    Aretha had been battling cancer (at this stage) 2015, for 5 years...This performance was astonishing for a 73 year old with cancer. Aretha out sang an entire generation of “singers” in one performance. Even in her ailing years she still was the soulful legend we all loved for 6 decades.
    R.I.P Aretha...

      I have tended to think they were overdoing the tributes but "Holy Hell!" that was a performance and realizing that was what she did forces me to reconsider. To be honest that was more gospel than soul to me and that was her thing to me. I am not a religious person but if anybody could uplift and inspire through musical performance and interpretation it was Aretha. Beyond that, this was her in poor health.

    Incredibly moving and thrilling. I remember seeing this broadcast when it was originally aired. A legendary singer giving a triumphant performance of an iconic song to honor a legendary singer-songwriter, with an admired and esteemed President and First Lady in attendance. And Aretha owned the evening, brought the President to tears, levitated Carole King, and brought the house down. What a woman!

      Indeed she {Carole King} is alive & well! She & Rev. Al Sharpton appeared on MSNBC last evening to comment on not just her death, but also her incredible life &, perhaps more specifically, her work with the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's. Ladies, she & many like her gave us SO many good things that, I admit, I have too oft taken for granted.

    When I was a professional singer, Aretha was my absolute hero. There will never be another Aretha. A genius of the voice. The close of an entire era now. Thank you, Aretha, for all you have given to the world, throughout your life. What a legacy!!! Blessings for your next journey.

    • @australien6611

      Kerrie Redgate So u really felt the need to tell us u were a professional singer

    • @KerrieRedgate
      @KerrieRedgate 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ancient Alien
      Using the word “professional” means that singing and music was my craft (for 10 years of my life) and it was what I did for the benefit of others, which is what any craft is about. If you are not a singer, yourself, then Aretha may have inspired you emotionally, but being a professional in the same industry means that Aretha inspired my work, my craft. These are two very different types of inspiration. Both are valid, of course, but are different experiences. Aretha was my hero, and an impossible standard to reach-that’s what made her so inspiring to most singers of her genre.

    • @australien6611
      @australien6611 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kerrie Redgate Yeah I get it but opening a sentence with "as a professional singer " sounds patronising. And I suspect ,being into astrology, you are very much like that normally 😉 music has been my "craft" for 35 years but I don't go on about it ..

    I’d heard the name Aretha Franklin before, vaguely, but I could never have told you who she was or what she’d done before today. She was just a bit before my time. So I’ve spent most of the day just skimming past news articles or reactions of people talking about how incredible she was because I honestly didn’t even care. It’s amazing how after watching just this one video I’m absolutely heartbroken. I’m sad that we’ve lost such a great talent, but it’s a deeper sadness than I could have thought possible for someone I just didn’t know. Music is so powerful, and what a phenomenal display of power that was.

Usually in times like this they only show 10 or 15 seconds of a performance or performances, but to me this was one of the best ways to honor her at this point in time. And in addition to that it wasn't a performance from 50 plus years ago but just 3 years ago showing that she is still and always will be the queen.

    I heard of this woman's songs, never bothered looking her up, and as far as celebrity deaths go I genuinely don't give it too much attention. While they are people who dedicated their lives to their faithful fans and everyone willing to give them time for attention, they are human like everyone else and their deaths are just as tragic.
    This is the very first time I see Aretha Franklin herself performing, and it feels like I missed out on someone truly special. I didn't believe anyone could move you to tears just by singing, except for her.
    RIP Aretha Franklin. My condolences to her family.

    I'm from Michigan, and Aretha Franklin was a part of our soul. She spoke powerfully, passionate, and most of all for all of us. Her music touched us all deeply. For shame all of you that think for one second you needed to make a political point about it. She was, and still is, a national treasure and how dare anyone who wants to make a mockery of her legacy with politics. She was the voice of a generation, not the voice of your idea.

    • @TheFett79
      @TheFett79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      get outside your bubble; there are a lot of people making this a political standpoint. I loved her as a musician, there are a lot of people trying to use her death as a political standpoint. You are ignorant if you don't realize that fact.
      I love how so many 'woke' persons are only 'woke' to a one sided argument.

      Agent Fungus, I THINK the point is about her incredible work with the Civil Rights Movement of the 60's & the 'Jim Crow' laws that she was up against, in those early years. And that is just factual, not really 'political' per se, so yeah, I am a bit confused here & not in a snarky way, just confusing. Peace all.

      Magic Torrez while there are definite improvements to be had, it's a little disquieting that you cannot appreciate the fact that the modern times are an improvement compared to the past in terms of racial equality. The fact that there are a large population that feels safe to call out the neo nazis and other bigots is already a major step forward compared to the past. The fact that people don't recognize this takes away from all the work that the civil rights movement fight and suffered for. Please appreciate what we have while we strive for more.

    I've heard her music all my life but I've never heard her sing like that before. Wow! She was the first female artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she won more Grammys than any other female artist in history (18), she had a huge # 1 hit with George Michael in 1986, George W. Bush gave her the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 1997 at the Grammy's Luciano Pavarotti fell ill and with less than an hours notice the producer of the Grammy TV show requested she sing the opera aria Pavarotti was going to sing. She obliged and made music history. She had never sung opera in public before and she received wide acclaim for her performance. This woman was awesome. AND she was in the Blues Brothers Movie! She was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Harvard University.
