If you want to be in the medical field just for the money, Dental Hygienist is the business. An associates degree that makes $60-$70/hr. Crazy cool but teeth is not for me! But as a Technologist you can make more than a nurse such as the Lab jobs Catheterization Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, and Angio Lab. So I'm team technologist $3,000-$4,000/week as a traveler!! Yeszir
I live in ATL. I'm in a new grad residency, been working 7 months in oncology. I take home just north of $5,000 a month. I'm already over bedside nursing. I've applied to PMHNP school and start in May, exactly one year after graduating with my BSN.
I can attest to the $5,000 a month for staff nursing in Atlanta. I’m also in a new grad residency in the ER as well and I bring home about the same thing
As a PCU nurse travel is the best for peace. I just came back from GA making 8k/month and took the whole month of feb off. I may stay home for march. We are the same, I hate bedside but give premium care when I’m at work. The rates a still doable as long as it’s an affordable area.
I miss seeing your videos… this was a really good one. I’ll def be in Cali doing travel . Cause baaby when i tell u the med surg floor I’m on is freaking crazy and I’m at the beginning stages of my nursing career as an LPN. (Side note I’m going back for my BSN this year in a few months ). But I will say my preceptor and supervisor was like if u can make it on this floor u can make it anywhere so this is the only reason why I’m even dealing with this crazy ass floor lol . But i do work PRN at a couple of nursing homes (good ones, not dirty or ghetto ones lol) and part time as an aesthetic nurse as well. I can’t wait to start traveling tho and get a feel for that even before i get my BSN. Thanks for all the helpful info all the nursing girlies needed this including myself. 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎
You sound kinda like KeKe Palmer to me.....I'm in nursing school and I graduate this summer, so this was informative. (I don't plan on going agency any time soon though)
My love for nursing is still there but bedside nursing for this little but if money is getting old. As a staff nurse, they continue to add more responsibilities but they are not adding more pay. This is why I’m considering returning to travel nursing but I don’t want to have to owe a lot to Uncle Sam.
What impresses me about your page is its focus on providing valuable information, inspiring me to start my program with excitement and confidence this fall.
Keep your options open..there is another TH-camr that works PRN in Cali for Kaiser..and she posted that her hospital told them there are not offering any PRN shifts for a month and a half until sometime in April.
Thank you for the video!! I’ve been traveling for a min now. I can honestly say the money is great, but I’m returning to staff. I travel with Aya, and at least two times I have been baited into a contract and they changed the terms/contract. I will miss the autonomy, but I need stability.
Yeah I went home and switched specialties. No more med surg for me. The stipends weren't enough for me to pay my bills. I'm single and I have to pay all of my own bills. I don't split anything. I wish I was part of a traveling couple/duo. In that case, it would still be worth it.
Aya be trying to get over on ppl. Most of all these agencies. I just move around with whoever gives me the best rate. I had to stand on business a few times when they tried to lower my intial rate- like naw don't try me! But I get needing stability, so I do my best to be strategic with my finances so I can move how I want. Hoping staff nursing will be good to you!
So I work Baylor, meaning I work every weekend only but I’m still considered full time including benefits. I work 24 hours a week but the pay is increased to equal full time level. I still earn pto and vacation time and I can take a weekend off every 3 months (using pto hours of course). And if I pick up an extra shift it’s at the increased rate so it’s lovely. Best decision I ever made in my nursing career so far! I too am in school for psych np.
Had to pause the video to make this comment. I can't stand when people say you shouldn't get into nursing for the money. Go away. Money is absolutely the motivator, but I gotta do right by my patients if i wanna keep the license which connects me to the money. Don't really care if that's not good enough for you.
Hi Shannon! Thank you for giving us so much value about the nursing world. I have a question for you. I am on the journey of starting nursing school. I will be done with my prerequisites this year and will apply to start next year in spring. I would like to do travel nursing after nursing school. Would you recommend working as a new grad staff nurse for a year to gain experience and skills before applying to do travel nursing? I’d appreciate any advice you can give. Thank you!
You should start traveling once you feel confident in your skills as a nurse. You should be able to take care of the sickest patients on the unit and feel confident about it. When you travel they are not going to teach you how to be a nurse. It’s expected. Hope that helps.
yes 2100 weekly good, i been a RN for 16 year and this year am taking a full time job after traveling and or being PRN/per diem my whole career because i need stable income. I will be at 90k yearly salary with 5k yearly bonus for retention. With OT i will for sure make over 100k which would be that 2000k weekly am use to. But 2100 weekly is good
I think you will be a great psych NP. I have heard that the schools do not provide the clinical site hours, and can be very difficult and expensive finding a clinical site. Do you have any suggestions about that?
Thanks! I have a few ppl lined up that I’ll be using. But yes I heard the same thing. Which is crazy bc if we paying all this money for school the least they could do is provide a clinical site
Hi. I’m a med-surg, LTAC RN. I’ve been a nurse for 18 years and I’ve worked in many different areas including Psych. I’ve completed one traveling assignment which I loved…the money was great but I had to IRS a lot of money. How do you avoid having to pay taxes as a travel nurse? Thanks!
Love all your vids, you have put me on sm as a new nurse. I’ve been a nurse for almost 2 years and I’ve been a per diem princess for a year now and absolutely love it. Love the flexibility and not being tied to an employer. However, I’m doing it outside of the hospital tho and love it fr. Thanks for all your wisdom 💕
the strikes, I’ve worked a couple. The agency usually let the nurses that work with them or have worked know the information first, and then it gets to everyone else. Options are slim. Also make profiles with strike agencies and have the profile complete will up your chances
Try Emory. Piedmont is a hit or miss depending on what location you work at. Some of their locations can be ghetto lol not hood but moreso crazy ratios, no resources, trash leadership etc.
Ooh girl! Don’t do psych nursing, not worth your safety or stress of dealing with the daily verbal or physical abuse. Also the workers usually working on the psych floor need to get admitted, cnas especially
It’s all about perspective. I’m going to open my own clinic. Psych is def a specialty you have to be made for. There is no in between. Every time I encounter a psych patient I love it. I’m a lil off myself so I guess I relate to the crazy folks lol
I agree with you. Psych pays more for a reason be careful. I’ve been a nurse in a Cali state Prison for 20 years. You will never be the same and I’ve been assaulted twice. The money is great, but no money is worth your safety and peace of mind!
Yall do realize im not talking about working in a behavioral health facility, right? Im about to be in an office either doing tele health or talking to somebody on a couch. Im def not going to the prisons! But I understand where yall coming from. Either way im getting that NP license lol
😂, yea, the staff seem to need committing than the actual patients. But even with that said, one has to know what they can deal with as far as staff attitudes and the actual diseased patients...
$8,400 is a lot of money. I make 75k a year my check each month as a day nurse is $3,850. Eight hundred and something. If I work some nights it bumps up to 4k a month. But I feel the amount of money I make taking care of myself is not enough to really move like how I wanna move, like how u was saying at the beginning of the video. I gotta wait to save up to make moves I don’t like that.
And strike nursing is the business but for the new people remember this "Don't leave guaranteed money for maybe money". So don't ever walk away from your contract for no strike because it's not guaranteed they will strike for you to make that quick money. Yeah dat!
Strike nursing is really a luck thing it’s easier to get on when you already working for The agency that’s being contracted to fill the need cuz they basically sent out a text blast . Once your in your on the first call list for every strike after that which why it’s so hard to get in.
If you want to be in the medical field just for the money, Dental Hygienist is the business. An associates degree that makes $60-$70/hr. Crazy cool but teeth is not for me! I was literally just talking about this. They make the same or more without all the headache that comes with patient care. I went the wrong route lol
Only issue with this route is that there is limited opportunity for career growth and diversification.
I live in ATL. I'm in a new grad residency, been working 7 months in oncology. I take home just north of $5,000 a month.
I'm already over bedside nursing. I've applied to PMHNP school and start in May, exactly one year after graduating with my BSN.

lol not hate bedside but naw I feel you! It's taxing which is why I've been working on my exit strategy
Shannon, thank you for always giving value. You are a true treasure on the subject of maximizing a nursing career.
You are so welcome!

The same thing happen to me. I started out on the worse unit in the hospital. Codes EVERYDAY! I said if I can make here I can make it anywhere 😩

They rarely pay staff nurse good, they barely paying travel nurses good 🥴
I am on one assignment, my first, and I am ready to be done with nursing altogether
😂 that’s a general consensus- I feel you
Join the club lol
Hey Shannon! You can bid on shift key! So the original rate was 45 and I upped it to 67 and they accepted my rate!
Really?! That’s good to know bc I was looking at those rates like who working for that?! lol
What impresses me about your page is its focus on providing valuable information, inspiring me to start my program with excitement and confidence this fall.
aww thanks! Good luck on everything!
Keep your options open..there is another TH-camr that works PRN in Cali for Kaiser..and she posted that her hospital told them there are not offering any PRN shifts for a month and a half until sometime in April.
Yea I’ve been hearing that it’s hard to pick up shifts at some hospitals. But I got 2 PRNs so far and hopefully those will keep me busy
Thank you for the video!!

yea med surg is one of the lower travel specialties. I def recommend doing ICU, CVICU etc. The more specialized seems like the more they pay you.
After I get my RN and I do my residency, I’m pro travel nurse. I’ve always wanted to do travel nursing.
You’ll enjoy it!
Wow that is crazy! I’m a L&D nurse here and I make 2,800 less than you as a new grad nurse!!! But 8,000 a month is really nice ❤❤❤
I want to be a l&d nurse

I'm trying to get like you. I need to find a per diem that's local instead of traveling all the way to Cali
2100 is better than what these staff jobs are paying EASILY. These jobs are lowballing !
