    This touched my heart. 37, been a nurse for 14 years, and nursing was slowly stealing my joy and happiness. I was giving and giving and not getting anything in return and my body was telling me to rest and I wasn't listening. This is the best video that I have seen explaining the ups and downs of nursing. As a single nurse I'm reclaiming my life and going to prioritize God and myself first. Thank you Shannon 🙏

    I'm so proud of you Shannon! I quit my job as an RN last two years ago after almost 13 years in the field. It was not an easy decision, but life is too short to dread going to work everyday. No amount of money can buy real happiness, but friends I'm not asking you to resign from your job or abandon your business but be wise!

    Been working bedside for 10 months on a medsurg unit. I'm completely over it. I'm looking for an exit at the moment. The lack of time to eat/use bathroom, the 7-8 pt load, management not caring that we're struggling yet sending more pts, the toll it takes physically and mentally smh. I give nurses props who do it longterm, I really do

  • @blueeyes4233

    Nursing isn’t for everybody some people go into it not knowing what it all really entails.
    1) it’s not a money maker, you can live comfortably but your not gonna get rich
    2) travelers do get dumped on, not all the time but it does happen - I have multiple stories. When I work charge I make the best fair assignments I can regardless if they are staff or traveler.
    3) yes it is very hard work nobody realizes all the different hats we wear. A lot of these are young people who don’t have a lot of life experience. Now your dealing with not only a sick patient but family, doctors, nothing is like school.
    4) I think schools are failing students- most of them don’t have the experience of taking on an assignment themselves with the guidance of a nurse.
    5) Hospitals are failing us - think it is related to money & also due to health insurance requirements. They expect you to chart, chart, chart & then chart again. Plus take care of the patient & if you can’t do that your told your have poor time management.
    6) Bedside nursing isn’t for everybody but as more experienced nurses leave the beside it leaves less experienced nurses there to ‘figure it out’ NOT SAFE. We need experienced bedside nurses.
    I don’t mind working hard I still like my job & grateful to have one & be apart of the nursing team. I try to be a good example to all the others out there but there has to be a balance of what the hospital expects from us to what we actually can do.
    My golden rule is don’t ask anything out of anyone that you can’t do yourself.
    Good Luck on your future endeavors!

      This was VERY helpful! I don’t think I’ve seen a more in-depth breakdown of nursing yet! I’ve been going back and forth with myself on if I should spend the time and money on going back for nursing. I work as a caregiver and have loads of experience but never completed nursing school for various reasons. I just always felt in between… not sure if anyone else feels the same but I thank you again for this comment. It has helped me understand what’s really going on vs what we are told.

  • @tisha4lives
    @tisha4lives 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Bedside was NEVER for me. I hated it, it was a stepping stone for me. The reason I hated bedside? The POLITICS AND LEADERSHIP, it's more about kissing the patients a$$ rather than helping them. It's not about safety or what's right but it's about money. I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU SAID. I came in being hopeful and now I work from home making WAY more money but I'm still leaving nursing after 10 years in the profession. Because working from home has some of the same elements in terms, of leadership, politics and the WORSHIP of the almighty dollar.

    Thank you for keeping it real and transparent. Sick and tired of all the dancing around the subject and not telling it like it is. You are beautiful, smart, and very eloquent. 16 years in and 3 nursing degrees and I’m applying at gas stations and whatever. My mental health is shot, my back is broken but the moral injury is the worst.
    I asked somebody once how is it possible that they had been in the field 39 years at the bedside. The answer was easy and I had not really given any thought. The patients were not as sick back in the day. They did not come to the hospital with 15 different medications and 15 different medical ailments. Life was much easier without all the redundant charting, and the nurses had time to give their patients a massage. In a nutshell, the profession has gone down the drain and become all about the bottom dollar.
    To think I still have 25 years before I could retire, seriously makes me want to just die sooner. We’re not okay.

I now depend on the money because you live according to you're income at 43 starting a new career doesn't appeal to me I cut my hours back to help with burnout and I take time off every 3 to 4 months go away and relax and it's really helped me relax better have a better outlook on life and working as a nurse.

No matter where you go you still run into staffing issues, lack of resources, unsafe/unfair assignments, lack of team work, to name a few are reasons why I'm exiting the field full time.

I’ve only been a nurse for a year but the pay they give even to seasoned nurses is crazy. I’ll stay doing what I’m doing and making double or triple the pay and picking up new skills along the way. I was the only one interesting in aesthetic nursing but it was hard to get insight on since my teachers did those common specialties and were much older. I couldn’t get any tips or guides on how I can get myself into the aesthetic world. I’m glad to have found your page because I haven’t found a lot of people who document the ins and outs. I LOVE IT...I can't blame you ONE BIT. At least YOU made it through nursing school. I dropped out after ONE semester KNOWING it wasn't for me anyway from the time I started doing the prerequisites to get into nursing school. Why did I do it? I was attempting to think of other career endeavors and outlets for myself and I had just so happened to get laid off around that time. My husband and father kept raising nursing as an option (though even before when they suggested it, I said "no") and when I saw the many options nurses had, namely social work nurse and nurse aesthetician I figured "Mmmm with my background and experience in social services coincided with nursing, why not?" Now honestly, it also could've been something with the school I attended because frankly, it was a private nursing school that seemed to end up being a money-draining pit with "extra rules and required courses" adding on by the weeks. One policy would be one way prior to attending, and then right before starting, soimething else changed and then once enrolled, another thing changed and frankly, only being allowed to purchase books from the school versus any available resource for a much cheaper price was ludacris. Nevertheless, I knew it really wasn't in me entirely anyway...I was more interested in the social services and/or administrative side of healthcare and so...I earned a master's in healthcare administration instead followed by one in clinical psych.

    I realized that I'm a licensed drug dealer. I barely provide any care at work, because I'm so busy passing hundreds of pills per day. Also, the culture at most nursing homes is that nurses are expected to not do much besides push pills. People in nursing homes are getting younger and younger too..ppl who just gave up. They gather around the nurse' cart during med pass and catch an attitude if the pill is a second late. At the hospital, I was looked down upon because I spoke up and said that as a new grad on otientation, I felt uncomfortable with all 7 patients instead of 3....I had to quit. Now though, I'm working as an agency nurse with an average of 23-35 patients. Its quite scary and frustrating....again, I feel like a licensed drug dealer more than a nurse.

    You are SO right about the glorification of being your own boss...I'm glad you're being honest and clear about the entrepreneurial route because I've watched SO many TH-cam videos glorifying running your own business and "being your own boss" to the degree that the lingo and rhetoric that they speak about seems geared towards making people feel "inadequate" or we're wasting our time and our lives if we aren't working for ourselves versus a traditional 9-5. The way some entrepreneurs speak it's as if they don't care to accept that NOT EVERYONE CARES to "be their own boss" and feel just fine either working a 9-5 along with a regular side gig OR just ONE 9-5 JOB. It's just that when it comes to making money, EVERYONE MUST BE THEIR OWN BOSS, PERIOD. Then, they get to flashing their material gains and lifestyles, talk about how much they love what they do which they "work hard for" and "put in the work" which is about as honest as they would be, but it's SO glorified and almost like shaming folks working 9-5 (lol) for doing so.

I wanna be happy with the career that I will choose I’m currently in my last semester of college for medical assistant/phlebotomist .I already knew that I did not wanna be a nurse I just knew that it was not the career for me . I wanna become a Physical Therapist instead which I am going back to school for after I graduate they make more money than a nurse but shoutout to the nurses tho and it is a lot of people quitting being a nurse because it’s getting stressful

    I knew one week into nursing school that bedside wasn’t for me. I’m interested in LOW STRESS jobs. Aesthetic nursing is #1 but extremely competitive. I’m also thinking about lactation, remote jobs, and school/camp nursing. CRNA, NP, and PA school are also on the list if I’m motivated enough to get my masters. There’s sooo many options.

      School/Camp RN is low pay. CRNA programs have switched to Doctoral. I think they are trying to make the doctorate mandatory by 2025. Remote isn’t a speciality. It’s the location out of which you practice your specialty. So, you’d likely need some experience first. I have seen NP programs that don’t require work experience. But make sure you choose a specialty that isn’t acute care. Those would still be NPs who work in the hospital. A PA is a physician’s assistant. That’s a different degree. They are basically equivalent to NPs. However, they work under doctors. There are numerous states where NPs can function independent of a doctor. That means they can have their own practice. PAs can’t do that. I hear that ambulatory nursing isn’t as stressful.

    • @trinitysmith2226
      @trinitysmith2226 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@peacefreedom4930 I’m not sure what state you’re in, but in my state all CRNA programs are 2 years. 3 maximum. There are many key differences between NPs and PAs aside from business ownership. Just because a BSN isn’t a requirement doesn’t mean nurses can’t do it. I actually know a few PAs who started off as nurses. I know remote nursing isn’t a specialty. I don’t care about specialty which is why I just said remote. I also don’t care about pay I care about peace.

Being in that hospital environment around sickness and death all the time where you have patients like you said who aren’t really there to get better. We are just keeping them alive for however long they have. Not fulfilling for me.

Plus it was less expensive, and insurance covered more. Patients actually stayed in the hospital to recover! Now the patient only receives immediate care, and then discharged. The entire system went from service to high level stress over my working years.

    Well done. Im only a unit secretary but even from my point of view I am able to see the treatment of nurses/physicians is subpar. Always short staffed, and the nurses who show up are forced to pick up the slack. Patients are rude and entitled, and yelling at you for following protocol. Getting aggressive with you when you're trying to help them. Shit is stupid.

    As a fellow nurse, as well as travel nurse you are sooo right about facilities not having caring about patient safety! It’s so crazy how nursing schools emphasize so heavily on patient safety and safe staffing ratios but the reality is that hospitals don’t uphold those standards. It’s scary and unfortunate how these hospitals try to do the most with minimal staff and resources even though they definitely have the money to do better. I feel like after almost 10 years as a nurse I am at a cross road to what my next move will be. Thank you for your perspective and good luck on all your future adventures❤️❤️❤️❤️

That’s where my hesitation comes in because I am scared to lose the security I have with this job. But I’ve had this in my mind since the first year of the pandemic realizing how devalued I was as a bedside nurse. A lot of hospitals really do not care about their staff and see us as replaceable. They did us so wrong where I work and every since I have been thinking of a way out, med spa being that way out! I would love to hear how you went about starting your business because I don’t have a business partner and no one to bounce ideas off of. I NEED OUT!!! Bedside is slowly killing my spirit.

Working a Med surgical unit and getting 7 patients is dangerous. I can’t do it. I LOVE this video! This is the best “I quit nursing” video. After COVID I realized how hospitals were just a business. I worked at a hospital with very little resources. We would regularly run out of flushes, green caps, alcohol wipes, IV sets, and a few other things. We would take a saline 1L bag and I would make flushes. We would carry a little alcohol bottle and wet paper to clean IV ports. To get IV starter kits we would have to scavenge them. I would see admin making the craziest decisions that made no sense for the nurses OR for the patients. That made me realize this is just a business and after being angry about this, I changed my mindset. I can choose to leave, I can choose to learn another skill and leave nursing. I’m currently transitioning but I agree nursing gives you a lot of opportunity. I currently work as a school nurse with an agency making almost double from what I made in the hospital. I have a friend in the real estate business and I’m learning from him. For nurses that want to start a business, I see one mistake very often. Please talk to people who already have done the business. Pay someone who is doing it 200 for an hr of their time and ask them their margins, is the business profitable, the pros but dig into the cons. A lot of nurses go into business and believe because you have a good heart you can have a successful business. Business has another skillset you must learn. Look
    At the margins in business. Someone has a million dollars revenue and we think they rich but if they take home 10% then they take 100k a year. That’s a lot of work for very little money. That business will run you into the ground. GODSPEED
