    I had an ACL tear a couple decades ago back when I was in the Navy. The weird thing is, it really didn't hurt that much. What it really did was kind of breaks your heart, because you know you've just done some damage to your knee. You can feel the looseness and the wobble in the knee. Kinda terrifying. It took me a solid year to recover. I did not have access to all the money that NFL players have.

    • @Rick-wn5oh
      @Rick-wn5oh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@blade7506 Tell me about it. My doctor told me to wait about getting the surgery. They were just Developing something called arthroscopic surgery of the knee.
      They told me if I could hold off getting the surgery, I could avoid getting the "filet of knee". He told me too exercise my leg a lot so that the muscle would keep it pulled in on its own.
      This way I was able to hold off about 18 months before I got the surgery. That was the surgery that took a year for me to recover. I had the surgery in Portsmouth naval hospital. Now that was a real dump of a hospital.
      Oh yeah, they originally misdiagnosed my injury. They told me my knee was just sprained and gave me a cane. I found out pretty quickly, that it was a lot more than a sprain. Thinking about it now, it actually took me almost three years to recover. You really have to love the military don't you.

    Most people who tear their ACL feel pain and a "pop" in their knee when the injury happens. Their knee usually gets swollen soon after the injury. After the swelling goes down, someone with an ACL tear usually can walk. But the knee may feel unstable and can "give way" and make the person stumble or fall.👍

    These ACL tear videos are so interesting because the movement looks so subtle. Do you have thoughts on the ideal leg plant technique to avoid the tibia moving forward? Is it as simple as avoiding the torque or internal rotation when planting? Or are movements at these speeds something that just pushes the body past it’s natural limit?

    • @MightyWarriorCoalition
      @MightyWarriorCoalition 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I tore both acl and meniscus in high school playing basketball. Sometimes it’s just normal movements. One time it was during a tough drive, hop step finish. The acl and meniscus had torn on the land from the hopstep but I used it to bounce and lay the ball in. The year before, I tore the opposite acl and meniscus while doing a practice drill running a suicide to get back on defense and defend a fast break. I wasn’t running super fast or anything. I think it’s our ligaments get worn down over time from those maneuvers. And one day pop goes the acl. I used to climb and jump off a lot unnecessary things as a kid and flip off of swings. My knee would often hyperextend and rotate inward but I didn’t know it was that bad when I was younger. By the time I started to play bball at a competitive level, my knees were due for destruction and that what happened. One still gives me issues to this day.

    I suggest a video in the future on a second time ACL reconstruction on the same knee. How much lower is the success rate compared to a single surgery?

    I tore my left ACL in a varsity wrestling tournament my sophomore year of HS… 6 years ago, the guy wrapped his leg around mine, that was the first instance something felt not right, then when he took me down that knee hit the mat hard, which is what sealed it, I stood up and my knee completely buckled out from under me inwards

    How do you feel about the turf? Can you tie ligament injuries to the surface? I want to know how these injuries compare on grass surfaces vs turf

    When I saw OBJ basically trip on air and tear his ACL in the biggest game of his career, I was heartbroken. 💔 The problem now is that Robert Woods is expected to return, so Beckham may never see the field in a Rams uniform again. At least Odell finally got his ring. and winning it should solidify his legacy as one of the all-time greats at WR. Congrats champ!! 💍🏆

    Doc, do you think this may have been caused from the turf not allowing enough “give” when he planted? I see a lot of people stating that if that were grass then that would have not happened.

    Hey Doc Brian....
    Love your most educational videos!
    Is Odell predisposed to knee injuries? Are some athletes more likely to have knee injuries or is it just bad luck?

    • @roberthudson1959
      @roberthudson1959 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Women seem particularly susceptible to this injury, but bad luck also seems to play a role. An awful lot of ACL injuries seem to happen on routine, even non-contact, plays.

    I feel it’s just like Rose when he did that jump stop move popular on playgrounds of hoopers. He moved so quick into that move, and before he could jump back up to shoot or lay the ball up it gave. Jabari Parker and Klay Thompson appeared to have a the same problems with their own knees.

    What are your thoughts on Knees Over Toes guy, Ben Patrick? He has some very interesting data on how to protect the knee from injury. Specifically he is big on tibialis training, which is responsible for deceleration and limiting forces generated through the knee.
    In this video you can see the tibialis activate when he tries to decelerate, but it isn't strong enough to prevent the load from traveling up to his knee/thigh.
