this is one of my biggest insecurities, and im 31 years old. there are many things ive never grown up doing, but eventually had to do something about, such as simply mowing a lawn, getting fuel for it in a container. i have pretty much no knowledge of automobile maintenance, such as changing a wheel when flat or jumpstarting, because i have never been in such situations requiring it. wish I could learn tho
You’re right, but still from a Zoomer perspective I kinda understand why youngsters are so reluctant to learn stuff. You see, the world is constantly changing. The world of possibilities is incredibly large and the pace of changes is insane.
We’re constantly forced to learn everything. Yes, older generations were also forced to learn everything, but the world was a lot more comprehensible. It’s so fcked up, how the older generations project all of their dreams (or rather disappointments) on us. We hear this all the time “I didn’t have this option, when I was your age, therefore you have to do it” and then “I already knew this, when I was your age, therefore you have to know it”, “We’ve never had your possibilities, therefore you have to…”.
If you had our possibilities, you’d get crazy. Everyday, we wake up to completely different world and have to somehow deal with it. Boomers don’t have to, because they’re “too old to learn the new stuff”.
I remember when my dad used to come and tell me to come help him whenever something broke in the house. Even if I didn't want to help, he would tell me to at least watch. I was a chubby kid who only played computer games, so I did it begrudgingly. Now as an adult, at 28 and living alone, I am grateful to my dad for teaching me so much. Thank you, dad. I really appreciate it.

Same here man. But i've never learned anything. And now i regret it. Hopefully at 30 now, i've bought a house, and my dad is happy to renovate from it A to Z with me. I'm finally learning everything i was supposed to learn.
Lol my dad was drunk often and didn't live with us in the house. As a result, I had to learn things for myself, but not really any useful skills until recently. School is the same, no real-life skills taught there either.
My stepfather is a builder. He also knows a lot about electricity and can fix casual problems you will have with cars. He never teached me anything, neither did my mom. And I am talking about life skills and values. It is sad. I had a terrible school life because of that, things that changed my personality to this day. Now, it not only affected my school life, but also started affecting my adult life since I'm 18 now. They are also raising my little brother to be the same way. He is fat, lazy and doesn't like studying, fortunately he recently started playing football/soccer at school. However, the only thing that changed is the fact that he is now actively engaging in sports, but his parents still do an horrific job at parenting him. I do have some sort of hate towards because of that, and I do admit that one of my goals is to earn money to be able to get away from them.

@@armoredlumberjack1999 I had things easy, but my dad still taught me how to use a multimeter, how to look for quality appliances and lightbulbs, how to fix my faucets and bought me all the tools. He even taught me how to grow potatoes, and make wooden spoons, all while being what I'd say was an upper-middle class lifestyle. I suppose that goes two ways, because that meant he had enough time to teach me stuff and resources to buy me things, and he could afford to take the chance on learning something, even if that meant some small amounts of damage while learning. A lot of people I know were either too busy working and not able to risk something going wrong and taking the time to teach someone, or just couldn't be bothered and would hire someone. He even had me help with tire changes when I was a kid. Everyone should have those experiences, even just to watch someone work and see how things are done, from testing to see if a battery died, to fixing a toilet.
There used to be a sterotype that men knew how to do those and women didn't, but I think it's pretty much equalled out now.

Because you've made it over that hill, you'll then have new challenges you wouldn't have even considered, and they'll be hard. So it goes, and eventually you'll get to a point where if you look back that so many things will be terribly easy, and you'll be a well rounded and competent fellow, and you'll still have new things to learn. Whatever the case, don't call yourself pathetic, you'll be surprised at how many competent men were useless till they got married and had to start fixing things. It's better to approach all this with good humour and unearned confidence, even if you have no idea what you're doing yet. Because soon you will.

My father died when i was 5 , at home my older brother has already move on with his gf in another city.

My dad can fix anything and also studied car mechanics in highschool and yet I don't know shit. While boomers are handy they are were also pretty shit parents compared to modern standards and didn't care to teach me anything, at least That's how I feel it was in eastern Europe. This video has hit me, my father was an idiot, I have never gotten along and it has tortured me psychologically as a child. Deep down I didn't want to learn anything from him, because while I was in his presence he had the ability to say bad things to me indirectly, there was no way to express how bad it made me feel to anyone, I couldn't find a way to express myself. It is this very video that has woken me up to the realization that refusing to learn was of no use to me. I'm brushing my teeth in the kitchen because the bathroom sink hasn't worked for 6 months. I have several things to repair in my apartment, so I think it's a good time to start learning.

I am so thankful for my dad. He inspired me to take an apprenticeship as a mechenic. He tought me how to build/ repair Pc, how to handle finance and so much more. And today I am able to help him around the house. Having a traditonal father figure in todays time is very valuable and thank the lord for him. Keep it up guys and keep trying to better yourself everyday. Everyday we are able to learn life lessons if we keep looking. I hope I can find a good woman in my live to pass down knowledge and wisdom to the next generation.

Man I've been putting this one off for so long, I feel this but not for the same reason. I've tried to learn but no matter what I do I just don't seem to be able to do anything near the same proficiency as my father. And looking back everyday he showed new skill I couldn't even begin to wrap my head around even now
It's a matter of practice, men used to fill their free time with "tinkering" which was basically practicing various tasks like disassembling and rebuilding stuff or trying to make something work better with DIY improvements. I tried to learn as much as I could from my dad, but it took many years of practicing on my own until I could have a fraction of his proficiency - which is normal, our parents did have a 20, 30 or even 40 year head start on us with these things.

This is one of my favorites you’ve made. The dad was the best character in this. He showed up, saw the problems goin on, fixed them from scratch, and gave pearls of wisdom about the state of youth in society today. He even said he wasn’t a mechanic or anything. He was someone who just put his hands to work and solved issues using his own real world experience.
A lot of folks in this time aren’t at their full potential and expect others to solve their problems for them instead of putting in work to fix it themselves. It’s one of many issues goin on and it’s truly sad to see.

There are some skills that will make life considerably easier, though they might be not interested. Like learning english if you're not from english speaking community, as majority of the world's content in english. While a kid is a kid, the parent bears the responsibility of their upbringing, in most cases kids can't plan ahead that good and be that commited. Your kid ain't supposed to like it, but he might thank you for teaching if you succeed.
Growing up poor, my Dad always fixed everything himself. My dad had me help with almost everything, and everything I couldn't help with, I had to hold the flashlight, tools, whatever. I went on every trip to the hardware store, and he would explain what we needed, and how we were going to use it. And if we couldn't fix it right away, we would figure it out or look it up until we got it.
I can fix or build pretty much anything now, but I'll never have to fix my relationship with my Dad.

Ostatnio zauważyłem na tym kanale nawiązanie do Adama i Elżbiety z filmu Dzień Świra. Był nawet napis w windzie - Cracovia.
I find that the daughter telling her boyfriend's father that he didn't teach his son many things, and her telling his boyfriend that she never noticed that all those things were broken, resonates a lot with the father-son relationship. Because the boy still has broken things inside of him that prevents him to be a man, that his father may try to repair in his place, but it is too late. This resonates with the overweight guy saying in the beginning that he is still hurt, despite the gym-goer excuses.
I believe the father just didn't bother to teach his son anything, he preffered to 'do it on his own' rather than see his son struggle and lose patience. A lot of parents don't have patience to teach their children and by helping their children they also like to present themselves as a martyr or samaritan figure.

I really love these videos MillenniaThinker. I know you having it rough and I want you to know it's ok. Take your time and make videos when you can. This video teaches so many lessons like they always do. Don't compare yourself to someone's ex because you don't know what it was like to date them. Your worth is more than just your looks. This channel reaches an audience that really needs to hear these things but are too stubborn to go see a therapist. It feeds it to them in an entertaining and digestible way. Keep it up.

I fixed everything that broke to my ex-girlfriend's house, because her ex had no idea how to use even a hammer, but a drill or a watershed? She cheated on me anyway, that taught me not to care about people outside my family and those who were always fair to me.
When something breaks at my place I remember how my dad could do stuff like; car maintenance (basic) building closets, a treehouse that survived hurricane sandy, fixing small appliances usually, fixing toys when I was a kid etc...all without TH-cam.
Pretty nuts, and it makes me at least want to try and fix it myself even though I'm not nearly as handy I feel like I, and our generation, are pretty good at researching when we want to be, and you really can find a video on anything these days. Feels good to make a stint or fix something, even though admittedly I do get frustrated quickly, the payoff for having a solution that works it kinda nice.
I do understand the guy is wrong for not being willing to learn and for being lazy. But the thing is, she hasn't even communicated with him about the issue. This is ironic because instead of trying to fix the relationship by talking about it and putting in an effort, she is considering getting a new man who can fix things for her. Just like the boomer said, "People now adays just get new things when things aren't working." If she truly loved him, then she wouldn't start to give up so easily. She will at least communicate the issue with him and put in an effort. But just like him, she can't fix her sink. Instead, she'll consider to get a new one.
Wasn't her asking him why he didn't fix it himself? Her communicating with him. She had to tell him multiple times to fix the bathroom sink, while she made dinner for him in the beginning. If somebody isn't picking up their weight and you constantly have to remind them too, it's probably a good idea to rethink the relationship. Of course she could've been more direct.
Personally, if somebody refuses to change the second time you ask them too they'll never change. If you constantly have to nag somebody to do something, of course your bound to give up eventually.

Seems like you completely missed the point of the video. He could've told her in the beginning of the video that he didn't know how to fix anything in his home. He expects her to cook for him, and she expects him to fix things around the house. She immediately starts cooking for him, while he keeps putting off keeping maintenence around his own home. And instead calls his father to resolve the broken things in his home for him. The girl tried to give him the benefit of the doubt when asking his father.
"You never taught him?" But his father replied with "somehow he didn't need to, never had time, or maybe he didn't want to?" The previous caption of the video talked about how men want traditional woman but aren't traditional themselves.
The boyfriend expected his girlfriend to cook. But when his girlfriend expected her boyfriend to fix things around the house. He didn't know how. You can't expect to want a traditional woman if you can't be a traditional man yourself.
And it's funny you say it was insigficant things, when at the end of the video. She brings up the fact that the balustrade on the balcony was loose and that somebody could've FELL from the balcony. And again he shifts the responsibility to the housing association instead of just taking the time to learn these important skills from his father or to buy the tools to fix up his home like his father keeps recommending him to do.
He's not portrayed as the bad guy, he's portrayed as a Liar who has no regard for the place he lives in and constantly shifts responsibility to everybody else to fix things for him instead of taking the time to learn these essential life skills himself or at the very least to ADMIT that he didn't learn instead of constantly promising that he's gonna do something he knows he isn't gonna do.
Like imagining living with a person that just completely refuses to put their part in taking care of their own home and instead of learning how to manage things they wait for others to fix it for them. Some of the skills he could've done weren't Even that hard like changing the light bulb, or calling the housing association to screw in the balcony so nobody falls to their death.
It's okay not to know how to do certain things, but you have to be honest about it. Or at the very least put effort into keeping your home functional.

As far missing the point of the video here’s what I’m confused about how the fuck are we going to consider him or her less traditional for not having certain skill sets?
I would consider both my parents to be traditional, but they don’t adhere to these standards to the fullest. My mom doesn’t need to clean and that’s not a breaking point nor should it be. We pay someone to provide that service. My father can and will try to do maintenance but sometimes it’s easier to just pay someone else.
I really don’t understand what the fuck people are getting at here? I want a stay at home wife as well but if she can’t cook it would never disqualify her. Now if she didn’t want kids let’s say then 100% gtfoh. But she could learn how to cook or order out or whatever the case I don’t get why people are being so dramatic.
You work with what you have and tailor your abilities to your partner’s expectations as much as you can but you need to know the expectations first and I don’t see where they were clear on that shown in the video.

My dad taught me how to fix and tinker things but it took me a while to make him understand I didn't need his help anymore. Yet everytime he comes at my home he finds something he think he needs to fix or tinker.

Maybe you don't know how plumbing works.. then jump on the problem and get a plumber. Car is jerking all around because the timing chain is off or spark plugs can't hold a charge? Put down the cash and take it to a reputable car shop. Etc etc. TLDR: show you care and who you are by solving problems.

In some way, I agree with dad. A year ago I didn't know anything about how a computer built, now I can build a pc for any task. Half a year ago I didn't know anything about plumbering, but when my old water heater broke down, I just googled how to replace it on my own. Same with furniture, windows, etc. Any time I stumble upon an unknown, I just google how to solve it, not call my dad.
And it feels great to be capable of doing something with your own hands.
Even in a single parent home, I've always tried to fix things myself unless it was a big project and couldn't make the time because of work. But all the small stuff that I could fix I do.

My father was quite the handyman. He always treated me like shit, insulted me, called me a good-for-nothing kid, had zero patience when I made a mistake, etc. So, I grew up having zero interest in DIY stuff (and in being with him, in general).
Up to this day, I'm still quite clueless. And living in a 19 m^2 studio doesn't give me too many opportunities to learn and practice. I learned to attach shelves to the wall without using a drill, though. I don't think my landlord would allow me to make holes in the wall.

When you become a home owner you learn a lot of things and it's either sink or swim. Either you fix it or you spend alot of money getting someone else to do it. I'd rather do it myself.
My mom is a handy woman. She knows how to change a tire, knows how to fix the freon, put up drywall, change the wires in the wall (Not sure what she was doing but she managed to fix the broken light on the ceiling), and many more I can't name. My grandma knows a lot about these things also, ever since my grandpa walked out on them and started another family I guess my grandma felt the need to teach my mother this type of stuff so she wouldn't need help all the time. Luckily my mom married my Dad and she sometimes teaches him some stuff too lol. Now that I'm nearing adulthood they plan to teach me all the handy work also.

To be honest I can kinda relate with that guy. It's not that I never was interested in learning these things. I did learn a lot of things from my dad, like how to change a tire, how to unclog the sink and changing lightbulbs, yet there are still so many things I haven't learned yet in life. And I kinda wonder what I would do if I didn't have my dad around. Most likely look online on how to fix these things and learn from scratch.

Over the years I've learned alot from my dad, father inlaw, and grandfathers. Do I know everything? No, but the key thing is always have a desire to learn. Nothing like buying a truck and a house to make you up your learning game. Also google/TH-cam help one in learning. I've done alot of home projects and save money going there to learn if someone I know isn't familiar with something or can't make it over to help.
I try to fix things around our apartment, but she won't let me. She just calls maintenance. She won't let me check her car to make sure all is well. But I'll still routine maintenance on my car that can be done through a tool box. She likes new, I'm comfortable with the old. I like the new couch we bought, but I wish we could keep the loveseat. I bought that for 100 dollars and the old woman didnt even use it. Was still wrapped up. Maybe someone else will find good use for it. It's really nice :(

Don't rush in life unless you know what you're doing and have learned the skills to make it through. My friend, same age as me, already has a wife and a kid, and living in his own place. From a young age he was already working with and learning skills from his father, and they were a very traditional family. My father was gone from us most of the time because he never lived with us, so I had to learn to discipline myself and learn skills. I know my strengths and weaknesses so I'm not rushing through life so quickly.

Well, I'm 25 and still ask father to do something at my house.
Iam supposed to call some specialists, but they are wrose than him at that, he always does his job well.
We had a talk about that, I'm less capable of doing this stuff and he said just see how I'm doing and ask questions if something seems unclear to you.
But I mean it is totally fine to not knowing something because my father had like 2x more time than me to learn things.
When I'll be his age(50) I will also be like that.
It's not a sin to ask for help, it's a problem when you rely on it and can't do it yourself, whilst your dad your still alive learn as much as you can from him someday you'll be someone's dad and they'll look up to you the same way, you don't want to disappoint them

This is a problem I've noticed with myself. All my life, my dad has gotten my older brother to do all the dirty work and I was babied growing up. I thought I had it all good, but now, when it comes to work and being able to problem solve everyday things, I'm worse off compared to my brother. And idk how the hell to fix it, I've gone all my life doing things I've wanted, but I feel like doing stuff you don't want to do is what grows you as a person but I'm to scared/lazy to do that now.

This sure makes me miss my dad who passed while I was in high-school. Wish I had learned more with him. In the end though, its on youself to learn and all the tools are available.
The Dad's advice in the end was to the girl too, just like the guy shouldn't buy new things if the old one breaks down, the girl shouldn't find a new boyfriend instead of fixing her current relationship.
Unfortunately nowadays people just buy new things and don't bother to maintain or service perfectly good products, to the point that companies can get away with making their products irreparable and nobody bats an eye.
What gets me is that the people who claim to be so "environmentally conscious" are the same people who buy a new phone every year, and a new car every 3 years. I see this alot at my school for example; at my school they have these so called "eco ambassadors" who are students who talk about how we should strive to "reduce our carbon footprint", meanwhile these are the same people that get driven around in brand new Porsche's and BMW's, and get a new iPhone every year. Its completely hypocritical and extremely wasteful.

I'm so glad my dad taught me to fix things, I fix everything in our house and I enjoy it. I do feel like I will end up fixing my daughter's things when they move out one day... maybe that's wrong, guess I should teach them.
I wish my father taught me how to fix things. Atleast he taught me values, ethics, morals etc. I tried to gain as much knowledge and wisdom from him before he passed away when I was 12.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not making excuses, life was just a little harder for me growing up, and still is. Day by day at 22 years old I'm learning things new. That's one of the disadvantages about having a father like mine. (To clarify he was 64 years old born 1936) you don't have much time with them when they're elderly.
Overall, I'm still grateful and blessed to have a father because others don't.

I feel like I did something like this. I started going out with my now girlfriend. Met her mom and younger sister. No male or father figure around but the mom is strong and surprisingly handy enough to maintain a house with simple repairs and even has an impressive set of tools. We all get along well, including the sister's bf at the time. Some things around the house need electrical work which were beyond the mom and that's understandable. So now I'm installing all sorts of stuff to the house and just being the man that my dad taught me to be. Only later did I learn that I was mogging the sister's bf. I don't think she is into me nor would I ever do my girl dirty but those two split up and she can't find a guy who meets her standards now. Feels bad man.

First date with Hubby he gets a flat and realizes his Triple A has expired. He has no idea how to change a tire. He's got the tools and even the spare, but no idea how to do it. I don't even drive (seizures) and I had to change the tire in high heels and a dress. I am seriously not making this up.
He is this. He would rather pay someone else to do it than learn, even if it's very simple and easy to figure out or teach ones self.
His father is a off the boat Italian man who is extremely handy and entirely self taught. Father In-law tried to teach hubby as a kid, but hubby never wanted to learn.
It's so bad that something simple like changing a door knob, if left to him, becomes an hour + exercise in anger, frustration and lost parts and ends with a knob less door.
So, what did I do?
I went to his 80 year old father and said "Teach me. I want to learn." And that's what he has been doing. He also has let me borrow his home improvement books, the same ones he taught himself reading.

My father never really showed me much on how to fix stuff even though he is really good at it. I was barely considered to assist him as a kid in any way, unless it has something to do with me (like my bike got a tire) and even then he had no compassion or patience with me. He just rather did it himself. Maybe it is also a little my fault for not showing more interest in it. I can repair some stuff alone now in my home, and after having some debates with him, he is slowly showing me now in my 30s. I love him very much, and you can always count on him, but he has a short tamper when something doesn't work out and screams. Thats why i always distanced myself and rather worked alone.
