    I recently had a similar experience - I tore my ACL in November 2021, but I actually regained mobility pretty quick and had assumed it was just sprained. It got better and I played 5 rugby games in 2022 before having 2 very similar instances to what happened to Odell. I finally had an MRI in 2022 which confirmed my ACL was fully torn. Im currently still waiting for surgery.

      Kinda happened to my uncle when he was younger. He told me a decade ago so I don’t fully remember the story, but I believe he tore it the first time playing football, never got surgery but it stopped bothering him, and then YEARS later it gave out while he was hiking and finally went to a doctor and was told it was completely shredded and there wasn’t anything left of it

      @@bigpapi6688 yep sounds the same. It works fine in a straight line, but every now and then you can step sideways and it just feels slightly off. Thankfully the hamstring and other ligaments are strong enough to keep it together…

    Odell is such a route technician that I fully believe this story. On technique alone he could protect himself from a lot. I think it's partially the middle of the field being slippery, partially the turf, and partially him getting a little excited and playing a little more loosely because he was killing it that game.

    • @mards2479
      @mards2479 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      He was definitely getting loose, that hip sink as he drew the ball in was sloppy by his standards, he had his feet so far in front of himself, and on grass I think his foot might slide rather than his knee

      slippery turf is criminal. this last SB it was like a third team playing against both. if school kids were playing on such a field it would be a problem, but in the NFL that makes billions, it's fine to have poor conditions--makes it more entertaining i guess. smh

    • @tmanning2000
      @tmanning2000 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrJCerqueira The difference is the way it was treated. The SB where he got hurt, it was basically the standard turf that was there, and knowing he already had it torn pregame makes even more sense why that motion made it worse. This past one, it was on a new sheet of grass that the NFL grew just for the game, and they had to paint the entire thing because it wasnt green enough and the paint didnt dry right. Not the first time they did it, if you remember NE vs Seattle, a bunch of the Pats jerseys were covered in green paint from the turf, but the paint was dry to where it didnt effect their traction

    2 years ago I tore my ACL during practice, which was diagnosed with an MRI, but I didn't do any surgery, only kinesitherapy. 6 Months later I could perform in sports like I did before. An knee specialist explained me, that in some cases the ACL can tear, but the synovial membrane tube that lies around the ACL doesn't. In that case it is possible that the ACL can regrow. I am so happy that I didn't opt for surgery.

    • @cpbeslidin3611
      @cpbeslidin3611 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was similar on my first tear but I ended up getting a bad car accident shortly after and never restrengthened my leg muscles properly. And starting playing again and being a very skilled baasketball. Player I knew how to get my shot off still without having to be very physical when finishing. But having all those instincts of playing like Odell your adrenaline will be too high and u will make a mistake and buckle the knee. I now have torn it twice since with no surgery. It’s shot. No acl meniscus gone. Luckily I’m 22 and still have hope. Just going to do a full reconstruction and strengthen my leg muscles the best I can and stay off the court. Because I know myself. I’ll start by shooting around. And not turn down a 2v2 game and shoot lights out and win. And I’ll tell people I’m hurt and everyone’s like your not hurt.

    I lived with a fully torn ACL for about 12 years. For the most part I was able to function perfectly fine with a few exceptions.
    Running was fine, but stopping, cutting was a problem. I had to consciously protect my knee when doing those things. Usually problems occurred when I wasn't expecting it. Things like stepping down from a ladder would easily hyperextend my knee if I wasn't careful. Slipping on ice would often hyperextend it. The hamstring muscles do support the joint, but their reaction time is not as fast as a ligament.
    While I believe that a highly trained athlete would be able to function without an ACL it seems unlikely that he would be able to play receiver. Its more likely that it was partially torn.

    Video suggestion:
    It's a bit of a different sport, but in the Australian Football League, we recently had a player with a long history of concussions suffer one of the most inocuous concussions I've ever seen and I was wondering if you could do a video about how he may have been concussed
    For backstory, his name is Paddy McCartin and he was drafted in 2014 and played for a team between 2015 and 2019. During that time he suffered 8 concussions before retiring due to ongoing complications.
    A couple of years later, he was cleared to play by doctors and in 2021 returned through the VFL (basically like the NBA's G-League) and was then signed to an AFL team. He suffered another concussion in 2022 but was able to return, however this next one which happened a week ago was so innocuous as his head basically grazed the turf. It's started a significant amount of discussion around whether it's worth him trying to return to footy again.
    There’s no vids I can find on TH-cam other than news reports, but this is the video of the incident from the AFL website

    I once walked and played around on a torn Achilles tendon that I sustained from Cross Country/Track and Field for about 2-3 years without really knowing it. The only reason I finally went to see a specialist is because I noticed that I had to constantly be stretching my foot upward because I felt tightness in the back of my heel that ached, and my entire foot would go limp if I scuffed my heel a certain way when walking. So not surprised that Odell was able to play at a high-level still while basically missing an ACL. Granted ligaments are different from tendons, but still, playing on anything thats structurally not secure like is unusual. Here’s hoping Odell is fully healthy playing for the Ravens.

    I tore my left acl in 1981 playing flag football. In those days the surgery was brutal, flaying your whole leg open to make the repair. My ortho recommended I rehab and stop playing football and basketball since my main sport was skiing. I came back and skied more than 100 days that winter and didn't look back for 23 years until the meniscus shredded on a trail run in 2004. Then I had acl reconstruction with patellar tendon autograft, 70% menisectomy, and microfracture. A recent MRI shows that the acl is still intact but I feel that it has always been kind of loose. I had full range of motion a week after the surgery, which isn't normal. So I can't cut at all. That will cause an instability event and it will hurt like hell even though there is an acl in there. But I can run, ski, climb, and live an active life at age 66. I'm strong and I know how to protect myself in those activities. There is no way I could protect myself in football or basketball. Because of my experience I understand how OBJ could have got through a few games as a wide receiver without one. But it was not going to be sustainable and history shows that. My question is if the Rams knew, did they have an agreement with him to let him play and he would not sue them if he injured his leg worse in just this kind of incident? Seems to me a team would have either voided his contract or insisted he get surgery to protect their investment. It doesn't make sense to me.

      that's what I was thinking, if they knew he had torn ACL, why didn't they make him ware a brace? I tore mine back in 1989, never had it fixed (Dr. said because of other injuries I would never be active enough to worry about it), so now, whenever I do any relatively stressful activities, like riding a bike, hiking, or when I go wading in the rivers while fishing, I always ware my brace. Maybe a brace wouldn't allow him to run at lightning speed???

    Makes me think alot, in high school I tore my acl and one doctor said surgery was possibly needed and another said that the tear was partial enough for it to heal well. I remember being on crutches for 6 months til it was stable enough to walk on, but I dont quite remember following up too much with any xrays of it. So I wonder how it really healed

      @@pengu4932 8-10 months to get back to sport yes. After surgery you need crutches for 4-6 weeks. When I tore my acl I didn't use crutches at all. And it also sounds like you had a partial tear, not a ful tear. Who made you walk with crutches for so long?

    Then what, exactly, was the injury sustained in the Super Bowl? The ACL was already fully torn. That caused the instability in the knee. But then what is the type of injury this caused that happened during the SB?

    • @tucegs522
      @tucegs522 ปีที่แล้ว

      the ACL was fully torn, but the hamstring was functionally keeping the femur stably attached to the tibia in a way that gave Odell his full range of normal motion in his legs, it was that sudden cut on the injury play, of him seemingly catching his cleat in the turf, that jerked the femur forward in a way that it was no longer stably on top of the tibia without the assistance of the acl, and therefore that leg would no longer be stable and able to give him his full range of motion until rehab was completed again. at least that’s my understanding of it, it’s about the positioning and stability of the femur relative to the tibia

      Tearing ur ACL then getting surgery involves reconstruction, meaning they take a tendon from another part of ur body (hamstring tendon, patellar tendon, or quadriceps tendon) and use it to make a new ACL in the knee. This new ACL is referred to as an "ACL graft" This is what odell did the first time he tore his ACL so this is likely him tearing his ACL graft, which doc says was already nonfunctional in the MRI which prob means it was partially torn already but this was probably it fully tearing and the tibia shifting forward.
