Jessica’s refusal of accepting the 1980’s as vintage was a mood! I would have thought she would embrace it, because that would mean Jessica, herself, is vintage.
Well, she is right tho. Vintage needs to be at least 60 years old. What's newer than that is retro. 🙂

I have a fabric advent calendar that I bought a few years ago! I don't have kids, so I put tea in the pockets and have a different flavour of tea each day during advent :)

I have a wooden advant calendar. I buy myself a box of chocolates at the end of November and put them in my calendar. So I'm not getting the pointless card and plastic disposable calendar and get to have good quality chocolates that I actually like. It also saves me money. An actual Lindor advent calendar costs £11. I got a box of Lindor for £6. If I wanted to switch things up and do a calendar of makeup, hair accessories, costume jewellery, or anything else, I could.

My brother and I had fabric advent calendars growing up, with little drawstring bags. They had candy, small toys, trinkets, cute erasers... The last bag usually had a note with the first clue of a treasure hunt for our morning present.

Advent calendars have been a thing here in Germany for ages and even my now 71 year old mother had one as a child.
Back in the day they all were made out of fabric and reusable and some out of wood.
We even had one in school for every class the parents helped fill every year. It's such a wonderful tradition and I'm kind of glad that it's slowly spreading throughout the world.
My grandma gave me an advent calendar when I was a few years old. I’m now “all grown up” and still use it, every year. Such a wonderful part of my childhood I’ve been able to carry with me.
when i was in fashion school the rule was 30 years is vintage, 50 years is retro, and 100 years is antique
Your beautiful 'embroidered' work is actually needlepoint. It is a beautiful piece of handwork and where I started my crafting. I found instructions in a woman's magazine in the 1970s and did it for years until I mostly switched to cross stitch.
I was looking at it and wasn't sure if it was needlepoint or cross stitch. I've never done needlepoint, but I do a LOT of cross stitch and I was just thinking about how much time that would take 🥲
@@kasamoon needlepoint is only half the number of stitches you need for the pattern, but you do have fill in every hole...
@@ElicBehexan yeah, that's what I thought. I've only done a few full coverage cross stitches so far and it is SO MUCH WORK
@@kasamoon I haven't done any of those because I figured out early on I just couldn't do large cross stitch. However, I loved to stitch on clothes and that became my gifts for family for years.

I love this channel, because I always end up learning at least one new thing every time I watch. Today, it's that the English call the lengthy fraying of tights/stockings "ladders". Two cou tries separated by a common language, indeed!
It’s very funny to think that ladders and runs are the same thing!
Ladders does make a lot of sense when you think about how it looks when the fabric rips.
It can also be used as a verb, e.g. "my tights always ladder" vs "I always get ladders in my tights" (either is grammatically correct).
My mom had 2 reusable advent calendars and they are staples of my fond Christmas memories as a child. I am in LOVE with Jessica’s. I hope it brings you all many years of joy
We have had a reusable advent calendar my entire life, and my brother and I adore it! I'm twenty four and we still insist on my mother filling it with chocolate each year 😂😂 Christmas is food for us, as long as we get our childhood Christmas foods we don't need anything else 😂
Regarding tights - I have small sharp nails and always had ladders in them until my grandma gave me the tip of clear nailpolish. You can reinforce the places you get ladders by putting the tights on and putting a tiny dot of clear nailpolish where the problems are and it will soak into the fibers and keep them from ripping. It will also stop a ladder in its tracks, and they're still washable. ♥
I grew up with the clear nail polish tip. That in itself is a vintage element, a throwback to “repair over replace” when most things were reused. I love that. I feel like vintage, for me, is a rejection of disposable culture.
What’s new to me is the term “ladders”. In the states, they are “runs”.
Brits win this one. Sure, once you get the smallest puncture they will “run” all the way down your leg but they look like ladders.
We’d also say nylons (even when not nylon) or stockings. Here, tights are very thick not sheer. Obviously it’s not a room, but usually when you see tights it’s on children. There are adult tights. I don’t think there are childrens stockings.

I wrote that 5 days ago. Today, I was putting a piece of teabag on a fingernail with a little crack in the center (between layers of clear polish).
My neice asked me what I was doing.
I said "it's like nail polish on nylons, it will protect it, prevent it from spreading ". She looked at me like I was crazy & finally said "you put nail polish on nylons?"
I had to call her mom. I just asked what do you do if you get a run in a nylon?. She instantly responded "nail polish" & my niece kinda giggled out of surprise. I don't think she'd believed me.
We just don't wear them as much as we used to, and when we do it's so easy to just toss & replace.
Seeing the knowledge of my generation that is being forgotten makes me wonder about all the information lost to history generation after generation.
I've already bought the gifts for this year (they are hidden all around the house in unusual places so my family members don't find them 😅). However I really liked three (maybe four) ideas the best:
1. the broaches
2. the books
3. the embroidery
4. the VPN for the younger ones that use streaming services
I've been raised with the belief that gifts for Christmas should be simbolic because we need to concentrate on the religious aspect of it and on the idea of gathering the family together. Also in my country on the 6th of December we celebrate Saint Nicholas and on the night between 5th and 6th Old Father Nicholas brings small gifts to children that were good and a stick to children that were bad. He leaves them in one's shoes so as to not be seen. Children clean their shoes spotless on the evening of 5th of December. This is in remembrance of when he helped the poor sisters to get married.
On Christmas Eve Old Father Christmas visits (he doesn't hide) and children that were good and sing or tell him a poem receive a gift from his magical bag (even adults need to recite or sing because we are all children in Father Christmas's eyes) and bad children receive a stick. Of course parents plead with him and if the child promises to be good next year they also receive a gift, a smaller one tho. Old Father Christmas is a different entity to Old Father Nicholas because he is the one that refused to let Mary give birth in his house and sent her to give birth in the stables. The old man's wife wanted to help Mary however and the man was cruel and physically punished her. Than baby Jesus performed a miracle and healed her. Witnessing this miracle the old man fell to his knees and asking for forgiveness he vowed to help all children as atonement and in remembrance of baby Jesus. That's why Old Father Christmas visits all children on Christmas Eve.

Growing up my brother has food intolerances (undiagnosed crohn's) and free from advent calendars didn't exist then, so we always had reusable cloth calendars - one Christmas tree shaped and one with pockets on a rope that hung along the bannister. One of my favourite childhood Christmas memories was choosing which sweets we were having and which pocket each sweet went in. We got a different sweet of our choice every day, whereas other people just got the same chocolate over and over again in different shapes.

I really like gift quality fruit as gifts, or indulgences. A bunch of gold wrapped pears around the breakfast table adding just the right amount of shine or bling, while being consumable. I know not everyone likes pears, so figure out what fruit works for your situation.
My Dad is from Slovenia and he also likes gold wrapped fruits for Christmas. -Particularly oranges, I guess they were hard to get when he was a child.
As an anxious person who is bad at talking to people I feel like the grape bag section has given away my secret of why I wear eccentric things 😂

Jessica - re ladders in your stockings. Find a dance supply shop that caters to ballet dancers. There's gel toe covers (both for individual toes, and "Ouch Pouches" for all toes on one foot) that are comfy and completely prevent ladders from toenails ... and ugly help with blisters. ...Zebra dancer hack! They also will help keep toes warm for those with circulation issues.
The advent calender is the most gorgeous one I've seen so far. Wonderful. ^^
As a child I used to pluck fake grapes off of furniture store tables and chew on them for years...... I don't think I should get the grape bag.....

Jessica, have u checked out Snag tights, they now sell vintage style tights (as featured in the film See How They Run, that came out in September). I've not tried their vintage range, but in general, I love Snag tights, and that's coming from someone who HATES HATES HATES tights.
I've just bought my first couple of pairs of Snags and I'm a convert. I've not worn them enough yet to know their longevity, but they are so comfortable. No crushed toes, no chafing. The crotch sits where my crotch is. The waistband isn't trying to be in my armpits. They're tights designed for human shaped people, which is weirdly refreshing.

I'm not really a tights/hose/stockings person, but last I checked, around here people call that getting a "run." As in "oh no, I have a run in my stockings."

You could try using ballet toe pads to protect your tights, there are some made of fabric or different materials and you just put on your tip toes to create a barrier. I don't know if it would work but when I did ballet it helped my tights last longer

My great-grandma had 8 chairs that the seat and backs were embroidered in a similar style with the flowers. All of them hand done. It's interesting how similar the flower designs of the chairs are to the wall hanging you got.
We had a reusable adventure calendar where each pocket had a felt ornament in it that you would pin to the tree on top. We haven't had it out as adults but we should!
I have the books 'What Katy did' and 'What Katy did next'. They were written in the 50's/60's.

My late maternal grandmother had a bowl of that fake fruit like the grapes on the bag, but I have never seen a purse, clutch, or handbag combined with the fake fruit.
The advent calendar made me think of my farmor (grandmother, direct translation father-mother) who made adventcalenders for us when I was little. I wonder what happened to them.

I don't understand Vinted, as in, what makes it different than other reselling sites.
I told myself that I don't need a candle accessory set (snuffer, trimmer, dipper), but there's a large candle I'm having trouble to trim its wick. Oh well, gift for me, it shall be! 🙃
I like Vinted. They have insurance built into the pricing, so if something goes astray in the post or is not as described, you have no issues getting your money back. The sellers all take pics of their postal receipts when they send the item so you know it has been posted and they have some kind of tracking system so it sends you a message when it should have arrived to check everything is okay. Functionality wise, it's not much different from the buy it now Ebay selling format. No bidding, just pay cost plus postage plus insurance. One feature I do like is that some sellers use more than one delivery service, so I can pay specifically for Royal Mail instead of Evri. I'm willing to pay extra for a more reliable service, but you can pick whatever is cheapest if cost is an issue.
