As a poor kid, I remember hearing rumors in school about this NeoGeo that was capable of playing arcade perfect games at home, but at an insane price our parents could never afford. I remember I saw the AES and its games on display at an "electronics" store near my school once. It was like staring at the Holy Grail.
Always heard that MVS carts were huge. Thanks for sharing the comparison shot, as well as the story behind the last released MVS title. Appreciate the content!
Everytime I see a AES/ MVS cart being compared to another cartridge it always reminds me of comparing a Laserdisc to a dvd? Great video Ron keep them coming bro!
Around 1995, a local comic shop had a used Neo. I traded in my Genesis, 32x, Sega cd, and a ton of games to get it. Still loving it (and still getting games) in 2020. They'll have to pry my Metal Slug 3 cart from my cold dead hands...
I really enjoyed this video. I bought an AES Gold system back in 1992 with the memory card, two controllers, Fatal Fury and Burning Fight. I still have it today. It's my favorite console. The Dreamcast and Genesis are pretty good, too.
@@macgyver6999 The AES is the home version of the Neo Geo, while the MVS is the arcade version of the Neo Geo. The hardware was the same, but they used different cartridges. AES Gold was just a package of the console version of the Neo Geo that they sold. It included the home console, two joystick controllers, a memory card and a game. I think the silver version was the home console, and one joystick controller, no game or memory card. The MVS system is the arcade version of the Neo Geo. It takes different carts, but the software is the same for the arcade and the home console. The CD home console played the games from a CD as opposed to a cartridge. I have never played a NEO Geo CD, but they say that the load times are horrendous on the single speed USA version. I believe there was a Japanese Neo Geo CD that had a 2x speed CD player that had shorter load times, but I think it was still an annoying way to play if you were used to playing a cartridge Neo Geo. But the CD games were much less expensive, probably around $60 versus $200 for a cartridge AES game. Hope that helps.
Wow! Changing the game up, very cool retrospective on Neo Garoua/SS5, this was so different than what you normally do-but was done very well. Your personality still pops out even on something like this-it works!
I'd definately be down for more content like this from your channel bro, I enjoyed this! SS is one of favorite fighting franchises and I didn't know any of this about V Special.
Thanks dude~ this video was definitely a different direction. Was just something I was so interested in and intrigued by had to find a way to make it into a video~
This was cool! A lil different than your usual faire but thoroughly enjoyable none the less. I'd love it if you did more deep dives like this. Cheers!🍻
Neo Geo was one of the top systems I never got to Enjoy mostly cause of that crazy price. It only makes sense it was so expensive cause you got that arcade quality you couldn’t play on any other video game system at the time. I believe Arcade Pro Stick is one of the cheapest NEO GEO systems and definitely best priced compared to AES system as of right now. If your Rumors are right about NEO GEO 3 we might be looking at best SNK system of today. I’ll keep my fingers crossed Mad! Thanks for all your awesome content and cool live streams!
got heavy into neogeo in the wii VC era of course played the ubiquitous big red cabs but didnt realize there was a home system until years later... one of my absolute favorite systems killer library, and got me into arcade superguns
I have a question I've always wondered about: The 1 million sales figure. Does that include the MVS, AES, and NGCD? If so, is there any data that can separate between the 3 and give us definitive numbers? Would be really interesting to know!
The about 1 million is just the home console AES. The Neo Geo CD separately sold under 600,000 and the MVS was extremely popular. Multiple versions of the MVS board to use different amounts of carts. Im not sure if anyone knows the sales figures on the MVS...
@@Madlittlepixel Thanks for the info, that makes sense. I was reading on Wikipedia where it said the number for all 3 combined was 1 million- which didn't sound right at all. I remember seeing so many MVS cabinets around when I was a kid- I'm guessing the total MVS sales were well over a million.
@@AdamJDM1 Yeah there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Numbers that are a bit more specific that I have seen have been 980,000 Neo Geo AES & Neo Geo CD 570,000 sold with the MVS having somewhere around 1 million boards sold in the world. None of those numbers are extremely high... and im not really sure on the MVS numbers.
I bought the Neo Geo AES shortly after it came out. I was 14 and worked as a paperboy for 2 companies. It broke shortly after the warranty and didn't think about getting it repaired until 2 months after SNK announced that they aren't doing repairs anymore. I still have it and I'm not sure if I should sell it in its current condition. I looked at the PCB and it looks brand new and I didn't see anything wrong with it.
When I was a kid the local arcade was attached to the Bar. And, in the neighboring town there was a playground right beside the Bar. That's Canadian ingenuity right there! Who needs a babysitter to go out drinking?.....Not Canadians! :)
Pretty cool! i will never forgive SNK for changing the weapon that Wan-Fuu uses on SS2, lol. He had a giant sword that was changed for a crappy stone pilar
This is a really interesting video. Not many people think about Samurai Shodown V Special, and barely have a familiarity with the first 2. The rarity of this game can't be understated. Not only was it in short release both in Japan and US, it was only released in Japan on the MVS. Finding the AES version will run you in the $2500-4000 range. The MVS version will catch upwards to $1000 and is I believe the most valuable MVS cart. Also, finding the "unfixed" version makes it even rarer. This is a heavily modified/bootlegged game as well, so you really have to be careful if you are brave enough to attempt to buy a copy.
Nice well made video man I don't know how you only have 86.9k subs. Anything we can do to help you get to say least the 200k Mark? I've tried sharing your channels with friends but to no avail.
Biggest thing to help me out is liking and commenting on my videos. Biggest help there can be, as it helps get TH-cam to recommend my videos more often to non subscribers~ Thanks man~~~
Great video! My first time experiencing ANY AES games was the neo Geo mini international and snk 40th anniversary collection on switch, with exception of few arcades tht had some there machines and the few ports on snes and genesis.......the reason i never owned one as a kid???!!!! Becasue my parents were not millionaires.....lol
Nice video MLP! I still to this day have yet to hold a Neo Geo in my hands and I haven't even dug into emulation much so the Neo Geo is still very much foreign to me. Where I grew up we had one shitty arcade with mostly busted ass cabs so arcade gaming wasn't big for me as well. Dug the video, you should definitely try and squeeze vids like these into your repertoire more often.
I own the MVS version which released before the school incident and has no censorship whatsoever. I enjoy playing it from time to time on a consolized 2 slots.
Thanks. And with Sam Sho RPG I definitely want to do something with that game for a video. I have a sealed Neo Geo CD copy of it lol, may as well try to get some use out of it.
I totally get were your coming from as a child of the 80 and 90s my brothers and I loved arcades and would drool over the Neo Geo catalogue at the back of gaming magazines just wishing we had the money to mail order one. That being said if Arcade 1 up ever comes out with a machine with black tiger on it I am so there. I've been turning my PC into a legal place to play arcade games but its just not the same. I know I can pick up a Pandoras box but is it worth the price?
If anyone is interested, SamSho V Special on steam is very well done (rollback netcode!) and inexpensive. I picked it up on sale for five bucks, but I think full price is ten. And yes, Kusaregedo is still horrifying.
Lol I dunno he was just hanging around during the Kong Off... This was last year. I talked to him a bit, have met him a few times. I dunno in person he comes off as a cool dude. Gave me a couple bottles of his hot sauce and some signed Not MAME stickers 😂

It was only a legend talked about at the lunchroom table, and only by the nerd at the end of the table... who was my best friend lol.
Nice to see you do a “history of” video! I actually just got my AES in the mail today. Stoked to plug it in! Keep it comin brother.
Congrats to an awesome console! Did you get any first games with it?
Love this type of well researched video. Thanks man.
I like the documentary style video, man! It's nice to see content formats change up once in a while.
Great video! Documentary seems like a great genre for you. I learned a lot about the system and I hope you do more of these.
Thanks, definitely up for exploring more topics like this.
Love this format! Please do more vids like this!
Cool to see videos like this delving into gaming history. I like these sort of retrospectives into consoles and games past.
Been waiting to see this! Watching now!
I dig it! You should definitely throw these history/ documentary style videos into the mix more often. Keep up the great work 👍
Oh wow I remember all the talk about this release on the old neogeo forums. Brings back memories. Great video!
