fun fact for you guys who dont play an instrument: playing behind your back "the hendrix way" (behind your head) which is the way most people do it is actually not any harder than doing it normaly its just slightly less comfortable.
It's a highly erratic style, that's hard to digest for 'proper' guitarists. In a way (technically) it's horrible, in another it's indeed brilliant, I play for a long time and I'm not really sure what exactly he does to sound like this.
Amyl and the Sniffers are incredible - discovered them via listening to The Chats (another Australian mullet-punk band). Their new double LP made during covid lockdown is really quite good.
Hey Justin, for your own interest google Sharpies Australia. Sharpies were an Australian thing around the same time as the UK punk but very different, had their variation on mullet haircuts, tight high wasted jeans and tight t shirts tucked in, very odd but cool dancing. They loved their loud music, the king was Lobby Loyde, as an AC/DC fan you're probably familiar with him. Actually if you watch a lot of early AC/DC footage there are little clumps of Sharpies in the crowd doing their stompy dancing, Rose Tattoo, Billy Thorpe, all that great Aussie rock. Amyl And The Sniffers have a fair bit of Sharpie about em, but without the violence
Good day to you Justin, I hope the tour is going well for you, just wanted to pop on here to let you know that I am loving your content on here, so please keep it coming, always look forward to your regular uploads 🤗
just saw them twice in San Francisco. do not miss this band if they come to your town. "you know you're watching a star" is a huge understatement. Amy Taylor has unreal front woman energy, plus is a legit stage diver 100% from go to thank you good night. non stop full go energy. the whole band was spot on both nights as was their opener C.O.F.F.I.N from Sydney
you should also check out fellow australian band Tropical Fuck Storm (who did a cover of ‘This Perfect Day - The Saints’ with Amy Taylor from Amyl & The Sniffers)
I think their best lyric is “Security will you let me in your pub, I’m not looking for trouble, I’m looking for love.” Made me laugh out loud. Chrissy Amphlett left a huge hole when she passed, there really hasn’t been another female artist even close to her since, but there are elements of this band that reminds me of 80s Divinyls. It takes a lot of guts to have a stage persona like this, there’s a lot of people that don’t like it. Chrissy was criticized for being a rough scrubber. She was brilliant though. I hope this band can keep it together like you said.
That's so well said - please read Chrissy's Autobiography - I can't believe she's gone either. What a warrior and what a woman carrying a band of timid blokes including you know who. I came back to Australia in the 80's. One afternoon everyone in the share house were getting prepared for a concert at Roma St Parklands in Brisbane. During our 'preparation' a couple of the guys started getting wound up. What's wrong I asked. Were going to give that Chrissy Amphlett shit they said. I had no idea what they were talking about. End result - Chrissy Amphlett 5. Dickhead blokes 0 lol. I've been a fan ever since. Please read her book. Peace
@@grimmertwin2148if you wanted to be a woman fronting a pub rock band back then you had your work cut out for you. Even David McComb from The Triffids talked about guys waiting in the car park after gigs to beat them up. The irony is when all the pubs in Perth were taken over by foreign investors and they got rid of all their band rooms to get rid of all the riff raff, the music scene there disintegrated into pieces. It took a while for it to recover over a 10 year period. I’m so glad a band like Amyl have something that’s reminiscent that insane energy of those days. I’m lucky I got to see it. To hell with the hecklers anyway…..they show up to be involved in the show in some way. The 1st time I heard amyl and the sniffers they blew me away . Being an old punk rocker it reminded me when I first saw the Damned in late 76 . So raw and exciting and explosive. Viva la rock
I saw amyyl and the sniffers live at a friends birthday party a few years ago, I'd never heard of them back then but they were impressive to say the least, glad to see an ozzy band getting the recognition they deserve.
These are my favourite band right now. Love their chaotic energy, love the lead singer's hot mess craziness and I love that solo! If you substituted it for a Satriani or Santana solo it would destroy the energy of the track. Also, it's not the worst solo ever recorded, that honour belongs to Ritchie Blackmore! Another exciting act to check out (with similar vibes) are Wet Leg.
Australia has some great rock n roll!! The Onyas, Cosmic Psychos, The Chats and Amyl is awesome!! Very cool to see you digging punk!!! When you gonna write a punk rock tune? I know it's in your blood! Right on man!
I ran across them 2 yrs ago and it was a song that I liked so much and I couldn’t find them. I’ve been recently trying to remember her name and this video pops up. Divine timing.
The opening band on your current tour, The Dead Deads, put on a great show! Didnt get that impression from anything I heard from their recordings, but live they sounded like a rockin band of talented individuals. Would see them again. 🤙
Love all your videos Justin. But I especially love this one! I saw you say that you were reviewing 2/3 bands between Amyl, Turnstile and Moon Walker... I wonder who the other will be
Also, as a guitar player who loves Jeff Loomis and Marty Friedman, I like this guy’s solos. It fits nicely with their music. Not everyone listened to Queen with reverence, Justin. Some of us just play a bit randomly and with more confidence than you would have us feel, given our lack of fretboard prowess…
Thanks for verification Bro. They are playing Austin Tx this year I think and a few other American Spots. They just write good rock songs, I find "I'm Not A Loser" entertaining.
I don't think you "get" punk rock guitar. To me this guitarist sounds like Brian James on the first Damned album. Our 1977 guitar "heroes" were players like Johnny Thunders, Mick Jones, Derwood Andrews and Steve Jones. Also listen to The Saints.... The original Oz punk band. Massive Darkness fan btw... Seen you about 10 times, most recently in December 2021 at Shepherds Bush Empire.
They were amazing yesterday evening at Victorious Festival in Southsea, I was right at the front, Amy was on fire, people crowd surfing, there was a scrap (a small one) but Amy told them to f off ! I love them so much - seeing them again next Saturday. Love your channel Justin you are also a star - well done for introducing me to some good bands too :)
I think that part where she dances round the warehouse is one of the greatest pieces of human movement ever captured on camera. It's fascinating in what appears to be its total spontaneity. I can watch it over and over.
You should check out Front End Loader, one of Australia’s finest. Unique, energetic, tight, melodic, 2 guitar assault and 2 part vocal harmonies. So many great tracks going back to the 90s. Bring it On.
You described Amyl and the Sniffers perfectly! I can never think of the words to describe them. She is a force like no other! If I were a rockstar, I'd be her! Love her energy!
They're kind of old news, in some ways, but I'd like to see your take on King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and their insane output of new music, and their evolving sound. I think they're averaging about 3 full length albums a year while touring. It defies comprehension.
really you should check out the band White Denim from Austin Texas. Their new album Crystal Bullets/ King Tears is phenomenal. Old school funk rock mixed with classic r and b. Melt yourself down.
Would love to hear your thoughts on a DIY punk band from the UK called Hands Off Gretel! They’re incredibly underrated with an amazing female singer 🖤 Amyl & the Sniffers are one of the best bands out today, along with HOG.
Absolutely loved this review J. I think the power of AATS is that they don't try to overreach - they work with what they have unbelievably well and the push boudaries internally - she the only singer I've heard that sounds even better when out of key and she know it and doesn't care and it ROCKS! "I'm short, I'm shy, I'm fucked up! I'm bloody ugly!" - 'Freaks To The Front'. But their real strength I feel is their live performances. They are so fucking tight live and it makes the crowd loopy with all that excess raucous energy! It feels like such a long time since we've heard a band that hasn't been a result of management and publicists, who have dragged themselves from the local community centres and pub, into a limelight they deserve - and you can justtell they're loving every minute of it. They may have naysayers but as Amy sneers, "If they don't like you as you are, just ignore the cunts!" and "Everybody in this room deserves to have fun!" A-fucken'-men! \m/
Can you please do a reaction video on a band called JINJER, I think you would appreciate this woman's vocal capabilities, and also the band as a whole are amazing. Thankyou.
Yes!!!!!!!! I think it would be cool also since they are a Ukraine band. But politics aside Tatiana has one hell of a growl for a female, and she can actually sing to, and the band live are amazing. Even though they've been around for awhile and near all of the band aren't the original members this line up imo has transformed this band into something amazing. I get a KITTY vibe from them if you've heard KITTY, but a much better version, even though KITTY rocked. I've also noticed JINJER are becoming more well known the last year or so, especially after their live gig in Moscow in 2021. There album Wallflowers and the track Vortex really shows her vocal capabilities. I sure hope he reads you're comment and does a reaction video of them, because they are something special, and all heavy metal fans should hear JINJER
Omg JINJER fan's!!!! Yes yes yes, they are amazing. Best metal band in 2014 i believe. Omg this has to happen, and i have the album wallflowers and every track is just amazing. She's into reggae to and some songs have that vibe. @@spudwifi5042 Not sure about going that far and actually hunting Justin down lol, but i get what you mean. I've always admired Justin's vocals so just as that alone makes me think he would appreciate how she sings. Not sure if he's into that kind of metal though, but she's one of those screamers that you can actually make out what she's saying, and in interviews she says that's most important to her because she's a pretty deep writer.
@@spudwifi5042 wow more Jinjer fans lol, and i have wallflowers to, I've got a few of there albums and they all are good, Macro is my favourite And cloud factory, but they are all good. But i think they truly shine live, she has so much energy and really gets into it. And live you can really appreciate her control between clean vocals and scream, some females singers can do it, but none have compared to her range in sound imo.
The reggea track i think you're referring to is called Judgment and Punishment. And tbh i dont think Justin would get it. I watched them in Melbourne Australia and she is indeed one of the best vocalist in that genre I've heard. Justin seems to like "safe" music, hard-core Djent is not safe. He would hear her and say "but its just noise" I doubt he would appreciate it for what it is. I very much doubt in his record collection you would find any thrash or modern djent. I could be wrong and kinda hope i am. Everyone I've played Jinjer to has been blown away by not only her voice, but the backing group, especially as you mentioned there the only djent group that has incorporated ragge so well in some tracks, and some are very subtle like the track Noah. But no, our English man Justin would not understand why we love this music, it's not just noise, there's real meaning to her lyrics. But i would hope he would give them a listen, because i doubt he has heard anything like jinjer especially when she sings in her native tongue wich you rightly said is Ukrainian. It's funny because most think they are Russian lol.

You missed out when they first appeared, it was amazing watching a band singing about genital warts on kids TV 😂, you're sat at home thinking what the fuck, and then one of the times I saw them live he comes out playing a solo on a stuffed white tiger flying on a track in the arena cieling
This is great, bands from AUS are killing it. I recommend The Chats for your next video!
wolfmother were good bitd
"Identity Theft" is my personal anthem! And I think they did the "look" better!
@@lennon1482 yeah wolfmother were kinda last generation of aussie music though, like up there with Cosmic psychos, Frenzal rhomb, Faker, blue juice & grinspoon

I'm old enough to remember Wendy James and Transvision Vamp, and that's who this band remind me of. Big thank you to Justin Hawkins for getting me into Ghost. You're introduction was critiquing Call Me Little Sunshine, but in my opinion their now released album IMPERA deserves re visiting, even if it is only for the track Respite On The Spitalfields - a track about Jack The Ripper I believe. If my memory serves me right didn't a Mr Justin .D. Hawkins portray Screaming Lord Such in the Joe Meek biopic Telstar? And didn't Mr Hawkins also sing 'Jack The Ripper' whilst in the guise of Screaming Lord Such?
FINALLY! Now can we expect a Moon Walker review?
I second this comment heavily. Not the first time I've seen MW mentioned in justins comments...
Is that a band or are we talking the Michael Jackson movie where he turns into a car and a robot and finishes off with a Beatles cover?
@@hotfroganimations Hahahahaha! It's a band! Much better than the film ;)
@@stevesuttner300 I almost forgot, Joe Pesci is in it 😂😂

Another excellent video thx! Awesome job always by that guy who zooms in on your face after the intro, nails it so consistently, whatever you’re paying him double it! Look forward to your Toronto show! Rock on
Defo a good band, and she does have that rare unintentional star-quality.
this band and HER are giving me some Iggy and the Stooges level vibes. I think she's that unforgettable as a lead vocal/focal point
I thought the solo was brilliant, and he is actually really good. He can play behind his back.
Yeah honestly have no clue what this guy is talking about. Solo is amazing.
fun fact for you guys who dont play an instrument: playing behind your back "the hendrix way" (behind your head) which is the way most people do it is actually not any harder than doing it normaly its just slightly less comfortable.
@@elliefcknkole It's a good punk solo. What he's talking about is that it's not a very refined technical guitar solo
It's a highly erratic style, that's hard to digest for 'proper' guitarists.
In a way (technically) it's horrible, in another it's indeed brilliant, I play for a long time and I'm not really sure what exactly he does to sound like this.
This guy Is a tool
This made my day! Thank you Jus ❤️
I’ll just say…they were damn lucky to grow up with and then form a band with their mate, Amy. She’s magic.
Amyl and the Sniffers are incredible - discovered them via listening to The Chats (another Australian mullet-punk band). Their new double LP made during covid lockdown is really quite good.
Aha…mullet-punk.
Same here
Decent track, definitely high enegy.
Looking forward to the Darkness Toronto show!
Just discover them ?!? Incredible and enjoying catching up 🔥 hope to you see them this year
Hey Justin, for your own interest google Sharpies Australia.
Some of her haircuts definitely had a sharpie influence
Good day to you Justin, I hope the tour is going well for you, just wanted to pop on here to let you know that I am loving your content on here, so please keep it coming, always look forward to your regular uploads 🤗
just saw them twice in San Francisco. do not miss this band if they come to your town. "you know you're watching a star" is a huge understatement. Amy Taylor has unreal front woman energy, plus is a legit stage diver 100% from go to thank you good night. non stop full go energy. the whole band was spot on both nights as was their opener C.O.F.F.I.N from Sydney
Awesome call my friend- COFFIN from my part of Sydney, theyre a perfect fit with the excellent Amyl & the Sniffers
met/ saw the guys from COFFIN twice opening for the Sniffers in SF. really nice guys, great band

you should also check out fellow australian band Tropical Fuck Storm (who did a cover of ‘This Perfect Day - The Saints’ with Amy Taylor from Amyl & The Sniffers)
I get those Chrissy vibes too. Loved her work. Might just listen to Divinyls all day!
@@MattyDee2112 I just put them on too haha.
You paid for a ticket didn’t you? 😂
Thank you for sharing your story, I still haven’t read her Autobiography so thanks for the nudge!
I seen these live recently..amazing live, so much energy
They are so good live seeing them soon in Manchester can’t wait
They were fucking good weren't they
Yes!!!!! I'm so glad you listened to Amyl! Now we just need you to do one of these for Moon Walker 😏
Abysmal in the right way! I love that! Perfectly describes it!
Fucking love Justin Hawkins - it’s so lovely to hear someone that knows what they’re talking about talking about music!
These guys are pretty amazing. I cant say I love ALL of their songs (maybe need a couple more listens), but i'd go to a live gig in a second!
Side note: Amy Taylor teamed up with Viagra Boys to do this great John Prine cover: th-cam.com/video/WLl1qpDL7YA/w-d-xo.html
The 1st time I heard amyl and the sniffers they blew me away . Being an old punk rocker it reminded me when I first saw the Damned in late 76 . So raw and exciting and explosive. Viva la rock
A wonderful video, love a cheeky bit of Amyl and the Sniffers.
I'd like to recommend Viagra Boys would love to hear your take on their music.
Research Chemicals
I saw amyyl and the sniffers live at a friends birthday party a few years ago, I'd never heard of them back then but they were impressive to say the least, glad to see an ozzy band getting the recognition they deserve.
These are my favourite band right now. Love their chaotic energy, love the lead singer's hot mess craziness and I love that solo! If you substituted it for a Satriani or Santana solo it would destroy the energy of the track. Also, it's not the worst solo ever recorded, that honour belongs to Ritchie Blackmore! Another exciting act to check out (with similar vibes) are Wet Leg.
bingo...the solo is perfect for the song...unashamedly rugged
These guys and Otoboke Beaver refreshed my interest in punk.
If you haven't looked into them yet, I'd love to see your take on Otoboke Beaver.
Australia has some great rock n roll!! The Onyas, Cosmic Psychos, The Chats and Amyl is awesome!! Very cool to see you digging punk!!! When you gonna write a punk rock tune? I know it's in your blood! Right on man!
The Phycos, original and the best 👌
I ran across them 2 yrs ago and it was a song that I liked so much and I couldn’t find them. I’ve been recently trying to remember her name and this video pops up. Divine timing.
“A misstep could kill it” is so perfect. That’s exactly how I feel when watching them.
I love your stuff Justin. Can't wait to see the Darkness at Download!!!
The opening band on your current tour, The Dead Deads, put on a great show! Didnt get that impression from anything I heard from their recordings, but live they sounded like a rockin band of talented individuals. Would see them again. 🤙
Wait till Justin find The Chats..
The Chats are the shit! Gotta get me a pub feed…
❤
The chats are terrible
The Cosmic Psychos are better, that’s who they emulated
Love all your videos Justin. But I especially love this one! I saw you say that you were reviewing 2/3 bands between Amyl, Turnstile and Moon Walker... I wonder who the other will be
Also, as a guitar player who loves Jeff Loomis and Marty Friedman, I like this guy’s solos. It fits nicely with their music.
Not everyone listened to Queen with reverence, Justin. Some of us just play a bit randomly and with more confidence than you would have us feel, given our lack of fretboard prowess…
yep - punk rock songs need punk solos, not stadium rock lycra wanks
Absolutely.. the solo is also Stooges-like, who cares if technically is not intricate when you get that power.. I love it!
If you're gonna do a session on reviewing Australia's finest you wanna check The Chats and DZ Deathrays after this for sure
Excellent critique. Been following them. Growing nicely. You nailed your observations.✌️
She's brilliant and it's a great song. 🖤
I like your shirt - that mellow orange is a good color on you.
@I talk to the living me? Creepy? Quite possibly, thanks. 🙂
Bring it On.
yes they are one of the best live bands australia has ever had
You described Amyl and the Sniffers perfectly! I can never think of the words to describe them. She is a force like no other! If I were a rockstar, I'd be her! Love her energy!
They're kind of old news, in some ways, but I'd like to see your take on King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and their insane output of new music, and their evolving sound. I think they're averaging about 3 full length albums a year while touring. It defies comprehension.
I don't feel they're old news...they're ascending
Amyl and the sniffers are a brilliant pub punk rock band - well worth getting their albums ...
She did a bit on a Sleaford Mods track "Nudge It" clearly she has taste and talent.✌️
If Sleaford Mods has you on a track., you know you’ve got some cred

And was there not another band called amil and the sniffers back in the bygone 1980s??

That song is in your face, from the second it starts. I can dig it!
That main riff is almost "Working for MCA" by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Thank you .. that was my first thought as well.
@@turkeeg7644 Nice to know...that I'm not the only one!
If Justin doesnt review them i will hunt him down lol jk jk, but seriously if you're into real heavy metal and haven't heard this band you are in for a treat! And she's pretty cute to lol.
@@spudwifi5042
Not sure about going that far and actually hunting Justin down lol, but i get what you mean. I've always admired Justin's vocals so just as that alone makes me think he would appreciate how she sings. Not sure if he's into that kind of metal though, but she's one of those screamers that you can actually make out what she's saying, and in interviews she says that's most important to her because she's a pretty deep writer.
@@spudwifi5042
wow more Jinjer fans lol, and i have wallflowers to, I've got a few of there albums and they all are good, Macro is my favourite And cloud factory, but they are all good.
It's funny because most think they are Russian lol.
spot on.. as someone that just loves anyone going apeshit with honesty whether they "have a technician's grasp on what they are doing" or are "just doing what sounds good to them at the limits of their experience" . it is absolutely "fragile energy" love that phrase and your take. Great vid!
Their musical pedigree is more in the line w/ Sex Pistols than anything else, love ‘em
Thanks Justin another great video , as usual . Much respect mate 🙏
This track made it onto an episode of Letterkenny. Not only does this show how good this band is, but it also shows how much Canadians love our rock & roll, metal, & punk music. Noice one, mate!
THATS where i heard em... Couldn't remember.

Their new album is fantastic start to finish. She’s fearless.
Old school metal guy here. With all the new weak punk and metal coming out these days, Amyl and the Sniffers are awesome. They feel honest and... they're good. Great guitar sound.
She's like the pain-raging love child of Chrissy Amphlett (pre-"Touch Myself") and Gwen Stefani (first No Doubt album).
Great description 👍
definitely channelling Chrissy vibe which is not a bad thing
