I like how even the 'bad' entries in the series like 64 and Sen both manage to have pretty good music, Senri Kita's beautiful and instantly recognisable character art, and have gameplay robust enough for them to occasionally be played at high level by the Japanese. Truly the mark of a great series when that is the worst it has to offer!

Going home from school I stoped at a little grocery store to play Samurai Showdown, spin master, king of the monster competitively with kids from school. I would wake up 30 minutes early to stop at the small market right at the corner of my high school 5 years later to play Tekken Tag tournament competitively and almost ritualistic before school began at 8am. 🥳 All the kids surrounded that arcade and I got really excited when my quarter was next in line, only to get my can handed to me by the arcade champ.

    My top 3 is
    - Samsho 4 (I didn't play it too much but what I taste it was enough to like me)
    - Samsho 5 Special (I fell in love with the artsyle, Rimururu and Mina, also I like the Fatalities)
    - Samsho 6 (Fast peace and traditional 2D Fighting game gameplay, that's my style, I don't like the strategical and methodical style of the first two games, I mean, they sure have something but they are not for me at all. Plus, Samsho 6 has so much characters, the OST is good besides not being traditional Japanese instruments, and the scenarios are beautiful. The only thing I don't like is the Final Boss because is too hard)
And yeah yeah, I know I complain too much about the censorship in V Perfect but Samsho 6 doesn't need Gore to be a Samsho, is a Samsho on it's own way and it's very beautiful weird Samsho.

and that's odd. because i've played the hell out of every single neo geo game and i still to this day consider Samurai Shodown III the best. love the slash/bust system. love the air-blocking.. (reminding me of street fighter alpha 3)... love that i have a evade ability that doubles as dash-around-to-my-opponents-back. sam sho III destroys sam sho 1 and II and makes them feel and look like crap

Even in 2022, i buy de SamSho Collection just To remember.
SamSho 1 i think: “Damn the game is good, but is TOO HEAVY, lack of movments, but is OK.
A few hours later i Play SamSho 2, and think:
“Daaamn every aspects that i see a problem in first game they correct, without lost the “essence” and “Core Mecanic”
(A Fighting Game focused on Counter and Whiffs)
    With splendid atmosphere.
Then after 5 days playing ONLY SanSho 2.
I tested the rest of Collection: 3,4,5,5s,5sP
    Ohhhhh boy 😩
After 2, the franchising CLEARLY Focus on COMBO game. 😓

I honestly think the only bad samurai shodown games are sen and warriors rage for ps1. 3, vanilla 5, the two neo geo pocket games and the two hyper neo geo 64 games are very playable and I think they’re all fun overall to play. Also I never played the rpg and the nakoruru visual novel on Dreamcast doesn’t count as a game to me so overall I’ll say you got the games on the list correct except I would have samurai shodown 6 at number 6 because although it has a massive roster and all the different play style inspirations from each game and then some, the music in the game kind of sucks, I’m not a fan of the festival theme that it went with, the hit boxes are all over the place and some of the play styles are kind of useless and plus I’m not a fan that they reused a bunch of characters sprites from previous games and obviously the gore was removed entirely which isn’t a deal breaker but it matters when you’re doing rankings.
With that being said my top 5 would be
    5. Samurai shodown (Still think it has the best soundtrack in the entire series, love amakusa ad the final boss in the game, graphics were fantastic for the time and each character really felt different and unique from each other)
    4. Samurai shodown 5 special ( Great update to samurai shodown 5, good soundtrack although I prefer each character to have their own song instead, Overkill moves were cool, roster was really good, not a big fan of the hot damage taken though, it’s very similar to samurai shodown 3 where it’s possible to lose in just 3 hits.
    3. Samurai shodown 2019 (Fantastic reboot, great roster, great graphics, good music, love that the parry/just defend from samurai shodown 2 was much easier to come out taking inspiration from garou mark of the wolves. I feel like there wasn’t too much innovation in the gameplay though, the rage explosion, 3 slash and a kick buttons, the fatal flash/Issen option after the rage explosion are all taken from samurai shodown 4 and it would’ve been nice if they continued with the overkill/fatality moves that samurai shodown 5 special had instead of the cinematic super special moves that they put which doesn’t do a whole lot for me personally. Still an awesome game
    2. Samurai shodown 2 (Pretty much took everything the first game had and made it better except the soundtrack which is still good but I prefer the first games a bit more. Graphics are beautiful, Roster is great, gameplay is fluid, first official fighting game to have parry’s, your characters movement is much better, supers were added, you can even transform into a doll for some reason. The only reason why this game isn’t number 1 to me is because the game is a little too unbalanced and when I used to play it online on the 360 back then, it was really annoying that all I was playing against was a bunch of ukyo players. Other than that the game is amazing
    1. Samurai shodown 4 (I mentioned already when talking about samurai shodown 2019 what this game added already and to add to that the game looks great, has a very good soundtrack, the gameplay is fast and fluid, a combo system was added which doesn’t do much damage but feels so satisfying to pull off, rage explosion was done the best in this game because it gives you a couple options to do with it from just doing a regular super, to doing an automatic combo which can cancel into a super if timed correctly or you can do a fatal flash/issen which can take massive damage. The game also introduced sort of a beta version of overkill moves that we got in samurai shodown 5 special where basically if you kick your opponents ass both rounds you can pull off a fatality of some sort. The game also has a harakiri move where if you want to kill yourself a round you can and then the next round your rage meter will be full. Also one more thing to add when your rage meter is full, some of the characters moves will become an enhanced or ex version automatically and will deal more damage than usual which looks great aesthetically as well. Throw in a good roster, a slash and bust system which gives each character a different move set and super move and you got yourself in my opinion the best samurai shodown game there is. The only two flaws I believe the game has is the class system is pretty pointless, there’s beginners, Medium and upper class and beginners class gives you some automatic blocks but also limits your moves as well which sucks, the medium class is just regular games and then the upper class which is utterly useless, doesn’t let you block and unlike samurai shodown 3 which at least the class makes your rage meter full for the entire match, samurai shodown 4 for whatever reason took that out and now you just got a class where you can’t block for whatever reason. Other than that the game is a masterpiece

won't ever support modern fighting games that release a physical incomplete roster game, plagued with DLC. Give me the whole roster of fighters at start (or unlockable through the game) and i will pay for your game. That is why old collections like this, or ported last gen games, are the best because they come with the full roster, am looking forward to TKOF XIII global match, should be complete

I can agree with all of the games listed except SamSho 6. Im just really not a fan of it. It doesn’t feel like SamSho to me at all: The gameplay is nothing like the other games, it’s almost closer to something like Guilty Gear, the stages lack the beautiful atmosphere the earlier games had, it’s way too “lively” and bright, and overall it just feels and looks hollow and cheap to me in comparison to the previous games. Everything about it just feels “off” to me.
Also I love SS3, yea I know it was buggy and unbalanced but man I absolutely love the art, music, the dark mood and atmosphere, and the presentation. So yea it’s one of my favorite games in the series despite its flaws.

I’m perfectly happy aging the older, COMPLETE 2D games. Not only do they not have DLC garbage, in my eyes, there is nothing more beautiful that great 2D pixel art. I also refuse to buy incomplete games and support these companies releasing DLC. It’s garbage. Sell the game complete. It’s obvious they keep certain characters put, even though they are ready, just to
sell them to people that foolishly waste their money. There are too many Indy games out there that get released COMPLETE and don’t try to sell you crap they have held back. The few that do come out with dlc, do it LONG after releasing their games when they see that people are buying the first game. Big difference.

Samsho2 I think is just overated. Agree that it is much better than the first game, but the game has too many bugs which leads to the critical imbalance between the characters, and the gameplay somtimes depends too much on lucky if you don't have Pow explosion. Throwing is awful and perry in this game is almost useless neither. I play 2 first but after playing 4, 5 and 5 special I don't really like 2 anymore.
