- After over 25-years there are A TON of King of Fighters games! I've gone back and replayed nearly every single one to determine what the very best in the series are. After some surprises and also reordering several titles more times than I can remember I've compiled this list of The 10 Best King of Fighters Games you can possibly play!
Even if you'd rank them differently, it's hard to argue against the games that made this list being the very best in the franchise. So whether you're a seasoned KOF veteran or a newcomer to the series, this list should be useful in determining the top King of Fighters games you need to get your hands on ASAP!

KOF XI needs to be in modern consoles. That's the rare gem of the series.

I am happy 2003 made your top 10. I find that game super fun, the tag system opened many opportunities for combos. I like it way more than the striker system. Ash, Duo Lon and Shen Woo are awesome.

Man KOF 15 is the beacon of hope for gaming. It's the only game I've been hyped for since 2020.
I agree that making a list is damn near impossible. I like every single one for different reason and even the worst of the mainline series are better than most fighting games.
It basically just comes down to preference and which characters you like.
The KOF series is like crack man, I can't put it down when ever I jump back into the games.
I'm really hoping E3 will have some stuff to get hyped over, but at the moment KOF15 is more than enough. I'm freakin loving these weekly character reveal trailers!

It's also tough waiting for some of the reveals. I get that they're going ot leave the real surprises until later, but I was almost going crazy waiting for Blue Mary lol.
I LOVE King of Fighters! Best fighting game series ever in my opinion! This is an awesome list and super well made video! Though for me personally KOF 98 ultimate match and KOF XI would definitely be at the top. Looking forward to KOF XV!
my wife walked in while i was playing KOFXIV, and she asked me which ps2 game it was. I really hate those graphics with a passion. KOFXIII had amazing graphics (sans some backgrounds), but overall the 2D sprite games look tons better

That intro was how I felt about KoF since I was a kid! It's my favorite 2D fighting game. As for my favorite, it's very difficult to choose but I love KoF 98, 99, 2002 13 & 97.
King of Fighters 13 should've been number 1, it's by far the best King of Fighters game.

Great list. KOF is probably my favorite fighting game franchise out there, there's not a single mainline game that I hate (yes, I even like 2001 and 12, they're far from great games but I enjoy them). My favorite would probably have to be 13 though, it has my absolute favorite mechanics in the series, and the spritework is beautiful (2002 Unlimited Match & 98 Ultimate Match aren't too far behind though).

10. King of Fighters 2003
I haven't played XI yet so that's why it's not on this list in case you're wondering. My opinion could very well change later once I've played it I honestly have a huge soft spot for 2001 despite its terrible in-game artwork and bad ratio mechanic
KoF 2002 UM for me doesn't feel right?
1) The characters seem smaller than usual and less beefy looking.
2) It feels rather floaty with no sense of impact.
3) There's only a few stages and they don't really bring atmosphere to the fight.
4) It does feel more like a button masher.
5) Most backgrounds are a bit too safe and a bit too bland .

Most kof pros don't even acknowledge 14's existence. It's visuals aside, it's mechanics are dog poo.

3:26 Oh, I know MI wasn't lauded; it just happened to be the one my relatives owned. It seems easier to control than others, but the AI is so damned aggressive that I've never beaten the final boss, Duke, with any of the characters I tried. If it'll be remembered for anything, it's my not beating it and having my favorite portrayal of Athena.

I can absolutely understand your point of view too; Mark of the Wolves is an outstanding game in nearly every way. Definitely the best Fatal Fury games by far.

I think kof15 is bringing back the unlockables, just recently we saw that kof15 comes with 39 character but the select screen showed 13 locked slots. People are saying that those are DLC slots but I doubt it, why would they announce 6 dlc characters for deluxe editions and show 13 locked slots as "dlc" Im sure SNK wants to shatter expectations and give us 13 free extra characters to unlock

The 2002s are essentially a copy of the 98s. 2002 sucks but 2002 UM was a redemption.

I love SF3 3rd strike. But man, going from KOF 98 to that made me hate how capcom fighters feel.

Nice list and good to see 2003 getting some respect some people said it is the worst kof even worse then 12 but for me it is a solid kof game and 14 i saw some idiot comment this is the worst game ever while it is very fun to play and easily top 5 best kof games. Now with 15 coming out we have a lot of whiners complaining about the game just because of how it looks and some say it looks the same as 14 which is false and i think that 15 might be one of the best if not the best kof game 2002 um is the best kof game but even the best games can get dethroned and if i say 15 is better then 2002 um i don't wanna hear anyone whine and get triggered because atleast i'm not shitting on a game that isn't out yet. Nah the part about kof 14 Graphics was absolute cap.
The not only are the faces completely grotesque but the shading makes it look even worse.
I cannot believe this got past quality control by any stretch. Absolutely horrendous. I have seen ps2 games with better graphics.
My favorite character is by far, Vanessa. So for the most part I only play the kof games with her. She's just so badass!
I'm going to lose my shit if she's announced for KOF 15.
I'm hoping she's the illusive final member of the Female Fighters team. Evem being with Ramone or Seth would be awesome too as long as she's in it. I don't think I'll be able to handle how awesome she is if they do announce her lol

My accent has less to do with the way I normally talk and more to do with me not being accustomed to reading off a script while also keeping my normal breathing rhythm and cadence. If you've never tried narration it's hard to explain. Some people are able to do it naturally, but I'm not one of those people. My accent is just of a person from the western US, so I normally don't talk much different than someone from California, Idaho or Colorado.

my issue with the KoF franchise these days, is the ownership of the company. It's majority owned by a Saudi Prince. I've been into KoF since KoF 95. I have 95, 96,97 on the Saturn. KoF 98, 99, 2001, 2002, on the DC and I few releases on the OG XBox. As for the newer releases I'm a bit out of touch where they were released..for me tho I need a joystick..I have a hard time playin' fighters on a game pad. My heart dropped a bit when I heard back in 2020 that majority of shares of SNK was owned by a Saudi Prince. It doesn't feel right to me. Regardless of how much I love the KoF franchise.

I think king of fighters 14 , 13 and 11 are really good and then 98 was the greatest ones of all time
I didn't like it as much as the first one, but it was a pretty good game with an interesting story. The switcharoo halfway through the game surprised and irriated me at first, but I actually enjoyed the second half of the game more than the first half. I get why some people don't like it and the identify politics are very heavy handed, but beyond that I liked it.

KOF 2002 > kof 2002 um
With the exception of King of fighters 11,13,14 all these games had dated graphics even during the time they were released. Why play King of Fighters 97 when you could have played Street Fighter 3. Why play King of Fighters 99 when you could play Street Fighter Alpha/ Zero. Why play King of Fighters 2002 when you could have played Capcom VS SNK 2. There was always a better fighter out there. I don't know how anyone could have enjoyed this Atari animation.

The order is a little arbitrary, but who could argue about 95 and 99 having the most gorgeous stage backgrounds? All these games are visual masterpieces. The ones that came after? They wouldn't hold à candle to these games in terms of art.
