    Great video, thanks for putting this up so many years ago. My tiny inline filter was the cause of my fuel problem.

    Excellent quality and works great as an alternate power source for my Winnebago RV when shore power is not available. Also great for Florida storm season and our fluctuating power. On propane, this starts up easily and no messy gas to deal with, very clean and easy to operate. Build quality is better than expected should last for years.

    You just saved my a.. I use this to run my AC. And Refrig in my Semi. I am in Phoenix and it is very HOT! It would not stay in high idle to power AC. I watched the video and 10 minutes later I was chilling. Thank you for sharing. The Owners manual says there is one but gives no clue where it is. Thanks again.

    Thanks for your video, it really helped me through the process not only showing how to do it but encouraging me to attempt this and the restoring of the carburetor.
    there is a gasket between the muffler and the exhaust pipe....should be, it is in the specs and on my generator. so if you are going to remove the muffler I would recommend having a new one to replace the old one with; on my generator the gasket was very fused to both the muffler and the exhaust pipe, probably due to the heat, and was ripped up on separation of muffler from exhaust pipe.
    And as far as the fuel filter goes, if you drain the gas you can see the filter sticking up into the tank and there is a length of the filter with no mesh holding the mesh up off the bottom so I would think you have to have a lot of cr*p, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch, in the bottom of the tank before it would start to clog the filter mesh. And based on the old "petcock" experience in vintage motorcycles, that filter really isn't going to need replacing or unclogging for centuries probably.

    • @lindamazur4208
      @lindamazur4208 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my specks it also says there is a gasket in-between the exhaust and the muffler but when I took it off to clean the carbon out of the muffler there wasn't a gasket. Sooo ?

    • @BobJones-zf6ie
      @BobJones-zf6ie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lindamazur4208 Its been a while since I've sold my generator but if I were you I would order a gasket...scraping the surface of the manifold connection and the muffler connection surface in case the old gasket is hiding and fused to either or both. A gasket would allow for a quieter connection instead of metal on metal and also insure now and in the future no, to very little, exhaust leak between metal on metal surface connection. Keep in mind I am not a very experienced mechanic type person; but thats what I would do and see if it has any bad long term effects and then become a more experienced mechanic type person and then be able to give advice based on knowledge.

    Well done and thanks - this is a few years old, but will add in hopes it helps someone -- I have two of these and using this video replaced fuel filter and cleaned spark screen; I also had to replace carbs with OEM replacements because of old fuel -- also replaced spark plug. First one purred like a kitten. Did the same thing to the 2nd one and it did not crank. Checked carb and dry. Opened front back up like I was going to change the fuel filter and inspected -- pulled off fuel line and fuel did come out of tank. Upon close inspection, there is a pulse type fuel pump on inside wall just above the on off switch. There is also a pit valve that is connected to the same fuel line the fuel filter is in. The pit valve appears to be working, so the culprit seems to be the pulse fuel pump. My guess is the fuel varnished inside the fuel pump and it is not working (we are talking a 10 dollar part but a real PITA to get to, I was able to remove mine by opening the front like you were going to change the fuel filter, then I took the two screws out of the handle, pulled rubber loose around fuel tank, carefully pulled apart just a little so as not to break anything, and removed fuel tank -- then I was able to get to fuel pump and remove -- will go ahead and change the pit valve also just in case. Now, since I know the fuel filter is there, I am not going to remove the OEM fuel filter and put a in-line one in (I had planned on doing so). The fuel filter needs to be in front of the fuel pump (although it did not seem to help me in this case). I also learned something else -- The on and off switch on front bottom right of generator is both a manual fuel valve and an electronic kill switch. There is a connector right inside the generator on the bottom below air filter with a black and green wire . I can unplug it (that is the electronic kill switch) and then turn the on and off switch to off and 3 minutes later it will run out of what fuel is left in the carb. -- Then I can plug the connector back in for next time, or if I want to kill it right away. Little more hassle than putting in a fuel valve, but the little I run the thing, no biggie.

      Hello, curious if replacing the fuel pump worked for you. I have the same issue with no fuel getting to the carb. I replaced the fuel pump but still having the same issue. Of note when I removed the fuel line there was no filter. would that be a reason for the fuel to not get to the carb? The pit valve seems to be working properly. thanks

    Thank you so much. I did not know about this filter. Guess what it worked it was clogged causing the generator to run real rough like it was a carb problem. Your solution of removing it the best wonder why Honda doesn't fit a inline filter. Once again many thanks for an awesome fix video.

  • @justliketolook
    @justliketolook 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    While you have it apart on that same line you cut to add the fuel filter add a on off valve and you can shut off the gas flow to the carb and allow the engine to use up all the gas in the boil so it won't gum up and make it so you have to run it with the choke half way on. The only bad thing about removing the filter from the tank is dirty gas will be getting into the fuel pump diaphragm . Its always better to have a filter before it goes into the fuel pump and diaphragm.

    If you add an inline filter you should install it between the tank and the fuel pump otherwise any gunk that gets into the tank could run through the pump and damage it. That's why the original filter is located where it's at, to protect the pump, the petcock and the carb.

    I have the same problem. How often do you run your generator? I seemed to have fixed it for now by draining the fuel tank, adding about a cup of gas and an ounce of Seaform, and running it until it stopped. I did this 3 more times and by the end it was running well. I try to run mine every month or 2 for a half hour, but I think I need to run it longer.

  • @shavedape

    I did this and though I bought this new in 2005 or so, though didn't use it much (so its likely my carb is dirty and I'll go by your other excellent video on that), and I have no screen so there never was one......did certain years not have a screen? There's a slim chance some mechanic removed it but that's not very professional to throw away a spark arrestor designed to prevent forest fires. Not very good for business either not to just clean it since I'd be back for cleaning in the future. They should also let the customer know if they do such a thing and I only brough it in for an oil change and to get it running. They put Sea-Foam through it to save time/cost for me and it improved things a bit but still runs only on part choke. So maybe they tossed the screen except they weren't a Honda dealer to know there was even a screen there. And in fact there possibly wasn't.

    Ok I did all this and spark arrester, spark plug and what mine is doing is it will start for just a second or not start but you can tell it wants to. But not when you choke it. Only with chock off. It is getting fuel and won’t start with ether when I try that as well. Does anyone have any other ideas? I gapped the plug as well and cleaned the fuel filter like you are showing in the video. It was not dirty at all.

  • @fxk616
    @fxk616 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sure would have been nice if the tank were drained so we could see the actual filter replacement. Same thing with adding a separate fuel filter. (like actually DO IT?)
    I also have to take issue with advocating cleaning the filter with gasoline. That's a fire waiting to happen! Never EVER use gasoline as a solvent!! The vapors, not the liquid, is flammable - which is what makes that practice so dangerous. Watched a real nice house burn to the ground when I was a kid. Started in the garage workshop. Yup. Cleaning with gasoline. Fumes leaked into the adjacent furnace room where they met up with Mr. Pilot Light. Lots of safe alternatives out there.
    The spark arrester section was similarly less than useful.
    The entire video was a good education as how to turn wrenches. The idea for the vid was fine, but not actually doing any of the three tasks was a big disappointment.

      Just run it out if you can. Mine, not fixed yet, still tuns and works well with the choke all the way open AND in eco mode. Pretty sure it's the fuel filter needs replaced or cleaned now. Put gas in to chack orher stuff but tan it out before and that carb was dry as a bone. Nothing came out after running it dry.
