set to taste. Not sure if the SPX90 preset is room, hall, or plate, but all three have a nice metallic thud to them. I'd say there was probably a compressor at the end of the chain too, but it's hard to be sure. The RX5 drum machine was great because you could easily adjust the pitch of each sample, so here you can tell they've set it up so the drums sound kind of flat and loose. It's that classic combination of a super dry drum sample, tuned down a touch and then slathered in super metallic lofi reverb. That and lots of comb filtering on the other instruments is the sound. When I say comb filtering, I mean time based effects of any kind that are set in such a way as to cancel out frequencies and give everything a very metallic "recording in a drain pipe" kind of sound. It might chorus, flanger, delay, or reverb, but it's set to sound metallic and comb out frequencies. If you want your music to sound gothic, learn about comb filtering, from the short delay on the drum in Nightclubbing to the Carlsboro flanger on Flat Field, comb filtering is THE sound. Of course, you could always just record everything through a drain pipe.
Floodland is a top 10 album of all time for me and I'm basically a hard rock/metal guy. Saw them a couple of months ago at The Forum here in Melbourne (you're stomping ground!) and they were superb.
What you fail to mention is that Patricia Morrison is the most beautiful looking woman in Goth. Fantastic song- timeless. I think the Floodland album is the perfect release by The Sisters of Mercy, whilst First and Last and Always is seen as 'true' by many, this has no filler whatsoever. And of course Jim Steinman's brilliant production. Glad someone else remembers 'Hollywoods' what a great night out that was.
What you fail to mention is that Patrician Morrison didn't play the bass on Floodand. She was a prop. And that Andrew Eldritch always seriously resented being referred to as goth [they weren't] and didn't want anything to do with it. Their concerts would start off with The Stooges Funhouse and a roadie turning on the dry ice until it filled the venue. I got to see them live, so I know. Vision Thing. I love them so much and The Mission.
@@nkmcfrln But they had a huge gothic audience right? Many kids i knew back in the 90s loved S.O.M And they were goths. They may not of liked the term, but they sure looked and sounded goth, especially their live sets, lots of smoke, greens, blue lighting. And ofcours vocals sure sounded goth. But then Rush had a goth following just after 2112 came out because of the album cover. Lots of bands Don't like being pigeon holed, S.O.M was just one.
If they didn't want to be considered goth then they shouldn't style themselves to look goth. If you dye your hair black and wear black people will make assumptions.
One of the most underrated UK bands. Eldridge has done some exemplary covers from Dolly Parton (Jolene) to the Rolling Stones (Gimme Shelter) as well as penning classic tracks of his own, Some Kind of Stranger is a stand out for me. Just an excellent all round band.
I finally got to see The Fields of the nephilim at 02 last week, a band i think you'll like. Check them out, been around since the 90s and still amazing, these two bands very much collide with each others style, it's Goth, they may not like that term, but it's goth lol. Edit: indeed you don't need anything under a good leather jacket, hence i don't wear Ts if it's warm, just my leather.
watching you makes me so calm and relaxed. ive just had something happen and it made me so triggered but then i watch your videos and they make me so much better. thankyou. ❤
The VISION THING album occupied a good couple of years in my life, SOMETHING FAST remains one of the most haunting songs I know of and the title tune bangs like a good 'un. Saw them live and they did not disappoint, just loud on every level. Like Andrew WK with angst instead of partying.
After knocking back a few, Andrew Eldritch arrived back at his apartment, and upon going to the bathroom was momentarily startled by an apparition in the toilet bowl. On second glance he realised - Loo creature, my reflection...
"An apparition in the toilet bowl" wooh, bit charles dickens, "momentarily startled"....perhaps it's a ghost? Or doppelganger uh oh. Or yin + yan? Luckily for andrew himself he managed to not only recover swiftly but refrained from cheapening or diluting this philosophical/ existential experience by "writing" a "song"# about it. # dull but slightly catchy?
I literally just plucked this out of my record collection and was playing it earlier today!!! I opened You tube and your video popped into my feed! it’s like the Gods want Sisters of mercy to be played today! Check out Patricia Morrisons other amazing band -the Gun Club, one of my favorite bands ❤
I LOVE this album too and you made me laugh with you reminiscing about your youth and going to the club! I remember when I first heard it, I was completely engulfed and mesmerised by it! My husband told me of the story upon hearing its release on the radio, he hand his band mate were totally bowled over by it! Thank you for this! You’re awesome!! 😂👌🏻💕
Justin, you should react to Vile Vallo's new solo work. Yes, the singer from HIM is releasing a solo album. He actually named Sisters of Mercy as one of the inspirations for the album.
verdean613, that would be fantastic! I love Ville and I saw HIM on their farewell tour (so suffice to say, I love HIM as well). Maybe Justin can figure out the significance of the sheep in the vid for Loveletting.
I've come to a conclusion about you Mr Hawkins everything you review on your channel, 2 minutes in and you've learned the riff the bassline, solo and all the words! Your like guitar George! You know all the fucking cords lol, in fact you could play in any band and nail it! Your music theory and knowledge is second to none! 👍👍👍
Whilst i absolutely agree that Mr. Hawkins is awesome, any guitar player with half an ear can figure out the chords to Lucretia! When i turn 55 in Feb. , i will have been 'playing' guitar 4 years, it took me not a minute to be able to play that riff....🎸🤘🎸
Right there with you. became OBSESSED with Sisters during the pandemic. I just got to see them live in Seattle. Fantastic! Such a great show. Eldritch is brilliant.
I love that so many of the comments here are "I remember" type ones and that there are so many people that are just discovering SoM for the first time. And I'm here for it all! I've seen them live a few times and it's sometimes a bit of a lucky dip as to how good a show it'll be, but like anyone, I suppose Andrew Eldritch also has off days. At the last gig of theirs I went to there was so much dry ice that you couldn't even make anything out on the stage, which sort of felt a bit strange, if I'm honest, but it was a good night nonetheless.
At the time this song came out, I was friends with a colleague who played bass in an indie band. It took me a while to realise why he was into this song as he wasn't really into the Sisters of Mercy and I didn't really notice the bass line on it's occasional radio plays.
Ah thanks Justin! That reminder that i needed! I should listen to Sisters of Mercy again. Always pumped when i hear the beat and the opening riff of "First and Last and Always" from the Wake VHS.
Yes Justin, thanks for this public service announcement and using your platform to shine a light on this underrated classic. The Sisters Of Mercy are soooo underrated and Floodland is defo one of the best albums from the last 30 years. The legendary Jim Steinman's production on this elevates the drama, pomp, and windswept epicness of this album.....Can you do Temple of Love '92 Ofra Haza remix and Vision Thing next please?
Oh my, this was a trip down memory lane. Loved that band back then and still think they are great. I believe we all just didn’t grasp how great they really were at the time. It’s so refreshing hearing you talk about them. My friends and I sometimes joke about the time when we were young and would go out to that one club where there was this DJ who covered a wide spectrum of music genres to cater everyone’s taste…thus, “goth gang set” would be kicked off with the Sisters of Mercy, right after the “grunge guys” would leave the dance floor…hilarious…And right after the “goth gang” was done everyone else would storm the dance floor once Range against the Machine started “killing in the name of”…meanwhile the hippies would go out to smoke some herbs…ha ha, good old times LOL😂😂 I have fond memories connected to this band…so thank you!!
Thank you for this Justin 😎 I never get bored of The Sisters of Mercy. So many beautiful, dark, poetic tracks ... and that sexy bass line on Lucretia! Magnificent 🖤
I'm a late comer to the channel, and extremely happily surprised to see the love this is getting. Such an amazing song, and that bassline goes on for days, gives me goose bumps every single time I hear it - for the 12th time in a row!. As much as I'm personally a bit of a goff though, I totally understand why he rejects the label so much. I don't think it does justice to them at all, they are so much more! Fun fact - Patricia is married to Dave Vanian of The Damned, and I think that explains a LOT 😃
I adore the Sisters of Mercy. First and Last and Always is one of my favourite albums. I used to follow the Mission around on tour back in the late 80s after they went their separate ways from Andrew Eldritch. It was a lot of fun, interesting times for sure. I do like this track and album too, I played it a couple of weeks ago. For me the earlier stuff is better but this is great as well. Top track!
Awesome session, my old army mates and I go and see them every coupe of years at The Roundhouse, still love them live, no fills just AE singing for nearly 2 hrs. Love the channel, stay classy 🤘🏻
Loved the Sisters for years. Floodland was the first cd I ever owned. Saw them play live in Faro in the summer. Current lead guitarist Ben Christo is superb...does his own stuff too.
Sisters seem such a perfect fit for you. Very intelligent and self-conscious frontman too, not unlike yourself, if you were more disillusioned, reclusive and not-quite-giving-any-f..ks. Hopefully, we'll see some of the lesser known but no less interesting 80s bands here, like Talk Talk or even, dare I say, The Chameleons. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Justin, and thanks for your work, it makes the world a better place!

Saw them live two months ago and Lucretia had the entire crowd bouncing. Great show.
Loved this song! Was lucky enough to live in an area that had many bars that played the fantastic alternative music you could dance to like SoM, Depeche Mode, The Cure etc… It seems there was more variety in nightlife then in the 80’s and 90’s. Great times!
Yessssss I love sisters of Mercy. They have so many incredible songs. Especially when Patricia Morrison was with them🖤
Have been a fan of SOM for many years. The song Alice is still an all time fave:)
The 80's and MTV were my introduction to great varieties of music. You could see Van Halen to Devo to Sisters of Mercy. Thanks for bringing back this track from SOM. In case you care, your current hair style is my #1 choice. Cheers! 👍
Hard not to love the sisters. Epic band. Underrated much like The Darkness.
Mustache plus current hairdo is the winning combo imho. Darkness should release goth album, because why not?!
They wouldn't need to change their name either :)
"When You Don't See Me" is such a great song, musically and lyrically.
Justin nails the beauty of the bass line in this song. It's caveman rock at its finest.
Floodland is a top 10 album of all time for me and I'm basically a hard rock/metal guy. Saw them a couple of months ago at The Forum here in Melbourne (you're stomping ground!) and they were superb.
I totally agree with you. Sisters of Mercy is unique in the same way as the Type o Negative or Prodigy are. There is no like them in world of music

But they had a huge gothic audience right? Many kids i knew back in the 90s loved S.O.M And they were goths. They may not of liked the term, but they sure looked and sounded goth, especially their live sets, lots of smoke, greens, blue lighting. And ofcours vocals sure sounded goth. But then Rush had a goth following just after 2112 came out because of the album cover. Lots of bands Don't like being pigeon holed, S.O.M was just one.
@@nkmcfrln She took legal action against Andrew to prove she did actually write and play some of the music while in the band. And won damages.
@@nkmcfrln meh .. they were goth ... whatever. 😂
Are they still touring? I saw them live in the late 80’s.
@@justinfuller7540
Yep still going strong.
@@71771PAULTHEWALLOFSOUND And still just as good! Epic shows recently!
He denied the Goth term so much, so his genre name became "Not-Goth".
@@justinfuller7540 They've become their own cover band… (And I've been a fan for about 15 years !)
watching you makes me so calm and relaxed. ive just had something happen and it made me so triggered but then i watch your videos and they make me so much better. thankyou. ❤
'Vision Thing' is my absolute favorite! Love Sisters of Mercy
I applaud the effort you've put into this .
Sometimes shit jokes are absolutely brilliant. 🤎💩
I laughed- twice.
Nice
As a longtime Sisters of Mercy fan, I was thoroughly entertained by this. Your assessment of the song and of Andrew's untouchable coolness is spot on.
It’s just such a shame where they’ve been for the last 20 plus years. Yes I’ve seen them ‘now’ but I do wonder how much great studio albums we missed.
As a goth-kid, watching your review and commentary was a delight
@@gearViewmirror I'm not just talking about this video👍
Right there with you. became OBSESSED with Sisters during the pandemic. I just got to see them live in Seattle. Fantastic! Such a great show. Eldritch is brilliant.
Been in love with this album for decades now. Never gets old 🤟❤🖤🤟
I love that so many of the comments here are "I remember" type ones and that there are so many people that are just discovering SoM for the first time.
Great band. One if my favs of the era. Still holds up.
Fun to see a fellow fan getting into it. Wish I could have been at that club night. This past year has been a lot of SOM for me too. 👍
Being in a club in the early 90’s, the dance floor would fill up when we heard the first few notes of “More”
At the time this song came out, I was friends with a colleague who played bass in an indie band. It took me a while to realise why he was into this song as he wasn't really into the Sisters of Mercy and I didn't really notice the bass line on it's occasional radio plays.
In the 80's my friend was into Both and I went to see all the major bands, aside from Bauhaus, like SoM, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission etc.
All absolutely fantastic bands, great taste!
The Sisters are awesome. First and Last and Always is my favorite album of theirs
me too. the guy I dated high school.. our song was "some kind of stranger"
Brilliant to see you appreciating this
classic goth rock track.
Sisters are my fav band. Dominion is a classic. thanks for sharing this
Ah thanks Justin! That reminder that i needed! I should listen to Sisters of Mercy again. Always pumped when i hear the beat and the opening riff of "First and Last and Always" from the Wake VHS.
Been listening to them steadily since about '86. Groovy & infectious.
Yes Justin, thanks for this public service announcement and using your platform to shine a light on this underrated classic. The Sisters Of Mercy are soooo underrated and Floodland is defo one of the best albums from the last 30 years. The legendary Jim Steinman's production on this elevates the drama, pomp, and windswept epicness of this album.....Can you do Temple of Love '92 Ofra Haza remix and Vision Thing next please?
steinman only did one song on the thing: this corrosion
One of the sexiest bass lines ever.
I wore out this album in High School. I too was a goth night attendee. 🌙
Top track!
Love the Mission also
Awesome session, my old army mates and I go and see them every coupe of years at The Roundhouse, still love them live, no fills just AE singing for nearly 2 hrs. Love the channel, stay classy 🤘🏻
Loved the Sisters for years. Floodland was the first cd I ever owned. Saw them play live in Faro in the summer. Current lead guitarist Ben Christo is superb...does his own stuff too.
Sisters of Mercy 🖤 im literally obsessed with Lucretia my Reflection. Pure goth gold
I've loved this band since I've been 13 years old. I'm 34 now and still listen to them atleast once a week.
I never thought I'd see the day you'll react to The Sisters of Mercy. That's a good band.
You’ve gotta love the sisters of mercy in what ever shape or form they come in 👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
Been a huge fan of them for several years now. Seems like there is a huge resurgence of fans popping up everywhere lately.
I love sisters, so happy to see you talk about them ❤Try fields of the nephilim too! Thank you for the vid :)
I've always loved SoM but I'm here to tell you -- Warrell Dane's cover of Lucretia, my Reflection is a thing of epic beauty. 😍🤩
